I love Mary and Tito's cafe. It has always been a mom and pops restaurant and not this fancy place to eat but the food makes it worth trying. I have been eating here since I was very young when Mary and Tito were alive.  My grandpa and grandma knew Mary and Tito. Mary was a kind lady and Tito was a very nice man and they started this restaurant to make amazing New Mexican food for everyone to enjoy. Their red chilie is the best it has amazing flavor and their beans are just the best flavor it's great. I love pretty much all their different foods. This is the place to go for the best red chile. Their turnovers which are basically a stuffed sopa are crispy on the outside the dough has perfect texture and flavor and its nice and crispy. The bean and cheese and red chilie turnover is alway perfectly cooked and delicious. I highly recommend this family owned restaurant with food that will make you keep wanting to come back for more red chilie thats addicting. Mary and Tito left a part of them when they passed but their family has kept their memory alive by not changing the menu, food, or old school cafe that was the original place. Not everyone likes the same thing but I will say this is one of me and my husbands favorite places to eat and also the prices are still affordable for what you get on your plate. So I highly recommend trying Mary and Tito's cafe.

Hole in the wall that is a James Beard Award Winning restaurant. Definitely not in the best of neighborhoods- but the food makes up for it. No frills, but New Mexico’s best food.

I absolutely love their red chile sauce. I have lived in NM all my life and in Albuquerque since 1972. This is where I go to get my enchilada fix. Most restaurant don't start with the whole pod in their sauce, they use powdered chiles because it is convenient but which makes it bitter. Their sauce also contains meat and is a tad hotter than a lot of others. Go here if you want the real thing.

My go-to spot for lunch when driving through. The stuffed sopapillas are just right for lunch, especially with the excellent red chile. Easy access to both interstate highways.

Red Chile Sauce Rocks. The red child sauce was the best I've had anywhere. Made very basic with out the over powering taste of cumin and oregano, the true taste of the chiles can come out. Rich with just a hint of sweetness and heat it was the best. This sauce paired with Carne Adovoda made a dish worthy of being called New Mexican. Mary and Tito's is a must try.

Family Restaurant. Good place for a casual family meal. Not gourmet our fashionable, just dependable Mexican cuisine. Reasonably priced. Service is neither great or terrible. A typical "New Mexican" family Mexican restaurant.

Supreme Red Chile. I’ve eaten at Mary & Tito’s for seven years. The food is consistent. Carne adovada enchilada with red is my favorite. I’ve tried M&T’s chicharrones, guacamole, chips ‘n salsa, beans, rice, and the specials: chicken tacos, carne adovada chimichanga, & enchilada plate with red chile, the primary reason which keeps me coming back. I can only find such supreme tasting red chile at M&T’s. Don’t expect chili or enchilada sauce with cumin and such ingredients. Their red chile is a simple blend of the red chile pepper, garlic, water, probably some salt and oil, that’s all I know. M&T's has the best red chile. It’s a low key, come as you are place. M&T’s is primarily a lunch restaurant. They are open around 9 – 6, the parking lot is small, but seeing how it’s a small restaurant this works. Parking gets cramped during peak lunch hours. It’s the standard dirt & gravel parking lot and pueblo style building which is typical, after all this is the Southwest. M&T’s has been here for around 50 years. The interior is pink and green, old stools, chairs, and tables. Really, I just come here for the carne adovada and red chile, the service and interior isn't much to brag about. The Mexican wedding cake is scrumptious.

Love, Love, Love. The food is great. This is true New Mexican food. This reminds me of old school Northern New Mexico food one can find in the Taos-Las Vegas areas. We live in the SE ABQ area now and there is nothing that compares to the food here. The carne adovada and red chile are delicious of course, but the green chile is great too. We are on the hunt for the perfect taco and theirs is good because it is ground beef in a shell that they fry. We hate pre-made shells. The salsa is pretty good. We have tried several "New Mexican" restaurants in the area based on others recommendations and they don't come close to the flavor and quality of Tito and Mary's. Others we've tried are Los Cuates and Los Compadres and we will not go back to either one. We will drive the distance to Mary and Tito's.

Seriously...YOU MUST GO!!! I just finished eating here & it was Out Of This World good. The only problem is there are not enough meal times in a day. I had the carne adovada pizza. By no means will you be picking this pizza up, but by no means will you be putting your fork down! The carne is the best of the best & I will forever compare all other carne plates to Mary & Titos.

Best Carne Adovada Anywhere. In my humble opinion, the most exceptional New Mexican meal anywhere is Mary & Tito's carne adovada turnover with red chile, onions on top and a side of sour cream. A delicacy.

Quite possibly my favorite restaurant anywhere. I'm wandering the web, exiled to a life in San Antonio, TX (could be worse) looking for a local source for green and red that won't break the bank...and I stumbled across Mary & Tito's on Urbanspoon. My first visit was in 1985 (time flies), Tito was still with us, and I thought the green cheese enchiladas with an egg on top was the most astounding thing I'd ever tried. A transplant by way of various states, I had learned about NM cuisine) Laguna Pueblo style) while helping a friend roast chile in her oven (Mom brought a suitcase full back to Portland). I loved my first taste and so being in SATX for the last 14 years has been tough. I do return periodically and Mary & Tito's is a must for each visit. Cervantes is good (especially for that first meal off the plane!) and there are others I truly enjoy--Barelas for one....but Mary & Tito's just feels like coming home. Enjoy...

