While the prices are a little steep for tamales, the size is massive. This is the biggest tamale I’ve ever seen or eaten, and despite its size, it’s still moist. The masa tastes fresh and reheats well. They have a variety of flavors, the poblano and cheese being one of my favorites. The only downside is that they only make so many a day. When they’re out, they’re out (which happens around mid-dinner time).
The go to place in the area to have one of the best tamales . The ingredients are fresh, the ambiance is nice and the staff is friendly and helpful as well.
Good food but the employees are drab! They need to bring the black lady back. She was funny and a great salesperson she always made me forget how much we we spending. It's so dead now!

Honestly cannot go wrong with this place. Delicious food. QUICK! and fair prices. Amazing veggie options. My only Complaint is that the seating situation is not ideal- they could benefit from an expansion!
Get there early for the best selection and to get a table! All of the tamales are amazing, chips and salsa are fantastic, and it's so much fun!
Great tasting tamales, but to get what you want, you have to go first thing in the morning. Otherwise, by 1 or 2 pm, the selection is dismal. But you have to get there early and the best tamales in the area!!
Come early!. So good! Make sure to arrive earlier for dinner than you might normally, as they might run out of a few options before 6pm. Really good tamales. Also good tacos. Haven't tried the tortas. The chipotle chicken is excellent. They have good salsa, so order some along with your tamales. Also, order more tamales than you think you'll eat, because they warm up very well the next day for a nice lunch.
Love the chips n salsa, someof the tamales are awesome, some are just-meh. Tacos good, tortas not so good! Rude, indifferent cashier! I asked a simple question about what made one chicken tamale different than this other chicken one they had on the menu and she told me they don't give out the recipes....I didn't ask for a recipe, then she tried explaining to me what a tamale was- I know what a tamale is! I just wanted to know the differencein the two chicken tamales-she finally explained the sauce was thicker and more chocolatey.....that's all shehad to say in the first place!! Then a worker mispronounced my name and I smiled and politely corrected her....she rolled her eyes and said- sorry! And it's a standard name that is spelled the standard way! So the eye roll wasn't needed! She was the one who can't read or pronounce basic names!!
Arrived just as they opened on Sunday morning and the line was nearly out the door! I understand why - the food is made from scratch and tastes great. We over ordered, not knowing what the portion sizes are and the cashier was way too busy to ask. FYI, 3 tacos or 2 tamales provide a full meal. We liked the tacos the best. My favorite tamale was the poblano & cheese. Chorizo nachos were good, but a large could have fed 3 people. We live out of state, but I guarantee we'll stop in every time we're in Indianapolis.
Good but Expensive. We stopped one weekend and we'd never been before so we weren't exactly sure what to do.
Staff was too busy to explain things.
We learned that if you don't get there early you may not have much of a choice.
The tamales are expensive when you consider they run $3 and change EACH. For that, they are a good size and have a decent portion of meat inside compared to many other restaurant tamales, which are often only cornmeal.
we also learned that you won't really want to get anything else there... other items were just as expensive and not worth the cost. have a tamale and enjoy.
I had the green sauce pork tamale!! It was excellent!!! I didn't really like the rice, but I didn't come for the rice!! One tamale is plenty!!
The best pork taco ever! Tamales rock! My favorite place in Indy!
Startlingly Good. Food doesn't get much more simple, or more tasty, that this. All hail the mighty yet humble tamale.
Food is out of this world. We are from out of town, and whenever we come to Indiana, we HAVE to go to the tamale place. The tamales are giant and delicious, and sometimes they have dessert tamales like chocolate and pumpkin. Great experience, must go here.
I love this place . I eat here almost weekly . Tacos rock . Tortas are great .
Tamales, Tacos, and Chips—Oh My!. The Huz and I like to go there when the weather is suitable for dining outside. There are only a few tables, and they face the parking lot, but it's better than the indoor option.
As far as tamales go, The Huz likes the chicken in green sauce. He gets that every time but I haven't tasted it. I like the poblano chiles & cheese, which is mild—I'm a wimp when it comes to heat. Last time they gave me a beef in red sauce by accident and it was good so I ordered that again tonight. The beef or the sauce does have a bit of a clove-y taste so if that's not your thing then steer clear.
The combo comes with beans or rice, both of which I think are mediocre. I'd rather spend the stomach space on tamales or, now that I've tasted one, a delicious taco. The Huz got a carne asada taco and the bite I had was OUTSTANDING. The meat was flavorful and tender, the cheese was grilled onto the tortilla, and the toppings were so fresh; a squeeze of lime made it perfect.
