Rick's Cafe Boatyard is a fantastic place to visit for a special night out. Rick's has a delightful menu selection and is just as pleasing to the eyes as the palette. The facility is modern and clean. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. We made reservations, asked for a seat overlooking the water, and timed it so we could watch the sun set. It was a fabulous night out that we won't soon forget. I'd highly recommend Rick's Cafe Boatyard.

My sister took me here for my birthday lunch and It was delicious, amazing!! Our waitress recommended the pork chops meal , she was on point with that one. I told my sister we would be going back when I visit again. The mushrooms were just right. I wish the plate was bigger. And the catfish was fried hard to my sister liking. This place gets A 💯. The scenery is beautiful to sit out there and eat with your love ones.

Rick’s Cafe Boatyard has been on our list of date-night restaurants to check out for a long time. We finally made it and we’re happy we did. Even with some construction work happening, the atmosphere was nice. They had several gluten-free options for us to choose from. We chose bacon wrapped scallops and shrimp tacos (see the photos), and it was all delicious. Our server was great… very attentive, friendly and helpful.

The food was great. The service was good. The atmosphere is amazing....we sat overlooking the water. The mix drinks were delicious. The prices were good. I highly recommend coming here.

A great place to go for a scenic dinner and fun drinks.
Going here makes you feel like you're not in landlocked Indiana. Being on the big reservoir you can see activity on the water and the sailing club across the way. It's a great setting.
The wait staff is awesome and very attentive. They know the menu well and made some recommendations for us on what to order.
The drinks were amazing and fun. They give you that vacation feel.
The food came out piping hot and tasted great as well. My only complaint was that the portion size for the fish and chips was a bit small.
It's possible to have dinner for a decent price but if you get drinks and steak or something, the bill will definitely add up.
They also have a kids menu that looked pretty decent.

Rick’s Cafe Boatyard is a gem on the water. Worth a trip to the west side of Indianapolis for great atmosphere, great views, and delicious food. Even though it was busy on a Friday night, we were able to get a table for 3 immediately. Our server Cody was friendly, courteous, helpful, and gave me a great recommendation for my meal. I had the Seared Salmon with asparagus and puréed sweet potatoes. My daughter had the Chicken Parmesan. It was a large portion, I would say enough for two people to share. My son had the kids Chicken Strips meal. Everyone enjoyed their food. Thank you for a great night out with the kiddos.

The view is breathtaking the services very accommodating. I had the crab Pizza. My wife and daughter shared the fisherman's catch. My son had the pepperoni pizza. My other son had this weird salmon and my mom had the catfish. I only took a picture of the appetizer with the calamari, the crab Pizza, the creme brulee and the brownie dish. I took more pictures but I did not want to include them in the review because I had me and my family in it. I was pleasantly pleased it gets a little bit pricey but the quality is stupendous. This was a phenomenal way for me to celebrate my birthday. I definitely plan on coming back here for a date night with my wife.

My family & I gathered to celebrate a birthday & like always everything was fantastic! I had the crab cakes again & they were delicious. I especially enjoyed the crime brûlée, this evenings special flavor was pistachio. All their mashed potatoes are Yukon gold which I enjoyed. Rick’s have a gray atmosphere & great views of the water. My children loved looking at the boats & water all around us. Service was great! Can’t wait to come back!

We really enjoyed Rick's Boatyard. Just our first visit. We ate outside undercover of a light rain. Very good food and service. The price was much more reasonable than I thought. We will go back again.

My favorite app is the baked goat cheese. I get the steak salad with blue cheese & its so good. I recommend getting dressing on the side cause it was super drenched. I sat outside overlooking the water. Destiny was my server & she was very sweet and attentive!

Awesome and fresh seafood , always fresh and delicious, always hot and nicely presented . The ambiance is nice, the staff is friendly and helpful and the hygiene is always up to standards.

Food was great! The seafood chowder the best in Indiana. The special today was King crab flat bread. So yummy! Great service and beautiful view. Feels like you're in Florida somewhere today! It's a new favorite spot. Great menu!

What a beautiful location on the perfect day. The restaurant for brunch on Sunday then out on the deck and listen to some live music and enjoy the view.

Food was good, and super fast. I picked this restaurant off zomato as we were passing through, so i fogured we give it a shot. The patio is nice, and great service.

This was our third visit to Rick's and probably our last. The past experience was really good so we were ready to dine there again. The evening was beautiful and we enjoyed the view of the reservoir and this wonderful experience ended with this view. Servers were not well trained and our food was really " lean cuisine"/ McDonalds style except for the price. We ordered calamari and it was really good but our entrees had no taste and were cold. We usually give 20% to our servers when we go out but we just could not bring ourselves to pay so much this time. We really do not think that our server even tried to be nice; he definitely didn't know the proper etiquette. We were joking among ourselves that this meal was the one that would definitely deserve " dine and dash". We were very disappointed and even considered speaking to the manager but instead decided to write a review. It is too bad because this restaurant used to have a reputation of one of the best in town.

