Great service, and amazing food! The waiter recommended the perfect bottle of wine for my companion and I. The wine list is huge and he was very keen to answer all of my questions (I wish I remembered his name!). I had the tomato mozzarella salad to start and the scallop special as my entree. My companion had the New York Strip. We agreed that everything was cooked perfectly.
The portions were just the right size so nonetheless I was very satisfied at the completion of my entree. I looked over the desert menu and everything sounded delicious but I was very full so I settled on a shot of espresso which was a nice ending to the meal. Almost forgot to add that the waiter brought us a complementary slice apple pie with our espresso. I was able to enjoy a few bites, it was wonderful!
I will most definitely be back... Annie Gunns just might be my new favorite restaurant!
The diversity of the menu is appealing and the quality of the food is exellent. The wine list is extensive and bartenders are skilled. Annie Gunn's is not an inexpensive restaurant but if you do not mind paying for quality food your dining experience will always be special. We enjoyed the two seafood specials which were perfect. AG's crab cakes are unparalled. One of our favorite restaurants for the past 20-years.
We had the most wonderful anniversary meal. Where else can you find steak tartare, white asparagus flown in from Holland, amazing lamb chops and blue cheese potato casserole, top it off with one of the best apple pies I have tasted. Great waiter, Tim made the evening extra special. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
We have never had a bad meal there. Chef and Lesley and the staff always take great care of us and we highly recommend them. Annie Gunn’s is our favorite place to eat. Also a big thanks to Andy.
Truly my favorite! We drive 2 hours for Annies. The staff...Michelle and Judith are so fabulous, they definitely make the whole dining experience even better! We’ve never ever had anything that we didn’t like. Thanks for always being so awesome and making the food superb!
Wow, wow, wow! Amazing meal. Crab cakes are a must for starters, the Ceaser salad was fantastic and the bone in filet was phenomenal! We celebrated my wife's 40th Birthday and our server Karen was extremely accommodating and the consummate professional. Can't wait for our next visit!
My Wife and I went after finishing our Christmas Shopping last week and everything was fantastic, as usual. Our waitress, who mentioned that she was fairly new, was awesome. My Wife had a fish sandwich special and I had the smoked ribeye. The sandwich was huge and delicious and the smoked ribeye (which I've had before) was amazing. Salads, desserts, beer, cocktails......everything was great. Enjoyed a wonderful meal and made reservations for valentine's day before leaving.
Our reservation was ready as soon as we walked inside the door. The service was impeccable, and the food was the icing on top of the cake...from the seafood platter to my daughter’s cinnamon shake, everything was perfect! Thank you for making a family night out magnificent!!!
Our go to place to celebrate or just to have a great meal. Service and food outstanding!!!
There were 4 of us for lunch and we kept it simple. Still, the sandwiches were great. What made it nice were the two appetizers. We had the shrimp and the oysters. Yet, the very best part of our visit was our waiter. He was so friendly and charming. He really chatted us up and made our lunch so special.
I have never had a better meal or service. Hands down. I had the smoked shrimp appetizer & the lamb dinner - both were utterly fantastic. This restaurant rating needs more than five stars. Ten stars.
My wife and I had an anniversary dinner there on 4/21. Typical busy Friday night, yet they were able to sit us 30 mins earlier than our reservation of 9 pm. Our server Perry was excellent, very outgoing and personable. My wife has a gluten allergy, so he had some great suggestions and also checked with chef when needed. We had the cold smoked shrimp appetizer, which was phenomenal and salads to start. My wife had a filet and I had the New York Strip, both cooked perfectly. Great night with amazing service and meal. Thanks Annie Gunn's!!
Let me start by saying this is one of my favorite restaurants of all times. I've been going here since it first opened when it was just a couple tables in the bar. It never disappoints!
Annie Gunn's probably needs no other positive reviews but I just wanted to let oyster enthusiasts, such as myself, know they have the best in town! Hands down! Better than DeMun, better than Pearl and comparing Broadway to them is a joke! No one compares. I recommend eating their Prussian style, but tell the server to leave off the salmon roe...it is way too strong...the black caviar is perfect but they added what I suspect is salmon roe and its strong and fishy. Doesn't work, it's yucky! However, very easy to pick off!
