Located on busy corner, this small, cozy, usually crowded neighborhood cafe has been around since 1979. Seating includes a bank of wood booths that gets the cheery morning sun straight on, a small sea of tables and chairs, and a counter with swivel stools in the back where you can watch the kitchen action. The work of local artists decorates the walls, and all are for sale should you grow attached.
I came here for brunch with my roommate a few Saturdays ago. I can't tell you how many times during the week I pass this cafe. It always seems so inviting, with customers sitting outside and a line out the door.
I was craving pancakes and this seemed like the best choice. Inside, the decorations seem quaint and charming (they have a chandelier made of coffee cups), and lend a grandma/diner feel. This Saturday morning it was packed, and given the speed of our waiter when serving us, I think this is pretty common.
If you are a big coffee drinker like myself, then pay attention to the signs posted on the back walls. I didn't realize for a while that there is a coffee station for customers to get their own refills. I also can't drink milk, so it's always a plus when brunch places provide alternatives, which Homemade does.
The pancakes were as good as plain pancakes can be and look exactly like the picture on their website. They are fluffy, fresh, and huge; definitely too big for one sitting. When I need another pancake fix, I will be coming back.
Food was amazing, the homes fries with breakfast were out of this world. Good Denver omelette. The blackberry jam on the table tasted home made. Great whole in wall, local artists, family's all eating together. Great place. Refill your own coffee and water. You may be asked to share a table as this place gets busy but that's part of the charm.
Can't wait to return. We found this place thanks to urbanspoon and could not be happier with the find. The staff was incredibly prompt and laid back so we always felt taken care of but never rushed. The menu is simple breakfast and lunch diner options with eye opening cocktails as well. The Mexican Eggs scramble was amazingly fresh and flavorful and the french toast was perfectly done. Next time I plan to try the pancakes and heavenly home fries...both were tempting us from the table across the room. A+ breakfast/brunch spot (breakfast served all day)
Love this place. It's definitely homey -- comfortable, full of people, warm and smells good. I love that I get to help myself to coffee. After recently moving to Berkeley, this has become my favorite breakfast place.
Homefry Heaven!. When we lived in Berkeley we'd be here weekly, getting our homefry heaven on. They have other stuff too like chicken apple sausage w/ eggs (or other types of meat with eggs) They sometimes would have a yummy coffee cake.. but I can't guarantee it's still there. They have pancakes that are pretty good too.
The line is out the door and the door closes at 1pm promptly, so it's best to get there early, bring a paper & some patience. It's elbow to elbow people, and sometimes you get to share a table, so don't be shy. Breakfast happens.
I like the self serve coffee, just keep the aisles clear, as the staff are wicked fast. I've been worried I might trip someone as I'm not as quick getting in & out of the way. =)
This isn't a place to ruminate over your food.. but it comes hot & you'll want to dig in, as it's pretty good!
Try the Home Fry Heaven with pesto. Wow!
Waffles were really good and the fruit bowl was amazing!
