Probably my fave spot in Huntsville...definitely my favorite in the downtown/Five Points area. The brunch is fantastic. As a vegetarian, I am so appreciative of a menu that has not just one or two options but several! And not all just salads or pastas. The vegetarian sausage that they have at breakfast is so delicious and actually does taste like sausage. I would love to know if those are made in house or able to be purchased somewhere. The service is also great. I love having this spot in my neighborhood.

Was in town for just two nights and was looking for a good, eclectic, local place and found 1892 here on Yelp. I wasn't disappointed. Great menu selection, including chicken, fish, pork, and beef, as well as multiple vegetarian entrees. I had tempeh with pasta. It was very tasty and well seasoned. I also had the day's soup, a delicious tomato bisque. The restaurant is located in the neat, historic 5 Points neighborhood. 1892 has a full bar. Servers were friendly and professional. Check out 1892 if you're in town!
Was in Huntsville for the day and wanted to try somewhere new to eat. Found it in the web. It was Sunday brunch time and we didn’t have a reservation. No worries just a 5 minute wait, they were busy. 😊 Food was fresh and delicious! Our waitress was efficient, courteous, and fast. A mimosa comes with brunch but since I don’t drink alcohol she made it without. We will definitely return!!
Excellent food. Lunch menu had choices for all your varied taste. The decor and layout was well thought out. The chicken pot pie that I chose to go with was exceptional. Price points are right on point.
Today was our first time eating at 1892 East. We had a really great brunch. Our waiter, David, was excellent and provided first rate service. The food was served quickly and was nice and hot. The Mimosa's were a nice touch. We look forward to coming back again. Good selection on the 80's punk/mod tunes as well.
1892 E is our "go to" restaurant for a variety of reasons!! It's locally owned, food served is locally grown for the most part, servers are great and food is super good! They usually have a fresh seafood special plus one other. They have a very decent wine and beer selection as well. The only complaint ( not really too significant) I've ever had is that the white wines are not chilled enough. I wish they could resolve this issue! We always look forward to dining here, whether it's lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch!! I so hope they never close like other restaurants have in this location!! Thank you, 1892 East!
After league bowling on Tuesdays we always go somewhere to eat and since it was Valentines Day we and another couple were looking for a really good restaurant for lunch. We were warmly welcomed even though we were a little more casual (not extremely casual) than many we saw dining! Our hostess and server were very attentive. I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and loved it! My husband and I have enjoyed brunch several times at 1892 also!
My husband and I dropped by yesterday (having the day off) and ate a lovely meal. Enjoyed the food, ambiance and the staff was attentive as well. Having the leftovers today and remembering how good it was! We will be back.
Everything was perfect and our waiter, David, was top notch. We were visiting Huntsville from Pensacola and we are now jealous of you Huntsville folks that have access to such great cuisine.
The food was so good. Great vegetarian choices. Everything was so fresh and flavorful! The waiter "Chuck" was amazing too. So friendly and attentive!
I will return next time I am in Huntsville!
We visited you guys last night. We had read so many good things about you and it did not disappoint! Our waiter, David, was absolutely wonderful and the food was amazing! The French press coffee was perfect and desserts are big enough to share and delicious. We will definitely be back!
Everything I have eaten at 1892 East has been not merely delicious but also delightful, the service is impeccable, and the art show I did there with Ann Vann was handled beautifully. I love this restaurant, will come back again and again, and recommend it highly to anyone who knows how to appreciate a genuinely special atmosphere and menu!
I had the stuffed trout and it was wonderful! The service is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxing. I would recommend dining there to anyone.
Amazing food, wonderful staff. I have been for brunch and dinner, and the food was the best I have ever had. The flourless tart is my favorite!
My wife and I had dinner here yesterday. I had the Grilled Swordfish and the chocolate tort for dessert. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Can't wait to come back.
The food was amazing. I had the tenderloin plate and beet salad. Best meal I had while staying in Alabama. The service there was exceptional as well.
Beautiful atmosphere and delicious food! I had the lunch sautéed shrimp with spinach, roasted tomatoes, onions and a fried polenta grit cake. The meal was light but satisfying! But my overall favorite item was the coffee!! I will definitely be returning!
