I had the Lumpia Shanghai (super crispy and delicious) and Ox-Tail Kare-Kare with bagoong and it was amazing. I highly recommend it. The ox-tail was braised to perfection in a full flavored, coconut milky peanut sauce with eggplants and long beans. Comes with a side of rice. The meat just melted off of the bone and into your mouth, the portions were also very generous. I'm a big eater and I was very full--I even shared some! Best ox-tail dish I've had in a long, long time. And I am obsessed with ox-tail. I am coming back just for this, even though I am really excited to try the rest of the menu. The atmosphere was calm and chill, since it was a weekday dinner, but I liked that. The waiter/bartender was also super nice and receptive. He hit us up with some calamansi juice (I think that's what it was called? Please correct me if I'm wrong; it's like lemonade but better!!) and that was so refreshing and light. I really recommend it all. If you're around, go here. If you're not around, find a way to come here. My only regret is that I was too full to get dessert.
Thanks for the best dinner experience I had in 2015 so far!! See you folks soon, yall are literally perfect.
My wife Remy and I do not live anywhere even close to Purple Yam, yet we eat there frequently. The reason is great food, not just great Filipino food. Chef Romy Dorotan is a genius with his always fresh super high quality ingredients. His fish dishes are always amazing and my wife cannot get enough of the Kare-Kare. The calamansi meringue pie is my favorite desert anywhere. Give this place a try.
This is my go to place during special occasions. The food and service is great. My favorites are Ukoy and Cuapao. They try to incorporate indigenous ingredients from the Philippines like the Cordillera rice. Purple Yam is in the front lines of bringing Filipino food to the world stage. Don't forget the classic Buko pie, mango tart, the bibingka. and their homemade ice cream like champoy. One time Romy created lumpia with ube crepe, and crispy softshell crab with ube noodles: it was unforgettable.
Love love love everything about this place. Kudos to chef Perry Mamaril for an excellent meal and proprietor Rommy Dorotan and crew for an outstsnding personal service👍
My favorite chef! The best Filipino brunch! I love the topsilog, bibinka, puto & halo halo! His ice cream is insane!!!! Pinoy Pride!
Service was great, food was yummy! A lot of selections from healthy vegetarian bibimbap made of brown rice to deep fried pork belly. Food was low in salt which we like. Ukoy was delish!
I'm visiting from Knoxville, Tennessee and after almost a whole week without eating rice, which is a VERY long time for me to go without it y'all lol. My other half finally caved in to my needs and took me to one of THE BEST Philippine Restaurants in New York! It might have taken us about an hour to get to it in Brooklyn, but it was so worth it!!! I also got to meet and had a great conversation with the owner, Romy Dorotan, who is such a great host and a very respectable man I highly recommend Purple Yam to everyone, whether you're a tourist or live in New York! I wish I could bring the restaurant with me back to Tennessee, that's how much I LOVE this place lol.
Wonderful place, Romy and Amy are culinary geniuses. Brings alive the precious recipes and ingredients chronicled in their fabulous cookbook, Memories of Philippine Kitchens. They've been giving me memories for almost 20 years, beginning with Cendrillon (closed) and now at Purple Yam. Highly recommended.
I had the tocino & buko pie while my husband had the beef tapa and champorrado. We thought everything was excellent & cooked well with great flavors. The tocino was tender & juicy. Buko pie was great with the ice cream on top. When I come back, I will definitely try other dishes!
Excellent service, delicious food by Chef Romy! The place is elegantly beautiful. Will keep coming back with friends and family! 👍🏽👌🏽
We have celebrated many milestones over two decades with Amy and Romy from their Cendrillon days in Soho to Purple Yam in Brooklyn. This is because of the simply delicious food that they lovingly serve and the atmosphere of friendship, family and Filipino heritage, culture and arts that they proudly highlight in everything they do. Purple Yam is not only a restaurant, it's a culinary institution.
Everything about Purple Yam rocks! The atmosphere is both arty and comfy, but not pompous or musty. Charlie--at the bar--prides himself in his work, creating unusual and delicious flavored sojus that will notice your taste buds. And the food? beyond stellar! Romy, owner and chef, has been practicing his craft for decades. His Filipino roots are majestically rendered in his foundation, but he's unencumbered so he adds a bit of Spanish and Korean flare. He and his wife, the beautiful and intelligent Amy Besa, share and enliven your eating experience by spending time with you at the table; talk ranging from the food, to movies and books, and the Mets!! In the spring, summer and fall, you can dine on your lumpia and adobo outside where attention to service doesn't change and you can enjoy a garden. Nothing negative about any of my experiences, and I've been going fairly regularly for six years. Enjoy!!!!
