Bring a note pad to jot down all of the meal specials beyond the great menu selection. Tough decisions on the many wonderful options.

I've been there twice. The food was spectacular both times. The service was wonderful. Tavira is a fine restaurant at which to have a fine civilized evening of dining. We'll see you all again soon!

Have been coming here off and on for years. Quality has remained consistently high. Truly a Portuguese restaurant, heavy on seafood obviously but has meat options as well. All choices well prepared and delicious. The grilled calamari (pictured) was perfectly cooked and prepared. Had whole grilled branzino but the picture shows the ravaged carcass of the fish so clearly it also was delicious. The decor is charming. The 3rd pic was more impressive in person with wall mural reflected in the framed mirror. Wine list leans heavily toward underappreciated Portuguese wines which are wonderful. We've never personally been disappointed and the staff are consistently friendly, professional and attentive. We should be coming here more often.

This is excellent, authentic Portuguese food with ingredients and dishes that taste like they were fed to you in Madeira itself. Every single thing we ordered was fantastic and I am recommending this to all of my family when they visit the area. For anyone coming for a first visit, park in the parking garage with a Tavira sign over the entrance. Then, along one of the walls of the parking garage there will be black doors with large windowpanes that have a faded “Tavira” sign on it. That is your entrance so you don’t get stuck at the wrong one!

Absolutely delicious! We came here for a lovely dinner. The restaurant is cozy and beautiful, and the food brings back memories of our trip to Portugal. I love the fried cod fritters. We had the calf liver, which was cooked so well and tasted like a steak. The braised pork was so tender and delicious with bread. Topped it off with a warm pasteis de nata The staff was friendly and welcoming

Have been dining at Tavira for years and love it. Spectacular Portuguese food, excellent service and a comfortable location. High points here include the tempting array of specials — a wide variety of thoughtful seafood and meat dishes and, if you’re not in the mood for the specials, the 3-course prix fixe dinner ($38 as of late 2023 and an excellent value.) The standard a la carte menu can be rewarding, too. Recent winners have included the grilled squid appetizer and swordfish steak specials. The pork shank (available on the prix fixe and a la carte menus) is one of my favorites, as is the iconic clams and chorizo appetizer. Desserts are light and delicious — save room. The servers at Tavira are experts at presenting the list of specials with drama and delivering each course with impeccable timing. Service is thoughtful and attentive. The location is quirky: in the basement of an office building on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase Lake. But tables are well-spaced, the dining area is comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing. Highly recommended.

I didn’t know how we could have missed this cute restaurant for all these years. Maybe it’s in the basement of a huge building. There’s a sign on the building but that’s all. You park inside the building and a green restaurant door points the way. The food is delicious and the service attentive. Try it out you will love it.

Another wonderful experience at Tavira. The waiter was attentive and informative. The meal was nicely prepared and served hot. Also, there was a nice choice of wines, many of them reasonably priced.

What a hidden gem! I visited recently for the first time, not knowing what to expect and was blown away! The dinner was amazing, elegantly prepared and so delicious, the dining room was beautiful, and the service was so fantastic. I went with a tasting menu, and every dish was more delicious than the last. Truly fantastic. Highly recommend!

Food and service was amazing. My wife was not happy with the fries that came with the streak. Servers and kitchen staff went out of their way and made her fresh fries. They were amazing. Definitely coming back. You will not be disappointed.

I had a small reunion with some friends who I went to high school with in Portugal. It was an absolutely perfect evening; the ambience, the service and of course the food. Everything was wonderful. I will definitely come back.

Fine Portuguese and Mediterranean dining. The place is a little bit hard to get to, but once you know it's super easy. Small place, but with a big menu in taste. Lots of options if you are looking for some Portuguese food. Don't forget to end the meal with the Portuguese delicacy, the pastel de nata!

We traveled to Portugal before covid and fell in love with the food. Tavira is a wonderful place to find authentic Portuguese cuisine near home! The service was excellent and the food delicious. I’m incredibly happy to have a place like this nearby. I highly recommend the Medalhoes de Bife and the poached pear. The pastel de nata was also almost as good as the ones we got in Lisbon.

Wonderful flavors, seafood is a must. Hidden restaurant in the old Chevy Chase Bank/CapitalOne building in the basement. Good value for Chevy Chase /Bethesda. Hopefully you hey can survive with their real estate rates increasing because of the new development.

Get the clams! The mixed meat platter was small so if you have 4 people get two.

So delicious! Not many Portuguese restaurants around here, so this was a treat. Amazing bread, apps, entree, and the pastel de nata was INCREDIBLE. Fancy and good for a date night! Parking a little confusing.

Good food, great service, fantastic birthday dinner!! The (grilled) calamari was arguably the best I've ever had. Although this was my first experience with Portuguese food it definitely will not be my last. Thank you again!!

I don't ever write reviews for restaurants because I never have the time to do it. But I'm making time now to write this review for the Tavira and it was a great experience. I'm a New Yorker from Manhattan and I have a large food palette for great taste. This restaurant blew my expectations away without even trying. Just great service and spectacular food. Worth every dollar. Just try it and see for yourself. Horace was our waiter and he was awesome!
