We've been there several times since moving to Charlotte.  Best Pho in town...actually, its the best pho I've had since California!  They have small and large portions, which works out well, as my eyes are usually bigger than my stomach. Their thai tea is also spot on.  Each time we've been it's been amazing.

This is my favorite place to get Pho. Unfortunately it's in the opposite side of town but def. worth the drive. Don't let the outside appearance of the building put you off.

This time we got the shrimp/pork steamed dumplings, house special broken rice and spicy basil shrimp. You get to chose your spice level (1-10) for the basil shrimp. She recommended 4 but went with 6 and it was too spicy for my palate. We should've listened to her. The house special comes with shrimp, chicken, meatballs and crispy spring roll. We enjoyed all of them.

I would recommend this to anyone and the Pho is really good too.

Always excellent!. Having been a regular at Vietnam Grille for several years now, I can attest to the quality and value of every item Chef Rick serves. The atmosphere is excellent, the staff makes you feel at home, and the food is served at peak freshness. I felt the need to write this review to refute some of the falsehoods spread regarding Rick Lai's treatment of his guests. I have never known a chef to be so personally accountable to his guests, nor one to be so intimately involved in the running of his restaurant. All of the negative reviews written about this restaurant have been regarding Chef Rick's becoming upset with someone for failing to leave a tip. While I could go on about how people such as this do not deserve to be welcome at so fine an establishment, suffice it to say that this is merely Rick looking after the atmosphere and environment of his restaurant and the people that work there. Failing to do so would compromise the establishment as a whole, and as such should be looked upon as just one more reason to trust and enjoy the food and service Vietnam Grille has to offer.

Thanks Rick, for giving Charlotte such an authentic and delicious gem of a restaurant. Here's to hoping Vietnam Grille will be around for years to come!

Yum! Love this place. The service is always superb. Pho was great, but not my favorite. Their rice and noodle dishes are yummy too. Very clean and decorative inside, unlike other Viet restaurants in Charlotte. :)

I'm a Regular. Without a question, the best Vietnamese restaurant in Charlotte. The Chef/owner, Rick, is absolutely excellent and provides impeccable service every time we are in. If you're feeling adventurous, try one of the traditional Vietnamese stews or, if less adventurous, go for a Bun (noodle bowl) dish or broken rice dish. Whatever you get, I have never had anything bad there.

Wonderful!. Had the crispy spring rolls, shrimp and pork rolls, hot and spicy chicken sour soup and the com thuong shrimp with hot and spicy basil sauce. It was all a delight, very flavorful, fresh and well executed.

They certainly elevate and honor the ingredients! Hope to become a regular there for lunch.

Lives Up to all the Reviews. Being half Asian myself (Filipino), I of course love Asian cuisine. In my almost 50 years of life, I have had mixed experiences when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine. However, and thankfully, Vietnam Grill was definitely a PLUS! From the outside, it looks kind of ordinary. But don't judge this book by its cover! The inside is much nicer than the exterior suggests, and the food is the star here.

To start, we had the Cha Gio (Crispy Spring Rolls). Now one thing to keep in mind about Vietnamese is that they are meat eaters.....more so than other Asian cultures (with the exception of Koreans who love meat as much). These spring rolls reminded me of my Mom's rolls, who stuffed them with plenty of meat. This one was loaded with pork, onions and mushrooms. And were they ever yummy, especially with the Asian fish sauce (which we called Patis).

For dinner, my wife had the crispy pan fried noodles with beef, and GOD were those ever delicious! They loaded it up with beef and a wonderful brown sauce which were soaked up the crunchy noodles. They they topped it with lots of fresh Cilantro, and what a flavor rush!

I had the Traditional Vietnamese Hot and Spicy Curry with Chicken. This too was good, but not nearly as good as what my wife had. Not sure about the "hot" part of this dish as I didn't think it was hot at all. In fact, I wouldn't even qualify it as "spicy" let alone hot. Still it was tasty.

It seemed like everyone around us was enjoying Pho. So next time, it's the flank steak and briskett Pho!

Overall an excellent meal and I can't wait to try their Pho!

Pho sure.... I was looking to try something different in the hotel area and Vietnam Grille was not to far to travel.

