Reviews China House Restaurant

Standard prices. Descent food. Friendly service. No complaints. Tried the General Chicken with Rice. Surprisingly the chicken wasn’t heavily breaded. I could actually taste the meat. That was a nice change compared to the far too often experiences I have had from other Chinese restaurants. This dish only came with rice. So you may be as surprised as I was learning that broccoli doesn’t come with this classic American-Chinese entree. Portion size was standard, which is probably plenty for most adults. As of April 2021 the dining room is still closed due to COVID. Only take out is available. If your not familiar with this area, be prepared to look for street parking. This business does not have a parking lot. And good luck because this is a high traffic area with several restaurants. Lastly, the restaurant shares a building with another business. China House is upstairs. Hope you enjoy your food. Stay healthy and drink your water.

Great food great service the staff is very helpful I'm understanding I don't eat pork so they made sure I don't get any and honestly this the first Chinese restaurant that serve ice cream with the check, what's better than that , perfect ending

My partner and I love this place. Staff is always welcoming and we love their potstickers! They make them in house and they are great. Awesome family business that's been around forever. I've never been disappointed and this is one of our go to places. Like to be able to sit above the street and look down and people watch.

This place is amazing. A hidden gem that has been there for 50 years. The decor is really beautiful!!!! Very old school Chinese decor and all in gorgeous condition. The food was excellent and the service superb. Our waitress was very attentive and willing to make changes to any dishes to accommodate our needs. I was disheartened that we were the only one in this restaurant on a Saturday night at 8:00!! Perhaps it was the construction on the outside of the building. ..but in any case, I hope their business dramatically improves or they won't survive. So if you're reading this, please go! One small criticism. The restroom was dirty. The rest of the place is on nice, I would like to see clean restrooms as well. And one decorator tip, black lacquer chairs with red vinyl seats would be a big improvement in the environment.

So yummy. I've had chicken dishes , vegetable entrees and appetizers here and they've all been delicious. They do not disappoint. On top of great food, the service is top notch and dining room is very open and bright. Highly recommended.

The wonton and hot & sour soups are worth trying (just add some white vinegar and hot chili oil to the latter). I’m mostly reviewing to share full menu pics which seem to be lacking on Google. A public service! 😄

This place just holds a special place in our hearts. We always get a window seat and just enjoy the food and experience so much... that often, family birthdays and gatherings land us at China House. The service is always pleasant and the charm of this restaurant has our hearts. ❤️

I read mixed reviews and was thus a bit skeptical eating at this place, but work a block away at the Hearing Zone so had to try it out. Interesting decor - this definitely seems like an older Alameda establishment. I really liked the photo of the old Alameda Sun newspaper ad, touting a $3.75 lunch special! The one waitress clearly had her hands full, and was thus curt but overall pleasant. The restaurant is second floor, and has a pretty decent view of Park Ave / Central Ave below. Even though my waitress tried to dissuade me twice (and suggested beef & broccoli or mongolian beef instead), I ended up with my original choice of Szechuan Shredded Pork. I'll be honest, I don't trust restaurants that call it 'Szechuan' and not 'Sichuan', but gave it a shot anyway. I was dissuaded from my original order of 'extra spicy,' having being told that it was already 'spicy enough.' Through the lunch special, I ordered that alongside pork fried rice, fried wontons, and vanilla ice cream to finish it off. The entree was not spicy, but otherwise delicious. Relatively true-to-form Sichuan flavors (minus the heat) hit the pork, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, onions, and garlic quite well. However, the pork fried rice was mediocre at best. They clearly don't use decent rice, and the (sparse) egg bits seemed overdone. The fried wontons were decent, but the dipping sauce was way too sweet. The ice cream was OK. All in all, I'm not ready to give up on this place. I think I may try coming back for the lunch special (extra spicy), but ordering without rice to see if the entree compensates in terms of quantity. Based on that outcome, I'll be able to make a better decision as to how often I'll be back.
