The place is always clean when I have been and the food is usually good. The food is lacking though. It has that chain restaurant-ness to it and has lost its uniqueness over the years. It is a little pricey for the quality of food that you recieve. The staff is usually pretty nice, but I have had experiences before
Frankly, if you live on the 65 Corredor and Hoover Pelham area there just aren't that many great dining options in the fine dining area. There are some great restaurants but no Gems. I've been going to j alexander's
For a number of years for lunch and dinner.
From the outside it has the appearance of a chain which it is but they do do it right.
I've enjoyed their salads, appetizers, steaks, chicken dishes… It is a very consistent place, not expensive not cheap mid range to food pricing. They really do it right here as far as quality of food and service.
I've always been impressed with the consistency of the food… And I also have a really nice bar if you just want to have a drink and an appetizer.
I highly recommend this place.
Consistently excellent!
Prices are a little over the top for a chain restaurant, even a nice one, but food and service is so good that is a minor concern
Good food, as always. Love the classy, jazzy ambience. Get the carrot cake! It's warm and buttery, the best I've ever had. My veggie burger was average for J. Alexander's. It's usually really good at other locations. My partner's steak sandwich was excellent.
This is really nice place around Riverchase galleria. The restaurant is big and the decor is nice. The steak there was very good. Good place for a date night.
Went for dinner tonight. For an appetizer I got the Mexico City spinach con queso. It was amazing. I then got a Redlands salad and the crispy chicken. The salad is amazing and one of my favorites. I have never seen so many chicken fingers in my life. However, they were very good. I got the French fires and Mac and cheese too. Both were amazing too!
I really enjoyed the intimate feel of the restaurant and the food was delicious. To start, I had the potato soup. I wish could have had another bowl. It was very smooth and tasteful. The salmon was great and the mac and cheese was sinful. So much for trying to be healthy. Overall great experience.
This is the place for a beef feast. The burgers for lunch are perfection and I recommend either the mac & cheese or fries - both are decadent. My only complaint is the booths have a very awkward post that make it difficult to enjoy the fine food. Ask for a table, not a booth.
During the past two years I have visited JA's approximately 10 times both on business and with my loved one's. This is one of the most consistent restaurants in Birmingham. Their food is delicious and when I had an issue arise once and they remedied the situation. Their combination of superb salads and delicious entrees will win you over. This restaurant is not cheap, but warrants at least quarterly visit.
My husband and I just finished our meal of steak and prime rib and commented on how consistent they always are. We got exactly what we were graving with great service that is friendly and fast while still being conscious of not "smothering" you. We have had nothing but good experiences in over 10 years of coming here! And we will continue to make this one of top date night places!
Best Food In Alabama. I am so glad we found this place being new to the city! The wait staff is amazing and the food is unbelievable! It is now our favorite spot and go there several times a month. A must go to location!
Good food but expensive. Had dinner there with my family and ordered steak for dinner. ordered grilled scottish salmon, steak maui and fillet mignon.
expensive for the meal we had and the ambiance is too dark
take more than 30 minutes for the order to arrive but over all its a nice place.
Excellent food and service. Grilled artichoke is to die for. NY steak is huge and cooked to perfection. Mac and cheese creamy and delicious. The Thai pork tenderloin very taste. Two thumbs up.
Good steak and quick service. Went here for lunch with a friend. The steak I ordered was the New York Strip which came with the NYO Macaroni and Cheese. My steak was cooked just as I ordered and the butter and seasonings (rosemary maybe?) atop the steak were a great addition. The NYO (Not Your Ordinary) Macaroni and Cheese was delicious.