I know absolutely nadda about Vietnamese cuisine but the high reviews led me here.

I ordered goi cuon (sp) as an appetizer ie:soft shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce and they were excellent. Minty, sweet and sooo tasty. I asked for the pork to be excluded!

I decided to give this Pho a try and went with pho ga which was a huge bowl of broth with rice noodles and shredded chicken,a side plate with mint leaves?,sliced jalapenos, bean sprouts and lime wedges was also brought to the table to add to the broth I believe??.
Pho and me did not agree,it was like a soup and I am not a big soup person although it tasted ok,no complaints from me on the quality.

I wish I would have went with the broken rice and shrimp, which is what I will order next time around.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Had to go back for dinner- same day!. We were in town recently and had to try Vietnam Grille due to the high ratings. It was so lovely at lunch- we went back for dinner. All in all, we sampled the seafood pho, beef pho, crispy spring rolls, grilled squid, stewed catfish, & a huge bowl of bun! It was all fabulous- if I lived in town- I think I'd go at least once a week, but there was a guy at the table next to us who eats there every day! Anyway- it's a cool little place in a kinda ho-hum location, but the food & service will knock your socks off.

They are happy to open YOUR OWN wine or beer and provide the appropriate glassware. Whatever meal you order, you can expect super-fresh ingredients, beautifully prepared and served quickly. EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS! Enjoy the aroma from the freshly cut herbs. Try my favorites... the BUN ! Rice Vermicelli with salad and grilled meats on top seasoned only as Chef Rick can do it. No Reservations About Pho!. Pho, elusive, mysterious, traditional, and now thanks mostly to the television show No Reservations, a fad. Perhaps Anthony Bourdain would frown a little at the hoards of ......ah heck who cares. What matters is that this dish is complex and may seem simple to make but make no mistake, it is not. Many will ponder why some of us get so excited at a bowl of what essentially is just soup, but good pho is as much an art as any revered dish in any culture in any country.

I am pretty sure I can recognize the taste of home. The care, attention to detail, and love that is put into a dish that only a beloved family member can produce is evident. These techniques and recipes can be mastered by those who care to pay attention and what is produced is greatness. Be it chicken soup, meatloaf, stew, or in this case pho. I am fascinated by other cultures and their traditions. Pho is one of those dishes, that done right can be a window into a culture I may never get to experience in person.

What makes great pho? Of course that is always the question but it is every component, every step done with care that produces any great dish. It was apparent to me from the first taste that skill, technique, and tradition were all imparted in the broth, the noodles, and the assorted meats I chose for my dish. I think we get lost in describing great dishes. I think we long to have the influence to have the power to have others try what we know in our hearts is great food. Imagine if you had never had chicken soup. Does it not cheer you up on a cold rainy day or make you feel better when you have a cold? Can you imagine a world without chicken soup with all its comforts and memories? Pho is not chicken soup but life without either would be lacking indeed.

Wow. So on a sleepy afternoon my roomate and I was were surfing urbanspoon for somewhere new. We stumbled on Vietnam Grille given it proximity to where we live and the reviews which are quite good. Now my roomate and I are chefs and it takes a bit to impress us but this place started from the moment we walked in the door and culminated in the completion of our meals.
From the outside it doesnt look like much and my roomate thought maybe we should try somewhere else. I had to remind him that some of the best places Iv been have had that kind of look. Going inside the Grille changed his mind completely. The resturaunt is very clean with open spaces and only seats about 40 people. The decor is fresh and light which would we a great description of the food. Our server was very attentive and answered any question we had. We split the crispy spring rolls which came out within 5 minutes of the order. The rolls were crispy and the additions of the cucumber, carrots and dipoping sauce...The combination with a dable of sirachi sauce was just beautiful of my pallette. Just as we were finishing the dish out entrees came out and wow they were big. We both got the Bun, rice vermicelli bowls, myself with the grilled pork and my roomate the beef. The meal was absolutely magical. No need for additional sauces as there was some acide in the bowl, the sweetness from the fresh cucumbers, crunchiness from the bean sprouts, a bit of chili sauce for some heat, and the house sauce really brought everything together. None of the flavors were distinctly overpowering but a great combination all together. What really suprised me was the fact the grilled their pork which added a nice smoke flavor that I really hadnt had before in Vietnamese cuisine. As we were finishing the Chef came by and spoke to us about the food. He recognized that we were both chefs ourselves and had a great conversation about the food and his approach.
Overall it was one of the best meals, not just Vietnamese, I have had in a long time and for the price which was under $10, I can't help myself to think about when Im going to go back which I think will be later tonight for the soup the Chef recommended.

