It's safe to say that Kuni's is one of the highest if the highest quality sushi restaurants in the western New York area. The atmosphere is welcoming and the food makes it hard to leave. Their deserts are also excellent. I once had the mixed fruit sorbet and it was one of the best desserts I've had to date.
Kuni’s is traditional Sushi restaurant located near the Elmwood Village on Lexington Ave. After running a sushi shop on Elmwood Ave and essentially introduced Buffalo to proper Japanese Sushi, Kuni Sato opened “Kuni’s to Go” on Lexington. In 2009, he expanded his location to house proper seating and a bar. The restaurant offers some of the most unique fish around and their Sake and Japanese beer selection is very impressive. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday and their prices range from $5 rolls to $32 large combos.
What a Gem. The best sushi spot in Buffalo. If you're looking for a deep-fried roll with 30 sauces and cream cheese, go elsewhere. Simple, elegant, delicious sushi that is very affordable. Have not had any entrees but the salads and appetizers are great as well. Check out Kuni's, it will become your go-to sushi spot!
Great sushi!. This is our go to sushi spot in Buffalo. It's affordable and delicious. I love their wasabi shumai, and my favorite roll is spicy scallop and avocado roll, which isn't actually on the menu. Very fresh fish, great atmosphere, and I personally love the killer jazz music that is usually playing. Highly recommended!
An Amazing Experience!!!. Kuni's has the freshest sushi around. I travel frequently for work and I have yet to experience fresher sushi. Everything is delicious. The owner (Kuni) is always there. It is clear that he takes pride in his business. I love this place! You must experience it for yourself!
Great sushi and nice staff! Sushi doesn't even compare to other restaurants in the area. I can't wait to go back!
Love it.. When Kuni's closed I was a sad, sad girl. But then he re-opended, take out only, and I was sort of happy. Now he is back to being a full service restaurant. I eat here as much as I can. Is it pricey? A little, but no more so than any other sushi place, and the quality is much higher.
I never had "real" sushi before my first time at Kuni's several years ago-now its my favorite place! NEVER been disappointed-amazing food prepared by a master at his profession. You will not find a better meal, and the Japanese scotch (that's right scotch) makes the perfect meal even better. Love the staff too, always helpful and friendly! We will be back soon....
The Best Sushi Bar In Buffalo. This was my second time visiting Kuni's Sushi Bar and the first time I was blown way by how delicious and simple the pieces of sushi I was served were; and ate an astonishing number of them. Some favorites from both trips were the octopus, squid, tuna, surf clam, grilled eel, scallop and salmon and salmon roe. I didn't order mackerel the first time I went and was disappointed that they were out when I did order it. Also, I had the yellow tail and it had a bitter sort of flavor that didn't impress me. I have to add that I did order the sea urchin that I'm sure was expertly and lovingly prepared with great care, but just a personal preference, I will never order it again. And I have to say the restaurant itself was very beautiful and simple like the food. My waitress was attentive without hovering and the older sushi chef that prepared my meal was warm and friendly. To sum this review up I like Kuni's and I will never go to another place in Buffalo to satisfy my sushi cravings.
Eating Through Buffalo

Worth the Wait. Small cute restaurant on Lexington in the Elmwood Village. Originally just a to go place until Kuni turned it into a full fledged restaurant. Always crowded. Might have to wait for a table. They do not take reservations but when you arrive they take your number and call you if they are busy. Not many tables to dine at but there is sushi bar and bar space available. Try the flight of sake or a Japanese beer. Sushi is the focus of this restaurant. Everything is very fresh. Many rolls and pieces offered along with specials and combos. Ask the waitresses for their recommendations because everyone likes different things. The salads are very big and have your traditional delicious Japanese ginger dressing. Udon Noodle soup has more flavor then your normal every day miso. Diners enjoyed the seafood tempura and squid rings. KFC (Kuni's Fried Chicken) a Japanese take on fried chicken is a must try.
I absolutely loved the sushi I received at Kuni. It was a great dining experience. My server was super attentive. Great place truly.
Gluten-Free Average Jane

Just Beautiful. The food is perfect and soothes mind and body! The staff is friendly and helpful and they even keep gluten-free soy sauce available. It was the 1st time I was able to enjoy soy sauce with my sushi since I was diagnosed with Celiac's. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone that appreciates sushi. I have never tried the other menu items, but they always look tasty and the customers always look happy to be there eating.
Always good sushi!. I haven't been to Kuni's in a while but did go pretty often and I never had a bad experience.
How can you not love Kuni?. Kuni has been a cornerstone of Buffalo for decades now. His current place located on Lexington and Ashland is a bit on the smallish side so you have to hurry and grab a table if you want to sit and eat.
The food is always and I mean always outstanding. I have been to numerous places where they serve sushi but no where has it been this consistent for years upon years. You have a plethora of rolls, lots of fresh sashimi and plenty of pieces to choose from if you're in the mood. It's kinda funny to recommend a salad but Kuni's house salad with the ginger dressing is quite delicious...I would have plenty of times where my light dinner would be a spicy tuna roll and a salad.
The service is always wonderful. The servers are always cheerful, polite and knowledgeable to the menu if you may not know what to get.
Price wise they are not super cheap but are in no way what I would consider expensive and never have I left feeling cheated in terms of quantity and quality...if you want cheap sushi go to a buffet and get their bleh, otherwise this is the place to go.
Oh they also now have beer, wines and sakes.
I hope he stays in business for years to come.
Delicious. always.. Kuni's is the most consistent place in the city to get top quality, delicious Japanese food. And although their claim to fame is their incredibly fresh sushi, I absolutely love their specials. Their Cajun seared tuna (thinly sliced, carpaccio-esque slices of tuna) and the Kuni's Fried Chicken are amazing. Don't feel guilty for just flat out ordering double of each because the portions are modest. But, worth every penny. Sit at the sake bar, in front of the Japanese garden by the entrance, enjoy the atmosphere (and extensive sake menu) and have fun picking out small plates for dinner. None of them will disappoint.
Amazing!! Everything on the menu is good. If you are lucky enough to eat there on the night that they feature the ceviche..ORDER IT! you will not be dissapointed. The amberjack roll is one of my new favorite rolls also. I have been to many sushi and Japanese restaurants but this one blows them out of the water.
Love it!. Wonderful neighborhood feel, friendly servers and the best sushi in the city. Perfect.
I like it.. I can count the number of sushi places I have been to on one hand, but Kuni's is the best. My friend, who went with me to Kuni's when it was on Elmwood and eats out all the time and eats sushi a lot says it was good.
Green mussels are tremedous! KFC ain't your Colonel's chickie! Yum yum! Small portions, but it is a sushi joint.
Simply perfect sushi! Kuni is an artist. Ultra fresh sushi and his menu does not include cream cheese-this or tempura-sauce that. Best sushi in Buffalo....hands down. All other restaurants have tried to duplicate him. Not possible.
Japanese Cusine. Another great find if you like Japanese food
The new Kuni’s is a cozy, chic little spot that was decorated with a deft touch and a sense of style. The bar sits to the right and can hold maybe a dozen people. Tables left and center add another maybe 15- 20 spots. Tables on the front walk perhaps another 15-20. There are another 6-8 seats facing the sushi station in the back where three hard-working gentlemen add authenticity and flavor to diner. [Sadly, Kuni's is not open for lunch.]
kUNI'S is the spot to be, serving fresh, delicious sushi for dinner only. The wait staff and the sushi chefs are extremely sweet, always thanking you for the buisness.
