When I’m deciding on food for lunch or dinner, the item that I am most likely to seek is a burger. Living in a large city like Houston, it is easy to find a restaurant serving beef patties on a bun piled high with your favorite toppings and one burger joint I have visited and liked is Southwell’s Hamburger Grill.
This Southwell location is located off the main road, so many people do not even realize that it’s here. It is very close to interstate 10, and thus easy enough to find. It is larger on the inside than expected, with a good number of tables and booths, enough to seat upwards of one hundred people.
Burgers are the reason you visit Southwell’s. The menu consists of burgers, sides, and shakes and you order at the counter, then wait for the food to be delivered to your table. One thing I like is that they have a small display, right there on the counter when you order, showing the topping options. This helps make the process faster, since customers are not looking all over the place trying to find the choices. Burgers are prepared to order, and with this easily visible display, it is easy to see the topping choices and order exactly what you want. And there are about 20 different burgers from which to choose, along with a few chicken sandwiches, salads, etc.
Burgers and sides are all sold separately at Southwell’s. There isn’t a combo meal menu. That means you can either go light and order just a burger and drink, or add a side if you want. I love the onion rings served here, so I will usually get that as my side item. Combined with a juicy burger on wheat or white bun, with the toppings of my choosing, makes for a satisfying meal.
Service at Southwell’s Hamburger Grill is efficient. In a matter of minutes, they have the food for you, delivered to your table. It’s only a little slower than the service at a fast- food restaurant, but much faster than the service at a full service restaurant. And the food is easily better than fast food and on- par with that of most full service establishments.
Houston is known for its burger culture. Southwell’s Hamburger Grill is a good place for a quick burger fix, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good burger, prepared the way you like it.
Great Burger and Fries!!! First bite you can taste the crisp toasted bun, crispy bacon and warm cheese and meat. The second and third bite gets you into the vegetables, they are stacked well! The meat patty for sure will fill you up, it will be hard to finish the entire burger abs fries. I chose the waffle fries, and they did not disappoint. I will for sure visit this location again, they know how to make a tasty burger!
Was in town on business and was told to try this place out. It’s a mom and pop burger joint (with 4 locations around Houston) and is no frills, old fashioned style. I got the basic double cheeseburger with fresh cut fries.
Double Cheeseburger 7/10 - the meat is under seasoned for me, but everything else was great. From the large pickle slices and fresh bread, it made for a great burger. I personally just added some S&P and was content.
Fresh Cut Fries 8/10 - I liked these because they were almost crispy and definitely fresh, had cut potatoes.
Service 7/10 - it’s a counter order style joint, and they just bring the food out. Pretty much self serve. The staff was friendly though overall.
Atmosphere 7/10 - again, it’s a no frills and basic old school style burger joint.
Overall 8/10 - I definitely recommend to give them a chance if in the area. You never really know what to expect with places like this, but this one did not disappoint!

This location has been here for 18 years! That's impressive in this ever so changing world we live in now.
The burgers are old fashion style with perfectly toasted buns and made to order. The onion rings are medium thickness. Service was great and the items were delivered to the table fairly quickly with a smile. The prices are really good too.
They play great music (Elvis was on!) from the simpler era. I love the black and white picture hanging on the walls. The neon sign also gives it that 50's diner look. There are plenty of seating options inside as well as a patio with umbrella cover. Parking is easy and right outside of the restaurant.
They need to update the booths. Many have tears in the seat portion and that gives a bad look. I'm surprised no one has repaired them to keep the place looking as nice as possible.
Super chill and casual burger spot. Very convenient for my son at memorial HS. Dining area was pretty full but his sandwich came out within a few minutes. Reasonable prices and quick service make it a great little lunch spot.
My family and grandparents have been taking me here for my whole life. We have loved our times here; my grandfather has probably picked up food here over 100 times! It is great food for after kids’ sports games or lunch in the afternoon. My brother loves their grilled cheese sandwich. The cons are that the food is a little overpriced and sometimes under seasoned. I have loved the Cathy’s Chicken Salad and grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, and bacon. The staff is pretty friendly. I have had great experiences here overall. Their milkshakes are really good; they are not too sweet, which is nice. Highly recommend for lunch or after kids’ sport games.
Great atmosphere it feels very homey with excellent service. The food was amazing, great portions as well.
Great food. Amazing staff. And they also play good classic music
Our Go to burger joint mainly on a Friday night or Sunday for hangovers. Great old school burgers.
If I am going burger I get the double with cheese no lettuce. For some reason double burgers are always juicier and the cheese is more melty.
If I am not as hungry I get the Chicken Supreme. Excellent toasty bun, thin pounded breast sautéed on the flat top, with crispy bacon, melty american cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
Sandwiches are always accompanied with a side of onion rings and waffle fries. Ask for some of their ranch for dipping. Probably in my top five of restaurant ranches.
Wash it all down with a Dr. Pepper. The styro cups are awesome they are great for mixed drinks afterwards.
Crazy local Ham Joint catering mainly to high school students from the school next door. A place for teens to be seen. Food isn’t bad but fries are usually soggy and cold. I keep going back as it beats the fast food joints
Southwells does not disappoint, this is my second time eating here, bacon cheese with Monterrey jack and the chili cheese fries are a dream team. Also want to give thanks to the staff for providing great service. I will be back again and again and again…
Delicious in its own little way, pretty busy the times I've visited but they are pretty quick about getting food out. Most drinks are given from behind the counter, sweet tea and water and a few eatery items to the side.
Casual place with booth tables and regular tables, good vibe too! Fries aren't "amazing" but definitely go for waffle over fresh cut.
Highly recommend. The burgers are absolutely delicious. You can tell they are homemade and are seasoned well. The onion rings are hot and fresh! Don't order a double unless you want to be useless the rest of the day.
This is a great place for burgers or a variety of other sandwiches. They are one in a million that carries the old school patty melt. Down to its original ryebread .
One of the things I like most about this restaurant is the variety on the menu. Sometimes I’m craving a burger, but one of veggie burger or something different and their black bean. Veggie burger is really pretty good. I like the fact that they employ kids from the neighborhood and it truly is a local place.