Great place. I love this place. The food is excellent and very reasonably priced. The service is quick and attentive, and it's great to see a restaurant where the chef will walk out and talk to you. Chef Ricky is the best, he's never steered us wrong when asked to 'surprise us' when a friend and I will go and want to try something new. If only I lived closer, I'd eat there so much more often. Definitely try this place out, it's very worth it.

So fresh, so delicious! I had never had viet food before, now I am hooked on this place. The pho is so good I was afraid not to get it the first few times I ate here, but I finally branched out and tried the noodle dish with chargrilled chicken, fresh veggies and a sweet house sauce. Incedible! The fried spring rolls wrapped in lettuce are great too. When you leave this place you feel so satisfied and almost healthier if that's possible.

Exotic flavors and aromas and fun food as well. Vietnam Grille provided me my third Vietnamese meal and my favorite. I loved the place the minute I walked in. The aromas were exotic for me, but enticing, engaging. For a starter I had the crispy spring rolls, unlike any I've had before in other Vietnamese or Thai establishments. Their texture and taste were exquisite, mouth orgasm tasty, and wonderfully fun to eat. My main course, lemon grass chicken broken rice, offered new flavors for me and made me glad I tried this well-touted and well-appreciated restaurant. I had never imagined broken rice before. It was a melt-in-the-mouth sensation.

I arrived late afternoon, well before the dinner crowd and long after the lunch crowd, so the place was quiet. I explained to my server that I am relatively new to Vietnamese food, so she patiently answered all of my questions, even those about pronunciation of dishes. When the food came I was delighted. Tastes and fragrances were wonderful. After a few minutes the chef came out and suggested ways to eat the food, how to mix the spices, sauces, herbs. What a treat he offered with his insights, not to mention his complimentary small bowl of pho, unlike pho I had had elsewhere-much more flavorful and more fragrant.

Vietnam Grille is spotlessly clean and unpretentiously simple. It says "authentic" on the outside, and maybe, to the snob, "un-special," but it is a very special place and a Charlotte treasure. Go there soon!

Pretty darn tasty. The place is small, but clean. The service was good; the waiters were polite and attentive, but not over bearing.

As for the food I'm Vietnamese so everything is always compared to mom's.

1. The pho I would give a 6.5. The flavor of the broth was 'muted' for lack of a better word. I wish I could have tasted more of the grilled ginger/onion and star anise.

2. Broken rice w/grilled pork an 8. I had to order a side of com tham, but the grilled pork was seasoned to perfection. The cha was overcooked...rubbery.

3. Vermicelli w/grilled pork 9. The noodles sit on a bed of uber fresh rao (greens) and bean sprouts. The nuoc mam that comes w/it was seasoned just right.

Ben Thanh vs. Vietnam Grille? I prefer the former, but V. Grille is so much closer I think I'll be returning.

Best Restaurant in the US (OK.. Carolinas). I have been fed/served by Chef Ricky Lai since 1988.
Although the restaurant does not get many kudos for decor and ambiance, the food is just phenomenal.
The Pho soup has the most delicate taste than all of the other ones I have had around the world. Have your palate discover new taste and textures... you will not be disappointed.

PHENOMENAL!. ---Brace yourselves, as this is a VERY long review----

Hanging out with other foodies in San Diego I was constantly dragged along on hunts for perfect pho. It was definitely a trend among the foodies to compare pho notes, finding the most bizarre and hidden vietnamese restaurants and bragging about it among other gourmands.

The fact is, I never really liked pho, my friends would ooh and ahh and suck down giant bowls of it. I'd do the same, thinking to myself, well this is good right? I just must not get it. Pho never really seemed all that special to me.

