La Isla is a no-frills comfort food restaurant which serves up a variety of filling Dominican dishes. there are seats at the counter bar, but no tables. there’s a menu taped to the wall that might be hard to decipher—best to just ask what you want and how much it is. the interior is old school and worn-in. very much old NYC and a bit more gritty than super polished.
a menu of meats (Pernil, roasted chicken, chicken stew and more) + rice + beans platters. there are mofongos to choose from, too. there are smaller bites if you want a quick to-go like Pastelito. got Papas Rellenas to go and they were tasty and hit the spot as i wanted something savory and full of carbs. the deep-fried potato ball is served warm —it is stuffed with seasoned ground beef. so good. the potato ball is a nice size and perfect amount of snack for walking.
staff is friendly enough, but this is not fast food or fine dining. things operate at their own pace.

Food looked good so I ordered Pickup on Grubhub. When I showed up they first tried to say I had ordered from a different store, then that "machine broken" and that I would have to call Grubhub to get the order refunded.
Understandable, but if the machine was broken why did they waste my time indicating that they were preparing my order and that it was ready?

They are expensive and cheats. I was just there purchased rib and yellow rice and beans. The rice and bean used to come in a big round container but tonight the server put them in a smaller container. The rubs are all bones. Didn't realized it until I got home. Very unethical place. Would not go back again!

Great food but the space is small so it gets a little crowded but it's worth it if you want good Spanish food.

Man this place took me back! Late night munchies, black on black shell top Adidas, all my friends, R.T.H, The Goodtime Girls, rocking their pink sweaters, and puma's! You guys are awesome!

Being someone who lived in a predominately Spanish neighborhood, La Isla was a slice of the homeland for me. I am very picky on Spanish Food since I cook a lot of it for my family, but when I want to delegate that duty to a store, La Isla is my first choice. The pernil there is some of the best I ever had, the pork chops are thick, crisp, and juicy on the inside. If I was pressed to order one thing, I would get their barbecue rubs. There is something about that sauce that just makes them perfect. Everything else is serviceable. They also have naturally made drinks like lemonade that are just the perfect compliment to all that delicious Spanish food. They only take cash, so be ready with them bills! The price are really good for the amount of food you get. A nice portion will cost you about 7 dollars, so you can get a kings ransom for under 20 dollars. The reviews do not do this place justice.

One day, I’m at Margon in Times Square (having Cuban/Dominican food) and the next day, I’m to Puerto Rico. Or the Dominican Republic. I’m not sure. Yelp calls it both. Zomato votes Dominican. For a quick lunch in Williamsburg before I head to the airport, I stumble across La Isla Restaurant (I was tempted again by Mexico 2000 but there was not a soul inside). All sorts of tasty greasy fried things in the window.

Typical greasy cuchifrito place where you take your life in your hands! Been in this spitfirevwr and has never chafed it's menu.
