Amazing, 50’s diner with the best food. It’s like the history of Hattiesburg in one small building. The pictures & artifacts alone would make it worth a visit but the food keeps you coming back. Their Open Faced Steak sandwich is to die for. Also, the curly Q fries are a Hattiesburg specialty. I went thru a period my freshman year in college where I literally would place a call in order for one daily. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out where I got my freshman 15! .
Had lunch there yesterday food was great and service was great
Love this place! My 6 year old son visited for the first time today and said it was “the best food ever.”
Great diner where all the food is good!
I did not know they were cooking chicken and dumplings and had something else.
Billy has taken his ancestors diner and kept is going with style!
The service is great and the food that Misty cook on the grill or what Billy cooks in the back is excellent!
The food and service are still great; the only thing missing was Billy.
The food is great ,the prices are excellent. The owner seems good but the two servers are racist as hell. I'm at the table with 3 others that happens to be white. Not once did she ask me did I want a refill. I've been several times and my order is always taken last no matter where I sit. I even asked for a refill once and she never came back to do it.
This is not your place if you are a snob. This is greasy, good, and a tradition. It is what it is, and it is pretty darn good at it, and good.
Haters, go away.
Great fries and grilled cheese. Great little diner.
A Hattiesburg Landmark. My first memories of Coney Island are from more than 30 years ago when my dad used to take me there for Cheese Dogs. Open in the same location since 1926, Coney Island in Hattiesburg is much more than a diner or sandwich shop, it's an institution. There used to be half a dozen or more of these places in downtown Hattiesburg. Most made it to the 70's or 80's then faded away. But, Coney Island is still here and has changed very little in the last 30 years and I imagine very little in the last 70 years.
Today for I had two cheese dogs, and an order of their hand cut curly fries. A cheese dog is a hotdog with chilli, chese, raw onions, mustard and pickles. They were as good as ever and the staff was great. The fries were crisp and not too greasy and the memories flooded back from a time gone by....in many ways a trip to Coney Island is a trip back in time.
Oh my- where do I start!! I have been going here since I was a baby!! The food is so simple but it is sooooo tasty!!! They have the best lunch specials! My favorite items on the menu are the open faced roast beef, ham poboy and chili burgers! All these come with awesome curly fries. Most people have never been here- try it! It will take you back in time:)
AMAZING. I heard about this place from a friend of mine, and had never been inside before although I have seen it. I figured I would stop in for lunch last week, and it was amazing to say the least. I was greeted at the door as I walked in and was quickly seated (and it was very busy). I ordered their famous open faced steak, and after every bite I could not wait for the next. The service was very good and the people working in there was very friendly. Even the owner of the place walked by my table to make sure everything was as i wished. I could not have had a better lunch. 5 stars of food and service, and I would suggest this place to ANYONE and EVERYONE in the hattiesburg area!!!!!!!!!!
Great food/price/atmosphere. I love going to Coney Island Cafe for lunch. Located in historic Downtown Hattiesburg, this is a great place to grab a burger or a blue plate special.
Really great food! The buttered pecan cake is great!
Delicious special Shepard's pie and a chocolate cake make sure you bring cash.
Best place to eat in Hattiesburg. Friendly, down to earth people, serving delicious, affordable food.
Definitely one of Hub city's oldest and best dinners!! Best food in town!
Super nice people. Good home cooking
Loved the chili cheese burger and fresh cut curly fries!
Food was great, good ole home cooked style hamburgers, the service on the other hand kinda ruined the experience for us,she just had a "I don't want to be here attitude " and her service reflected that.
Ive spent enough time in Michigan to equate the term "coney" with what the rest of the country would call a chili dog. I went in hoping for something tubular covered in chili and if I was lucky some cheese as well. Well, Coney Island Cafe did not have chili dogs.
What I was greeted with when entering was a real honest to goodness greasy spoon. The type my grandfather would take me to for lunch when I was a child 40+ years ago. Of course I sat at the counter. As I stated above, no chili dogs were to be had but they did have hot dogs, burgers, bbq sandwiches, and fried chicken. The prices were great. I got a cheeseburger that was plenty fine. It rivaled what you could make at home. I noticed plate after plate of fried chicken kept coming by so I'm guessing their fried chicken is the thing to get.
I'll be back to try the fried chicken because this place ticks all the right buttons. Good food, good prices, and though it isn't exactly like the burger joint my grandpa would take me to, it's close enough to it in spirit that it ticks the nostalgia button as well just get there for lunch because they close at 2 in the afternoon.