I get that St. Louis has a little bit of city vs. county competition, but the number of times that knowledgable food enthusiasts that I trust have brushed off “The Gunn” is both disheartening and aggravating. If your aim is to eat at all of St. Louis’ best restaurants, a visit to Annie Gunn’s is in order. Actually, two visits are in order. Go for lunch and ask to be seated in the semi-outdoor atrium. Go for dinner and enjoy a decadent steak dinner with the finest wines. At some point I’ll write about their dinner, but this post will serve as a lunch guide.
Annie Gunn's longevity is no surprise. High quality ingredients went into all of the dishes we tried and execution was excellent. I've heard and read good things about their burgers so I'll have to make another trip to try those. Often I'm asked what the best steakhouse is in St. Louis and my usual reply is the one you make at home. As George Mahe recently reported, you pay for a lot of extra expenses when you order a steak (or really anything) at a restaurant - all the more reason why execution should be spot on when you do order a steak, especially at a steakhouse. Still there's little substitute for a nice dinner out for special occasions and for that purpose, Annie Gunn's hits on all cylinders
I've never had anything I didn't like (lunch or dinner) Yes, it's expensive, but yes, it's worth it.
Service has always been pleasant and genuinely sincere from management that you enjoy your experience.
Ate here again (lunch) on 4/15/16. Made the healthier choice of roasted turkey on whole grain bread with tomato jam-SO GOOD! You know what's so great about how this place? As we ate in the atrium, we observed other diners from all walks of life...a 'mature' group of ladies enjoying salads and Perrier, a couple enjoying burgers and beer wearing their 'loved' Blues jerseys, and a father who had just flown his private jet into town to have carpaccio and strip steak with his two little girls...which leaves us...just a normal couple in tennis shoes and jeans, people watching as we enjoy the savory flavors delivers Every. Single. Time. This is why we love this place. Don't change a thing.
The Classic Burger is huge, juicy and delicious. We started with the potato pancake which covered with thick cut premium bacon and a pear relish...awesome. My wife had the fried Bologna sandwich which was surprisingly good. The burgers are huge. Share an appetizer and a burger.
Great Lunch. Dropped in for an impromptu birthday lunch on Thurs. Bit of a wait but the market kept us busy. Seafood stew for B and specialty burger for me. both very good. Lunch menu has a lot to offer and we highly recommend. Service was excellent.
The Proof Is in the Pudding. We stumbled upon Annie Gunns off of Highway 64 accidentally, as we were searching for a generic place to eat. Good 'ole Urbanspoon popped up with this recommendation. It at first appears like a roadside pub and market, but once inside you realize it offers full scale dining at equally full scale prices. We were sat on the patio overlooking the well camouflaged and heavily landscaped parking lot. But it wasn't unpleasant by any means. The service was swarming, down to earth and very competent. They have been well trained in making the customer feel at home. I really enjoyed the casual, yet professional vibe they had. We were offered an apéritif, some bread and a cocktail menu. I tried the gin with two kinds of bitters, and it was a refreshing start to the meal. We opted for the Chef's choice mixed appetizer platter of smoked sausage, razor sliced imported hams, smoked pork belly with honey glaze, trout pâté, pickled vegetables, soft and smoked cheeses, and salty condiments of olives and nuts. Every single bite was well prepared by the friendly and welcoming sous chef who delivered it to our table. The food was served on a large wooden bread board and was quickly devoured by all. The kids enjoyed their burgers and mac and cheese. Another diner loved his pan-seared spicy trout with seasoned rice, and my wife enjoyed her cold smoked whitefish with fig salad. My starter of cheddar soup was earthy and had a biting, savory blend. My lamb chops were amazing, seared crispy and sweet with a chutney onion glaze, and cooked perfectly medium rare and tender. The accompanying blue cheese and gruyere layered potato gratin was delightfully browned on the edges, and had a wonderful tang and creaminess that was truly satisfying. Even the side of sweet potato hash was perfectly seasoned with nutmeg and a maple syrup and black pepper garnish. It was reminiscent of a sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving. I finished with their famous bread pudding saturated with a French custard and raisins and topped with a world class caramel bourbon sauce that makes you smile. Far and away, the pudding was the best I have ever tasted. The other deep chocolate mousse, rich and almost bitter, and macerated berry cakes were well received by kids and adults alike. The price was steep, but in line with the excellent quality of the food. I want to revisit on a special occasion so that I have a proper excuse to try that astonishingly good bread pudding one more time. That alone should make this place a destination restaurant on your wish list.
