Best Italian place in Austin, period. The food is bonkers amazing…definitely at the quality level of the Italian Market in Philadelphia.
The last time my wife and I went was for Lunch on Friday…there was an amazing party vibe inside! They even had live music.
Tremendous all around. I love this place.
First thing to be noted is this restaurant is incredibly loud and cramped. This used to be a hamburger spot and it’s set up exactly the same, they should add some kind of insulation or something to help soften the noise. I could hardly hear the wait staff or even my girlfriend who was sitting right next to me.
We started with espresso martinis, which their house one comes with Sambuca and that’s basically the only taste you get—not a fan.
For food we started with the meatballs, these were excellent with a rich sauce, 3 to an order.
Also got the warm burrata because burrata is my gfs favorite lol. She was not a fan of the warm burrata and felt like it would’ve been much better just served the normal way of cold lol, to me it was like Italian queso.
We shared a Caesar salad, which was definitely a good idea-it was pretty large. The salad was also probably my favorite item and dinner 10/10.
For entrees we ordered the lasagna and the chicken parmigiana. The lasagna was pretty good but the chicken parm was not. The bottom was soggy and had a weird taste, maybe oil from it being cooked?
We told our waitress Mallory about our dissatisfaction with the chicken parmigiana and she was so great and helpful. We switched it with just spaghetti (what my gf wanted) and took it to go. Also they gave my gf a dessert with ice cream and a little donut for her birthday as well.
I definitely appreciate Mallory for how she handled our situation. She was great, and had great service all night. Her taking care of us at the end was the icing on the cake. Tbh I would go back probably just for her service alone.
Also got tiramisu to go, ate it the next day and it’s delicious!! Definitely one of the best I’ve ever had, perfectly made
It was an amazing dining experience. The food was stellar and service top notch! I want to go back and have just dessert because I filled up on all the amazing dishes and couldn't eat another bite! Thank you to Chef Ricky and bar staff, where we sat, for an amazing experience. We will back again and again!
First time coming here and we will be back. Make sure to make reservations; you can come without reservations but expect a wait.
The interior is something has the "old school" feel to it; old photos cover the walls. Nice music playing (a bit loud).
They brought out fresh bread and bread sticks. We had to repeatedly request olive oil and balsamic vinegar but honestly, you don't need them. The bread has a really nice hint of rosemary and they taste freshly baked.
We had the Caesar salad and these are quite good. Oddly no croutons or parmesan cheese. It's a delicious salad but just missing the typical accoutrements. We also shared an order of Calamari and it's quite good.
For our main entrees, we had Cacio e Pepe, Rigatoni Bolognese and Lasagna. I tried the Cacio e Pepe and I know that is what I'm having the next time we visit here. It's an amazing pasta dish. The Rigatoni was also quite good. For the lasagna, it is good, but honestly, a bit heavy. They do not scrimp on the cheese or meat, but it was heavier on the mozzarella cheese and too little of ricotta (if there was any). The lasagna portion they serve is easily enough for four people, so if you are with a group and want to share a meal, just order one lasagna.
We had a variety of drinks and they were mostly disappointing. I do realize it's an Italian restaurant but I would still think they could serve just about any drink. I ordered a cocktail and when it was brought out, I was told "this is our version" and it was bad enough I had to send it back. The server was nice and told me that wasn't a problem. Ended up having a dirty martini with olives. To start off... the olives! I never thought I would complain about olives in a drink but these were not cocktail olives. And the martini was pretty bad and ended up not finishing. One in our party wanted wine and the server was not at all knowledgeable about the wine list. In fact, neither were the bartenders. Their cocktail/wine list is 26 pages and we just didn't have time to review it all. The glass of wine brought out was red and our friend specifically said she wanted something white. I went to the bar and the bartender couldn't give a recommendation. What's the point of this extensive wine list if your employees don't know much about it. I've worked as a server and had to memorize the entire bar menu.
We ordered desert and we were going to take it home; My friends had Tiramisu and they said it was the best they have ever had. I had the NY Cheesecake and it was quite good but I don't believe they make it.
The downside of our experience was the hostess. Some hostesses seem to feel they wield control and abuse that... as did this person. We did not have reservations and simply just wanted to put our name on a list for anything whether it was outside or at the bar if we couldn't get a table. It was 8pm and were being told 9:30 - 10pm. Although there were three empty tables outside and there were spaces available at the bar, the hostess was being quite obstinate. After awhile, it seemed as if she wouldn't even take our names but ultimately she did take our name and number. After an hour of waiting, we went back inside to see where we were on the list. It was now 9pm and there were plenty of open tables and she sat us right away. The bigger question is how long had those tables been open? I'm 100% sure if we never came back... they never would have actually called us. Extremely poor service by the hostess. I've been to small diners and they will text you updates on your spot on the list. So, if you put your name down on the waitlist, check back frequently because it's likely they will never contact you. Hostesses seem to have a power trip here.