The combo also comes with chips & salsa. The chips are made there from the tortillas, which are also made there, and they are so good. Huz always gets the hot salsa and loves it; he took the extra home tonight to enjoy with store-bought tortilla chips.
We got 5% off our order for paying with cash. Definitely ask for that if it's not offered.
Wow! This place is really good! It was packed for lunch on Saturday and there's not many seats we shared with another couple. The taco is the best I've had in the Indy area so far.
The Tamale Place is super! I love the tamales in green sauce! Our daughter is a freak for their tamales! Looks like a hole in the wall, but it is great. The Tamale selection is limited but the tacos selection is unlimited. Have fun!
Worthy of a pilgrimmage!. Absolutely delicious. Sweet corn, spicy meat, fresh fresh fresh!!
I'm salivating just thinking about it!
Great food. If you can get past their ordering/payment procedure. Carne Asada tacos oh yeah baby.
My dad loved the beef with chipotle sauce tamale. He used to have friends he would get tamales from every year but hadn't found good ones since we moved here. Now he has! The chips and salsa and white cheese dip we're also great!
Awesome food! The half tortas are huge and delish. Loved the speedy service and enjoyed our meal outside in the sunshine!
I don't usually like tamales but these were really good! I had the chicken verde tamale and it had big, tasty chunks of chicken. Alone, it was a tad salty, but with rice and their delicious salsa, it tasted perfect. My fiancé had the beef tamale with red sauce and it was perfectly seasoned. The pumpkin tamale was excellent. It tasted like the best pumpkin pie filling ever. Definitely worth a try. We even got 2 pints of their salsa to take home.
Great little place...everything I've ate here has been good! Love the taco's!!!
They are not afraid of heat. I have had the Tamale place on my wish list for a while. Last weekend, I convinced my family to go with me. Once we arrived, it was not hard for me to decide which part of the menu to order from -- the tamale one, of course. I was not going to trek all the way across town to a place called The Tamale Place and order anything else.
I was in a hot and spicy mood, so I ordered the Hot & Spicy Pork, and the Chipotle Beef. The tamales are beautiful when you first get them. Expertly wrapped in the corn husk and artfully tied to hold them together.
On my first bite into the Hot & Spicy Pork I could see that they were not afraid of heat here! I'm not sure what pepper they used, but the spicy heat was front and center. The masa added its own unique countering richness.
Next I tried the Chipotle Beef tamale. The heat was front and center again, but not overpowering. Besides the heat, chipotles also have a nice smokey flavor. I thought this flavor went deliciously with the shredded beef filling. I thought maybe the beef had become a touch dry and could have used a bit more salt. However, those were both minor foibles.

Wow...I heard so much about this place I had to try it. YUM! Fast, friendly, reasonable, and something truly unique and authentic. Definitely recommend!
Delicious food, worth every penny, thanks for a great experience
Yum. Live the salsa! Had a veggie tamale.
Best Around!. I drive 45 minutes at 6:30 in the morning for the Tamales! BEST THIS SIDE OF THE MISSISSIPPI!
Fantastic Food. I live very close to this place, so my boyfriend and I come here all the time. The food here is so beyond delicious, I don't know how anyone could walk away disappointed. I'm not a huge fan of tamales but my bf is obsessed with their tamales. I used to get the spicy chipotle chicken nachos and they are phenominal and it is a large portion size. A few months ago I became a vegetarian and was worried about their options b/c I had never paid attention before, but their black bean and cheese tacos are the best Mexican vegetarian dish I've had so far - anywhere. Not to mention their awesome beans and their rice... I don't really like rice and NEVER eat it when I get Mexican elsewhere, but I can't get enough of it here. Soo good. Just writing about it is making want some... If you come here you will leave with a very full belly and very satisfied.
Fantastic. I did not know a tamale to taste so good. Don't miss this one....
Great food...side show included!. After watching the show on the Food Network and reading the reviews, I knew I wanted to try this place. Pros...The food was very authentic..or at least authentic for Indy. Tamales were awesome. They sell them as fast as they make them, and they keep the availability board current.
Very large portions, and its all fresh. Cons....very small seating area. Only 8 tables that seat 4 people. You wait in line to order your food, then you stand against the wall and wait for a table to open up. I was awestruck by the amount of people that flowed through this small restaurant. It reminded me of a small deli we went to once in New York. It was very loud and noisy. I would recommend carryout. Defitently not for a large group, and you better eat fast! Not a place for a relaxing meal. With all that said..will I go back...you bet. The food is worth it and it was a side show while you ate!
Try the tacos.. Been there many times. Large selection of tamales, but get there early if you can. Sometimes the line is long & the wait can take up most of your lunch hour. They do a lot of business & sometimes they run out of certain tamales.