Having moved to the mountains of WNC, my cravings for vietnamese food have grown exponentially, not pho of course, but delicious spring rolls wrapped with lettuce and the like, maybe a bahn mi sandwich. The fact was, there are no vietnamese restaurants in Asheville, and you always want what you can't have.

On a recent trip to Charlotte I sought out the most accessible and highest rated viet restaurant, which just happened to be Vietnam Grille. I couldn't have been happier.

Open till 10, it fit right in with my schedule. Well lit, and open seating, I was pleased immediately upon entering. Wasting no time I asked for an order of crispy spring rolls. Delivered quickly PIPING hot, and amazingly crunchy, the spring rolls were like biting into little nuggets of heaven. A perfect blend of pork and shrimp.

When my server returned to take my order, I was torn between three items. The house special bun, the deluxe broken rice, and the pho. I didn't really want the pho though, it's just... that's what people get. I asked my server for his recommendation. He informed me that the pho was amazing. I winced, and flipped a coin for guidance.

Heads: Get the pho
Tails: Get something awesome!

The coin launched into the air, and landed in my palm... heads. Fate had decided for me. It was time for the pho. Once again I was amazed at the speed in which my order was brought to the table. The pho came out steaming, beautiful. From the aroma it was instantly apparent that this was no standard bowl of pho. This was something special.

I got to the process I'd seen time and time again, tearing up the basil leaves, putting the meat under the noodles, adding the sprouts and lime juice. Just as I went to reach for the Sriracha a man came to our table, he looked at my bowl and said, "Before you use that, try it first" "People always ruin the broth before tasting what the chef has prepared"

I was taken aback, how could I be so rude? I instantly complied and brought a spoonful of the golden, transparent soup to my lips. To call it an explosion of flavor would be an overstatement, it was much more subtle than that. Tiny waves of flavor, layered together to form a perfect tapestry of delight rolled over my tongue. I had never tasted something so light, but full of character. Exceptional, something truly intelligent and delicious.

Suddenly it became apparent to me what pho was supposed to taste like, it's supposed to be like this. 3000 miles away from my friends in desperate search of the perfect bowl of pho, I was sitting right in front of it, and relishing every morsel of it. And to think that if I were to have added even a drop of Hoisin or Sriracha I could have tainted this perfect creation.

The man introduced himself as the chef and co-owner Ricky Lai. The rest of my meal was spent having a fantastic conversation with Mr. Lai about food, thought, practice, and the fact that Asheville is in DESPERATE need of a vietnamese eatery.

It was truly a pleasure to find and eat at the Vietnam Grille. It will surely become a source of pilgrimage when the cravings for vietnamese food become overwhelming.

Terrific experience.... Vietnam Grille is a real find. I'm an out-of-towner who visits Charlotte on infrequent business trips, but I'll be coming back here again and again when I am in town. Vietnam Grille is a true family-run restaurant with a warm, pleasing, inviting atmosphere (it's clearly a nicely dressed-up former fast-food place) and authentic, fresh, exceptionally well (and lovingly) prepared Vietnamese foods. I had two of my favorites-- fresh spring rolls with shrimp and pork and bun thit thuong--while my colleague tried the vegetarian pho and chicken spring roll. Both main courses were loaded with a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs that are classics of Vietnamese cuisine. Service was kind, attentive, and family-style.

We didn't bother with BYOB, but we saw a couple leaving with a partial bottle. Nice option to have.

We'll be back.

Great change of pace. I personally love visiting places that provide a pleasant suprise. Vietnam Grille did this perfectly. It is on South Blvd (across from Bill Spoon's BBQ) and blends in with a number of other suspect looking places around there. I'm pretty sure it used to be a Jersey Mike's and you can still sort of tell from the outside that they are living in space designed by someone else. You get inside though, and everything is decorated nicely. The staff greeted us (and everyone esle we saw) warmly and showed us to our table.
It was just me and my wife dining. We split spring rolls, then beef soup (VERY big bowls), then chicken curry (all recommended by our waiter). It was plenty of food and everything was delicious. Even the garnishes (e.g. sliced tomato & cucumber with the spring rolls) were fresh and tasty. Best of all, the bill was under $25!
The price brings up an important point. Part of the reason is seems like such a steal is that they don't sell alcohol. No worries though, they encourage BYOB. We heard this ahead of time and brought one of our favorite wines from home. Shortly after we were seated we were greeted by a waiter with wine glasses and a corkscrew. (No corkage fees). We saw other tables receive glasses for beer they had brought. I don't know if I would like it if every restaurant did this, but it adds to the uniqueness of this place and is a nice change of pace.
It was decently crowded during the week, and I'm not sure if they take reservations. Hopefully this is a sign that these friendly purveyors of fresh, tasty food will find success in a developing area of the city.