Sammie’s is perfection! It made me feel like I was in New York City! The food is worthy of a million stars, the ambiance is chic and the service was great! Celebrating my 29th birthday here in November!
fresh ingredients and delish food, entrees are good portions for your coins. Appetizers on the other hand not so much. For date night def go heavy on entree selections and put the $ towards drinks and dessert
Small intimate restaurant with great service. I had the mozzarella sticks as recommended by most. They were bland and I didn't find anything exciting about the marinera sauce. It lacked flavor but was perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey (cheese) on the inside. I don't recommend unless you prefer bland sticks. The lasagna and bread were good and large enough to share. There was a good amount of cheese and a slight char on the edge which I enjoyed as it was not a burnt taste. There was flavor/seasoning in the lasagna. It's not overbearing but just enough. The bread is fresh and delicious. One piece was ro temperature but a bottom piece was cold. I found it odd to be cold but it didnt bother me it was still delicious. The staff were all professional and attentive (except 1 in regards to his attentiveness). We had 3 different staff speak to us and ask how everything was. One,which I believe was part of management, noticed our drinks needed to be refilled. Our glasses were not empty long but he quickly noticed and asked if we wanted a refill. Our waiter, Mia, checked on us regularly and was very nice and knowledgeable. Great service I definitely recommend this spot due to their high quality customer service! The food was good - lasagna and my friend enjoyed the shrimp appetizer and the chicken parmesean meal. The place is very loud as it is a small space. Parking is not good so plan accordingly. I was able to snag a spot on the street on a Monday around 7pm. Reservations seem hard to get but I did notice a couple empty seats around 8pm so maybe that's a good time to try to walk in for dine in. Overall nice relaxed spot with a great wine selection, good food and great customer service.
Excellent authentic Italian food in a wonderfully retro setting. The service was exquisite (thank you Elle). The Cesar salad was amazing as was the pasta with mushroom sauce. Everything we tried we enjoyed!
Went here for my birthday dinner and everything was perfect. Our waitress was wonderful, and food was delicious! Not sure why this place gets mixed reviews, but I love it. As someone who is obsessed with tiny NYC Italian restaurants, this Austin gem is the best option for that vibe!
Amazing experience tonight with Dustin and Gia! Both had such great recommendations and Dustin had such great menu knowledge from wines to entrees and even dessert…!!
This is my new favorite place 10/10
The restaurant use to be home to Huts Hamburgers. A shame, they will be dearly missed. Sammie's is an old style Italian restaurant, think tomato sauce on almost everything. I had great expectations for this restaurant, given its owners. But it only turned out to be average. The food ranged from bland to too salty. The bread offering is cold like it just came out of a refrigerator. The dish below is their interpretation of lasagna. I would call it a lasagna pancake. Tasteless and almost no meat. I doubt I'll be back.

I called ahead and asked to seat at the bar cause I didn’t have a reservation.
Both of the hostesses were nice and they sat me quickly.
My bartender was great. I asked for a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu and this one is tricky cause not everyone can do it the right way.
He mastered! It had perfect ice chips in it and he didn’t even doubt it when I asked if he could make me a bees knees.
The food came out quickly and they were packed. A lot of flavor, a good portion.
This place doesn’t get 5 starts from me cause it was way to dark. Is it a restaurant or a bar(?)
Also is VERY loud.
This nearly disturb me and i was there for an hour or so but I dare to say this could be stressfull for other people and your own staff.
Everything that we ate here was pretty great. I don't generally speak on service, but it was also really good. I'm more of a if the food is good I don't think about the service. This place has the absolute best vodka sauce I've had and I'd definitely reccomend. The lasagna was also top notch. Definitely would go back and reccomend.
Fantastic dinner here! If you are looking for that old-school Italian restaurant from New York, here ya go. The food is amazing, tasting like someone's nonnina's recipes were being used. And the portion sizes are not to be played with either, because they do recommend, as well as I do, going family style and sharing plates which is how traditional Italian restaurants work. And pair that with the wine list, which is outstanding. And to learn the amount of knowledge the servers know and then learn they haven't even passed the introductory course for the Court of Master Sommelier yet, is impressive, to say the least. When you are craving that great Italian food in Austin, this place is where you want to be.
One of my favorite places in Austin! Recommend mozz sticks for an app. Ceaser salad doesn’t come chopped but amazing flavor. Portions are big. Service impeccable. I’ve tried the Mafaldine, Lumache, and lasagna at different times. Delicious. The brown sugar gelato is a MUST!
Food was delicious. Loved the Calamari highly recommend. Garlic bread was great!. The lasagna can definitely feed 2 people. But it was delicious.
Wanted to have a special family dinner with 4 of us and did research and this is what was picked. Reservations was a $40 hold if we didn’t show or cancel less the. 24 hours . It is very pricey for sure and not the quality was quite worth that. Everything was delicious don’t get me wrong and service was great, it just was $$. The wines are insane with the selection and I honestly could not even tell what types where what , so I had to ask for a recommendation. The bottle range from $70-$3100 a bottle . This place is small a bit crammed and very loud you can’t here a waiter if u less they yell a bit. It’s was a nice experience and I enjoyed taking my kids to a nice restaurant and allowing them to have a culinary experience.
It’s definitely loud.. but the food is great. Caesar salad is a must every time I go. Pistachio cannolis too. Servers are very attentive and some of the entrees like chicken parmigiana are large enough to share.
