Not the complete Greek experience. I tried the Petra Café at Poplar and Kirby. It’s decent enough. But the ambiance—rather lack of it—is ill-suited for the upscale clientele that surrounds Petra. Even worse, the restaurant does not feel Greek. Overall, Petra looks and feels like a cheap deli. Boring and cheap. The outdoor seating area is merely the sidewalk next to a parking space. I was also disappointed with the irregular (and constantly changing) hours as well.
The food tasted authentic and fresh. But the main course was not heated completely thru. Inexcusable since there were only 2 other patrons in the dining room and 3 chefs in the kitchen. Food should never be sent out cold. Despite the oversight, the waitress was quick to remedy the situation even bringing out new utensils.
Despite its shortcomings, I will try Petra again if only because I enjoy Greek cuisine. But it isn’t a place I would ever bring clients. Dull finishings and merely OK service aren’t enough to offset the surprisingly delicious food. Petra is a place where diners go to eat Greek food, not experience Greek food. And that difference can seal the fate of this restaurant.
Attentive staff. Plenty of good food for our dinner. Chef knew what was in the food-husband with food allergies. 93 degrees outside at 7 PM-AC works fine! Paper tablecloths on cloth fine with me.
Authentic Greek and great environment. This is a great restaurant to try Greek cuisine. They put a lot of lamb on their sandwiches. I definitely recommend this restaurant.
Paninis are always good but the bread isn't soft...if you're looking for softer bread I'd go with a pita sandwich...try the spicy feta dip, it's awesome
Wonderful. Great food, great staff and great price. Love the 10% discount they give for paying with cash!
Great Food!. I have eaten at the Petra Cafe a couple times and the food is always excellent. Love the lamb and the hummus is fantastic. The only thing Petra needs to do is improve their service. They are always understaffed. However, once you get the food you forget the service, and once we had the food the drinks stayed full. Also, you can bring a bottle of wine in and they will provide the glasses. That's nice. I really like Petra Cafe. I will make it a regular stop.
Great food!. I love this place! Their hummus is to die for, and I love their philly subs! Their spanakopita is also awesome. I haven't had anything bad there!
The service is great - they're often really busy and there's generally only two servers there. They do a great job and they are so friendly and personable! They remember me when I come back, and that's always a nice feeling!
Been here before a few times and also the now closed location in Collierville. Petra Cafe, for some odd reason, always seems to be understaffed in the server dept. At rush times, you may be waiting a bit. As for the servers themselves, they've always been as attentive as possible under the circumstances. Food is always extraordinary--I haven't had a menu item yet that didn't "wow" me.
Great Lunch Spot. Some of us from work go to lunch there a lot. Any of the panini sandwiches are great and their hummus and pita bread is absolutely amazing. The sandwiches are huge and you can usually save half for later. They also make their baklava daily and it is delicious! The only bad thing about this place is the fact that it's small and crowded and usually only has two waitresses. The service can get kind of bad if you go right at noon.
Arguably the best gyro in Memphis. Authentic sliced off the rotating spit gyro meat that is hot and delicious.
Best Greek Salad with grilled chicken. Local produce. Chicken marinated in their own sauce. Worth the visit!
One of my favorite place for lunch. Excellent gyros, paninis and salads. Always fresh and full of savor. Prompt and good service from the owner and other ladies helping.
Great place. Always fresh food and more. Now they also have awesome homemade pizza with perfect crust. Nice family Cafe))
All the Greek staples are represented here and done so with great presentation, flavor and competence. I have had the gyro, the spicy feta dip, tabbouleh, spanikopita, dolmades, and the chicken souvlaki and all were delicious. I go there almost exclusively for lunch, and it's always clean and full of people -- a good sign of a quality restaurant.
If you like good Greek/Mediterranean food, this is probably the closest there is to a sure thing in Memphis.
