We came in Wednesday April 18th to celebrate our friend becoming a US citizen.
To address the staff: you are all amazing! Thank you for such a great night and on point service! You were are incredibly attentive and detailed oriented. We always had full drinks, clean table and quick service. Not only this but each staff member seemed to have a great deal of knowledge on the menu, ingredients and overall joy for what they do.
During our dinner, the head chef and owner came to our table to talk with us. It was clear how passionate they are in what they do. We were given dessert on the house to celebrate our friend’s citizenship. Not just one dessert but we got to try all the desserts they offer. Holy cow, the dessert alone was a treat!!! They truly went above and beyond to make our friend’s big day special.
Thank you!!
Excellent food and cocktails in a fun environment. I really appreciated that the food had interesting, new flavor combinations that I haven’t had in Grand Rapids before. I highly recommend checking this place out.
The food was outstanding! Unique and full of flavor. The management and staff were well informed and always available. Excellent service. I will definitely return.
Amazing food. Great Atmosphere. Knowledgeable staff. If your into Tequila this is the place for you. Make no mistake if you want a "burrito supreme" you are probably barking up the wrong tree. But if you want to treat your pallet to something really amazing, this is the place !!
This is an exciting new restaurant in Grand Rapids! Do not look for the typical fare, Mexo goes beyond your expectations. Indulge in excellent appetizers, tasty dinners made with a “Mexo” twist and an extensive tequila menu!
The atmosphere is high energy with an educated staff. The original, preserved interior of the building, adds to the restaurants character. You don’t want to miss this experience!
This location is convenient, accessible, light and airy.
Not hoity toity like Luna - however, it puts Luna's cocktails and food to shame.
The service was outstanding.
The menu Fun!
The food - impeccably excellent!
Hands down the most amazing service I've ever received at a restaurant. Not just my server but anyone who walked by my table and saw that I was low on water or eating stopped to ask if I needed a refill or how I liked the food. I wasn't sure what to expect from "prehispanic modern Mexican" but I wasn't disappointed. Everything was so flavorful and my server was very knowledgeable.
Amazing place, amazing food and service. Every part of that restaurant and every piece in there has a true story behind it. Please give this place a try as you won’t go wrong it.
I was impressed with the service, and the food was amazing. We sat out on the patio and it was refreshing and enjoyable.
Outstanding! I was so impressed with how fine-tuned the flavor profiles were. Wonderful service. Wonderful drinks.
Unbelievable new restaurant and tequila - mezcal bar in downtown GR!
Chef Oscar and his team have an amazing menu and presentation. The tortilla soup, guacamole, zucchini salad, torta, and tostadas were amazing. I’m going back for cocktail hour where I can enjoy a few of the tequilas from their extensive tequila menu. Don Julio 1942 - save a seat at the bar for me.
Where do I start with our amazing experience? The environment is welcoming and relaxing. For an upscale menu, you can walk in nice and casual and feel comfortable while fitting in. The menu starting with the appetizers, to the main courses and ending with desserts is unlike anywhere else in West Michigan and fills a void others will soon realize needed to be filled. Chef Oscar came out to talk with out table and his explanations of the menu items, the ingredients which some our home grown in the basement and the details into all of the items that are made in house (which is almost all of them) was amazing. Reading prior reviews made me feel like I was going to regret our visit and be underwhelmed. I’m glad to say that out table of 4 will be going back and taking more people with us in the future. The pricing is not an issue once you learn what it actually takes to prepare and serve the menu they created. There is no other Mexican style restaurant to compare this too and this is high end restaurant that delivers on every level. Thank you for making out dinner a very memorable experience and be assured we’ll be back with more friends.
Great food. Opening was tonight. Would recommend
I can't believe I hadn't discovered this hidden gem earlier! The cuisine is truly exceptional, and the overall dining experience is nothing short of outstanding. Despite an unconventional dining encounter, it remained enjoyable and personable.
During our visit, a severe storm with a tornado warning prompted the restaurant to direct us to their basement for safety. It was during this time that we learned about their intriguing "Chef's Table" event, held on the first Fridays of each month. We've already marked our calendars for the next available Friday, as we're eager to attend.
