Great food with appetizers, their carne asada is so tasty. For dessert I recommend the peach crepes with Carmel. Margaritas are the best. Great staff that care about your dining experience.
I loved this place I went Sunday with my Family to celebrate my Birthday we were 15 in total including kids we were seated in 5min excellent customer service the food is delicious and the Cazuelas are great as well the owner was very nice and even gave us some appetizers on the house we will definitely return soon -thanks

Hands down best local Mexican restaurant around. Great atmosphere, amazing food and drinks. On a summer night nothing beats a few margaritas on the outdoor patio.

El tapatio not only serves the most authentic Mexican cuisine in Chicago but it's reasonably priced without ever compromising the quality. Aside from the food and the ambiance, service and management are top notch. I absolutely love the place, starting from the chips and salsa to any of their delicious 'platillos'. A must in Chicago

Best spot for Mexican food in the neighborhood. We had 2 meals and 4 cocktails. Bill came to $100 after tax. I highly recommend the Burro bowl. It’s very filling and has a mix of everything. They have a large patio that is well spaced out so you can easy park a stroller or large breed dog and not feel like you’re taking up the aisle. Our server Magdalena was super nice, attentive, and gave good recommendations when we didn’t know what to order.
Quality Mexican restaurant with tons of patio and indoor seating. To drink, we got a Paloma and a Margarita which were both okay. To eat, we got 5 tacos with rice and beans: Mar de Cortez, two Pastor, Choriqueso, and Carnitas. My favorites were the Pastor and Choriqueso. For dessert, we got two churros with caramel and chocolate dipping sauce which was the star of the meal. Overall, the food was decent and we enjoyed time outside on the patio.
We’ve been meaning to try this restaurant and finally did for a Sunday evening dinner and wow what a delightful dinner. The restaurant staff are so friendly and the food was excellent and fresh. The salsa verde was so fresh and tasty and the enchiladas were perfection. Thank you. We will be back!
I first tried El Tapatio several years ago at the Glenview, IL location. I had a great experience there.
Last night, I went to their location in the city on Ashland Ave. I recommend this place if you are looking for a nice, reasonably-priced Mexican restaurant in the city with great food and service. I will definitely return.
We were in town to see Teedra Moses. One of my girls that's born & raised in Chicago took us here for lunch - Wendy. The service was amazing. The food was authentic, delicious and fulllll of flavor. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!! I definitely recommend coming here! I can't wait to go back on my next visit! Sooooo gooood!!!
Also, right next door you can get freshly fried churros that melt in your mouth and so many options of toppings and dips!
Easiest 5/5 stars I've ever given! I really like the space and the patio. The food... amazing. If someone knows how to make beans like that, please let me know 😊. No other beans will ever compare. Rice was perfect, good salsa, great micheladas and the churro place right next door makes them fresh per order. Definitely worth visiting!

If you have ever been to a Mexican restaurant then this place will take the new spot in your favorite list. They give you free unlimited chips and salsa which tastes so amazing. Definitely the best salsa I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The perfect texture and perfect spice level that is just spectacular. I ordered and breakfast burrito and it was exactly what I wanted and more. It was only 10 bucks and it was HUGE! With potatoes too! I could only eat half so now I have left overs too. Also, we are outside in their amazing patio space that was very spacious. The only negative I could say was they gave my girlfriend cilatro when she didn’t order it on her taco but the waitress literally came out right after and noticed the mistake and gave us a whole new taco free. Just honestly very professional place and super fun atmosphere. I love it❤️
Over and above the standard US service - after going to several restaurants here I was quite surprised to come across one with such high quality service for the relatively low costs. Staff were friendly and interested in your experience. Food: 100% 5 stars. I was happy to see the Chihuahua cheese in the quesadilla instead of the orange cheese I see around! Can’t wait to visit again. ¡Fantástico!
Food was amazing. The decor was everything. Especially the big open windows. I ordered the steak quesadilla and pork tacos. The meat was grilled just right. Some of the best Mexican food in the city.

Tasty brunch (that goes until 3 on Saturday), nice decor, and a great patio gives this place top marks. The free chips and salsa was nice and spicy, while staying flavorful and fresh. I got the chorizo mixed with hashbrowns with a side of egg and beans for $12. Attached to the place is a churro spot that is worth a pop-in.
So glad I visited this place. I got to sit in the patio. Bit windy, on my day but there's about 17 tables out here. I loved the drinks, got both the tamarind and guayaba based margaritas and I loved them. Just the right mix of tequila/mezcal. I ordered the Steak Sincronizada. I'm very picky with meat, and the asada was good, not great. The Sincronizada is great. It's like a proper quesadilla with asada and with cebolla y tomate. The rice and beans were good to. The salsa was great and the chips were good.
Cherry on top was the flan. Most are gelatin based or an imitation but this one is a real Spanish flan and it's real good.
Definitely coming back.
Service was excellent! They were decorating for Halloween so the place was covered in skeletons, spiders and other fun spooky statues and wall hangings. The food was standard fair, but prices were in line with the quality so that balances out. I had some steak and eggs tacos in flour tortillas. However, due to the construction of the tacos and abundance of delicious sauce, it was impossible to eat them as a “taco” with my hands without causing a massive mess. I ate my breakfast tacos with a fork.
Strong drinks, great outside ambience. And the food was real good too. I got the mushroom tacos with pineapple and mango with the jicama salad, it was delish!!
Others on the table got the burrito bowl and steak sincronizada, both were devoured.
Café el Tapatío is so good! I bring many of my friends here and they all enjoy the food and ambiance. The servers are always friendly, the drinks are always on point and the food is always good! Bonus is: they have a churro place right next door! Literally the best of both worlds! Check this place out!