Go in warm weather for the deck view. We had a great sunday afternoon at Rick's, sat inside but still enjoyed the view of Eagle Creek. Too hot outside. Our server, Savannah, did a great job. It did not seem crowded, however, if you were to put all of the people inside and outside in one room, it would probably be full. The restaurant is large. I had the Linguine Roma, which was very good. My wife had a Lobster Tail with rice and slaw, The lobster was just okay, the slaw was very bland but the rice was excellent. We like this place and will return. The view moved it from a 3 to a 4.
SOMETHiNG MONUMENTAL
It's such a beautiful place. We sat outside and enjoyed the rumblings of drunken boaters, while jazz music played inside. The menu had lots to offer for a normal diner or even vegetarians that eat seafood. I'm not one of those vegetarians, but I was still able to find something to eat. I still can't get over the view. It really added to the experience. I love this place. Rick's Cafe Boatyard 4050 Dandy Trail Indianapolis, IN 46254 (317) 290-9300 http://www.rickscafeboatyard.com/

Great find. On the road for a business trip. We did a Web search for some where to eat in Indianapolis. What an awesome dinner, everything is fresh. My husband got a steak not only was it a nice size but said it was a real steak. He eats alot of steak when we go out to eat and usually complains as to how packaged it taste. You will not be disappointed. We will be back.

Don't eat dinner there. Ricks is close to our house so we have been there several times. Always take out of town guests there. Mostly for lunch. This time we took guests to dinner. We ordered the fisher mans platter at $36. Lobster was not done squishy raw. Sent it back and it came burned and dry. The scallops and 2 shrimp were over cooked . I think they were broiled. Salmon was good, so was the coconut rice, not a big serving though. No salad or vegetable. Later I noticed other tables had bread. We did not. Our friend ordered a tenderloin sandwich, said it was "ok"<br/>I was embarrassed after saying how great the food was there. What happened to the quality and quantity? Great place for drinks on the water and an appetizer or lunch. Forget the pricy dinner.

Overpriced - SHADY Managing. Went to Rick's with a great deal from Fox 59. thinking we could get a nice meal out without paying full price. The waiter was great in checking with us and answering all of our questions, but was obviously trained to not inform guests of the price of waaaaay overpriced items. While the grouper was tasty, it was definitely not worth the money to come with a small piece of fish, some rice and some sort of really earthy, grass tasting "salad". What was really infuriating was the crab legs. Granted, they're priced as "market price", but when they have it on the menu and you're asked if you want one or two when you order and you respond that you just want what's on the menu, and the waiter says, "oh, so two" doesn't seem like a reasonable response when that apparently costs $60. That included a few crab legs and NO SIDES! If we had known that was what we were getting, we would have ordered something much more reasonably priced (although I'm not really sure anything was reasonably priced based on what we got). We usually purchase local discounts to try restaurants cheaply and have found many favorites by doing so, but this is definitely on our never return list!

Terrible service, incompetent waiter, cold food -- avoid. Rick's Café Boatyard has been going downhill for years. Today, however, was probably the final straw for us as this was, by far, the worst restaurant experience we've had there.<br/><br/>We arrived at noon and were seated on the patio. We were given two brunch menus and a lunch menu. After sitting for several minutes with no one even taking our drink orders, the waiter finally showed up and took our drink orders. Several minutes later, we finally got the drinks. We proceeded to order, and he told us that we couldn't order off the lunch menu until two. We asked him to explain why we were given a lunch menu and he mumbled that he didn't know. So, we both ordered off the brunch menu and away he went.<br/><br/>Probably 15 or 20 minutes later, the same waiter took an order from the table next to us. You guessed it -- they were ordering off the lunch menu. We had spoken with these people earlier and told them what the waiter told us, and they told the waiter to come and check with us again. Why didn't the waiter check when we asked why we couldn't order off the lunch menu before?!?!?! Anyway, he came over and my wife changed her order and ordered an appetizer as well. A couple of minutes later, my order of Eggs Chesapeake finally arrived. The food was not hot and was slightly warm at best. <br/><br/>A few minutes later, the "manager" came to ask us if everything was OK. My wife explained the situation and he didn't really seem to care. Right after he left, her sandwich arrived but there was no appetizer. 10 minutes or so later, the waiter stopped by and said he cancelled our order because they only had "trout dip," not the artichoke crab dip. What the heck? WHERE is "trout dip" on their menu? Our waiter then asked my wife if she wanted another beer. I answered for her -- NO -- because we just wanted to get out of there and it was taking the bozo 10 to 20 minutes to refill drinks the way it was.<br/><br/>Seriously, how can a restaurant survive like this? We've been 3 times over the last year or so and two of the three times have been very disappointing.
Roger Unger
Service was marginal, meal seemed warmed not fresh. Crab cake was size of a small scallop and full of shells. I should have known better, this far from the ocean. View was great, though. No thank you.
Kevin
Disappointed. We had a reservation for 15. We arrived on time. We were seated after more than a half hour wait. After being seated we were greeted immediately by our server. After ordering drinks we waited almost 20 minutes to get them. Then after a long wait and starving finally got our food order taken. I had to approach a waiter who wasn't ours just becaus ours was no where and I needed a refill on my soda. Our food arrived quickly .The waiter got all of our food on the wrong bills so after a half hour or so finally got it straight, overall I was disappointed with the service.<br/>The food was pretty tasty. Overall I would give them a 6 out of 10.