Excellent burgers, top notch steaks with well thought out sides. Restaurant oasis in far west county.
Excellent food, pricey but Chef Lou Rook never disappoints. I've never had a bad meal there
Stopped in for a late lunch on St Paddy's day. We were seated right away even though there were nine of us and the place was really hopping! Ordered drinks and entrees. Took a long time for everything to show up, but the food was excellent. I had the smoked seafood appetizer followed by a bowl of Irish Lamb Stew. Great flavor if you like rosemary--I do. Others had corned beef and cabbage which was also very good. Desserts included apple pie--pronounced "awesome" by the girls. Sweet potato doughnuts with coffee were well worth the cost in calories and carbs. A bagpiper and a leprechaun both showed up and when we left at 6 p.m. the place was really getting wound up! Looked like everyone was having a great time. As we made our way out through the Irish revelry all I could think was, "That'll do, Annie. That'll do."
Mmmm. Best steak my husband and i have had in st. louis. pricey, but worth the treat.
Down the road from Chesterfield Mall. Went for lunch and had the Grilled Shrimp with Barbeque sauce recommended by our waitress. Kind of pricy at $14 for only 3 jumbo shrimp, but delicious. Highly recommend the crab cake sandwich if they have it- it is slightly spicy with andouille sausage in it but soooo good. Hubby had sweet glazed salmon with polenta & green beans that he liked but my crab cake sandwich was the big winner.
It's good, but.... Annie Gunn's does have some phenomenal wine lists, and delicious food, but I wonder if this isn't just how a restaurant should be. The problem I have with Gunn's is the cost. It is exhorbent, and I just don't know if it is worth the cost. I enjoy my meal each time I go, but I would expect no less when I am paying so much. I continue to go, so there must be something that attracts, however, it doesn't wow me like some of the smaller more specialized locations I have enjoyed. Good food overall, and great wine, of course.
It's a steakhouse. It's incredibly overpriced for what you should expect from a steakhouse. A good one is good, but it's not spectacular.
I'm a transplant and when I hear someone wax poetic about mashed potatoes, my reaction is 'it's just made the way that you should make it' as opposed to 'omg it's the best ever'. Shouldn't any restaurant provide decent food? Is there just so much bad food in west county that when someone delivers a medium rare steak with a side of mash, that people do donuts over it?
Even with all of that, we occasionally go to Annie Gunn's. But this isn't 'fine dining', it just wants to be and charges for it. Be prepared for a crowd and noise. The place to take grandma when she comes to town and you don't want to bother driving into the city. Not worth the price on an average night.
Excellent Lunch!. I have dined numerous times at Annie Gunn's for lunch and have always had excellent meals with great service. I dont recommend eating before going down the street to Skyzone trampolines though :P
Fantastic but pricy.. Easily severs the best meat in all of the St. Louis area but at a price. If you can foot the bill, you are sure to never be disappointed.
If you still want all the flavor without the hole in the wallet, their burgers are rated best around and reasonably priced from $10-$15.
Great time. Love this Pub/Steakhouse. Great atmosphere and and good service. The bone in fillet has a spectacular flare. You have to see it. The fresh fish was astounding. Great service and nice people. Worth going to!
I've been eating at Annies since before I can remember, and at the Smokehouse Market Delie before that! I LOVE this place, it's somewhere you can go and the staff knows you by name, they have all been there for so long and any new members ate quick to learn who you are! I'm a sucker for the Potato soup and ceaser salad, I don't even have to tell Annie what I want to order it's just my "usual" I recommend this amazing place to anyone and everone!!!! Just make sure you save me a seat!!!!
Get Your Fork. Great Steak and burgers, pricey for some.
Lamb Chops. Simply THE BEST lamb chops. I rarely even try lamb anywhere else now, because I am always dissapointed. Recently, I was at a five-star restaurant (The Highlands in Birmingham), so I braved the lamb there. It was delicious, and the owner was complimented when I told him that I had finally had lamb equal to Annie Gunn's (equal, not better!)--found out he is aware of Annie Gunn's lamb chops, too! GET THE LAMB CHOPS!