Bliss in a bowl. Not my first foray into Vietnamese food. Everything was just fantastic. The staff are great. The restaurant is very clean and cute and very comfortable considering it doesn't look like much from the outside. They have done a wonderful job with it.
Their menu was very well put together. My husband has not eaten much Viet. food and our waiter was more than happy to explain everything to him. We had the Summer Rolls with Chicken and the peanut sauce had wonderful depth of flavor. We also had the steamed dumplings which you could tell were hand made. The Deluxe Pho (soup) with everything was the best I have ever had. My husband had the Bun with pork and he was so pleased.
Can't say enough about this place. I will be back often. It is a litte bit out the way for us but the food was so good I don't mind.
It is BYOB which I am glad I found out before we went. Not a big deal. I haven't had a bill that low in a while.

Food that makes you smile. What a lucky gem this place is! The exterior is unassuming and the location is not the most accessible on South Boulevard, but don't let that stop you. The food is phenomenal and definitely the best Vietnamese I've had in Charlotte. I introduced a friend to this restaurant yesterday, and the expression of joy on their face when their broken rice arrived and as they ate perfectly illustrated why I think Charlotte is fortunate Vietnam Grille has come to town. The lemongrass shrimp is my favorite, but I've yet to order a bun, pho or broken rice dish that didn't make me wish I'd picked up an extra meal for leftovers!

Great Vietnamese Food!. Wonderful food, lovely friendly service. The reasonably priced meals are fresh, fragrant and tasty. They were very happy to explain the dishes to those new to VN cuisine but feel free to experiment without worries, good food is good food, very healthy, no msg. They even serve a toned down fish sauce in addition to the full strength version. The pho is fragrant and absolutely delicious. The inside is clean, lovely decor, nice spare atmosphere, so don't let the repurposed exterior keep you from walking in. I've eaten in Viet Nam - this place is great. Welcome to Charlotte!

Recently, my friend, Noora, introduced me to the gloriousness that is Vietnam Grille. I don't know what rock I've been living under, but holy horse apples, that place is amazing. Located in the corner of a somewhat sketchy-looking shopping center, I didn't have the highest of expectations the first time I walked through the doors. However, Vietnam Grille is definitely a case where I shouldn't have judged the book-shaped restaurant by its cover.

Ok, another place we heard to check out for Pho was Vietnam Grille. Oh LORD! Their Pho Tai was top banana! Highly, highly recommended. This is the best Pho I’ve had in Charlotte so far, and I’m a bit of a Pho nerd. The broth is so aromatic you just can’t stop, even after you know you’re full. I love that moment when you first dig in, blindingly happy, then you start to sweat, and sweat, and you blow your nose, then you keep digging through the mysteriously thin soup; like unearthing bits of buried treasure. Last time we were in Charlotte I dined with my parents at Vietnam Grille . We usually go to Saigon Palace , which is only a few blocks away, but this time we wanted to try something new. Vietnam Grille is fairly small and homey and is obviously family owned. It would be difficult to accommodate a very large group here but it is a nice and cozy place for a couple or family. The menu is ranges from soups, noodles and rice dishes to traditional Vietnamese dishes and beverages. We tried the pictured house special vermicelli, which was very good - lots of picked carrots and radishes and tasty meat - as well as the seafood noodle soup (not pictured). The soup didn't stand out as much as the vermicelli, but the fresh spring rolls were very good - one of my favorite foods! I don't think Vietnam Grille has the yellow pancake (banh xeo) we like so much on the menu.