Dinner this evening at The 1892 East Restaurant and Tavern was simply wonderful. I dined on their stuffed trout entree, which was heavenly. This is a lovely farm to table restaurant that is definitely a "hidden gem". Our service was impeccable and the menu is unique and notable. Two thumbs up!
The service is five-star. The fried shrimp is stuffed with grits. Awesome! It's a bucket list thing but you must try it for yourself. The food is great. I love the Dreamsicle Martini. I will return.
A place that I have every intention of visiting again. I have a belief that if a place can make a burger taste like more than a burger they can probably make everything else taste special as well and my burger was very special. They have a good menu that is succinct yet covers enough bases to provide variety. Service is attentive and very friendly.
This place has an awesome menu that changes seasonally. They use a lot of locally sourced ingredients so the food if amazingly fresh! They also have several local brews on tap!
One of the best restaurants ever.
Amazing food, great specials, desserts, the whole nine yards.
They also use really wholesome ingredients from the most local sources possible.
I found this place on a whim while staying the night in Huntsville. It is a little bit of a higher end establishment, but I think their prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. It starts with a nice little basket of bread that they bake using leftover grains from a local brewery, and serve it with a house made white bean spread. That was a nice touch before the meal. I chose the Espresso Brisket dinner, and a half order of the roasted beet salad. The beet salad was exemplary. The Brisket was braised and had a good texture, and I loved the espresso glaze that came with it. I wish I lived closer, as I would be back to try everything.
In my opinion this is such a creative and unique place. I'd never even heard of chickpea fries before let alone had them and they came with a lovely dipping sauce too! I really enjoy trying unique things that are actually tasty and 1892 east really met that desire for me. Good food, good atmosphere, nice date spot but it's not all that large so you should probably call ahead.
Fried Green Tomatoes. Perfectly fried with goat cheese and aioli... Heaven!
One Wednesday night, my mother and I were going to the Buddy Guy & Johnny Lang concert at the VBC. We had to grab a bite and I thought, I want something fresh and SEASONAL. 1892 came first to mind. So we got inside and on a wait for about 30 minutes. Apparently many like minded people had the same idea to crash 1892 without reservations before the concert!
As always the food was DELICIOUS!
I also love this place because I've found the best vegetarian options in town and the only place I've been to that cares about incorporating local. This is the kind of place you want to stay and have as many courses as you can fit. They also have a great coffee/tea dessert selection so I could see just going for that. For a small-ish bar they have a great variety of local craft beer on draft and a spectrum of cocktails. I'm actually house hunting at the moment and looking for a place in 5 points & walking distance to 1892. Any leads?
Give it a try, farm to table, and vegeterian friendly. Since opening in 2010, 1892 East is a plesant restaurant in the former Sazio’s/Starfish restaurant location in Huntsville’s historic Five Points area. It is located in the same “strip mall” that is home to Star Market grocery store.
We’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day, my birthday with a large group, and several other visits with friends at 1892 East. I’ve enjoyed the food in large and small groups, special occasions and just a simple weekend lunch or brunch. The bar staff are particularly attentive and helpful, if you choose to dine at the bar.
According to Executive Chef Steven Bunner: “The eatery's name comes from an early map notation regarding Five Points.”
For those who are vegetarian, 1892 East is a very vegetarian-friendly place, and even notes on their web site that Most Brunch dishes can be made vegetarian by substituting vegan sausage for bacon or ham at no additional charge.
On to the dining experiences:
NOTE: Their menu changes seasonally, which is nice, but makes it difficult to recall what one had at previous visits.
BRUNCH: Brunch comes with a complimentary mimosa. The steak and eggs are delicious and filling. Mom had the “Southern Benedict” – eggs Benedict on a biscuit vice an English muffin. Mom cleaned her plate! My birthday brunch was for a party of ~ 14 and there was ample seating in the separate back dining area. Food was good and mimosas flowed freely.
LUNCH: We typically order several apps to share. There is no extra cost to share a dish. I’ve had the flatbread, I think it was the “BLT flatbread” and the shrimp and grits.
DINNER: I’ve had the shrimp and grits several times, and it is a solid dish. Done differently, it seems as if the shrimp are dipped into the grits and then deep fried. The “catch of the day” was a good dinner choice at Valentine’s day. I don’t recall the type of fish. The wine list is fairly extensive offering both reasonably priced wines by the glass and by the bottle.
