The food was delicious and the atmosphere was wonderful. The waiter was very educated on the menu and even the specials. It is a tiny place so I would recommend reservations if you can. There is a possibility you might get in but if you are looking to try some of the best food in Custer I’d suggest calling ahead. The owners are very considerate and understanding.
Amazing food as always. Best place in South Dakota by far. Fresh food and the best people. So happy there is a place to eat that always feels like a special occasion in a small town. Big city food, small town hospitality.

As you walk through the door of this wonderful and unique new restaurant in Custer.. you are initially bombarded with the aroma of tastes yet to come.. as we took our seats at the chef's table we were able to watch the symphony of Chef Joseph and his associates performing magic in his kitchen.. every plate that was prepared was done with love and appreciation for each ingredient that was placed on the plate.. being able to watch the devotion that each person had to this restaurant and to their customers was a treat for all the senses the smell.. the taste.. the visual beauty of each plate that left Joseph's kitchen revolved around the experience of the individual dinner and the attention to every detail including how every plate was prepared to hand polishing the silver and the glassware to the immaculate kitchen... you may walk in as a customer but you leave as an old treasured friend.. this may have been my first experience but not my last as I could not wait until the next day to enjoy breakfast... this wonderful and unique restaurant will draw you in and bring you back as you feel you were dining with family...
We are always in awe! Undoubtably the best food in the Hills! Always new features and they go out of their way to ensure you get what you love! We highly recommend them and take all of our out of town guests to enjoy as well. Outstanding food, excellent service, and nice small town atmosphere.

A must!!! We rate 9 out if 5 the food is off the chart. Staff is friendly and informative. Atmosphere is pristine and quaint. Owners are warm and exceptionally talented. Custer is lucky to have this gem.
Had breakfast here a few hours ago and I’ve gotta say that it was the first time in a long time I’ve felt right at home! The staff were very friendly and welcoming! The food was on point! Chicken and pancakes with biscuits and gravy were fuego!! So delicious!! LOVE the name of the restaurant as well!!
If I could give this unique restaurant more stars, I would! I was in Custer for a long weekend from South Carolina. To be fair, I am a self professed "food snob". I enjoy great food and don't mind paying for it. That being said....I went to Skogen based on their innovative menu---I was not disappointed!! I had breakfast there two days during my stay! The staff is AMAZING!!! Very personable, informative and efficient!! Now the food!! It is exceptional!! First day I had the walleye breakfast....there aren't adequate adjectives! Today, I had the eggs Benedict and was equally delighted! Wish I had more time here but Skogen is a gem in Custer!!!
I'm torn. Feeling as if I shouldn't tell anyone about this place. It quite possibly could be better kept a secret. You will be astonished at the quality and skill put into your meal if you make the trip to Skogen Kitchen. Custer is blessed to have this place.
Best food and service we had during our visit to the black hills- or anywhere else for that matter! We went back several times and tried almost everything on the menu- all of it fantastic and impressive.
Stopped in for dinner. Excellence andpresentation at its best, not to mention the food is fantastic! Put full review on trip advisor, a must stop and a fantastic addition for Custer.
We went there yesterday for our anniversary (breakfast and dinner) and it was some of the most amazing food we have ever had! My husband had the Suckling Pig, and I had the Ribeye. Beautiful presentation and so delicious! And the people there are so nice and friendly! We will definitely be going there again soon!!!
Great experience. Get the Moroccan chicken chicken. Sit by the cooks counter - super fun! A true treat.
Bravo! What a symphony of flavors in our mouths -- layered with just the right amount of high notes and full resonating flavors! Some of the best meals we've ever had. We found Skogen Kitchen on Yelp after touring Crazy Horse Monument. We were greeted by the owner, Eliza, who was warm and very lovely. She was able to accommodate us quickly at their last table (reservations are highly recommended as there is limited seating). The atmosphere was very clean, contemporary with attractive decor. We started our meal with the salad and oysters. My husband had the duck and I had the pork shank. We were so impressed that we returned the following evening - enjoying their seasonal menu change. We started with the asparagus soup, and for the main course we had rabbit and the filet. The featured main course items were outstanding, but the artistry of the accompanied vegetables and sauces created flavors to unmatched perfection -- Joseph knows what he's doing. Wish we had room for dessert! Too bad we live in Ohio, as we would become regulars. The entire staff went above and beyond to cater to the patrons. There was a sense of community as you recognized the regulars by the conversations with the staff. You could tell they all enjoyed working there by the constant smiles on their faces. Bravo, Joseph and Eliza! Wishing you much more success!