Amazing cuisine - we had goat, lechón and a seafood paella! Our bartender kept serving ginger and coconut Soju
Romy, the chef and owner had new innovations of old dishes and they were delicious. Try the restaurant so you will see what I am talking about.
We come here often because the food here is consistently delicious. I’ve seen reviews that this is not authentic Filipino food. I can’t speak to that, but I can say that all the dishes we’ve tried, which are about 80% of the current menu are fresh and tasty. We love the fried pork, crisp and meaty. I also suggest the desserts, which are not overly sweet and really great for sharing. I’m a big fan of the ox tail, but it is a fatty dish (that’s just the nature of ox tail). If you want to go at a great time, try going on a Sunday for a late lunch.
Delicious. My husband and I went without a reservation (Note: you have to call, there is no way to make online reservations) around 5:30 pm on a Saturday and were able to be seated. Everything we had was delicious. We started with the dumplings of the day and ended with the homemade coconut tart. We loved everything and look forward to coming back. Service was friendly and prompt, but we were at a non-busy time.
Absolutely perfect! The equinox salad which was a special had lotus root and a donut peach and was phenomenal. The curried goat and chicken thighs were incredible! Great quick service and delicious food!
Very good filipino restaurant, very fresh and delicious food.
Service is very nice and fast. Always helpful.
Definitely I do recommend this place 👌
I’ve been coming to Purple Yam for over ten years semi regularly and the quality is just insanely consistent. I don’t really deviate from the Chicken Adobo (which has such an incredible sauce, I love the coconut milk addition to it) and the Beef Tapsikog with fried eggs and garlic fried rice. They are both absolute sureshots. Dumplings are also incredible. They do different ones every day. Romy is an absolute legend and deeply cares about the quality they’re putting out. Highly, highly recommended!
I love this place. The owner is the sweetest, the service attentive, and the food is just delicious. The ube ice cream is to die for (they make everything themselves). I would go back in a heartbeat.

Delicious food, amazing service, lovely ambiance. Had the dumplings, grilled eggplant kulawo, and chicken adobo…all amazing!!
It seems like Ditmas Park has some really good restaurants. I could add the Purple Yam to that list. The waitstaff is extremely friendly and the service was super fast. I got the Daily Dumplings and the Pancit Bihon (Filipino rice noodles with chicken and pork) which were delicious. To wash it down I had a very tasty Coco Loco cocktail. The look of the restaurant itself is very cute and comfortable and the prices are very reasonable. I can't wait to come back to try something else from the menu.
The food was decent.. my daughters each had a serving of tocino. My wife enjoyed the mussels with coconut sauce and I had the goat curry. We also ordered a large garlic fried rice
In 🇵🇭 you can get 𝘂𝗸𝗼𝘆 (shrimp and vegetable fritters 🍤🥬) at just about any street corner. Each different flavor is 🔗 by the evenly distributed (𝚖𝚞𝚗𝚐) bean sprouts, making their crunchy mid-afternoon snack a star ⭐✨.
Amazing!! Some of the best, modern Filipino food I've had. We came from SF to visit and truly enjoyed this amazing meal with wonderful customer service and a kind kooky chef Romy :)
Food looks and tastes homey. I think the food should be a bit larger portion. Get the Soju and any juice to make your own cocktail. It'll be cheaper and tastier than buying from Bartender.
Nice cozy spot for a great meal. Cute outdoor dining option behind the restaurant.
We dropped in on a Saturday night, without reservations, and the staff were welcoming and found us a table. The chef’s take on Filipino classic dishes are traditional while also unique and fresh. We were especially delighted by the Kalamansi Meringue pie and house made ube ice cream in the Halo Halo. Additionally, the staff seemed genuinely interested in making sure we had a great experience.
Also surprising was the extensive wine list and availability of beers from around the world.
The food: the lechon was sizzling, tender inside and crispy outside. The oxtail kare kare was the right kind of pungent and satisfying to the last bone-pick. We also ordered pancit and the flan just to take home with us. Can’t forget the incredibly fresh shrimp paste, nothing like what you find in stores.
Pro tip: Try the soju cocktails on a hot summer evening
Tito Romy serves up some of the best Filipino food in New York! It’s the kind of quality Filipino food that I am willing to travel for. There’s something for everyone including vegetarians who can enjoy the pancit. The lechon kawali and adobo with bagoong rice are so flavourful and yummy! Finish off your mean will an order of Leche Flan!
A. M. A. Z. I. N. G. Service was quick, food was delicious with flavors that were just amazingly balanced and tasty. Honestly, best dumplings I've ever had.
So delicious ukoy and eggplant salad were our favorite. Great beer selection and attentive service too.