The only complaint I have is that the main dining area can get a little noisy as it has concrete floors and wooden tables.
Do try 1892 East, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It appears to meet its vision of: A unique Huntsville restaurant that is defined by the food-farmer-neighbor interactions to provide the highest quality local, organic and vegetarian foods.
It was fabulous!! My new favorite restaurant! I was highly impressed with the food and presentation. The salads and entrees were spaced perfectaly. The venison feature was tender and cooked to perfect, as was the rib eye. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits and the apple salad. Our waitress Miriam was very sweet and helpful as well
Great brunch!. Have been here for several wonderful dinners, but today was the first time at their brunch. Incredibly good. A lot of unique items ( I had the Dutch babies with lemon curd and berries) but also pancakes, omelets, eggs and bacon and such familiar offerings as well. Delicious French press coffee, and a mimosa that came with the entree.
Great service; great food. My friend and I were visiting Huntsville from Birmingham and arrived Friday night around dinner time. We were hungry and didn't know the area. My phone told me we were close to 1892 so I checked the website. I saw that they took reservations and figured it would be a waste of time to just walk in on a Friday and expect a table. Before making our way there I called and asked the hostess what our chances would be of being seated without a reservation. She was very nice and said if I didn't mind a short wait they could fit us in. I gave her my name and fifteen minutes later we walked in the front door. They already had the table ready for us. Wow.
Our server was Christina and she was delightful. We had lots of questions about the menu (which had changed just a couple of days ago) and she answered them all without hesitation. My friend got the bacon salad appetizer (that's not what it's really called but bacon was the star) He wished it had more than one piece of super thick bacon but it was good. After hearing Christina describe the lump crab meat gnocchi cooked with cheddar cheese in a little cast iron skillet I had to order it--even tho I've never had lump crab meat in my life. It was incredibly good but so rich! So filling! If you order it, ask for an extra plate because it's enough for two people. I nearly ruined my appetite for dinner on that appetizer.
I got the brisket and my friend got the pork (I wish I could remember the official names, which are much more descriptive of the entrees). We each took bites of each others' supper and agreed that both were fantastic. One side note, before the appetizers arrived my friend went to the rest room. When Christina brought our appetizers he told the the Men's room was out of paper towels. When I finished my appetizer I went to the bathroom too, and the paper towels had been replenished. So not only had Christina passed that along to the right people, but the right people wasted no time acting to correct it. Good service isn't always limited to the food.
The side dishes (mashed sweet potatoes and broccolini) were also very good. My friend got the bread pudding for dessert--which again was enough for two people. I ordered a glass of the tawny port but they were out. I asked Christina to suggest a dessert wine. She said she really liked the Ice White Wine. I told her I didn't care for white wines and she said I'd like this one. I told her I'd trust her judgment and she promised if I didn't like it she wouldn't charge me for it.
I loved it. (Ice Wine doesn't mean they plop ice in the wine glass; it means the grapes were allowed to freeze on the vine before being harvested.)
Between the attitude of the hostess when she was confronted with out of towners with no reservations, the prompt attention to the bathroom and the exceptional care that we received from Christina, the service at 1892 is among the best I've ever had. The food also ranks at the top. It was merest chance that brought us there Friday night, but it's now a required stop on all future trips to Huntsville.
Best brunch in town, hands down!! I get excited when a place knows how to cook vegetarian entrees as well as the regular entrees. If you go for dinner, I suggest coffee and dessert..its always soo good. If you go for brunch, get the coffee :D
I had brunch at 1892 today and couldn't be more pleased. After going to another restaurant at 1:45pm to have brunch (they closed at 2:00 - I know, we eat late but we tip well!) and being turned away, we decided to go 1892 to see if we could have a good meal. They sat us without any qualms at 1:50 and were incredibly accommodating, not rushing us or pushing us at all. The French toast and the omelette special were delicious! And the bartender, Allen, was awesome. I highly recommend 1892 for brunch and every other meal.
Enjoyed our meals. I thought our server was perfect. The restaurant is cute and quaint.
A personal local favorite. My husband and I love, love, love eating here. The food is fresh and the staff and their service are excellent.
Neither of us have had a bad meal here, ever. It's a great place for those who are vegetarians as well as those who want to support not just local restaurants but also local farmers/breweries.