I prefer the tacos which are large & cheap! You can pick your own toppings. Messy & greasy but very good.
Limited seating, try take out.
MMMMM!!!! GO THERE!!!. The chipotle chicken, verde chicken, poblano beef, really it doesn't matter what you order, it is all delicious! Let's go, and pass the Tapatio!
Fresh and good. The food was very fresh and tasty. Crowded and loud environment, but the food was definitely worth it. Also, it was cheap. Only 3.25 for a tamale. I will go back.
Great food - fantastic salsa!!
I recently stumbled onto this restaurant. Now, it's one of my favorite lunch spots on the west side. With an amazing variety of flavors and a salsa that makes any day better. Add to that a quick turn over and a great price you get the perfect lunch spot.
Great Tamales!!!. The hot and spicy pork was great!!!! Had just the right heat!
We Love You Tamale Place!
Arrive early!. We arrived pretty late for the 'lunch rush' - around 1:45p. There were limited options left on the menu!
So- I guess what they do is make a certain # of each item on the menu. Then they post how many of each item are left. As the rush comes, they keep an accurate count of what is available on a white board near where you order. Great system!
Food was tasty & quickly served.
Chips were good- we got 3 tamales (incld one dessert tamale) and were wishing we'd gotten there earlier to get other options.
all in all- good food
Spicy Chicken Chipolte Taco. Best taco ever. The char on the chicken and crispness of the cheese play perfectly with the spicy salsa and fresh cilantro. Go there for the tamales but don't forget one or two of these!
Having left Texas over 25 years ago, I have been searching for real tamales. The search is over! The Tamale Place rocks!!! Great masa, great fillings and great service.
FRIGGIN' DELICIOUS! I seriously dream about their tacos, awaiting the day I will be on the westside and able to go there. These are authentic but better... I always get the chicken tacos with cheese, cilantro, and onion, and the tiny cups of sauce for dipping (or drinking, you know, whatever). My mom swears by their nachos and tamales but I seriously can't be bothered by any other food when their tacos are in my vicinity. I hear they have an actual sit-down restaurant now and I can't wait to try it. Definitely worth your time!!!
AMAZING!. My husband and I aren't huge tamale fans so, we both got the chipotle chicken tacos. They were sooooo incredibly good! The cheese is melted to the tortilla and then flipped over and cooked on the skillet until it gets a nice crust with oh-so-much flavor. Then they're topped with just onions and cilantro and a lime wedge on the side. So simple and so delicious. We definitely will be returning!
Spicy goodness. Spicy, simple, delicious. Cheap, no frills. Arrive early they sale out fast. Different types daily. authentic. We used to pick up in morning and save for lunch. Sometimes they may have day old tamales. Great deal. Order a few varieties and split.
On our trip to Indianapolis we visited ““The Tamale Place”, which is inside a small strip mall on Rockville Road and features authentic Mexican fare. They make their own Masa the way it has been done hundreds of years; they boil bags of white corn with a a bit o
...The Tamale Place is also serving up delicious dessert tamales, including my favorite apple with pecans that is like eating apple pie in a corn husk, and the chocolate tamale that is somewhere between a brownie, chocolate cake, and mind blowing! While you will find that The Tamale Place makes a great variety of tamales, they are a labor intensive, handmade dish therefore they do not make all of them everyday; next to the cash register you will find a marker board with the day's choices and a number indicating how many are left, so I suggest getting there early in the day before they run out! If you aren't a fan of tamales, but still love good Mexican food, there IS still something here for you; we also love the tacos, they make their own tortilla's with the same masa they use for the tamales and have several different delicious protein options like my personal favorites carne asada a
Of our three picks, beef was the favorite simply because it had the most kick. I ordered the chicken for myself and it was delicious, too...
FLOE was headed to lunch before a quick trip to the zoo today, so it sounded like a good time to try out The Tamale Place on the near west side. In a strip mall off of Rockville lies this very modest, clean and easy "dive". Since it's scheduled to be featured on Triple D this May, FLOE had high hopes and were admittedly a little giddy to give it a go. Upon walking in, we were pleasantly surprised by the eclectic clientele. It's always a good sign to see natives of the cuisine, but this was a true melting pot. We were met at the counter by a very helpful and patient staff member. She explained how to order and approximately how much food would be enough for the 4 of us. Since they call themselves The Tamale Place, FLOE decided to forgo the tacos and nachos (although both looked excellent!) -- today it was all about the tamales. It should be noted that tamales are not a made-to-order item. Therefore the staff makes a set number of each per day and when they're out, they're out. While it'
The food was good. It’s tasted very authentic. I tried the torta sandwich which was very good for it being my first time having it. It was a bit messy to eat for a sandwich but was good to eat. The tamales were good but not the best I ever had. In my opinion they need a little more sauce. The service was great and it is someplace I would return in the far future.
