Went for dinner with friends. The place was packed. It took our server a while to greet the table. Mediocre service overall. The food was good. Parmesan chicken was really good. They have massive portions so you will definitely need a to go box if you don't share a plate. Overall it was a good experience. They also have a drive-thru for calling ahead orders. I will return. Go For It.
I have been going to this restaurant for years. It's one of the best Italian restaurants in Birmingham. I would recommend trying any of their family specials. My favorite is definitely the lasagna. They also have the best ranch dressing I've ever tasted.
Best lasagna in town.. Costa's might officially be a Mediterranean place, but their lasagna is wonderful. It's the best I've had in the Birmingham area. It's a big portion, and it comes with a big salad and a giant bread stick (more like a mini loaf of bread). Their creamy house dressing is delicious, too. If you order carry out, the lasagna "for two" is huge. It can easily feed three adults. It feeds my whole family (two parents, two little kids).
I've only actually eaten in the restaurant once, because we almost always do take-out, but it is very nice in an old school way. Lots of leather booths, candles on every table. I love it. It's nice without trying to be fancy.
Best gyros in Birmingham!. I think most Costa's regulars are so in lust with the baked ziti that they've never thought to try their gyros... which is the mistake of a lifetime. Now, I'll give it to you that the baked ziti is pretty amazing. But if you take meat and pasta, drown it in cheese, and bake it to bubbly golden perfection, you'll always have a winner. It's not even fair. A gyro, however, is something that too many Birmingham diners have given up on after disappointing trips to Al's and Purple Onion. Costa's gyro is enormous... big enough to use as a pillow while you slip into a sweet, dreamless slumber. The pita is thick and fluffy, and tastes homemade. The slices of gyro are huge and plentiful, seasoned perfectly and paired with just enough lettuce, tomato, and tzatziki sauce for perfect balance of flavors. It comes with fries, but if you're smart, you'll sub those out for a side salad and try out their famous homemade bleu cheese dressing, which is the nectar of the gods even if you hate bleu cheese. To sum this all up without being overly dramatic, if I was deathly allergic to lamb, yogurt, and bleu cheese dressing, I would willingly drive to Costa's immediately and have the best last meal of my life.
Unfortunately, service here is consistently terrible, the decor is in desperate need of an update, and there is no real ambiance. Fortunately, you can get your food to-go. There is even a drive-through window.
Love the baked spaghetti!!
The baked ziti is the bomb!
Excellent food! Great atmosphere and incredibly large portions.
I've always really enjoyed the food here. The lamb is delicious and the portions are generous. The homemade dressings are second to none.
Ask for the take out box when you place the order. I had lunch here last week with a Friend. I also eat dinner here once every couple of months. I admit I'm in a rut and always order the same things. It's either the Greek chicken (I get it with rice but you can get it with potatoes, too) or the baked spaghetti. When I had lunch with my friend I got the chicken. It didn't disappoint. It's half a baked chicken. The skin is nice and crisp and seasoned nicely without being overpowering. Cooking a half chicken is a challenge because the dark meat and white meat are done at different temperatures. Too often the white meat is overcooked and dried out because the the dark meat takes longer to finish cooking. I guess this is better than having the white meat cooked perfectly, only to bite into a raw chicken leg. The baked Greek chicken at Costas is always cooked perfectly. both the dark and white meat are juicy--not dried out at all and cooked through. They serve the chicken with a little container of clarified butter. I don't know if other places do this or not--I've only seen it done at Costas. The chicken is fine without the butter but hey--what doesn't taste better dipped in melted butter? I usually dunk every other bite. When the chicken is gone I dip any leftover bread in the remaining butter so that it doesn't go to waste.
The baked spaghetti is almost enough for 3 people. I've never been able to finish it all at the restaurant. At least half of it (sometimes more) always goes home with me and is enough for another meal. As a rule I don't like spaghetti that I don't cook myself. I'm not talking about the sauce but the pasta. It's either over cooked, under cooked, or been sitting in water all day. I love the baked spaghetti here, although I need a bib when I eat it. When I eat spaghetti no matter how hard I try I don't do half as neat a job of it as Lady and the Tramp.
One final note about Costas. They make all of their salad dressings in house and they are all fabulous! The hardest part of any meal here is choosing which dressing I want on my salad. Regardless of which one I get I never leave without first buying a pint of their Ranch dressing to take home with me. Their blue cheese is good, their honey mustard is good, the Italian is good but the Ranch is the best I've ever had anywhere and they are happy to sell you some (of any of the dressings) to take home with you.
Good food and friendly staff. I have to say that this place has the best food. Really authentic Greek dishes. The staff is alway friendly and willing to make our experience a super one!
Best Place ever. I have been going here for years and the food and service are fantastic. The value for money is very very good.
Favorite dishes are Chicken Marsala, Baked Greek Chicken . leg of Lamb and Gyros. All are made fresh.
Salads are very good as is the house dressing. Garlic bread is really good. Best part about this restuarant is they don't rip you off with the beer and wine prices . Will keep going here for years to come
Thanks
Family Dinner. I picked up the eggplant parmesean dinner for 4 last week and it was GREAT! Really easy to take home, heat, and serve. The deal came with salad and breadsticks. The family dinners say they feed 4, but I easily fed 6 with the amount of food given. The taste and value of this meal will lead me back to Costa's again.