My personal favorite item is the chicken pot pie - melts in my mouth! I'm salivating just thinking about it.
If we go at dinner time, I usually get the chef's special. The chef has a gift of pairing the flavors quite nicely.
If you are a beer drinker, this is a great place to try local beers.
I could literally eat here everyday! The best food in huntsville! It's also so reassuring to know that their meat is hormone and antibiotic free! We strive so hard to eat that way at home, so it is nice to be able to go out and eat healthy! Love J Sparks hydroponics farm as well, which is where they get a lot of their produce! Try the chicken you won't regret it!!
GFCF Friendly. Having had to go GFCF finding restaurants has been a harder task. However, I had no trouble here. I let the waiter know what I needed and it was delicious. You know the food is good when you can strip it down and take away the butter, etc and it's still wonderful. This is one of our tops for go-to dining out places now.
Had our Wedding rehearsal dinner here. Below is a copy of the e-mail I sent the staff at 1892 East after our wedding rehearsal dinner.
"We had our rehearsal dinner in your restaurant (1892 East) on June 7th. We had originally planned for 20 guests and changed to 24 guests the day before the dinner. This was no issue for you and your team, which was a welcome relief. On the day of the dinner we actually had two more people show up who we didn't think would be there and asked to make the adjustment to 26 when we got there. Again, you and your team took this in stride and found more chairs and menus for the extra guests.
The back room (newly renovated) there was very cozy and everyone had just enough room to sit comfortably, even with the two additional settings. I think much more than 25 to 26 people and that room would be just a little small. For our group, it was great.
The appetizers came out first and each one was great. The shrimp with the bread and tomato was perhaps just a bit big for multiple bites but that is splitting hairs as the dish was excellent tasting. My favorite was the risotto in the spoon in which the rice was perfect. My fiance, and now wife, loved the stuffed mushrooms.
We had a choice of 4 different dinners and each one was met with great reviews at my table. I personally had the salmon and it had just the right amount of sweet to it. The green beans had just enough crunch as well. My wife had the beef and it was cooked just right at medium rare. A large portion of the guests ordered the steak and no one complained about temperature so kudos to your staff getting all them correct and out in a timely manner. Oh and although I had the salad for my personal appetizer, I talked to a couple people that had the tomato soup and said it was fantastic. A couple people were looking forward to the celery root soup, but you had switched it in the last week or two due to seasonal changes. After having this soup, the couple who were looking forward to the celery root had no reservations about missing it and loved the tomato soup.
The dessert was cheesecake and each one was a big portion and was very light and delicious. Everyone walked away with very full bellies and many thanks were given to us for picking such a great place to have our rehearsal dinner.
We have eaten in the restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. The catering team and staff did a great job cooking in mass for us and everything went very smooth. A large thanks should go to Allen(sp?) for taking care of our entire party with a smile on his face and quickly resolving any issues that cropped up. Mike the general manager helped out a large part of the night and with a full dining room besides our party, that was very much appreciated as well. Chef Steve has a great taste for food and has a great team there at 1892 East. We were definitely pleased with how everything turned out and will definitely be back soon. Thanks so much for making the dinner preparations and for making our rehearsal night dinner great for us and our guests!"
Needless to say we would highly recommend 1892 East to anyone in the area who has a chance to stop in for some great food and atmosphere.
Burgers are fabulous, the best I have ever had!
Asked for something not on the menu on a Sunday morning and they produced it. Onion marmalade is wonderful with cheese. Eggs Benedict is to die for. And I asked for bourbon with my coffee... no problem. Night nurse and breakfast was dinner for me.
Great Lunch Greater Service. Went in for lunch after an extended business trip, it was simply amazing. If you haven't been in for a delicious lunch I would implore you to try it out.
I had the 1892 Burger w/ Fresh Cut Fries and one of their local Microbrews. It was simply the best burger I have had in years.

Delicious~. Ate brunch there with a friend about a week ago, and it was delightful. The atmosphere was perfect, and the staff was friendly. The tofu had a bit too much cumin on it for my liking, which gave it a bit of a chalky exterior, but everything else was without issue. Also, their medium roast was the BEST coffee I have ever had!