Forgot how good this place is....... Stopped in for lunch one day when I was in the area and had not been to Mary & Tito's in many years. I remembered it was good and nothing has changed. Good prices, good chile, good portions, bad parking! I had the red chili cheese enchiladas and it was like your grandmother made it! VERY friendly staff and highly recommend!

Mothra Says....Local NM Cuisine. I had heard of M & T's not from my relatives from ABQ but rather from Portlands own D. McStyles. Drexler had two reviews one really great and one not so great. But I really love "New Mexican" cuisine and after trying the El Rancho up the street on 4th, I had to try Mary & Tito's. So K, Dad and I jumped into the car and off we traveled to 4th and just north of Menaul. We were seated rather quickly although while walking into the restaurant, a gentleman just leaving mentioned that we were in for a treat. Now I knew that I was in Albuquerque because for the most part, the locals are just down right friendly.
Jordan (Mary's grandson) shouted: "just sit anywhere you want." so we sat in the back room at a table all by our lonesome. This is a old rustic former 1900's home that has been converted into an adobe style restaurant. Pictures of the entire family adorn the walls... generations of this family along with Albuquerque art on the walls. Jordan asked for our drink order while we perused the rather extensive menu. You know what Mothra and K for that matter were going to order. It was up to Dad as I had no idea what was on his mind. After 10 minutes or so, Jordan refilled K's sprite, my iced tea, and Dads water glass. We made our order and about 15 minutes later K's (yep, you guessed it) double shot of chile rellenos with red and green chile arrived, Dad's combo plate, and my white meat chicken breast stuffed sopaipilla with red chile sauce arrived looking and smelling de-li-cious.
Dad enjoyed knifing into his combo plate of one taco, and one chili relleno, along with beans. K enjoyed her two chili rellenos with beans and rice, and me my stuffed white breast chicken and cheese sopailpilla. Wow! Now this was one rather large stuffed sopapilla with red NM chili sauce on top but... and a big but; where was the melted cheese? C'mon. But just a scant of cheese was found. Although disappointed with the amount of cheese in my sopaipilla, I must say this was a verrrrrrry good entree. Wow! (see picture, as you will not believe it). My Dad, had had a rather large breakfast and although it was well into lunchtime, he could not finish all of his lunch and offered me his taco. Wow, two bites later and it was gone. Very nice shredded beef taco. K, although on purpose had ordered the chili rellenos "loved those rellenos" but could not finish them and had to box them home. So K; how were those chili rellenos? "Mothra, some of the best I have ever had." You heard it Urbanspooners. and K is rather tough on mexican and New Mexican cuisine. So how was Mothra's chicken stuffed sopaipilla? Well, except for the lack of cheese which is important.... it was huge and tender and flavorful. Did I say huge? this bad boy was immense.
Yes, Urbanspooners, I would recommend Mary and Tito's and yes, we did have good customer service. and yes, I would come back and try something different on the menu. Three entree's, three non alcohol drinks and tip, out the door at $33.00. Mothra says..... Looking forward to trying new items on the menu. 3.65 of 5.0

Food that stays "New" Mexican. Tasty carne adovada stuffed in a sopaipilla. Had it Christmas style and really enjoyed the green chile. Been here twice and feel like Mary's heart is in the food. The rest of the menu looks inviting and enticing. Viewed the dishes served to other diners and they looked good. Their salsa is also delicious. It is truly a family restaurant atmosphere. And I did not have a problem with service and it didn't look like others did either. You feel like you are dining in Mary's home. And the food is so reasonable you'd think you were eating at Mary's home. But you're not so don't omit to tip the servers.

You have to try this!. I've eaten at Mary & Tito's twice now and have yet to be disappointed. For the first visit, I had the Mexican Turnover, what we would call a stuffed sopa. Down right sinful! The fried sopa and the filling is a perfect match! On my second visit, I tried their combination plate with a beef taco, cheese enchilada and tamale. Heaven! Loved the beans! Next time, the carne adovada.

Incredible!!. The carne adovada stuffed sopaipilla was out of this world! My waiter talked me into getting it smothered in green and man, was I glad he did. The mix of red chile carne adovada with the green on top blew me away. This truly was the most tender pork I've ever eaten! Good but.... Not great. I was sooo looking forward to going to Mary & Tito's because of the overwhelming number of positive reviews. But ultimately it was a little underwhelming. I had the guacamole, bean, and rice burrito which was just so so. The beans were not overly flavorful and I had some rice that was a touch crunchy. Oh, and there was no cheese. That doesn't fly. Husband enjoyed his combination plate, but didn't think the taco and enchilada were anything special, though he loved the relleno, which was beautifully crispy. All in all, it was just ok. We'll go back, but I'll try something different.

