Omg I'm so full that was so delicious š¤¤ I ordered the smothered chicken plate which comes with 3 sides I got cabbage candied yams and Mac and cheese . The portions were very generous the only thing I regret getting what a piece of white meat as one of the 3 pieces, it was not anything compared to the dark meat which was juicy and full of flavor I also got the banana pudding but I wasn't a fan it was a little two watery for my liking but I would definitely eat here again and probably just get a different dessert there's so many to choose from so I do not feel like that was any points lost on their part. All in all I give them five stars because the food was very flavorful all the way through The portions were so big me and my son both at off a plate and we did not even finish it and on a big girl so I can eat lol but it is worth the eat and the prices is not bad at all

Houstonās This Is It soul food restaurant located in the shadows of Texas? Southern University is a staple of the community for more than 60 years. I must admit. Iāve been enjoying the delicious meals for 40 of those 60 years. What I can say is the quality of the food in terms of selection, seasoning, freshness, and portions havenāt changed that entire time. in recent years, they added a daiquiri machine and maybe a television but for the most part in their current location you can still select ox tails, turkey,l wings, fried fish, collards, mac & cheese, black eyed peas, etc. has maintain a level of quality for a very long time. I might add that I feel people of all ethnicities and all races could come here enjoy a meal and I feel very comfortable going in and out of the restaurant and in the restaurant itself.

The restaurant had a line which made me believe the food was great since I was visiting from AZ.
All I can say is the sides were GREAT! My smothered pork chops were formidable, like they hadn't had time two simmer in the gravy, but the flavor was good. The portion size wasn't big as I expected since the customers before me had huge portions. The lady who fixed my plate wasn't friendly; she acted like I was a problem when I greeted her. Not only didn't she reply to my hello, but she also had a mean look on her face.
Once I got to the register, the gentleman was friendly and polite. The older gentleman, who appeared to be the owner, smiled and greeted me as they sat at the table in the restaurant, which helped ease the frustration of the server and my small portion size. I would return and try something else.

The food was ok to me. This was my second visit. The first time it was really good. I went on a Sunday so maybe it was busy and the food may have been rushed. It's a black-owned business as well. They were cleaning and asking if you needed help the whole time. That was a plus. They are average price for soul food. I will give them another try.

This is it. Nothing else needs to be said. The food is out of this world. No matter what you get, you will be happy and satisfied.

Food was decent - Loved the yams, but didn't get excited over the cabbage. Fried chicken was decent but one of my pieces was really over cooked. The server was kind enough to give me a replacement piece plus one! My cocktail - a strawberry margarita (in styrofoam cup) was great. The tea cakes were very good (full of flavor & my favorite item of the day! Make sure your food is hot when you make your request cos some of mine was cold by the time I sat down to eat.

We took a drive out from Fort Worth and was so excited to see how great it was and it didn't disappoint. We came about 20 minutes after they opened and they we're already busy. We ordered the catfish and smothered turkey leg. Our sides were greens, Mac and cheese, dressing and candied yams. We couldn't finish it all, the portions were too big. We took home the best banana pudding and finished that off tonight. The service was excellent and we will make the trip again.

This was my first visit. I was really wanting some home-cooked food or like home cooked food so we decided to try. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the restaurants history. While we were in line selecting our sides, the older lady waiting behind us told us the yams were delicious. Personally I don't care for any candied yams in general but my husband did try them and liked them. I had the smothered chicken with gravy. When eating out I generally do not order a lot of starches, which is just my preference so for my sides I chose pinto beans, string beans and cabbage. They were all seasoned well yet not salty. I enjoyed my meal and will definitely try them again.

We went for soul food and that is exactly what we got! Everything was on point except the cornbread was not sweet enough for us. We went right when they opened and the food was fresh and delicious. Definitely recommend and I would go back.

My first time going here since before the pandemic and though the place is nice and the service was familiar, the food was ok. The price was higher than I expected..I had a dinner with short ribs and 3 sides plus dessert. I paid $30..,(didn't expect that)

I had today's special. Baked chicken, it was delicious with candid yams and cabbage. I didn't enjoy the cabbage like the rest of the food. The cabbage was hot, either a little spicy or the pepper. I don't like any type of .

Okay, imma need two 90 minute tapes...The food was pretty good. I was expecting it to much better. I had The smothered pork chops, yams, green beans and mac n cheese. The portions were on point and the sides were hittin! The pork chops had good flavor but were tough. The customer service wasn't so good. I would have felt better if the server said she didn't feel like making no more plates today or of the man, who I think is the owner by the Facebook photos, said he didn't need my money. Which he probably doesn't. And cool with me too. Then I got my food in a to go box, but when I ordered my drink i got it on a regular plastic cup. Attention to detail was lacking. The owner's complacent attitude was very disappointing. I think this place neefs some cistoner service and divetsity training. If i would have went by myself the experience may have been different. To sum it up I left here I felling like, This is it? Not a good first impression for out of towners.

If it weren't for the watered down sweet tea and the lack of chitterlings, I would have given this place 5 stars. The food was amazing. The sweet tea was more like sugar water. It was the color of crĆØme soda. I gave it back for a soda (which I normally do not drink). The lady who gave out the meat chose to put my little scoop of chitterlings on the same plate as my cabbage, mac and cheese and my sweet potatoes. Then she only gave me something equivalent to one scoop. But put peoples chicken, pork chops, ox tails, peppered steak, etc., on a separate plate??? Ummm...I didn't pay $12.25 to be short changed...just tell me that you don't have enough chitterlings to complete my order OR go to the back and get more. I didn't notice it was so few until I was seated because they were placed on top of my cabbage. The lady on the veggies said to me "There are light cabbage and dark cabbage...you didn't know that?", when I asked her if there were collards mixed with the cabbage (well, lady, did you know that some people mix their collards and cabbage greens??? Just answer the question.) Besides that, my meal was good....My family owns a soul food restaurant in Louisiana, and I love good home cooking.....and good customer service.

My sister and I were looking for somewhere to kill some time yesterday afternoon before catching our 7:00pm train back to Cali; so we googled āsoul foodā and headed to the one that was closest to our room. As we entered we were greeted with a, how yāall doingā from the gentleman behind the counter who served us our sides! The wonderful aroma of mamaās home cooking also greeted us upon entering, sorry servers but everything smelled and look so good that we had trouble making our choices! I finally chose smothered pork chops, green beans, cabbage & mashed potatoes & gravy and man o man i was definitely tempted to slap someoneās mama (not mine)š! The portion were so large that i was actually able to have 3 full meals and was full each time! I donāt know when or if Iāll be back to Houston but if ever i do come back i will definitely be back at Houston This is it Soul Food getting my grub on!
