Review Chang Tai Chinese Restaurant - Columbiana

Brian Hughes
Cashier demanded that I had to take out since I had my medical alert service dog at my side. Cook came out and said something and all sudden it was ok as I was just leaving rather than debate it with her. Didn’t appreciate the embarrassment in front of the other customers.

Well! I'm somewhat at a loss for words. My experience was the total opposite of most of these reviews. I'd never go back. It's been a long time since I had chinese food THIS bad. Flavor and taste are truly objective "down that way". So you all know, I've had east coast, west coast and all types of styles of Chinese in between and this ones in the bottom 3. Now, the place. Feeling more like I'm in a prison lunchroom rather than a Chinese buffet, I'm surrounded by nothing but blue collar guys all "chowing down on the cheap", lol. Not one lady in sight. Feels kinda creepy, like I'm gonna have to give up my corn bread and puddin if I want protection during outside recess in "the yard", lol. As for the food, typical looking but VERY bland in flavor. Food wasnt even fully prepared till almost noon (restaurant opens at 11), which left you wondering if the buffet is not that big of a business for then. Besides the teriyaki chicken, everything was either bland as all get out or tasted the same and the 2 soup options, egg drop and hot and sour were FAR too full of thickeners and fillers to really enjoy, and also bland. The wontons were good. I do have to admit, that for only $5.85, including fountain drinks and/or hot tea it's not a bad deal. I just wouldn't come here with an expectation above mediocre nor a want for having any craving(s) satisfied. But you can leave full!

Good food at decent prices, but I miss the buffet.

I ordered general tso's chicken. It was not at all spicy it had more of a sweetness to it. The sauce was so thick and cold I could not even get one bite down. This is the last time I order food from this establishment.

Above average taste and food quality for take out. Average cleanliness and general awkwardness. I go out of my way to go here and would highly recommend it for the area’s basic Chinese offerings.

Food is ok kinda weird. We ordered an assortment of things and all of them were different than what you would normally get. The hot and spicy beef had a tomato type sauce and was not spicy. The spicy hunan beef had a loose overly watery sauce again not spicy. The lo mein had almost no sauce therefore flavor to it. The teriyaki chicken app was just grilled chicken no teriyaki on it. The beef and broccoli was good sauce was a little loose but still good. The sweet and sour chicken had alot of batter but was ok for the kids since they were basically chicken nuggets. The egg rolls were hard like they weren't cooked properly or the dough was too thick. The veg rolls were ok not alot of flavor. We got a couple other things too but honestly it just wasn't worth it.

Greatly Improved. I hadn't gone here in years because food had gotten so bad after first owner. But I am glad to say after trying it again yesterday I will Be Back. I enjoy cheese fried wonton they were very tender lite and crisp allot of filling. The steam dumplings was also thin wrapping letting you taste the filling the way I prefer them. Chicken Egg Foo Young was large patties, nice flavored, tender, good brown sauce little goes along way, Also white rice was done well and sticky like it should be. My Mr liked the General Tso's but I think too bready and meat chunk need to be bigger. I didn't like the reg. egg rolls was surprised they were tough and no flavor after the thinness of the fried wonton and dumplings. I will continue to try different things here and Happy they have improved.

So far the best Chinese food that we have found in the county. Great food , good portion at a fair price. What more could you ask for?

Chang Tai. We have been eating there for years now. LOVE the food (it's unlike any other Chinese place in the area -- the food has almost a grilled like flavor) and the owners are the NICEST people!!