Great food, yes but safety of your vehicle, no!! I attended a baby shower that was held at Rick's & when I came back to my car, the passenger door side was smashed. I went back inside & alerted the manager & he was very rude to tell me that there's nothing he can do. I was not trying for him to pay for the damage, I would only like to inform him what happened and I asked if there's any security camera and he acted like he's not interested about my concern. I'm not going back there anymore not because of what happened to my car but because of the rudeness of the manager.

Best Sunset on Water. I have been going to Rick's since the late 90's...then II lived in Bloomington and Nashvile for 10 years since 1998...came back in 2009 to Indy. I have the great fortune to live 7 minutes from Rick's. Being a widow since 2004...I have met so many wonderful new friends that are regulars at Rick's. It has had its down falls in service and food at times...overall...sitting out on the deck being on Eagle Creek is just awesome, relaxing and meeting up with extended family friends so to speak. We are all like family from Rick and his wife, the servers, band members that play on a regular basis and most of all friends you meet on a regular basis. Last winter...we would meet inside the bar area and watch our Colts and listen to the wonderful live music. Over the last two years...being single...I met up with wonderful new friends that embraced me to come aboard their pontoons or sail boats with other mutual friends. We can get rather rowdy at times on the deck, inside and on the water....us Regulars will always have new people join us and develop new friendships. I have been on Geist. Not the same as far the the wonderful loving people who come to Rick's. If you had a not so nice experience at Rick's...come back! If you see my face ... feel free to come and up and say hi Shel New-Ritter .

Business Dinner Experience. Twice a year I come to Indy and take one of my best customers out to dinner. I like to try different restaurants and last trip I came upon Ricks. The service was outstanding. Our server extremely open to accommodating our special requests. The food was awesome. They even changed the entre from chicken to fish for me without question. The calamari appetizer was very different and the best I have every had. I am returning to Indy in October and my customer has requested we come to Ricks again. Definitely on my list of Best Restaurants!!!

Don't go here. For our 4 year wedding anniversary, I chose Ricks Cafe Boatyard because my wife really wanted to eat there. So after making a reservation 3 days in advance, we get to the restaurant and they have no record of the reservation despite my confirmation number. From there the wait was an 1 hour. Needless to say I hope the owner goes bankrupt because after reading the many reviews online, it's very probable.
Tracy
Was looking for a nicer restaurant after the Brickyard close to out hotel and found Ricks with the help of the hotel staff. Service was great and the food was well worth what you pay. Will definitely come again

Can't keep food on hand for the weekend. Today, for the first time of many visits to this location, I had a less than ideal experience. Folks who frequent here are advised to call ahead (especially on weekends) to make sure their favorite menu item is indeed available (in stock) All day I was looking forward to my favorite menu item but when I ordered it, I was told they are out it will be 30 mins before they can get some in. I didn't mind the wait and went ahead and ordered anyway. Then 15 mins later they come out and say well it may be up to an hour before they get some in. Well, I've ordered now, I may as well be in for the long haul. Then, our waitress comes out and tells me it may be longer than an hour. I asked her to just give it to me straight......"well they probably won't get here tonight." FABULOUS!! Why didn't you just tell me that to start with?.....oh maybe because you wanted me to order anyway so you could at least get my money for the meal secured. Real nice! Whoever is in charge there, be sure to thank the dummy in the kitchen that is in charge of ordering food for the weekend for making what would have otherwise been a great meal, less than great! You'd think that one of your top, if not THE TOP appetizer would be kept in ample supply, but oh no, not at Rick's!!