Big Food. I have to admit Costas on Lorna is one of those places I always drive by, but never eat. We've eaten lunch before, and was good, and finally had dinner tonight. At first glance the menu seems a lil pricey, but once you see the portions you understand why. In true Italian/Greek family style their portions are huge.....even the side salad that comes with entree's. Even tho the decor is lacking, and I still feel Lavoys food is overall better, I like Costas and will go back again.....and again.
Best drive-through in the state. Although I've been to Costa's and eaten in the dining room plenty of times, it's the drive through that I visit most often. For weekday or weekend nights when we can't make it out to eat or don't feel like cooking, the ability to get high quality Mediterranean comfort food without having to change out of a t-shirt and running shorts is hard to beat. i would be heard pressed to find somewhere else to get authentic moussaka, pastichio., and high quality italian pasta dishes delivered through the window of my car. I'm sure some folks have eaten here a million times without doing the drive through, but for delicious Greek/Italian comfort food and convenience it's second to none.
Very good!. I love eating here! I don't eat here as much as I would like, but everytime I do, it is wonderful! I love the appetizer sampler and everything else that I have had! Best Mediterranean food in town!
Convenient & yummy & priced right. We eat here at least once a week, usually call-in and pickup. Each serving will easily feed 2-3 people at around $15. The grilled salmon salad is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside and served on a mountain of lettuace (mostly iceberg unless you order on Ceasar). The lasagna is delicious - rich and sweet, not acidic and served with a big salad & a mini loaf of crunchy, olive oil coated warm bread. The house dressing is a rich balsamic vinegarette. The boneless chicken breast with rice pilaf & steamed veggies is great - simple fare, but very satisfying. And the Spanakopita is delicious & huge with flaky pastry, not filo. For small & large groups you can order "Family Specials To Go". If it says for 2, we can normally feed 4-5 people.
Pleasantly Impressive - Greek Home Cooking. I've been holding back to visiting this place. I did not want to be disappointed. My first visit was for lunch. The interior of the restaurant is very homy. Although a bit aged, it was a pleasant atmosphere that the exterior does not reflect at all.
For whatever reason, during our visit, we were one of three groups in the whole restaurant. We waited 45 minutes for our food. It was unacceptable.
I tried the spanakopita - home made - fresh frozen. The server warned it will take 17 minutes to bake (as the menu said). It came out long before our meals. Although a bit too flaky, it was actually good. Home made, fresh, warm bread is served while you wait for food - and it is really good bread!!! Olive oil with spices are available on the table for the bread.
Had the Gyro - home made, fresh taziki sauce. It was very good - but the meat was not very fresh. One of us had the Italian sub - fresh cut deli meats with mozzarella cheese on top - toasted with the cheese melted and golden brown, topped with fresh tomatoes. The Italian sub was VERY GOOD. Another person had the meatballs sub, also toasted with mozzarella cheese on top, also very good.
Although a long wait, everything tasted great. Would definitely go back for more. Strongly recommend this place if you like good Greek food!
Our Favorite Takeout. They have great takeout. Call ahead and 20 minutes later you have a yummy family sized dinner with salad and bread for about $17!
"B-". The food is excellent, atmosphere is cozy but with adequate room. Decent wine list. I recommend: Fried Calimari and Lasagna. Cons: waitstaff typically scuzzy and smell of too many cigarrette breaks... The baclava was VERY dry and not recommended.
Great Food. This is a great restaurant that your entire family will love, it's great for your family, a romantic dinner with just you and your husband, co-workers, or gatherings, non smoking establishment, very clean and nice romantic mood setter. All their food is great, there is nothing that I have tried that I didn't love, although you cant finish their huge portions, they are always great for lunch the next day. I'm a working mother so many nights I don't have time to cook for my family, Costa's offers several take-out family specials, pleasing to your mouth and your pocket. They have a full menu at costasmcafe.com. Check them out I promise you'll love them as I do.
When I need Greek food, Costa's is the first place I think of and baked leg of lamb is the dish on my mind. The leg of lamb lunch is $10.99, and the dinner is $14.95, and the side is Greek potatoes, rice pilaf, or Greek pasta along with tossed salad and garlic bread. At Costa's, I like to do the carryout, and since I live a little over 20 minutes from the restaurant, I like to call ahead to make sure they've got some lamb cooked. A few times, I've been in Hoover and decided to head to Costa's only to find out that they've run out of lamb or won't be cooking any until the next meal time. Other than that, the service has been great, and the food has been spectacular. About Noel I'm a lifelong learner, and I want to help people learn. Went first time last Monday food was great and server was very helpful I had chicken alfredo and girlfriend had lasagna. Server bet me I would be asking for a to go box and she was right l am 6'2" 230 and thought I could eat it all. We will not go back to the Olive Garden
BEST FOOD EVER! The lasagna is the best I have ever had, and trust me, I have tried a lot including my mama’s and it doesn’t stand a chance to Costa’s! The ranch is also absolutely amazing and homemade. I recommend takeout though, not the nicest dine-in experience but the food is worth it. I also think you should go for lunch if you want cheap prices for a lot of food, although dinner doesn’t break the bank. I have been eating here for years and will never be able to eat any Greek, Mediterranean, or Italian food again without comparing it to Costa’s. Call in an order now, before I get there first and it’s all gone!
Went there for my bday they surprised us with a big slice of chocolate cake with chocolate and vanilla moose mouth watering. I had the baked lasagna it was so good delicious. If you want some good Italian food this is the place. Friendly staff as well.
