This ice cream shop is lovely. They have a great ice cream selection, rich history and wonderful staff. I love coming here, even though long lines and parking can be difficult it's so worth it. It's a small shop, but the ice cream is one of a kind. Portions are huge and prices are very good. Plus kids get free ice cream for good grades.
Given that I live right down the street, I have been to Margie's countless times. My husband actually almost hates to go because he almost always hates himself afterwards because it's all so good, you just keep eating and dousing everything in fudge until you have to roll yourself home. You will lose all self control But I digress.
I love, love, love Margie's because even something as simple as an ice cream cone with Peanut Butter Chocolate or Butter Pecan (my two faves) - is just mind blowing-ly good. And their sundaes? Don't even get me started. The hot fudge sundae ends all other hot fudge sundaes. It's so ooey, gooey delicious - I actually have to stop writing this review and go back there right this minute. Buh-bye.
I ordered the turtle sundae, again. For Chicago old-timers there is a hint of Michigan Avenue Charmets in the dish which if you stare at long enough will carry you back in time. 1947? 1965? The ice cream is decent enough but it's the hot fudge, fragrant with cocoa which helped me declare it a night exceeding my expectations.
Margies was the greatest discovery of my life. Fellow Zomans and I went past to Dc and later that night I found one closer to home. The shell like container is awesome! I recommend sitting down if there is room. If the line is long and you sit, the service will be quicker!
One of my favorite places in the summer happens to be steps from the Montrose Brown Line stop.
On a warm summer night there are tons of people gathered outside on the sidewalk diving into the sweet homemade treats of Margie's Candies. Known for their traditional ice cream treats they also make homemade candies and more.
My favorite thing on the planet is their hot fudge sundae, because it's just darn good for the price and #yummmo!
Awesome homemade ice cream. Many times there's a line out the door, as the inside is a little cramped, but there's a few tables and plenty more outside. Looks like most people come for the ice cream and not the candy, though the homemade chocolates definitely represent once inside. The ice cream was so fresh and creamy and definitely had that homemade flavor and quality you would expect. The waffle cone was thick, crunchy and 100% drip free!!
WoW! Sundaes are so giant that we skipped dinner for them! Very good. Felt like you were stepping back in time. All sundaes came with a FULL gravy boat of your topping, whether it was homemade fudge sauce or marshmallow cream. Can't wait to go back!
Easily the best ice cream parlor I have ever experienced. The portions are immense, the quality of the ice cream is superb, and the toppings are epic. You can even buy some of the toppings and take them home, and it is well worth it. I have never been defeated by a banana split before, and Margie's almost succeeded... almost. Incidentally, the prices are very reasonable, especially given what they deliver for the price.
Margie's has been around for over 80 years and is a Chicago institution. It's one of my favorite spots in town for ice cream, and the hot fudge can't be beat. If you're looking for a nostalgic experience then this is your place. I think it clearly edges out both Bobtail and Windy City Sweets so I'm giving them 4.5 out of 5 Pearls.
Love this place and the vibes here are great! I love how they maintained their vintage style and their ice cream is amazing 10/10! As a local real estate advisor, it's uncommon to see businesses that preserve their original charm- something I love that about this place! There is a LARGE menu here that ranges from shakes, to sundaes, to hand-dipped candies, and they even have a food menu! You can dine-in or takeout. We dined in today- they brought us water and menus as soon as we sat down. My boyfriend and I shared the Brownie a la Mode with an extra brownie. The portions are pretty large for sundaes. They offer ice cream scoops on a cone or bowl. Definitely check this place out!
Lots of ice cream choices and toppings and the serving is huge. They have candy like Charleston Chews from decades ago for the nostalgic feelings for those who grew up in the 80s and near that era. The ice cream is creamy. The fruit topping for the mixed fruit sundae is was disappointing bc the fruit was frozen strawberries and pineapple and blueberries. We enjoyed the whipped cream, cherries, and nuts. They have sit down or take out.
