The atmosphere was great. Chill, not pretentious, great music and wonderful service from the bartender, to our server Ashley. The drinks were perfect, and the food couldn't have been more fulfilling. The truffle pasta made my week! Cheers!
Great kale & wheat berry salad to start! I had the short ribs and my husband the filet, both fabulously prepared. Homemade rum raisin icecream was fantastic too! Ambiance and service were great. Will definitely be back and will recommend to others!
I visited forest with a rowdy group of high school friends. We explained we might be a little loud and we're accommodated with a table near the bar for some cover noise I'm assuming. The craft drinks from the bar were strong and expertly crafted. The food was all interesting and well executed. Sammy and his staff are extremely accommodating. Highly recommend Forest!
Excellent food and excellent service. We both enjoyed every single bite, from the appetizer to our dessert. The short ribs were my favorite though. We can't wait to go back.
The atmosphere was very relaxing...the service was excellent...the food was the best...the wine pairings were exceptional... (seabass with a fantastic sauce & rib eye was cooked to perfection) ..definitely will come back....

Impeccable service- insanely good dishes. My new Friday spot.
Fanastic menu, ambience and staff. One of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham!
Food, service and atmosphere were all great. By far the best restaurant in Birmingham.
Amazing food, great Chef, wonderful service! Nick was very accommodating, I was tempted to lick the bowl that my shellfish pasta came in! Definitely worth a visit.
Great food, service and ambiance, will go back again!
I have been there for my wife's birthday dinner. The Pork shoulder and the apple tart are so yummy. We had a very good time.
Brilliant food, top notch ingredients, beautiful presentation. This is a true dining experience, no doubt. Great for foodies and special occasions.
Not Open for Lunch, BUT!. Recently we read that Forest Grill is closed for lunch but they will do a “walk-in” lunch. After reading about this we decided to try the walk-in lunch. We called and found that the chef would serve a chef’s choice lunch and so we made a reservation. We arrived, the restaurant was dark but the door was open. We entered and saw the manager and told him that we wanted to have lunch and had called for reservation. He explained the lunch to us, indicating there was no menu, rather the chef would come to our table, find our likes, allergies, etc. and then prepare a lunch. The chef came and we talked for a while. And then it happened and we had a wonderful four-course lunch. Each course was brought to us by the chef. We had wine with lunch and the manager who is also a sommelier picked a wonderful French White Burgundy to accompany our lunch. Discussing what was served is not relevant because this same lunch would probably never be served again. Lunch was expensive but worth every penny. We are planning on returning in the not too distant future for another lunch at this restaurant that is not open for lunch.
Excellent meal. Sea Bass was cooked perfectly! Poached pear desert was beautifully presented and tasted great.
Great new chef, new menu, excellent value. Chef Nick is an incredible new talent on the local dining scene. If you have not been to The Forest Grill in the past three months, you have to go again. The menu is smaller and more focused, with an emphasis on local and fresh. The halibut and crispy pork belly are fantastic, as is the foie gras torchon. They have a new pastry chef who is very talented as well. Love this place!
Went here for our anniversary. The owner chef Brian is my boyfriend's teacher at schoolcraft and made reservations for us. Went on Halloween so there weren't many people. It was quiet and elegant. Food was excellent, I had the veal cheek lasagna (it was like eating meat butter), we had the charcuterie plate (anyone who goes here must try a charcuterie plate, chef Brian is world famous for his meat), received a complementary risotto dish and my boyfriend got the pork rack. The flavor pairings can be odd but worth the try. We have no complaints, wait staff was excellent and food was excellent. Get the hazelnut gelato cherry Belgian waffles for dessert! :)
Exciting dining, but . . .. This is one of the most beautiful modern restaurants i have ever been in. Lots of windows--an attractive place. The menu is large, with incredible choices.
I had the risotto appetizer which was incredible. Even if you don't think you like sweetbreads, try this. My duck entree was also incredible, however the sausage that accompanied it was slightly cold in the middle. The duck more than made up for that though. Dessert for me was dull: a chocolate torte, that I am sad to say tasted quite ordinary.
My guest was also generally pleased with his meal. He had the yellow fin tuna appetizer--spectacular work of art--and the Dover sole entree. His main gripe was the piece of sole was smallish. But it was beautiful to look at. His dessert was also spectacular, a trio of custards, each in its own egg shell. It was perhaps slightly over the top, but still delightful to see.
The service was impeccable, as you would expect for these prices. And lets be frank about the prices.
First off: I am not cheap when it comes to fine dining. So going in I knew I was going to be shelling out some dough. Further, I did not find the entree prices outrageous, ranging from about $22 to $35. However, I did think the prices for the more exciting appetizers ($17-$20) was steep. I know this is the trend in appetizers and perhaps recognizes that some people order them for entrees.
My bigger bitch relates to a martini, that I didn't even drink. My guest asked for a martini with Valentine vodka. However, as they do not serve Valentine (boo), he asked for the house vodka. This turned out to be Ketel one and $17 a drink. One, I think that is too much money for a house vodka and second its too much money for Ketel.
Here is another small, petty, catty point. I detest it when the chef comes out to go around to the tables and he isn't democratic in his small talk. The chef came into the dining room twice to talk to people. I was close enough to hear that he didn't know the people at least at one of these tables. Did he stop at anyone else's table? No. Did he even nod to us? No. Let me add that the joint was not crowded at the time--maybe 5 full tables. Did I want to talk to him? No, what the hell am I going to say? But no one likes to be ignored.

Refined. Carefully crafted food, relaxed atmosphere
One of our top resteraunts! We started with the smoked meats went to the tuna tartar. On to the main courses with the veal cheeks and bouillabaisse. We finished with the creme brulee. Every course was fresh, flavorful and perfectly served. Our waiter helped with the menu and the wine list and was very attentive. We will be back often.
