Friendly place, good food, but vegetarian difficult. We really enjoy this place. The owner and staff are all very nice. Service is moderate pace, and the food is very good. The Nasi Lemak is very tasty. We as a couple have since gone vegetaraian, and I wish there was more than a few vegetarian selections.
They have a note on the menu that nearly all dishes can be made vegetarian, and when I requested this, the server didn't know what i was talking about. When I showed her the note, she it was only for the noodle dishes but they would still charge for the meat.

Amazing experience!!. 5 Stars for me! This place was awesome. Used the Scoutmob- no problem at all. The owner, I forgot his name was our waiter. He was soooo nice and helpful. He suggested two dishes- authentic Malaysian dishes and were delicious. He talked with us for a while and was super friendly. Food was tasty, hot and great portion size, was hard to finish our two dishes but we did since it was so good. It's nice inside, island type theme and clean. I will definitely be back!!

Pretty Good. The decor is a bit over the top. It tries to make you feel like you're in an Asian village or something with the bamboo hut decorations. I kind of like it, though. The service was friendly and fast. During my whole time there one of the servers was singing in the kitchen in her native tongue which I thought was pretty cool.
I decided to start with the Roti Canai. This was my first time having Malaysian food so I didn't know what to expect exactly. It was basically a large, thin, tortilla-like thing with a bowl of potato and beef curry. I'm not sure how you're supposed to eat it, but I just tore off bits of the the tortilla and dunked it in the bowl. I then ate the leftover curry like a soup when the tortilla was gone. The curry had some good flavor to it and the tortilla was ok. I read that Roti Canai is supposed to be a flat bread, but I don't think this version resembled that.
I then went with the Beef Rendang for my main course. This was really good and spicy, exactly what I was wanting at the moment! It came with a side of steamed rice that I covered with the Beef Rendang and ate it that way. This had lots of flavor and heat; both temperature-wise and spice-wise.
This place wasn't bad at all and I could definitely see myself eating here again. I did notice that all the customers were white people, which for an ethnic restaurant on Buford Highway is rather strange, but that's just an observation and doesn't really mean anything. I enjoyed it and that's all that matters to me!
Buford vs Kennesaw. Between this location and Kennesaw, this one is the winner.
Love this place! Just had roti canai, sarong burong and beef rendang. Ahhhmazing. Please try the sarong burong: mild flavorful brown sauce (good even for those intimidated by asian spice)but the magic is that it comes in a fried bowl made of taro (like sweet potato, still has soft consistency with golden exterior) it is filled w shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. That was so creative and beautiful. Lovely people too!
Interesting. It's kind of a mix of chinese, Malay, Thai, Japanese, with a touch of Indian. Roti canai made think of Japanese curry with a big piece of mushu wrapper served on the side. We had a noodle dish I cant recall, but the noodles were definitely overcooked. The real star and redeeming dish was the sizzling japanese tofu. They deep fried silken tofu so it was abit crispy on the outside but still creamy on the inside, served on a sizzling platter with veggies and a brown sauce. Nom! Will go again and try other dishes.
Wonderful!. My wife and I ate at Penang a decade ago and thought it the most wonderful place. After a decade of hermit-like existence and following the kids' leads on restaurants, we finally got back there to eat again just last weekend, and were blown away by wonderful hospitality and some of the best food we've ever eaten. It was a wonderful experience, and I thoroughly and unreservedly recommend it.
March 2012 Change of Heart.... Malaysian food, for those who have never tried it, tastes like a combination of Chinese, Thai, and Indian, with it's own delectable spin. Penang is great. Whether you go to their restauant on Barrett Parkway or Buford Highway, you're in for a treat!
We always start our meal with their wonton noodle soup. (One portion easily feeds four.) My daughter loves Penang's chicken curry -- it's #67A on the menu. The beef chow fun is, I think, the best in Atlanta. Another favorite is tofu with mixed vegetables..
Yes, the place looks campy, with its faux bamboo. The service is somewhat spotty (though we've never had to wait particularly long)... but the food is always right on and definitely worth a visit.
March 2012 Update: What's happening?! One of my favorite restaurants has turned just so-so.... Our usual 67A, beef chow fun, noodle wonton soup -- all below par. Smaller portions, too. New chefs? New management? Something's happening here, and it's not good. )
Best Restaurant in the City. Shrimp Hot Pot is my favorite. Sauce is out of this world. If you want something new in an amazing atmosphere, try this place. It is a little jewel in the middle of Buford Highway, and you will love it, you will crave it, you will come back again and again, you will want to bring friends. Start with the roti canai. Also, try the peanut butter pancakes for dessert -- awesome!
Yummy!. I love this restaurant. The shrimp pot is so good. I can try some very interesting dishes here without disappointment. Service is great. The peanut butter pancakes for dessert are a must try.

