This restaurant is definitely unrated by other reviewers. Our experience was great! The wait staff was attentive and had great character. The food was awesome. The atmosphere of the dining hall really makes you think you're eating in an old west dining room. I would recommend it if you're headed through Chama anytime soon.
On July 4th weekend, we visited Chama, NM to ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. For dinner we went to the HIGH COUNTRY RESTAURANT & SALOON, and enjoyed several surprisingly delicious meals. For starters, we ordered the Southwest Trio (cheese, salsa, guacamole, and house-made tortilla chips) and the Calamari (fried with red chili aioli). Both were super delicious and quickly devoured. For entrees, we ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, the Southwest Chicken Alfredo, the Stuffed Chile Relleno, and a Plain Hamburger for our youngest member. Every dish was perfectly cooked with well-balanced flavors and accompaniments. The Chile Relleno was especially outstanding because it was packed with corn, cheese, and black beans – my wife said it was her best ever! The Chicken Alfredo and Chicken Fried Steak were equally mouth-watering delectable. Portions were big, so for dessert we succumbed to sharing a yummy Molten Chocolate Cake. Our energetic waiter Dusty was always hovering close-by and ready to serve. The atmosphere of the restaurant was rustic and matched the scenic mountain environment. Prices were quite reasonable for the high quality of food and service. We highly recommend it!
As far as the bad customer service, really?! We were waited on by the nicest lady who obviously was trying to wear many hats and did a fine job at it. My husband and I had the monster burrito (beef with green Chile sauce) and OMG! It was UH-mazing! My kids split the burger bast and they said the fies were the best they ever had and the burger was perfectly cooked as well. We all shared the triple starter that came with salsa, guacamole and queso and again it was fabulous! We will definitely stop again when in the area.
Cozy spot with good menu. Food was okay, not the best, but pretty solid. Beer selection was very good and prices were excellent for drinks. Service was friendly and they have peanuts on every table and empty shells on the floor (adds to the character/ambience). The setting was the best as it's truly a western style establishment. Live music on Saturday evening was good and added to the ambiance!
A little pricey but definitely the best bbq you will find this far from Texas. Friendly staff and fast kitchen.
This has always been my favorite chama restaurant after a day of fishing. I read the reviews but decided to give it a shot and I am really glad I did. It is every bit as good as it was before the new owner. Service was prompt and friendly. Chicken fried steak could have benefited from a run through a tenderizer but was prepared to perfection. I ordered the south of the border style and the green chili gravy is to die for. They have a good selection of draft beers and bourbon. Going back this evening.