Before I even talk about the food, the look of the restaurant is amazing. The flatbreads (I've had them all) are spectacular! The tamales are great too! Great place to eat
I could eat their mushroom flatbread, or heirloom tomato flatbread every day if it was possible. The sweet cream of white corn is perfect in every way. They send fried green tomatoes out with an herbed aioli & Serrano cures ham- nothing could complement the tomatoes more. A salad with balsalmic vinaigrette, fresh mozzarella, croutons & a grilled Scott's Orchard Peach.... So simply amazing. And those are just the appetizers. If u go for lunch, I suggest 3 things: the catfish plate, the new Orleans BBQ shrimp, or the Chicken pasta. If you eat dinner: the Salmon, the chicken breast, charleston shrimp boil, or the vegetarian black bean tamales. If u go on Sunday brunch: everything! The menu is local, fresh and seasonal and ever-changing, but don't forget to ask what the special is! You will usually find a slightly different, but always delicious conbination. So as if all this amazingly priced five star food isn't enough, the service is always quality and the people that work there are always very informed and interested in sharing all the fun info about this little local restaurant. Definitely worth trying MORE THAN ONCE. One last thing! Try the house spent bread
The tomato goat cheese appetizer was excellent. The Charleston Boil however was much spicer than the waiter led me to believe. If you like spicy then this for you. I will be back and will have the pork loin my wife said was excellent.
Love the Burger! Everything is fresh and comes from within miles of the restaurant. For those that said service is slow, this is a nicer restaurant so you do not come in a hurry. It's a great place to relax and enjoy real food!
Flatbread from heaven!. First off, LOL at the person who was going back to their, "old hang out, OUTBACK!" Yeah, they took a wrong turn.
I went there last weekend, mid January, we tried 2 of the flatbread "pizzas" and they were AMAZING!! The veggie and the chicken marsala. The bartender was a wonderful fella, we sampled a few beers, he was knowledgable about them. They carry an excellent selection of ON TAP locally brewed beers, and I had a couple wonderful glasses of wine. Their wine, beer and food selection is incredible!! I can't wait to go back. PLUS, they have Sunday BRUNCH! I haven't tried it yet, but it is on the TO DO list. We met both of the owners, they were very sweet, friendly, personable, and we received terrific customer service!!! SO happy to have a new place in 35801... AND that corner sat vacant for so long, I couldn't be more pleased with the establishment that now fills that perfect piece of real estate. :)
Great Vegatarian Choices!. I was very happy to see a restaurant open in Sazio's old location. I was even more pleased after trying it. There is finally an upscale restaurant in Huntsville that offers a variety of vegetarian meals.
We have been here several times for supper and once for lunch. The food and service have been impeccable. For lunch, I cannot recommend the battered tofu highly enough! It's like having the most perfectly cooked fish and chips you'll ever find.
This restaurant is a valuable addition to the Five Points area.
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!. My husband and I are vegetarians and we adore 1892. The roasted squash plate, the beer-battered tofu, the mushroom sandwich, the curry-glazed tofu, and the roasted tomato tamales have all been some of the best meals we've eaten in Huntsville. The wait staff have been mixed--some good and some atrocious (to be fair, we've never seen either of the atrocious wait staff back again, so I think that will be improving as they find better staff) and the front of house seating ladies have been universally rude. I think it's unfortunate that so many people think good taste means acting like a snob. However, the food, excellent wine and beer list, and the ambience make those little annoyances worthwhile.
Update: We went for brunch today for the first time and I'm even more in love with this restaurant. The cheddar and spinach quiche was sublime and perfectly seasoned! Our waiter was delightful and the front staff (the seating ladies) were friendly and chatted with us as we sat down. I think they've gotten all the kinks with service worked out., and as I said in my original review, the food was worth the occasional bad service.
A new place with good potential. The menu was limited on our first visit but I expect it to grow over the next couple of months. Same with the wine list. The waiter expressed great interest in suggestions for expanding it. We'll definitely return.