I've been on a roll this summer, trying out new foods and places as much as I can. I guess you can call it a "summer roll". But seriously, terrible jokes aside, I've seen plenty of good reviews for this place that my interested was peaked. The pictures kind of persuaded my decision and I knew what I wanted going in. The staff working there was very friendly and fast, which was great. I showed our server a picture of what I wanted, she told me what it was and I went from there. I ordered some summer rolls to start. Then for my main dish, I ordered the pork and shrimp broken rice. It came with a salad on the side. The summer rolls were okay, they had seemed to have more noodles than most of the ones I eat. But I still ate every bite. The shrimp and pork broken rice was very tasty and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't the best that I've had locally, but it was still good enough that I would order it again. Overall, I had a great experience and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Traveling on South Blvd yesterday, after having skipped breakfast. I saw the open sign for the Vietnam Grille and quickly did a u-turn. There was only one other group of customers seated for lunch. The menu was full of classic and authentic Vietnamese dishes, soups and sandwiches. Both healthy, because of the freshness of the vegetables and other natural ingredients; as well as hearty and filling because of the portion sizes. Only one young waitress and a gentleman were solely responsible for all of the deliciousness being served and coming out of the kitchen for all of their customers. I occasionally enjoy a beer with my Asian cuisine, as it can really help to temper the spiciness of some dishes. Unfortunately, no alcoholic beverages were being served. There to-go order business far and away exceeded and helped too offset the lack of customers who chose to dine-in. Although, by the time that I left, there were at least 5 tables with customers who chose to dine-in. The food was as fresh and authentic as possible. The portions were very nicely sized. Although I was a little disappointed with the lacking amount of seafood in the Pho Do Bien(#23), seafood soup. The pork Banh Mi/French sandwich that I had was well put together and full of both flavor and vegetables. The pork in the sandwich had a very nice char and crispiness to it. The restaurant was very clean and well-maintained. And everything was handicap accessible. Hand written papers on the restaurant windows were posted with variations of help-wanted signs. If you took the time to read this review, please take a 1/2 second and click like. Thank you.

A few years ago the food alone was a 10/10. As of last week, its a 6/10. A small group of us arrived around 3:00 to a quiet (clean) restaurant. The service was adequate, the food was above average but nothing special. They do not accept AMEX or AppleCard which was awkward. Perhaps we missed the signs, but buyer be warned. I still have fond memories of this place right after it opened, sadly the memories did not match the current reality. The Pho was good, the rolls were delicious and the pork meatballs were on-point.

Needed a new Vietnamese Restaurant since the one on Steele Creek closed. Saw this place and checked it out. Service was good now granted we were there after lunch. Pork Fresh Spring rolls were great. Wife had the Char-grilled pork Vermicelli bowl and was very tasty. Had the Pho Dac Biet and the serving size was adequate and of course I'm always there for the broth which was one point. Highly recommend and will be back soon

Solid 8.5/10, Huge portion, full of flavor, lots of toppings. $25-30 for lunch, not bad at all. Tried the Vietnamese coffee, i’m amazed. Service is nice tho (?) I wonder why people give bad reviews.

As far as I am concerned, this place is the pinnacle of Vietnamese food in Charlotte. Incredible fresh food. I've tried at least two dozen different items on their menu and couldn't say a bad thing about any of them. Pho and Buns are off the hook! Try the #17 for something new and different!

I like Vietnamese cuisine and for Father's day we went there to eat. It's rated in the top three VN restaurants in Charlotte. It's not upscale; very clean and easy access. We had several choices, including very fresh and crisp spring rolls, pho, and other specialties. Everything was well done, flavorful and well presented. Prices are very reasonable and definitely would go back. No alcohol license yet, waiting for it. Jasmine tea was very good.

Great food as always, I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this place. Get the number 24 if you like what you see in the picture. Food is on point so is the service.

Very good food. Huge portions. One dish could easily feed a teenage boy or two adults. If you even think you need a refill on your drink, they're there filling it.

I really enjoyed my time here. The food was good, and the service was beyond excellent! It's very small and intimate, but only added to the experience. They only serve Heineken, but we were told by the server that customers could bring their own beer and wine :) I would come back for the service alone though!

It could have been better, but its good. I got take out and the meat was really chewy. Usually the meat is separate from the broth when I get pho togo from other places. The broth was really good just wish my meat wasn't over cooked.