Fantastic!. The food and service here are top notch! The first time that we ever came here, about a year ago, we met the owner and she said that we had to order the roti canai and we have ordered it every time since. It's a fantastic mix of crispy and chewy homemade pancakey handkerchief bread that is unbelievable dipped in the curry chicken broth, it is NOT to be missed! We always order the beef rendang also (we have also ordered the chicken and lamb rendang -YUMMY as WELL) and the flavors are crazy with the meltingly tender spicy beef with cilantro and cucumber. It is like Malaysian pot roast only you will never look at your mama's pot roast the same way again! Try it, you'll never be the same. The chili chicken is almost greasless with spicy notes (not too spicy but they can make it more or less so to your liking) and fresh, crispy veggies with it. The wine, for $21/bottle is a serious steal that you cannot resist! The sate will make you forget about all of the other anemic sates that you have ever had. We tried dessert on the urging of the owner and it was phenomenal also! Shaved ice with coconut cream, red beans and green noodles was fantastic even though we were stuffed. Do not miss a chance to pick up some homemade (by the owner!) cookies right before you pay. The pineapple cookies are CRAZY good! The pineapple jam is homemade and not too sweet and the cookies are made from that jam and the best butter cookie dough that I've ever had. The food, the service - everything is just top notch! Go and just ask the owner to feed you, she knows what you need and what you'll LOVE.

Very very delicious!. I went by Pho Bac next door to grab some dinner before heading home, and they had just closed (they close at 9pm). I had been wanting to try Penang so I figured I would give it a run; boy was it worth it!
I sat down and quickly jumped on to my iPhone to check out items I should order (remember reading several from US reviews).
I ended up ordering the roti canai as I kept flipping back and forth through the menu pages. Finally, I ordered the Penang kari mee (number 29 on the menu).
The roti canai came out pretty quick, and was absolutely INCREDIBLE -- and only $2.50! Its comes out in a semi-puffed up roti piece that has been twisted into itself, assuming just for aesthetics. It had the correct doughy-fatty ratio, slick to tough, and tough to tear aspect it should. The curry potato sauce was soooooo delicious! They sent it out with a spoon, I almost wanted to eat it like a soup! This dish is an absolute MUST order for when you come.
The penang kari mee was REALLY good. I wasnt sure what to order, so I saw a picture on the menu in bottom left corner and it looked good, so I found the caption on the menu and decided to give it a whirl. Its a thick noodle soup based in coconut milk with some green onion, chicken, shrimp, and tofu. All of it was absolutely fantastic -- I had NO problem eating the entire bowl (which is pretty close to an XL bowl of Pho) and was happy it was a total of $7.50 I think? The balance of coconut with the still present heat of the soup (spice heat) was very nice, and stayed delicious until the last slurp of broth.
The service was good -- not great, not bad, but good. They werent overly busy, but the place has a pretty neat decor going on inside, and the layout is really nice in that even if packed, you wouldnt feel hardpressed for space.
All in all, 4/5 (maybe even 4.5/5)! I can wait to bring some colleagues here from work and try other dishes!