Great food-few ideas for atmosphere. My husband and I ate at 1892 for the first time and were really impressed! I had a light meal - apple and brie salad with the featured potato soup. The salad had a hint of heat and a perfectly matched dressing - just the right amount too. The soup was hearty and filling. My husband had the seared duck and sweet potato hash. The duck was perfectly cooked and the presentation looked like it could have been from the pages of a Barefoot Contessa cookbook. Kudos to the chef. My only suggestion would be to work on the atmosphere just a bit. I would suggest some background jazz music (especially for the bar area), dimming the lights, and putting some type of candle lighting on each table. I would also probably ditch the two small tables for two at the entrance. It makes the dining a little crowded and less intimate as people begin to come and go. The wine and beer selections were excellent. I had a fantastic pinot noir suggested by our waiter. Oh yes, the wait staff was impressive also - very friendly and knowledgeable. This is a restaurant worth visiting.
Splitting an entree at 1892 East. First, let me state that I am part owner of the restaurant (so this isn't a review) but I wanted to clarify our policy regarding splitting an entree.
There are two ways to split an entree at 1892 East. First, you can split your meal between two plates and we will add additional sides if needed but there is an up charge for doing this. Second, you can just share from the same entree, as is, without a charge. We do not charge for sharing an appetizer (appetizers are in fact by their nature made to share :)).
In the case of the customer that was not told I do apologize your server did not inform you of the charge or clarify your preferences. We have since stressed the importance of doing so. I'm sincerely sorry for the confusion and do hope you return.
Was great!. After reading one of the earlier reviews here I was getting a bit nervous but it's new and local so a few friends and I went down there for dinner last week.
I have to tell you it was great. We split one of their "lite item" mushroom flat breads for an appetizer and it was really good. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was over-loaded with toppings so if you tried to eat it like a pizza all the stuff would fall off onto our plate. We just ate them with a fork. I can't really say it was a bad thing cause who is gonna complain about too many toppings?
Oh, something else that I forgot to mention. They have this bean spread stuff that comes with the bread. It was good but I like butter with my bread so I asked and they brought me out some.
Anyway, for our entrees we had two steaks and two pork chops. Service was polite and relatively speedy, so no complaint there. The steaks were pretty good and cooked right for a change. It is nice when you can get an ACTUAL medium-rare.
The pork chop on the other hand is the star of this restaurant. Amazing. Perfectly cooked and tender. Flavorful and juicy. From some local farmer or something, I don't remember where, but really really great. In fact, that is THE reason I am writing this review. I normally don't write them but when I couldn't stop thinking about a pork chop I ate after a week I figured I should let others know about it.
As for the split fee I had read about? We didn't get charged for splitting the flat bread. Maybe they only charge the split fee for the entrees?
If your looking for something under $10 a person, don't come here, go to Hardee's across the street or Mullin's down the road. BUT, if you don't mind spending $15-$30 on a good meal (Or a GREAT Pork chop!) then give this place a try.
P.S. Seriously, try the pork chop.
Great option!. Nicely reworked space from previous restaurant, excellent menu choices, they even have a dedicated vegetarian menu, not just a section on the main menu. The food was very nicely presented and the wait staff seemed happy to be there, very helpful. The food was excellent, it was a great experience. They try to stock from local sources, everything was fresh. They had a very nice bar as well. Certainly worthy of a visit!
The best new trend in modern restaurants is to ditch the frozen food and concentrate on fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. Farm-to-table creates a healthier way to run a restaurant menu because there are no preservatives needed and fresh vegetables just pulled out of the ground still keep most of their nutrients. With not a huge selection on their menu, you will still find plenty of options including an entire section for vegetarian dishes, and if you need something changed about a dish, the chef in the kitchen can do just about anything. 1892 East opened up this fall in Five Points (where Sazio's used to be, for those that might remember it) and we finally got a chance to try it out this week. The locally sourced, organic ethic is one that is not only good for the local area but also ensures amazingly fresh ingredients and a seasonal menu. We began the evening with the Apple and Brie salad and the comple
It was nice, the ambience was perfect. We went at 5:45pm so it was not crowded at all. The servers were on point (the two ladies helped everyone), the hostess was very nice and made sure everyone's water was topped off. Food was delicious and filling, the price was a tad steep but I've paid more other places. Now the drinks, the drinks definitely worth every penny. We could go there just for drinks and appetizers.
I visited here for lunch yesterday to celebrate my coworker's birthday. This was her choice, and I wasn't mad about it! I had never visited before and was glad to have an excuse to give it a try.