Delicious steaks. I had the filet with crabmeat with side of asparagus the asparagus was nicely flavored. Every one at my table was pleased
Very nice resturant with a great atmosphere. The service is wonderful! Everyone is so nice and helpful, some of the best service I've had. The food is pretty good but not worth the price in my opinion. It's good, but not tr quality I expected for the price. Instead of tasting like $$$ food it was more like $-$$ food. The croutons are magical though! I could have just ate that! The rattlesnake pasta is very yummy an spicy. I probably won't return because of the price, but it still is a good resturant. The only downside is I had to wait or over an hour to be seated, however i was with a party of 10. Smaller party may have been seated sooner! (:
Best Steak Ever?. If I told you the filet mignon was my best steak ever, you might be impressed. But actually, I'm no gourmet. So take it with a grain of salt. And a pat of butter. My wife and I really enjoyed our dining experience here. You have to try the filet. And the creme broulet is exquisite. Even my wife said so, and she's a native of New Orleans. Over the top waitstaff. We like it so much, I took my parents there, and paid the bill. I highly recommend it.
Never had a bad meal here. Had an earlydinner with a friend. Started with a cappuccino. Delicious as always. Can't pass up the salmon dip either. Ended up going for a feature today of filet Oscar style. Perfect medium rare. Seasoned right, with asparagus. Try the roasted root vegetables when they have them. Delicious. For some reason there was brocolli with them today. Was unaware broccoli was a root vegetable. But I can't complain, of course it was delicious. Can't say a single bad thing about J's
Thumbs Up. Prime rib was cooked nearly perfectly (medium rare) with just a very small amount of fat. Tender and very flavorful steak. Many good things to choose from on the menu. The other 3 in our party had ribs, the filet and ahi tuna salad. All enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere.
I come here at least twice a month. My husband comes here at least twice a week. Never had a bad meal here. Everything on the menu is outstanding. They have a really great staff too!
Reviews do not do this place justice. Positively one of the best meals ever! Steak-- delicious & perfect! Chocolate cake sent from heaven made by angels!!
Great. I usually avoid chains, but I make an exception for J Alexander's. I have never had a bad meal at this place, and the service and atmosphere are nice too. I have tried the rattlesnake pasta, fish tacos, tiger shrimp, and prime rib. The mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese, and chocolate cake are also to die for. What I also love about this place is that it has something for everyone (pasta, steak, seafood, sandwiches, tacos) and seems to do all of them well.
Great service and atmosphere, excellent food ( had seared Ahi Tuna), a true gem.
Love!. I love this place. I have been here a million times (ok- not literally), and they are consistantly one of my favorites! I know it is a chain, but the food and service are always good. It is not-so-good for large parties as most of their seating consists of nice, big, comfy, private-ish booths.
Some of my faves: spinach dip, Alex's salad add grilled chicken, Veggie burger (kind of falls apart but it is big and delicious), Cheddar bacon burger if you prefer meat, both served with a heaping mountain of mashed potatoes that are to die for or grilled zucchini if you are watching your carbs, excellent steaks, and cilantro shrimp. Good wine selection.
Only negative- they got rid of my favorite desserts called POWERFUL STUFF and it was. (Flashback for those that missed it- Piled at a minimum of six inches high and three inches wide, this SnickersTM ice cream pie rests on layers of Oreo® cookie crumbs, combined with caramel, and topped with a super rich caramel sauce and toasted pecans and slathered with whipping cream) BRING IT BACK PLEEEEEEAAAASSSSE!!!!
This is clearly the best chain restaurant in America. Some would call it pricy, I call it an excellent value. Ask for Adam.
Had a great experience last night!! Service was on point thru our entire meal, Sabrina was flawless. Being in the hospitality industry, we don't get to go out to dinner often, so it was a real treat. My prime rib was a little salty, but other than that, our evening and food was perfect. We will definitely be back!
Service is wonderful!. I recommend J Alexander's for any date night! Service is wonderful, tables are private, lighting is dim. Wonderful food, side portions and desserts are big enough to split. very romantic experience.
If I trust him to pick my drink I should trust him to know when to bring out the food. My lunch-mates and I went to J. Alexander's today. When our waiter came to take our drink orders Diner #1 said she'd have a diet coke; Diner #1 said she'd have an unsweetened tea. Our waiter turned to me but I couldn't decide. I said, "I'll have one of those, too." He said, "Which one?" I said, "either one, just pick one." He said, "You've got to tell me which one you want." Diner #1 said, "He'll never do it; you may as well pick for him, but don't worry, he'll like whatever you bring out."