Try something new.. I have visited the Penang in NY, Philly, L.A., and Atlanta. I believe they are all related in some way although they differ quite a bit in atmosphere.
Penang in Atlanta is one of the nicest. The atmosphere is casual and no reservations are required. The décor is interesting and intimate. The service is also very good.
The food is mostly very good to excellent. The roti canai is crispy and hot just like one from a hawker center in KL (hawkers are the best place to get real Roti Canai). The curry dipping sauce is also real Malaysian curry flavor not Indian or thai like some other restaurants use (although generally not as spicy as in Malaysia). The satay is good to very-good as well. Not as good as in Malaysia, but better than the Thai or Indonesian varieties other restaurants try and pass off as Malaysian satay. The rendang is good but not as tender or flavorful as my wife can make. The soups in general have the hot and sour flavors one expects, although the chili is toned down a bit from Malaysia.
Prices are mid ranged but a good value. If you are looking for a good alternative to other Asian cuisines try out Penang.
Very good Asian food.. We went to Penang many times, there is one in Kennesaw. We love the roti canai of the appetizers, this is the one we have never miss when we order.
A hidden treasure. Dishes are authentic, but the experience is accessible to all types of people. Genuinely a good restaurant.

The roti canai was just as good as I remember it-the pancake was thin and perfectly crispy, and the accompanying curry sauce was wonderful, with a large chunk of potato and a juicy piece of chicken. The sauce is so good I could literally drink it up!

It was pretty good! I absolutely LOVE egg rolls and spring rolls, so that is the only reason for the missing star... I didn't care for their spring rolls. They were okay, not the typical crispy veggie filled delight, but a soft, jicama filled wonder. They were O K, but I wouldn't order them again. I would definitely eat here again though! The service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere was laid back, and the water didn't taste like toilet tap! That was a wonderful delight in itself!! Though the water cups seem to have had better days! Overall, a tasty, flavorful experience! Enjoy!
Lunch specials are $6.95! I loved their hainanese chicken rice, authentic flavours! Service is great, they are very attentive and quick. Will definitely be back again! Hopefully next time I can try more Thai and Malaysian dishes.
Excellent customer service and awesome food at affordable rates. The architecture of this restaurant is Superb. This restaurant is very clean and well maintained. Very authentic Malaysian food. I'm from Malaysia and I've tried the other 2 Malaysian restaurant nearby but still this one serve food that taste the closest to home. The roti canai is very good. As well as Nasi Lemak, Claypot noodle soup, Hokkien mee is close, and the Sarang Burung is good too.
My husband and I work across the street, we go to Penang all the time. The food is delicious, authentic and portions are always generous. The staff is friendly and treat us like family. On cold winter days, a noodle soup is aways our choice. The Pad Thai is absolutely delicious, not to mention the selection of fried rice, the pinaple and shrimp tops them all! We love this place!
Finally i found great malay restaurant in Atlanta.. i have been craving malaysian food since i move to ATL 6 months a go.. Special thanks for Ken for recommending some good food... Definitely..

The food here is still really good, but it's not what it once was when you always had to wait to get a table. Now it's almost always empty, not sure what gives.
The place is a little outdated and not crowded. Overall a ambience. This is not an American Chinese food dining experience. You might see fish head soup, or flaming ribs (they arrived at my on fire in an aluminum foil bowl.
I'm going to give away a secret. If you go (and you're not Asian) you may be able to ask for the malasian Menu. They don't offer it straight up to Americans as it turns out a little to outside of the box. I've been probably 7 times. Always as expected.. and they have sake too.
Foods here tastes much more authentic compared to newer places around. Their Kangkung Belacan (commonly known as Kong Xin Chai in chinese but cooked in Malaysian style) totally made me feel back in Malaysia.
We always stop here whenever we visit ATL. The food's always great.

Hands down best Thia restaurant in Atlanta. I’ve been to many that are higher priced and the quality is just not as good. Gonna make this my new to go too spot.
The owner was very nice and offered us several suggestions for vegetarian dishes on the menu. We had curry vegetables, mixed veggies and tofu for the kids, and satay tofu as appetizer. All the dishes were distinctively different and even my kids with picky tastes said the food was really good. The portions were more than sufficient. The owner catered to every request we had and even helped us with the wifi. Definitely recommend and will be back. Made our dinner definitely that much easier for the evening.
Amazing service and food. The food is fresh Is fresh and is really good. They can substitute anything in the food, and they also have many good vegan options. They can serve extremely fast, and food can come within 6 minutes of ordering it during a mildly crowded day. The service is really nice too. The servers are really funny and will explain anything on the menu. Would rather go here than any other restaurant in the area.