Stumbled upon online by complete accident and knew I had to visit when in Custer. We were able to get a reservation somewhat easily the day before in March, but I would imagine it could be a different story in the busy season. The completely unassuming exterior is somewhat responded to by the cozy yet convivial atmosphere inside. We were greeted immediately by a bright and friendly hostess who, along with our wonderful waiter, provided exceptional service throughout the experience. The food is absolutely amazing, and is likely the best in the state of South Dakota. There is a really unique blend of Scandinavian, French, and (I think) local influences which was both invigorating and divine. It’s been about two weeks since I ate here and I cannot stop thinking about it, a hallmark of a superb restaurant for me. I cannot wait to return! I hope they consider offering a tasting menu as I wished I could have tried more!
I was leaving my vacation at Yellowstone and stumbled on the restaurant. OMG, I am so happy to dine where the executive chef table side shaves white/ brown truffles on any dish. This cozy restaurant was comfortable but upscale. Everything was in small portion but fulling. Each plate was plated with such a delicate touch. It was such a romantic date.
Came here for the first time last year for my Girlfriends Birthday, and we were both thoroughly impressed. We even made some great friends, (thank you Gloria and Frank). So much so, that for my birthday this year all I wanted to do was come back to Skogen. This year we invited a group of friends to join us, 7 people, no additional wait time, never had to ask for a refill, the service was quite incredible and the server was very knowledgeable about what food was available, what went into each dish, and a great wine pairing suggestion. The food was wonderful, we all shared a few different appetizers and ordered various entrees. I can say with certainty that everyone loved their meals, as well as the service. The chef even tried some Salsa Macha my girlfriend brought with, and it was quite fun to see him interact with her about that. Will definitely be back, hopefully before next year. (its about a 6 hour drive from where I live but absolutely worth it)
I literally cannot recommend this restaurant enough!! It is by far the best overall restaurant experience I have had and I've been to some really nice restaurants. My husband and I are foodies and were struggling to find a place we love since moving to the Black Hills area, but THIS IS IT. The food is something you would expect at an trendy restaurant in a city like NYC or Denver. From first glance it's like you're walking into a breakfast diner, there are 7 tables, 3 window seats, and two seats at the counter looking into the kitche . Once you are in and seated it feels really cozy, you can see into the kitchen and all the wonderful smells surround you. The staff are so friendly in a genuine way, and the best part is they in no way make you feel rushed. You have plenty of time to eat your appetizers and let them settle before your main course comes, not many places these days allow you to do that. We spent a full two hours seated and it was delightful. On to the food, I'm pretty sure you could order anything here and it would be phenomenal but we ordered the asparagus & burrata as well as the prosciutto de Parma for our appetizers and they were both delicious. For our main course we had the Lobster Cavatelli and the Rib Eye and the whole time we were eating all I could think was that I'd never be satisfied with dinner at another restaurant again! It was my birthday so we went all out and also each got a dessert. We did the butter cake as well as the chocolate camp fire and they were both equally delightful with impressive presentations. Honestly, I don't think I've ever written a review this long, but I can't stress enough how much you need to try this place if you are into food! As icing on the cake one of the owners (Eliza, the Chef's wife) came over and chatted with us and she was an absolute sweetheart. If you have the opportunity to snag a reservation here don't pass it by!
Food was amazing and the staff were great. Really impressed with quick responses I got when inquiring about a reservation. Whole family loved it. Chris was a great waiter!!!
We had dinner at @skogenkitchen on Saturday, (October 9) night and the food was great. The servers were very nice and when we arrived mentioned that if we had covid concerns they did have outdoor seating and blankets and heaters, but as it was 43 outside and not quite dressed for the weather, we opted for inside. The servers were very nice, helped us pick our wine and checked in on us. The food- I will dream about those buns for a long time and my duck was superb. My husband (who is not a dessert person) loved his salted caramel pudding. Definitely check it out if you get a chance.
To Chef Joseph, and Eliza. You guys are amazing, but your food is way better! Thank you for the experience and the salivating dishes you create. Now you know, you must go.