1892 fills a kind of interesting niche in Huntsville. It's definitely nicer/fancier and more expensive than more family-style restaurants like close by Melt or Jack Brown's in downtown Huntsville, but it's not as fancy as super upscale places like the Bottle or Purveyor. The menu focuses on farm to table meals and has a fairly large amount of creative options for vegetarians and vegans.
The interior of the restaurant was larger than I thought it would be. There are two large main rooms and a nice bar. Some of the walls have some chips/scuff marks so the place is showing its age a bit, but the atmosphere was still warm and comfortable.
I have heard great things about their burger for YEARS, so I decided I'd try that. Two of my coworkers split the burger and fries and each got side Caesar salads, and my final coworker ordered the chicken pot pie. I asked for a sweet tea to drink, which was a mistake; I was offered my choice of simple syrup or sweetener to mix in myself. I personally really only think sweet tea is good when the sweetener is added while the tea is brewing, so that was kind of a disappointment.
That aside, though, I wasn't mislead on the burger at all. It was really good! Since it's made with house ground beef, you can choose the degree you want it cooked; I opted for medium well. The medium thickness patty was super, super juicy and had a great beefy flavor. The bun stood up remarkably well to the juiciness of the patty, the melted cheese, AND the balsamic aioli I smeared over every square inch, which was impressive! It had nice crispy outer edges and a soft pillowy center. The aioli was deliciously creamy with a faint, pleasant sourness. Really great burger! The fries were pretty good, but not quite as impressive; ideally, I think I'd have liked them a bit saltier, but they were cooked nicely and paired well with my meal. I'd happily eat them again.
Coworkers' burger wasn't quite cooked to their liking (a little less done that they asked for), but they were happy overall. The salads looked fresh and delicious. The person who got the pot pie said the filling was delicious, though the crust on top was almost more like a cracker and she wished there had been more of it.
Our server was very nice and did his best. They stayed very on top of refills and got our checks out quickly when we asked. However, I think they only had maybe 2 servers for the whole restaurant and they were about half-full. The kitchen must've been slow or understaffed, too, because it took a pretty long time for our food to come out. All told, I think lunch took almost an hour and a half. We hadn't intended to go that long, though it wasn't a huge deal necessarily. Just something to keep in mind if you're looking to go in the near future.
All told, I'd definitely be down to revisit. I'd grab a burger again, easily, and I've also been told their brunch rules! Would love to try that. If you're looking for a middle-range, comfortable spot for a low key date night or celebration, this is a good option to consider, in my opinion.
After reviewing several menus in Huntsville online, we decided to go to 1892 East. We were promptly seated at dinner time on a Saturday evening. We had the trout Hemingway and the pork Ragu. The pork Ragu could not have been improved upon. The polenta cake that came with it was amazing. The only criticism that I have about the trout is that I was hoping it would be more flavorful, more stuffing perhaps. For dessert we had the dark chocolate custard which was one of the best desserts ever! I cannot wait to go back. Highly recommend.
1892 has a warm friendly atmosphere. The food is good and unique to the restaurant. It's locally sourced as I understand. They have a good beer and wine menu as well as cocktails. I think the menu changes regularly, but is always good. There usually are six to eight appetizers and six to eight entrees from which to choose.
1892 is a restaurant with a pleasant ambiance. The dining room is dominated by a large bar in front of the main dining room and a quote of Walt Whitman above it that gives it a taste of class. ("I have learned to be with those I like is enough." Coincidentally or not, Whitman died in 1892.)
Probably my favorite dish here is the catfish. It is fried, and served with green beans and a cornbread muffin. My favorite part of the dish is the cornbread muffin. It is moist, sweet, and has a great flavor.
The catfish is a light brown. Typically, it is served very hot so watch out for burning your tongue when you first bite into it.
There is a full bar. The current menu is still limited, as a result of covid, and should be getting back to normal again unless the management just likes having a smaller range of options.
Our service today was very good. We were having a late lunch and the main dining room was full when we arrived. The tea was excellent, the server was friendly and competent and the food was good.
In short, it was an excellent lunch.
A local restaurant that we used to frequent for brunch and dinner that we had not been to much in the past few years. Now that we only live a few blocks away we decided to walk over and give it try.
Always liked the friendly atmosphere. Seated promptly, server was attentive. Enjoyed our meals and will definitely put it back in our rotation.