He decided I wanted a diet Coke, which was fine with me. After he put the drinks down I asked him what the daily soup was. "Black bean." Ugh. I was in a soupy mood but beans have no business being the star of any soup so I ordered the chicken and pasta soup, and one of the specials--roasted root vegetables. The waiter asked if I wanted the soup to come out first, followed by the veggies. I thought about it and decided I'd feel silly sitting there eating a meal of nothing but a side dish of root vegetables. I told him to bring them all out together. "Are you sure?" he asked. I assured him I was sure. He took the other two orders (salad with chopped fried chicken fingers for Diner #1 and black bean soup and another salad for Diner #2) and was off.
Soon he was back with our food. The menu didn't tell the whole truth when it came to the soup--it wasn't Chicken and Pasta soup it was Chicken and Mushroom and Pasta soup. I managed to avoid most of the mushrooms. The soup was tricky--some of those mushroom bits were quite small--but still good. When I finished the soup I turned my attention to the roasted root vegetables--carrots, onions, broccoli, all with a nice char on them, drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Alas, after the first bite I waved our waiter over. "Can you nuke these for a minute or so?" I asked him. "They're cold." He gave me a look that clearly said, "If you had followed my advice and let me bring them out to you when you finished the soup, they would still be piping hot". I'm sure he wanted to say that out loud but instead just said, "Certainly. No problem." He brought them back a minute later and I dug in. They could have used a little more of that balsamic, but there were very tasty. Diners #2 and #3 seemed to enjoy their respective salads and the black bean soup was declared a success.
After our plates had been cleared we lingered to chit chat. Our waiter returned one last time. He asked Diner #2 if she wanted some diet Coke to go. He didn't ask me anything--just grabbed my drink glass and took off, leaving me nothing. It's my own fault. I asked him to decide what I wanted to drink and he must have decided that I no longer wanted to drink anything at all. Next time I won't be so wishy-washy.
Excellent Service, Excellent Food!. Great all-around! Crispy Chicken Platter will spoil you on chicken fingers. One of our go-to places.
Consistent. I love the Casear Salad with salmon on top and the French onion soup. Everything is priced fairly and I never have to wait on a table. Wish it was closer to work.
All time favorite. My husband and I always make an effort to choose locally owned restaurants over chains. However, we cannot stay away for J Alexander's. We have tried numerous items on the menu and have always been wowed. The desserts here are very good. I do not normally eat carrot cake, but we will sometimes go just for that. The servers are always friendly and attentive.
My favorite restaurant of all time. Smoked Salmon Dip, Prime Rib sandwich and fried, a perfect 10.
Never disappointed.... Great Service!!! This restaurant knows how to take care of customers.
Great food!
I have never been disappointed with anything from here.
I would suggest the "center cut filet" for your meal and "the very best chocolate cake" for desert!
Consistantly good. Always good, and always more food than you can eat.... The menu has a little something for everyone, and I like the fact that you can see your food being prepared. The French Dip is really good, as are the wood fired burgers! We also really like the spinach dip. A little pricey, but never had family or friends we have taken to be disappointed!
Consistent, Fulfilling, Tasty. I've eaten here many times, but never thought to review it for some reason. There are many good choices on the menu (see below) and the menu is varied periodically. I wish the Steak Brazzo was back on the menu! They replaced it with a very good filet mignon kabob.
One of their stand out side dishes is Orzo and Wild Rice. I'm trying to duplicate this at home and almost have it! Not quite... but close enough to make me happy.
The restaurant is located near the Galleria Mall on perimeter/outparcels. Lighting is purposefully dim and dining room is relatively private with their staggered table arrangements and multi-levels.
If you like a large bar, they have it. It's usually packed after work hours, but there somehow always seems to be a turn over to make room within a few minutes. And, you can order the full menu if you really don't want to sit in the dining room.
