Let me preface my review as I believe many would categorize me as a bit of a sushi snob. I think of myself more as a purist than a snob - what I mean by that is that I like very fresh fish in largish portions either as sashimi or nigiri. I tend not to buy rolls with the exception of something really spicy (volcano or spicy tuna, for instance) or something like a rainbow roll where there's so much fish that you can still taste it over all the other stuff used in the roll. As for sushi buffets, I've found most to be rather on the crappy side (the fish is almost always frozen - the only way they can afford to serve so much of it and break even on costs) - however there are a few exceptions and I will occasionally visit a buffet, mostly due to the quick in-and-out nature as I don't always have a lot of time to enjoy my lunch.
All of the above being said, I was relatively leery of Maki Fresh, more due to my own tastes, but secondarily due to my buffet experience (I know it's not a buffet but if you've been to one you'll know they rely heavily on rolls so my immediate thought was to place Maki in the same category). I was both mildly surprised at Maki, and at the same time disappointed. More to follow.
The first thing I noticed was that the rice at Maki seemed a bit under-cooked and flavorless. I'm not sure if it was a bad night or what but there's nothing like "off" rice to turn me away from sushi (sushi really is all about the rice, in case you didn't know - and in that regard I am indeed a snob). I wanted a bit more vinegar and the right consistency (slightly sticky, not crunchy rice) so the rice was a bit of a negative to my experience.
On the good side, I was surprised at some of the combination roles available at Maki - I especially liked the beet and cream cheese combination. I also liked the Ringo (eel, strawberry, jalepeno and cream cheese) and the BLT. Many of their rolls also contained jalepeno which is always a plus to me. Most of the others I didn't feel were either unusual enough or had strong enough flavors to pull off the combinations. I personally think that rolls should have rather strong flavors - try the rolls during the sushi lunch at Shout to see what I mean. I did like the ahi salad but it's nearly become a staple these days at many restaurants (especially Goldfish and the like in Atlanta) so Maki Fresh's version was on par. I tried a few other things but I especially disliked the chicken salad roll (not my thing I guess), didn't really like the asparagus (seemed "misplaced" in a roll) and I thought their version of spicy mayo a bit weak. On the flip side, I liked the drinks I sampled - the sakerita was much better than I had expected.
Overall, I like the concept. I would have graded it a 4 if the rice was better and the rolls a bit stronger in flavor.
Awesome. Great sushi, nice atmosphere. Can't wait to come back!
This is so Good!!. It is so nice to a have sushi place that you can tell is excellent quality, and tastes so good! I have been a few times, and even the prepared sushi is great. I definitely recommend them- the atmosphere is soothing and great for a date, group of friends going out to eat, I have even seen job interviews happening there! I have seen all different dress attires; casual, business casual, and even business professional-
Very Good! We will be back
Wish I worked close to here. Stopped in for lunch and had a great fresh Kokoyashi bowl (ahi tuna, coconut, cucumber, scallions, coconut lime dressing with a little side of seaweed salad over white sushi rice). Perfect! Fresh and refreshing with a cup of hot tea I left feeling like I had a fantastic guilt free healthy lunch!
Love this place. I eat at the Birmingham location all the time. Love having a place in Atl that is just as delicious and healthy! So refreshing for the fast pace of atl!!!
My new favorite sushi spot!. A fun and delicious twist on traditional sushi. The spicy tuna is as good as the higher priced sushi restaurant that I usually get my sushi fix from. But my favorites at Maki Fresh are the BLT and the Samurai. The chicken salad roll is also yummy. They also offer Gluten Free soy sauce, so I don't have to remember to bring my own. Great sushi in a great location at a great price!
Love this spot, nestled amongst some of my favorite boutiques at Peachtree Battle, it's delightful to pick up a great deal and then head over to Maki. And the best part is, after I eat, my new purchase will still fit!!! Super fresh sushi and Asian bowls, the staff is super helpful. They know the menu and my favorite thing is to tell them what I have a taste for and let them pick something for me. Affordable, great service and super efficient...one of my favorite spots.
Awesome food, Cool Atmosphere. Maki Fresh.... not just for sushi lovers...there is something on the menu for everyone.... Not a sushi fan? Then try the burger sliders with homemade pickles!
One of my favorite places to grab lunch when I was working nearby. They have a nice variety, but I primarily stuck to their Hibachi Bowl (no cucumbers for personal reasons). I've also tried a variety of their maki rolls, which all has been delicious. The salmon bowl can be semi-dry depending on how you like sauce. I've also tried their sliders as well and enjoyed it as well.
They have outdoor seating and is set up as you get in line and order then seat yourself. Great service and super friendly employees there. Any time I'm around and need a quick lunch, I definitely try to stop by here.
I was here with a large group of people recently. We arrived at a time of day when it is usually not crowded and the staff was very surprised to see so many people arrive at once. We all had our orders placed within a short time, and enjoyed beers and drinks while we waited on food. They only had one chef available for our entire group but he kept his cool and had our orders out within a very reasonable amount of time considering the flood of orders hitting him simultaneously. The hostess / cashier took very good care of us and made sure we all had everything we would need. The food was all spectacular. The items on the menu here are very unique and creative. I had the sashimi tuna salad and loved it. Some of my friends got the rice bowls and had very good remarks about those. Most others got sushi rolls and really enjoyed them.
We were all impressed and very appreciative for them dealing with a large group so well with so little staff.
I enjoy the simple and fresh flavors. This was the first place I tried the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. They also have the Asian sodas with the marbles in them. They feature weekly specials and lunch specials. I love that some of their rolls include fruit. Their sandwiches and sides are also good.
I really like this as a casual, grab a quick bite to eat type place. Nice, but not fancy, just tasty sushi. Try the tiger roll and miso soup, it's my go-to meal there.
Let me just say, Absolutely delicious! Wow! Looked, tasted, oh so perfect.
I love, Love, LOVE the salmon sliders. However, I am not a fan of salt on onion rings. The onion rings WERE tasty though.
Tasty food. Good selection. Quick and relaxed. A little spendy for counter-service sushi, but I enjoyed myself.
I have had this twice at work as they come in as a vendor for the plaza I work in. Both times everything has been very fresh and tasty. I need to come to the brick and mortar to see if it is the same
Awesome food, awesome employees, awesome service. Definitely my new favorite sushi place.
Been here twice and looking forward to the third. A place where you want to try everything on the menu. And quick and casual!
Order at the counter sushi... Always consistent. Great for lunch.
I highly recommend the Kokoyashi and seaweed salad! Love Maki Fresh for lunch
The crispy brussel sprouts bowl is DELISH!
One of the best and healthiest restaurant here in Atlanta
Good atmosphere and good, healthy food. Will be back