This ice cream is worth the price. Their ice cream portions are huge, and the flavors are amazing. I don't mind giving my money to Margie's lol, simply because it is one of the best ice creams ever. I recommend trying the strawberry cheesecake milkshake yummy, it's delicious!
The other location for a classic joint. Tucked under Montrose Brown Line station, it is a spot that draws families around the neighborhood. But for those of us that live afar, it is still worth a visit. Their ice cream sundaes are simply outstanding especially with hot fudge. While the charm of Bucktown location can’t be beat, this Montrose location is just as good in its own way.
Margie's is a lovely little time capsule set up like an old school soda fountain nestled under the Montrose brown line. For me, the main reason to come here are the ice cream sundaes. They are generous in size and come out on a platter with some kind of sauce and a vanilla wafer cookie. You could probably share one easily as it come with three big scoops of ice cream plus toppings. I posted some pictures of the ones our table got. They also have cake and pie, as well as hand dipped candies.
Something really cool about this spot is they also have table service. You can sit down to order your ice cream or dish and take in the charming environment. You can also order at the counter or by a window outside.
I would recommend Margies to anyone and it will certainly remain on my list of places I love in the Chicago North Center area.

Ice-cream was good they have an extremely huge menu. May visit again my only remark is the fruit was not fresh they should not serve it like that it was so bad my husband tried and he said it was sour 😅 my experience became better when they didn't charge me for pick 🙃 for those reasons ill come back it happens over all the ice cream was good there entrées where delicious.
Wonderful homemade ice cream, I've been going to the other location sense I was a kid. The recipes haven't changed at all, same high quality ingredients as when you'd see Margie making the chocolates. Fresh fruit , balanced flavors never cloying, And real melted fudge candy to top it off. This is the best ice cream in the Midwest.💯💙😸✌️
This is the best sundae I have literally ever had. The presentation was phenomenal and the price was honestly a fair price for the serving size. Love the Christmas environment as well. Would return!
So my cousin takes me here today and says this is one of two locations and they make incredible ice cream, shakes, sundays, etc.... and that they make their own ice cream so I said you know what let me go with a chocolate shake because that's the base foundation for what I like. Very smooth chocolate shake and you can taste the actual quality which I always stress in my posts. It's not thick to the point of frustration but just a perfectly balanced and it's probably the top three shakes I've had!! (the other shake is raspberry; no review on that)
Super excited to see so many nostalgic candies and treats.
The ice cream was creamy and the shakes delicious. It is dog friendly and gave my Chipin a frozen treat.
Wow...this place is great.
So old school yet 100% real.
Great ice cream and great staff.
My kids absolutely loved this place. They rate it better than all of the ice cream in Europe.
A+
Love this spot!!!! So happy we get to introduce our baby girl to this place. Had her first Ice Cream at Margie's during the pandemic, so we brought it home to enjoy. She loved the flavors 🍦🍨
This place has an old school feel to it for sure. Feel like my great great parents used to come here and they might have. The original place has been around for almost 100 years!!
(Since 1921.' ) Be warned everything here is absolutely decadent, yummy in every way, & definitely will raise your blood sugar up a bit. Please absolutely try the Sea Salt terrapin, English toffee, and the Sea salt caramel nut ice cream. I absolutely over ate here; but my wife & I had an amazing time to say the least. This company is an institution....I mean the Beatles and Al Capone have eaten here. Wow!! We'll be back😎

So good. Ice cream paradise. Best place for dinner itself 😝
This place came in highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Their ice cream was rich using quality ingredients and chock-ful of add ins. It is right across the Bayan Ko restaurant in Ravenswood where we had dessert after dinner. I would have tried their cake offerings, but I was just too full to try. I will definitely return.
Timeless sundaes and ice cream treats with a fun atmosphere! Come with a friend as the portions are huge! Favorites are the Strawberry Shortcake Sundae and the chocolate syrup sundae!