Other food items I recommend include a fantastic prime rib, pan seared scallops, pork tenderloin, crab cakes, and the warm carrot cake! Yes, I've had them all and would eat here many nights a week if the wallet could handle it.
Food was great! Try the carrot cake
Excellent service! Wonderful food and atmosphere! Great date place! I'm not snobby enough to rule out a place because it is a chain. Nothing feels chain-like to me. Had a stellar filet with bernaise sauce. Cooked perfectly and almost fork tender. Thick cut steak that puts Flemings (also a chain I might add) to shame.. Our waiter was attentive without hovering. The courses came out steadily but not in a rush. As we left, we were greeted by at least three different employees. Adding this place as a new favorite.
Ok for a chain. For a chain its not a bad place. I usually get what ever is on special and it usually pretty good. They also so a good club sandwich. Vegetarians be warned though, the have a black bean burger that is not very good, and the vegie plate is swimming in butter and chicken stock, so its not vegie friendly.
Love it!. Second time dining here and we love it. We are Brits living in Birmingham and love to eat in an establishment that will allow us the time to sit and enjoy a meal and a drink.. This restaurant does it well - staff are well trained, food is great and we value the time allowed us to sit and enjoy the ambience without feeling rushed. A lovely little cosmopolitan place in the Hoover area.
Love it!. Enjoyed it. I had the crab cakes and my husband had the tuna. Both were amazing. Loved the food and atmosphere. Will definitely revisit.
One of the best restaurants you will find anywhere. Everything is full of flavor and the portions are huge!
Great. Ive been to this place at least 5 times within the past 2 years and got something different each time. Although it can be expensive, I have been very impressed with everything me and my family has gotten - a total of at least 25 items. The waiters are easily some of the best Ive experienced in the state.
Once again expensive though - can be $20 per person
Delicious and Consistent. Every time I have visited J Alexanders, I have had good service and delicious food. There is an entree with beef medallions in a mushroom glaze with mashed potatoes that I get often, or I will get the prime rib and sometimes a French Dip or the Rattlesnake Pasta. Every time the food is served in ample portions with delicious flavor, served hot. The Powerful Stuff dessert is good but almost sicky-sweet, the caramel is overpowering on this dish. The carrot cake is excellent.
Love the Veggie Burger. I cannot speak for most of the menu as every time I go, I get a veggie burger. It is hands down the best veggie burger I've ever had. It is chock full of flavors. I know it's just a burger, but it is really amazing set of flavors. As for the deserts, the chocolate cake is amazing. I'm not normally impressed by chocolate cake, but this one is severed warm with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. It is most and gooey. The powerful stuff desert was a bust. I love caramel and thought I would like this but did not.
Love it!. I just love J Alexanders! Whenever we go visit we always go there! You just don't get any better than this!
Had a great dinner there tonight. Started off with the Mexican spinach dip, had the pomegranate martini which was great. I ate for my dinner the rattlesnake pasta , that was so delicious.
Excellent Restaurant. Great service. Great food. The salad was fresh, dressing was top quality, artichoke dip was the BEST i have ever had. The Rattlesnake Pasta was great too. Spicy & Creamy. (Like Cajun Chicken Pasta.) The drinks were on point too. I had a couple different Martinis and they were both excellent.
The food was very good. My wife ordered soup which never came. We had the prime rib which was excellent. The baked potato was good but why stand it on end so the butter and sour cream can not get to all of the potato?
My first visit. Very good experience. Our waiter was great and patiently answered all of my menu-related questions. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin-it was done perfectly! The Bang-Bang sauce that covered it was sooo tasty! They also have tart but sweet and good lemonade.
Wonderful we drive from alxander city about hour and a half drive. Service is great and the prime rib is out of this world.
...I honestly have never had a bad experience ...except on take out... the atmosphere is amazing and it's for any type of crowd... the experience is whatever you make it! The food is everything you could ask for! There are 13 states lucky enough to