We have come to this place 2 years a row while coming to Indianapolis for races. It has not disappointed at all.
The staff are friendly and the tamales are delicious and if wanted, spicy.
The tamale selection is fantastic, and they are spectacular tasting. The downside is that they are $5 each with no discounts for large quantities. Lighting fast service. Super clean. Not a sit-down restaurant vibe but a descent atmosphere for an eat-it-and-go lunch spot.
Love their tamales. My favorite is the chicken with green salsa Verde, beef in red sauce, sweet corn and cheese, and the steak tortas (which is huge and could be split between two people or saved for another meal). The service was fast and they had tons of options. It is recommended that you call ahead because they can and do run out of specific flavors.
Love THE Tamale place. Some of the best tamales I've ever had. Great tacos too. I come to Indy 2-4x per year for racing events or trade shows and make it a point to stop here at least once every trip.
I had the one tamale combo. Absolutely excellent! I ordered the hot and spicy pork, half/half rice and beans, and the hot salsa. So much food at a reasonable price. Definitely one of the best tamales I’ve ever had, and the salsa was great too.
Beautifully wrapped tamales that were like flavorful presents 🎁 from them for us to enjoy. From the beautiful wrapped presentation, to how amazing the corn 🌽 masa tasted, to how flavorful & spiced up to perfection the meat fillings was., It was one of the best tamales I have ever tried, including California or Mexico. The people in the big kitchen behind the counter, work really hard to produce an exceptional product for us to enjoy and be happy. I was watching them the whole time as I was ordering my food.💪🏼👍. The cashier was also really nice and professional.
Best pork tacos I have ever eaten! I dont like tamales but my husband has loved every one he has gotten from this restaurant. Generous portions for a great price! Service is always fast and friendly. Order is always correct. Only downside is the eating area is very small.
I have been coming here for a few years now and I love the Tamales , they are second best , only to my sister's family recipe which was passed down from my nana
" grandmother" which are spicyer, but that's back in ARIZONA ....
The food is mid. There weren’t many vegetarian options so I got black bean and cheese which was loaded with cheese. It wasn’t amazing but good enough to satisfy my needs. The chips and guac were pretty good.
Beef with red sauce tomale was very good also enjoyed the pork taco.
They have the absolute best tamales in town!! My family loves them. We still come all the way from the Southside just for their delicious tamales. Plus they have other things on the menu. So there's always something for the whole family. If you like heat try the spicy chicken chipotle tamale it's so delicious. And if you've got kiddos who don't like so much heat, then I'd say try chicken and green tamale!! But they're wonderful, and hope they never change! Obviously they're doing something right. They've been right there on Rockville Rd. Since as long as I can remember. Even when they were in the old building. And I hope they always will be!! If you're a foodie, then give them a try! You won't regret it! I promise!
Awesome Food! We are here at least two times per week., There food is always made fresh, never had a bad meal!! try their breakfast too - prepared fresh when you order!
I’m lucky enough to visit Indianapolis for work from the UK regularly, and any trip without a visit to the Tamale Place is a disappointment (not that I miss the opportunity often!).
The tacos are my favourite and I think about them a lot when back home.
I came in at 10:45 to beat the rush. Service was fast and friendly. I hardly had time to admire how clean and bright the place is, because my food was ready so quickly! I love the bustle of the kitchen cranking out all the delicious tamales. I got beef in red sauce, chicken in green sauce, sweet corn & cheese, and apple pecan. All delicious!
This is an excellent place for lunch. The food is great with lots of items to choose from. I have only had the tamales and they are excellent. They have plenty of different types to choose from: beef, chicken, pork along with different sauces. They do have a sit down area but it is a little small so when they get busy it is really crowded. The service is always fast and the food is always fresh.
I have been told to check this place out while in Indianapolis. I finally had my chance yesterday. The menu was a little confusing. I had no idea that they listed the tamales available and how many they had of each. That is really cool but also it wasn't obvious from the get go. The lady who took my order was friendly and explained that to me when I tried to order a tamale that was out of stock. I took my food to go and didn't get a chance to eat it until I was back in Bloomington. However, my order was exactly what I had asked for and plentiful. The tamale was huge and tasted great. I was also in love with the fresh salsa. I ordered hot salsa and it did have a nice kick to it. Not true "hot" like you can get in places like Texas but better than what I am used to here in Indiana. I was not a fan of the chips however. They were very thick and hard. Not a huge issue, I just used some chips I had at home. I will definitely come back and try other tamales as they had quite an expansive choice of creative tamales.
