Dined at the Back 40 on Sat evening June 9, 2018 and had an excellent meal. We left stuffed from eating too much. My son blames it on the friendly carver lady, "Have you tried these? How about this?", but I know it was our own fault. :)
Our server's name was Ashley & she did a magnificent job. Friendly & attentive, yet not hovering constantly over us. (Thank you, Ashley!)
I could have easily had my fill with just the salad bar and soup table, so many great choices on each! I highly, highly recommend the Back 40's signature Celery Seed Sweet 'n Sour dressing-they've had this for many a year and you will not find a better salad dressing anywhere on earth! I do wish there were red eggs available and miss the cherry peppers and the big kettle of garlic toast at the end of the salad bar (real simple recipe garlic toast (white bread buttered with garlic butter toasted in the oven)...so Easy but SO GOOD with salad! Also miss the Swedish Meatballs & the Back 40 famous cinnamon bread on the soup table. (Back 40 probably hears this all the time as those 2 things were big favorites!) The cinnamon rolls offered were very good, but not quite AS good.
Main course I didn't try too much because I wanted to have room for those things I was really wanting from there, prime rib & shrimp. Both were excellent...the prime rib was Rare/Med Rare=perfect for me! Also had mashed potatoes which tasted homemade with the brown gravy. Yum!
My son skipped the salad bar/soup tables entirely and just had three (yes! 3!! :o) plates from main course. He loved the brisket, prime rib, roastbeef, mashed & gravy, pulled pork...plus whatever else he had. LOL
Dessert. Son skipped dessert and I would have too but I can never, ever leave the Back 40 without a scoop (or 2) of it's infamous Peppermint ice cream. I know they had Nafziger's brand ice cream out of Archbold, Ohio 40 years ago and I believe by the taste that's what it still is.You RARELY find Nafziger's...have a taste delight while you can!
I recommend the Back 40 1000% percent whenever you are hungering for a Real Meal! Everything is delicious, the atmosphere is out of this world and they hire the greatest servers & employees (super friendly, helpful & attentive service!) Hungry yet? Why not go today?!
This restaurant is just fabulous. Such a great place to eat at a buffet. This is the first for us eating here and it was just an amazing place to relax and eat with family. Service was excellent! We loved it. They even sell Back 40 t-shirts! We will certainly return to this place. Thank u for a fantastic lunch!
This is the third time there in last couple years. Last two times have been on Fridays for all you can crab legs....
Very satisfied, crab legs, prime rib, chicken, fish and shrimp...
Just what I sampled and more to choose from...
Sugar cream pie and small bowl of ice cream...
Everything was delicious, waitress was always close by and very attentive. ..
Can't wait to try again...

We discovered the Back 40 a few years ago while traveling to Amish country.. we pulled in the first restaurant and to our surprise got a succulent meal... we then made a point on the way back to eat there... we’re from Dayton Oh... so at least 3 or more times a year we make it to your restaurant ... we also discovered the crab legs on Fri... so enjoyed my birthday dinner there last night yum... but I can’t pass that prime rib up ever!!!! If you have time would be happy to tell you of the crab leg dinner close to us.... 5 minutes away but no deal and then we had to pay for parking... we’d rather travel 2 hours away ... free parking ha the name of the restaurant is Basils don’t go there 😄
Saturday night 04/14/2018 Loved loved loved it! We have been there several times from Ohio. Our server Allison was wonderful! My grandson and his wife really enjoyed everything. So many choices. We ate and talked and ate some more. Same with dessert. They loved the s’mores ice cream. I love the sugar cream pie and bread pudding. We will definitely be back. Thanks Back 40 Junction !
We had a great waitress, the food was hot and fresh and delicious. Everyone, even up to and including the lady we paid our bill to was so nice. The meat cutter was so nice. VERY nice restaurant to visit. PS great place to take pictures also, good lighting. LOL
Went from ohio to Back 40 junction in Decatur today. Jodi was our waitress and was very wonderful and helpful to us. Food was excellent. They need a place where you can take a nap after eating the wonderful food. Again I want to thank our waitress Jodi for a job very well done. My boyfriends comment on Jodi "That's a professional waitress". Will definitely be there again in the near future
Great food. The buffet had a large selection of meats. Nice carving station. Friday's they have all you can eat crab 🦀 legs.
My husband and I visited for the first time in a long time. The buffet was great! The atmosphere was lovely. Everyone was dressed in Disney attire. It was just before Christmas and it was so festive. The staff was very kind and really made us feel well and at home there. The food was hot and very tasty. We loved the prime rib and the meatloaf! And the bread pudding and the sauce options to put on it!
We were greeted by not one, not two, but three smiles from the hostesses at the door. Seated in Betty's section and waited on with more smiles and great suggestions for our choices. Fascinating decór, to keep you looking for the hidden surprises. Dinner was delicious, dessert so yummy! Do go visit sometime!
Weird and unique place. 1 price per person (NOT buffet). You get 2 (meat) entrees, 3 sides, and a dessert. Can easily be shared by 2 people! Food was awesome. Will be going back, even with it being over an hour away!
We are new to the area and they came highly recommended. Last minute plans on Valentines gave us the opportunity to give this place a try. They did NOT disappoint. We were actually close to their closing time and they welcomed us and did NOT rush us in any way, actually they were very social able. Needless to say, the Food and Service were GREAT!!! We can't wait to go back.
My husband doesn't like to go out much and this is one of the only places he will go. We drive an hour+ to eat here. The whole family is able to find food they like. They have salad, cheese, pickles, and bread, and our favorite is the hot section with all the meats and potatoes prepared homestyle. Definitely try a little of all the meats to find your fave. The desserts are fantastic also. There are several pie choices including sour pit cherry. I really like the bread pudding. I'm normally not into it, but theirs is amazing and they have a couple of sauces to drizzle on that are just crazy good. They didn't have crab legs the last time we were there on a Friday, but that's not enough to keep us away.
Celebrated there for my birthday! The selections are amazing! Everything fresh and delicious!!! Only downfall I'd say is a table for 4 is not big enough for 4 people, drinks and plates plus adding crab legs makes for a cramped space. Very friendly and great service!!
