The chicken salad plate is what I order at purple onion if I am eating there. The only thing that I do not like is the strong smell inside the restaurant so if the weather is not pleasant to sit outside, I will have to take the food to go.

This is one of my favorite Purple Onion locations. I always get the Gyro plate, and it is excellent. The lamb is sliced thicker and seasoned better than at similar restaurants around town. The vegetables are also fresher. Staff is always friendly.
Surprise. I dont like this kind of food but had to go there so i tried the terayaki wing and fries and they were fantastic!!!
Where have you been all my life?. The Purple Onion was a pleasant surprise for me. I live near this location and pass it every time I go to the Publix, but had never been in. It took an experienced friend, a Birmingham native, to introduce me to what I thought Al’s would be. Of course, there is no comparison. I believe I ordered the Falafel Pronto with fries, which was delightful. But this is a 24 hr. greasy spoon kind of place with a huge menu that all looks good and stomach cramp inducing, in the best way possible. I have only dipped my toe into the ocean that is The Purple Onion. So glad to know it’s there when I need it. By far the best, local fast food I’ve had.
Love this place. I swear Purple Onion is one of the best restaurants in Birmingham. I've been going to Purple Onion since 1997. The food is good every single time I go. The Homewood location is the best location. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My favorite is anything with the grilled chicken. It is seasoned so well. The tabouleh is delicious. Even the fries taste good. Love the roll ups. Fast good service and the best food ever.
The best 24 hour spot there is
Gyros!. Purple Onion is my go to spot when I get a craving for a gyro. Their homemade gyro sauce is awesome and the service is always quick and courteous. Oh, and they're open 24/7, which you don't find too often in Birmingham unless you count Waffle House. I eat here on a regular basis.
Good customer service. Great food. No need to add salt or pepper. The food is seasoned beautifully and the portions are generous. Just typing about it makes me wanna put in an order for the grouper platter with tabouli.
Nice take on middle eastern cuisine. On my first visit to the Onion I had the gyro plate and it was delicious. It consisted of a side of fruit (pineapple and orange slices); hummus with pita bread; a small side salad (garnished with a ring of purple onion) and a substantial pile of slices of nicely seasoned gyro meat on a bed of wild rice. With a bottle of water it was about $12. Everything was very tasty and fresh. The menu also includes burgers, baked potatoes and standard non-greek type sandwiches, so there's something for everyone. Service was fast and friendly. A great little spot!
Consistent when the real manager is there.. This is the spot I go to for Gyros. They actually put a decent amount of meat in your Gyros when the manager is there. They get a little stingy late night with the meat and when you by a wrap it may look the size of a breakfast burrito you get at a gas station. But they are consistent and the food overall is good. I come here frequent like 4-5 times a month. I would recommend this location over the others. Southside is THE WORST, drive to this location instead or worst come to worst, go to AL's!

Always Consistent and Enjoyable. Yes the parking is bad, yes the inside is too cramped, and yes the outside is too dependent on the weather, but the food is great. The last time I was there I ordered the Greek salad with gyro meat. This is a great option if you want to sample the gyro, but are trying for a healthier option. The hummus is some of the best I have ever had. While some other locations and other restaurants have better dining facilities and don't require you to circle the block three or four times for a parking space, they also don't result in the satisfaction you get from consistently good food.
Yummy and fulfilling. Always a hit. The salads and hummus are delicious for a healthy meal, and the burgers and gyros are delightful for a hearty and filling choice. A Birmingham staple with good reason.