Food Excellent, Service Flat. Have been here several times now. Food always interesting, flawlessly presented, creative and delicious. Service, on the other hand, is professional but often slow or flat -- unless you are the local food writer, in which case they fawn all over you.
Summer outdoor seating on a quiet street; yummy homemade tomato soup with a pastry crust topping-yummy. Their specials are always a good choice and innovative salads-try anything with goat cheese! We will become regulars.
Excellent!. These people take their food seriously. I can give one good reason why before even mentioning the food: I saw culinary students working in the kitchen.
I only stopped here to enjoy some drinks and eats with a friend of mine at the bar, but I very much enjoyed what I ordered. First off I had the mussels, which I heard were excellent. They're served in a pesto broth with a dollop of lemon aioli on top which went great with the french fries that came on the side. Definitely the best mussel dish I ever had in Michigan.
Next I had the FG Burger, FG I assume stands for "Forest Grill" but it should really stand for "Freakin' Good". It was cooked to a perfect medium rare (by my request) and had a tasty slaw on top which provided an excellent contrast with the meat and cheese.
All in all a great gourmet experience. The place is pricey for a thrifty type like myself (of course I didn't expect IHOP prices here) but I would love to come back here on a special occasion and enjoy a full course meal.
Love this place. My wife and I frequent this place, Chef Dave is very accommodating wish they had a better vegan or vegetarian selection.
Jury's out.. Subsequent review: My husband and I have spoken of this evening often, our big *night out* for my birthday at the Forest Grill. He said he knew, from the moment we walked in the door, that he wasn't going to like it. That was because we arrived at 7, and the place was packed with elderly people. We are not spring chickens ourselves, but this crowd was OLD!
We were seated and it was bright in there - no way to dim the lights, since it was the sun pouring in through all those windows. Nice if you had been overlooking Lake Michigan, but you are overlooking an ordinary side street.
While the food was good enough, it just had no flavor, my husband thinks that instead of "subtle" the word instead is "bland". My husband had the pork, and in my first review I wrote about the jambalaya. I expected more from the first course, since the chef's book on charcuterie (or however you spell it). The dessert menu was entirely lacking of chocolate. Okay, it certainly is okay that there is no chocolate at all for dessert - but I had been on a diet, loved desserts, was looking forward to an indulgence, and there wasn't anything that looked particularly good to me! Thus, I had the gelato, which was just okay. All in all, a disappointing evening for us. You would think that after dieting and eating Nutrisystem food for 2 months, I would have been raving about the food, but I'm not! So what is wrong with that picture?
First review:
I will have to visit again to give the verdict. I enjoyed the tray of meats and "salads" as a first course. I enjoyed the stuffed quail with jambalaya as an entree. And I enjoyed the 3 golf ball sized scoops of gelato for dessert. But something was missing. What was missing was some deep flavor, some reason to love what I was eating. I felt that if I had to describe the Forest Grill's food in one word, it would be "subtle".
The service was so-so at best. The menu was not described to us, and we poured our own wine. Not a big deal, but I expected more.
Amazing.. Have a new front runner for my favorite restaurant in metro Detroit! From the ambiance to the waitstaff to the black truffle risotto with sweetbreads this restaurant is an absolute delight. Have dined at Forest Grill for dinner three times now, and nothing has disappointed. Kudos!
My experience at Forest trail is very nice. The ambience was relaxing and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The quality of my meal was great and beautiful to look at and full of flavors. Do you believe the pricing to be quite high might be due to location and service received as I've been to very similar restaurants I have not paid as much for the amount of food served.
I would definitely return in the future.
Great date night experience! Would highly recommend their seafood and pasta dishes. Staff was friendly and quick. Overall a great experience!
Delicious food and great atmosphere, I'll definitely return.
The farm egg is everyone's favorite, and yes it's very good.
They lost one star by adding bacon to their bolognese which was only good after the first bite, then it became offensive.
The pasta special with shaved truffles looked nothing like the dozens of photos on Yelp and Google.
The baked Alaska was an item I got to go but it's not traditional.
Soft meringue that wasn't frozen and unusual center.
For the most part it was enjoyable.
Really delicious farm to table restaurant. Caesar salad was great. Bronzino tasted great as well. I really enjoyed the carrots.
Ideal for extra special occasions, but I'd struggle to justify it being any resemblance of a regular occurrence (though it seems to attract a reasonably regular crowd of folks) Service was impressively attentive and helpful, going so far as to help us pick out a wine as we simply couldn't decide. I don't even like salmon, yet my wife's serving was simply delicious. My duck was sizable, and quite tasty. Keep an eye on the specials too; the truffle pasta on display that evening was, in my opinion, the best dish that touched our table that night.
Great atmosphere, outstanding service (waitress Ashley was amazing) and delicious food!! We had pumpkin soup, farm egg, Brussel sprouts as starters. I had branzino and hubby had the NY Strip. The only food we weren't super excited about were the Brussel sprouts. It was an odd dish. It was shredded and covered in a dressing, not crispy like other sprout dishes weve enjoyed. However, thr bread was some of the best bread we've had and I would 10/10 recommend this place!
Great service and great atmosphere. The food tasted great! I liked all the options they had and they had a seasonal Biscoff ice cream which was incredible! They have half orders on most of their pastas which was great to get as an appetizer.
A very nice place for a special occasion. Service was impeccable. Black rice was the best appetizer we had. We didn't care much about the duck confit. The branzino was cooked to perfection but it came with red quinoa, pumpkin seeds that was sweet. The fish felt very summer and the quinoa/pumpkin very autumn and just didn't go well together. The cardamom ice cream was great 👍