Still one of my favorites. It's not uncommon for my husband and I to frequent Annie Gunn's 3 to 5 times a week when we are in town. We have a lot of history there. I got engaged at the bar next to the Stanley Cup, and held my pre-wedding party and husband's surprise birthday party both on the patio.
Last night we shared a 10 ounce filet mignon cooked to perfection with their killer mashed potatoes. A glass of Nickel & Nickel syrah paired well with the steak.
Yes, the food is pricey but it is always excellent quality. The best deal on the menu is the grilled meat loaf, and you can't go wrong with any of the soup offerings. Make sure you save room for dessert, especially their bread pudding with bananas & hot buttered rum sauce or their creme brulee.
Quite Good. This place reminds me of a West County version of McGurk's (in Soulard). Much much better food, however. I had Chef Lou's monthly burger and it was divine. He combined 5 different cuts of beef with a tiny portion of pork... ground it all up, and voila! What a burger! I look forward to trying the rest of the menu.
Hadn't been for a while. Busy Sat night with great steaks and service. Yes still going strong
Excellent steaks and service! High pricedbut you leave there full and satisfied! Well worth the money! One of the best steaks I have ever had!
Alot of Hype, just ok food. This restaurant is extremely over rated. I mean, REALLY over rated. The menu is tired and dated. The food is ok, but not worth $75 a head, minimum. There were some really obnoxious patrons at the bar that were really loud, lude and annoying. I do wish that the management would have said something to them. Also - there is smoking in the bar, which half of it is in the dining room and the smoke wafts into the dining room and is very off putting.
My meter for a great restaurant is either a ceasar salad or scallops. Since we were in a steak house, I opted for the ceasar. It was a tired as the menu. The lettuce was wilted and looked like it had been sitting in that really heavy mayo based ceasar dressing for hours. It was listed on the menu as traditional dressing...I think not. There was no lemon taste, no anchovy taste and honestly, the only way I knew it was a ceasar was due to the parm cheese. However, the curried ginger carrot soup was really delicious. We got typical steaks for our entrees. Mine was a very cool medium rare...some would venture to say that was a full on rare, but the filet was of good quality so it didn't bother me too much. There was not enough seasoning on the filet. I would have liked to see a peppercorn crust or some sort of finishing salt. My husband had the dry aged t-bone and the flavor was terrific. His was also more rare than medium rare but again, it was not a bother. We both got a side of the mushroom ragu. The Ozark mushroom version was amazing. The sides lack luster so be prepared. Also - make sure you take a sweater, even in 100 degree weather, it was so cold inside the restaurant that my mashed potatoes congealed and were inedible.
We didn't do dessert, but from what we saw at the surrounding tables, they looked ok.
Nice. Annie Gunn's is the place where I would entertain someone special with impressive food in an informal setting. Kind of pricey but worths it.
I admire tommy boy. The best place to eat in st louis. keep up the good work -----------tom and lou-love you guys
Food was excellent, great appetizers. Lamb chops were perfect. It is pricey but portions were surprisingly generous. Service was pretty good.
Lamb Chops. GET THE LAMB CHOPS.
Better know somebody. Annie's has great food but they REALLY cater to their regular clientele and discriminate against those of us who only visit a few times a year. Guess that's good for the regulars. ;-)
Posted by kathrynquijano 2 My friends, you are in for quite a treat this week. You see, while I was flakily in and out of #bloglyfe, I was secretly out on some swell holiday adventures and, quite frankly, having way too much fun way too many good eats doing so. Well, you lucky dogs you. I’m sharing the whole she-bang! Before I get into the thick of things, I should backtrack a bit. I should probably explain that I was not always this way. Though I grew up in an enormous filipino family that enjoys curious, delicious foods from near and far, I was a weird girl-child that only ate Honey Nut Cheerios and the occasional Big Mac from my tiny hometown digs of Madisonville, KY. When we did venture outside of the bubble, I vividly remember pouting in the car when my parents decided on Indian Food, ordering chicken fingers from Sushi restaurants, and getting $5 for every raw oyster I ate from my dad in his attempt to culture me. I was pretty much the worst. Of course, eventually I grew out of t
I highly recommend Annie Gunn's for a hearty and inventive dinner - their menu has a nice mix of classic dishes that appeal to pickier folks like me as well as more exotic / gourmet dishes...