Mexican Turnovers. For years I have driven by this place and never stopped always opting for the other better known places. It wasn't until the James Beard award and article that we (6 of us) decided to have dinner. Honestly it was the best Chile in town. The portions were huge (more than we needed to eat) but everyone was very satisfied. 3 of us had the Carne Adovada Mexican Turnover.

I have had better Chips and Salsa to be sure and I have enjoyed the Stuffed Sopapillas at other places a bit more but this place is set apart by its old style environs, good chile, friendly family owned servers and homemade dessert. The Apple Cake with Sugar Frosting was one of the better cakes I can remember eating.

Oh, and the very reasonable prices and simple menu. I love the jukebox too. I will be returning for the Huevos Rancheros. Hope they are good too.

Fair. I have heard a lot about the food, as well as the owner, Mary. From what I hear of Mary, I highly respect her and her business. Well done Mary. As for the food, I would say I liked it, and it was fair. Not a place I would frequent often, partly because of the parking, and partly because of the food, but it certainly wasn't bad. The chicharrones were very good, my carne adovada burrito was average. Their salsa is not at all my kind of salsa. It almost tasted like pizza sauce. Could have been a bad batch?

Great Chile and Vegetarian Friendly. Their green and red chile can be ordered with or without meat which is a plus for me. That plus is then multiplied by the fact that the chile is really good. That multiplied plus is then uhm....exponentiated by the really low price. All around some excellent New Mexican food that has become one of my favorites.

Easily one of the Best New Mexican Restaurants in the State. When we were new to Albuquerque we'd try a few new restaurants every week, looking for the best food the city had to offer. Yet, almost 3 years later nothing comes close to matching the quality of New Mexican fare we are repeatedly served at M & T's. Whenever we find ourselves eating elsewhere it's like "Yeah the Green Chile was OK, but nothing like Mary and Tito's". Or "Well, the Carne Adovada was tender, but not as tender....." , etc.
Even the mediocre service cant deter us from raving about this place to everyone we know. If you try only one stuffed Sopapilla in your life have it here. Seriously, the food here is so good that my wife once described it on the phone to a friend as "having an orgazm in your mouth". Enough said.

UPDATE 1/20/10
Went in for lunch a couple days ago and were completely ignored. The girl walked by and looked right at us at least 5 times but never acknowledged our presence. (there were only 2 other diners in the restaurant) Another group came in 5 minutes after us and she quickly brought them menus, chips and salsa and drinks, walking right by us on each trip. After about 10 minutes we said 'screw this' and walked out. Very disappointing...

If you’re hankering for real, old-fashioned New Mexican chile, you’d best head over to Mary & Tito’s Cafe. Their cooks have been doing it right for decades, using Salem, New Mexico chiles unadulterated by powder or other fillers. This dedication was recognized by a 2010 James Beard award. They make a first-rate green chile but are famous for their red.

This place deserves more than 5 stars. This was not our first time in, just our first time in this visit to Albuquerque. Mary & Titos is all the things right with an independently owned restaurant! The building is charming; it has some age but is well maintained. Staff all pitch in to provide service and don’t skip a beat! We both got the chicken taco plate and ate every last bite. The corn tortillas were grilled to perfection and, impressively, the shredded chicken was all breast meat. Let me not forget to mention-the prices are fantastic. See you next time we are in Albuquerque.

This establishment has been around since I was a little girl. I'm 55 now. This restaurant is as good now as it was then. It is a little Cafe that is ran by family. It is always nice to support the locals. The service was very good and the waitress was friendly. The whole staff was friendly and very helpful. They absolutely have the best red chile in Albuquerque and maybe even new mexico. The turnover is delicious. I got my turnover with both red and green. The enchiladas are delicious as well. Let me tell you about something amazing. They're Mexican wedding cake. All of their food was delicious. The atmosphere is just as cute as can be. If anyone likes good delicious New Mexico food, I recommend this place.

I have been to this cafe before, starting when I eleven or so. That's more then fifty years!! The parking is a challenge at times but the delicious food makes up for it. The entrance is on the north side of the building and not either of the two doors street side. I love the food, the courteous staff, and the atmosphere. Prices are still very reasonable compared to similar cafes. Go, enjoy yourself.

Very cute family-owned New Mexican joint. Very charming interior and friendly staff. Service was actually faster than most places in town. The highlight was the adovada. Super tender and tasty. Very grandma's recipe. But every other dish fell flat. The beef tacos had no flavor and were greasy. The Mexican turnover suffered from the same problem.

I have written many excellent reviews of Mary and Tito’s. And here is another one. First I need to say thank you to the staff and the kitchen for being a constant source of excellence in Albuquerque. On Saturday, October 14, a beautiful balloon fiesta midday we came in to have lunch and the scent of the kitchen was divine from outside. Where everywhere else always seems to become a disappointment and falls short, you all , always are a comforting place for food that never ever changes. For me, it’s like always coming home to my my grandmother’s kitchen and the flavor that is always comforting and gratifying and delicious. Certainly no other New Mexican restaurant can compare to the flavors and the hospitality you all deliver. So, I guess this is more of a thank you letter more than it is a review. Thank you Mary and Tito’s! You’re the finest and best of Albuquerque.
