Stopped for a quick quick bite and really enjoyed the vibe of this place. Kinda reminded me of a Bass Pro Shop with all the decor. The service is counter still order your food then find a spot to sit until your buzzer goes off. We had the lobster soup and the fried catfish and shrimp basket. Food was good and overall it was a good dinner experience. If you have a billy bass fish just laying around you can bring it in for some free food.
Definitely a place anybody should visit at least once, and then maybe more if you love it. We were so confused when the GPS brought us to some place that looks like a hole in the wall built from an old gas station. My daughter did not want to go in, but we're glad we did. Absolutely unique and adorable decor, lots of ambiance, lots of things to look at. They have a great menu and if we come back, would love to try some different things. We ordered the catfish and shrimp platter with a side of calamari. The shrimp were great, the catfish was pretty good but definitely needs more spices in the batter. Batter. The calamari was a little disappointing. Disappointing. Extremely overcooked and hard and dry, but I feel like that's pretty common in Houston so you might be okay with it if that's what you're used to. Next time, I definitely want to try the chowders or gumbo and some other dishes. Kids will love it and adults will too.
Great Food and Great Service!! First time at The Flying Fish. I had the Chimichurri Rainbow Trout with Grilled Veggies, Fried Okra and a cup of Gumbo. The trout was nice and tender pairing nicely with the herbal and tangy notes of the chimichurri sauce which really enhanced the flavor of the fish. As far as the sides go, the fried okra was crispy and had a great texture and the grilled veggies were cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed this meal and I am definitely going back to explore their different menu offerings.
This place was great. Welcoming home style seafood restaurant. The guy at the register was cool and helped us since it was our first time there. We ordered a lot of food that was cooked to perfection. I had the Hog Wallow Fry. Which had fried catfish, shrimp, and oysters. The oysters were the best I had in a long time. We had enough food to take home. I will definitely be back.
It was our first time. I can only attest to the fried oysters, frog legs and onion rings, lol 🤭. I liked the seasoning on the frog legs, they should have put that seasoning on everything (I could taste the seasoning).
Low key fish shack vibe. Order and pick up at the counter. Wide selection of fried and grilled seafood combos. Plenty of sides to choose from, too. We really enjoyed the fried shrimp and catfish basket with fries. Lots of fun things to look at on the walls and friendly people behind the counter. Seating inside and out. Clean, unassuming, highly recommend!
Tried this place for the first time of I’m sure will be many last night. Service was friendly and food came out quick and hot. Both of my friends enjoyed their dishes as well. Very broad menu with plenty options. Gotta go back to get the hula poppers. The fried Jalapeño chips were phenomenal and came with two dipping sauces. Dining room was spacious and very cool. Would highly recommend.
Flying fish is THE BEST seafood restaurant. Period!! The salmon is perfect every time and the catfish is absolutely amazing. They have the best hush puppies as well. I love this place. Its my favorite!!
Good customer service and prices, the 18 oz margarita was on happy hour ($1 off) when I went so that was a nice surprise. It was also incredibly strong for a frozen margarita before I fully mixed it with the flavoring add-on (no extra cost for that btw).
This is one of the better places I’ve been to in the area for fried seafood, especially for value for price. I got the 1 fish/4 shrimp fried combo and subbed the fries and hush puppies for a corn on the cob. The corn itself had plenty of butter but no flavor and wasn’t sweet. Definitely corn intended to be cut up and put in a seasoned boil rather than served on its own, in my opinion. The fish filet and shrimp where a little thin for my liking but seasoned well enough. Because they were thinner though, the fry batter was a little much. Overall though, would come back if I need a convenient fried seafood fix.
Got the catfish and shrimp combo with fried okra. The food was very tasty and fresh. Prices are reasonable. This was my first time, I would definitely return. Excuse the picture, I was so hungry and started eating it before taking a pic 😂
I’m not a big fan of seafood but I love Cajun style food. Ever since they opened their business, I’ve been wanting to try this place. This is a cool and casual gas station they turned it to a restaurant with a very spacious restaurant with good atmosphere. Don’t panic because of a long line, it keeps moving. Everything was pretty good. The food is very flavorful my only issue was the jambalaya that I ordered was tasty but is extremely spicy and also the fries were too greasy, other than that my three crispy fish tacos were amazingly tasty and great and I think I will come back there to get more fish tacos for sure. Good job!
When you first walk in , it not only looks great with decor, and smells great, but the ac blows wonderful 😊we ordered, 2fountain drinks, 2 orders of the 2 catfish with 4 shrimp platter, I added a side salad, key lime pie and my friend added 4 pounds of crawfish🥹🥹🥹🥹🥴🥴🥴🤗🥰the fish platter's & salad where perfect 🥹the crawfish was a little bit over cooked, she added sausage, I believe they put like 3 or 4 pieces, and like two potatoes one corn. I wish for the amount of crawfish they would have added more sausage, potatoes & corn. But every place is different, this one you buy separately, some places you get it already mixed in together, and a big quantity..the key lime pie I wanted to wait till after my food so they stated they put it up till I was ready..which they did..when I got it it was a bit watery at the bottom and the Only part I liked was the top, which was a bit disappointing..other than that we will definitely be back, next time I plan to try something different possibly from their baked menu....I will update when I do🤗🫶🏼 Definitely recommend
Repeat customers. Wife and i came in sunday around 5pm, 7/16/23, walked right up to counter and we each ordered the 1/2 lb crab 1/2 lb shrimp boil. Each comes with 2 potatoes ,1/2 ear of corn, hot butter and cocktail sauce. Perfect amount of food for each of us. Lightly seasoned, just right. Fresh lemonade and sweet tea are perfect. Our favorite go to spot for a seafood hankering, at reasonable prices. Have yet to have had a bad meal/experience in all the times we've been. The guy that runs the place ALWAYS aims to please, shame on me for not knowing his name by now, but we are always happy to see him and have him take our order. Restaurant is always clean. They always have old blues music playing, vibe is relaxing and fun. So much better than the good old days of red lobster. Plenty of parking, but construction is ongoing in the area (never a deal breaker, just be aware). Almost forgot, small bit of advice, if you intend to be back, ask for the "fishing license"!
The food was good but I deducted a star because I didn't get what I ordered. They gave me the wrong plate. I didn't realize it until I was half way through the food and my friend asked didn't you order such ans such. I looked at the paper menu and saw that I didn't get the correct plate. This was our first visit. I let it go because I'd eaten the majority of the food and liked it. But it still wasn't what I ordered.
Great food! Quirky atmosphere and a nice staff. I had the boiled crab and was delighted that it had a bit of spice to it. Fried shrimp was delicious, made with corn meal batter. They have a nice beer selection as well!
Awesome seafood selections including Cajun items. Everything from fried to boiled including gumbo she fresh raw oysters. Order at the counter and sit wherever you like. Small patio available. No liquor, but lots of local and international beers including a couple on tap. Great service, made fresh.
Can't be beat for fried fish, fried okra and hush puppies! It's not fancy at all. The food is good and that's what matters. If you're in the Heights and hungry for some good fried seafood, give them try.