The food at this establishment is a delightful fusion of traditional and contemporary Mexican flavors, resulting in an incredibly flavorful dining experience. We're eagerly anticipating our return visit.
This is a very exceptional restaurant, their Mexican food is not like a regular Mexican restaurant’s, each dish has its own unique flavors, you can tell the chef puts a lot of effort into making every of them, I really enjoyed their Falda dishes especially. Our waitress was super nice and friendly as well, it was an excellent dining experience in a nutshell.
Atmosphere was simply beautiful. I didn’t eat the food but had drinks. Drinks were good depending on choice but the atmosphere was great and I loved and appreciate the recognition of the Afro-Mexican and Indigenous anchors of Mexican culture.
The food at Mexo is truly exceptional! I shared the Carne Asada A La Tampiquena 1939 before attending a play at the Civic.
The world needs more Mexican fine dining restaurants where the food is creative and unique. If the extent of your experience with Mexican food includes complimentary chips and salsa, go to Mexo. Chef Moreno will show you just how serious Mexican food really is.
This restaurant is really one of the best of the best. Being Mexican-American, myself, it's very thrilling to see such familiar flavors and dishes presented with very clear care and super unique and new ideas and combinations. Everything from the service, the atmosphere, and to the real star, the food. I can think of no where else in the area where you can not only find a molé and a traditional caldo de piedra (stone soup) in the same place, but two dishes with such full and complex levels of flavor as these two. Wildly flavorful and conceptually creative, I'm blown away by the uniqueness of the menu as a whole and can't rave about the food itself enough. Some really great tequila and mezcal drinks compliment the menu greatly as well. 10/10 would happily dine again.
Let me preference this review by saying we are vegans and I bet the experience of non-vegans is 1000% better. Their chef seems amazing and the plating of food was gorgeous!
We tried the Vegan Cuitlacoche Sopes, Salsa Duo, Vegan Enchiladas Verdes, and the Mushroom Tacos (unsure if these are vegan). Everything was good but we have much more developed and complex flavors from Mexican vegan food in other cities. The salas and enchiladas were our favorite thing we tried. Putting salas on everything helped but it was underwhelming for vegan food. I wanted to love it but it was just okay flavor wise.
Truly a wonderful culinary experience. Chef Oscar is a magician. You can really taste the quality, heritage and thoughtfulness that goes into his menu. My biggest fear going out to eat is overpaying for subpar food which happens all too often. Finally a place with integrity, inventiveness and wholesome ingredients. Although the foods the real MVP here, the atmosphere definitely matches it.
They source good local ingredients and even grow a lot of their own ingredients in a greenhouse connected to the restaurant which is super cool. Also proud of them for “nixtamalizing” the corn they use for recipes, a process you don’t hear about much anymore in the U.S.
I could go on and on.. the mole bites are a must and the Cuitlacoche tamals I couldn’t get enough of. Then the churros came in for the mic drop 🤌🏼
What an amazing experience! The service staff was extraordinary from the time we walked through the door until the time we left. The authenticity of the food was amazing. You can tell with each dish that the chef loves what he prepares and puts his heart and soul into every dish. I haven't been able to go to a Mexican restaurant because they were not able to navigate around my husband's food allergies but that was not the case here. If you are able to, this is a "must try" restaurant that will take you to old Mexico through every bite you take.
We had immediate seating on a Sunday morning for brunch. Our waitress was really friendly and explained the menu, answered questions and gave recommendations! I got the Huevos Rancheros with cafe olla and my sister got the puff pastries with guava and cream cheese filling. The coffee was French press with ground spices and quite strong! The Huevos Rancheros, well just know their sauces are spicy! I personally enjoyed it however I know others in my family would find it too hot for them.
They have a great atmosphere and the staff has great customer service. Definitely recommend!
The chef is Paris trained.. Each dish is a created by the chef by blending Mexican American cuisine. Be prepared to experience visual presentation then blown away with each dish ordered. Do not expect the Guacamole to be anything that you have previously experienced.
Perfection!!!!!