This place needs help. Sadly, this restaurant used to be much better than it is now. Food is only okay, service is poor, could use an update to interior and decor. Rick's can get by with overcharging for food because most people come there for the view of the (man made) reservoir, and it's the only restaurant in that area. <br/>My food came to me with a long hair on the plate. After sending it back, I sat there with nothing to eat while the others in my party ate their food before it got cold. Our waitress did NOTHING to compensate for the gross hair in my food, nor did she apologize. For a restaurant that charges as much as it does for their food, the wait staff should be dressed nicer (not t-shirts with cheesy messages). Rick's used to be much better, but unfortunately, I won't be back.<br/>I keep thinking about our dining experience last week and it just makes me angry. Wish I could get my money back!
Donna
Fish chowder. Last Wednesday I was looking torward to having lunch with a friend at Rick's Boart Yard. It had been some time since I had been there but I remembered it as good. It was not. The base of the chowder was a thick flour tasting white sauce with no other flavors. A cheif who cares about his food would not let this leave the kitchen

Great Place!. I went here for Valentine's Day with my fiancé, I was a little nervous at first because I had read a lot of the reviews about this place on open table. My fiancé had been there before and kept saying it was good so we made a reservation. When we pulled up it was beautiful right on the lake. I started to get excited, I walked in we got seated immediately. We started to go up stairs and I got scared because I had read reviews saying going upstairs was just being put in the corner and that it wasn't as nice. As soon as you get up there it is nice and open but we asked to sit right on the window so we could see the lake and it was great and private. I would eventually like to sit downstairs sometime but I am not upset about sitting upstairs. I had also read bad things about service and we never had a problem wit hit at the restaurant. Now no this isn't the finest proper service but we had no problems and our server was excellent, everyone was so nice I can't complain. We ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer, while we were waiting we got the bread and butter and it was very good. Then the crab cakes came out and oh my they were amazing. They had so much crab in them it was truly a cake made out of crab. We then decided to get things we both wanted and split our dinners. We ordered the Scottish Atlantic Salmon and the Shrimp and Scallop Linguine. Both were to die for. The salmon was so tender and flavorful it also came with some of the best mashed potatoes I had ever had. The pasta was great and my fiancé said next him he just wants that. The shrimp in the linguine were also huge. So after reading reviews about this place and being nervous about it I absolutely loved it. It has to be one of my new favorite restaurants I cannot wait to go in the summertime and sit outside. I would recommend to give this place a try!

Great seafood. This place is pretty pricey, so my husband and I only go about once a year. The calamari is by far the best I have ever had and I am pretty sure they fly their seafood in every day. Staff is friendly, atmosphere is festive, and it is one of the only ̈waterfront ̈restaurants I have been to in Indy.
Yellow Moth
Great Summer Hangout. We went to Rick's two time this past sumer and both times we sat outside on the deck. Service was great; attentive and friendly. Drink menu isdecent. Great place to sit outside and relax in the summer. We will be back.

Great view and wonderful food:)

I have never had anything bad here. However we always sit on the bar deck and service is a little slow. The atmosphere and location is absolutely beautiful!

Don't waste your time. I don't know why, but we go back to Rick's every year thinking that it might be better than in the past, but we're always disappointed! The view is lovely, but the service is the WORST. The patio is always full, but the servers don't really care if you have to wait and wait and wait. The food is mediocre, nothing wow. We took our kids the other night (teenage) and we were put at the worst table in full sun. Took a long time for our waiter to approach and another 10 minutes just to bring water. When he was taking our order he was more concerned about talking to another waiter who passed by. Of course someone else brought our food out and our waiter never even stopped by to ask how everything was. When it came time to tip, I didn't even want to leave 15% but of course I did. I have to remember to NEVER go there again, no matter how good it might sound!

New Favorite. I have been to Rick's several times in the last three years, and it never disappoints. The scenery, atmosphere, and service are outstanding. I have to question how the patrons below have spent $70 on lunch unless they ordered several margaritas. Rick's has a very reasonably priced lunch menu, and our bill for four was under $70. Most recently I ordered a special, an ahi tuna burger served with fresh fruit. Superb! I will be returning more frequently!
Nancysmiths55
Cafe. Love the scenery is nice

SEVER SUCKS. Me and some friends went there for dinner our server was very rude we never knew her name we sat for 15min before she came to see if we wanted app or was ready for our meal when we got ready to leave i asked for a manager then i looked up and she was conforting my wife the boss act like he really did not care if this is what you get at ricks i would be better off going to white castle

Mixed Review. Things I love about Rick's:<br/>*Patio Deck Dining<br/>*Live Jazz Music<br/>*Chicken Parmigiana <br/>*Watching the sun set over Eagle Creek Reservoir<br/><br/>Things I don't love about Rick's:<br/>*Weird table configuration<br/>*Weak, watered-down drinks<br/>*Overpriced food<br/><br/>I think I love the idea of Rick's; romantic outdoor dining overlooking the water with live jazz music playing in the background. Unfortunately the reality doesn't quite match up to the idea.

Food wasn't a show stopper but the Patio Deck view of the Resevoir was!!!. I've never really been a big fan of the food here. the service however is always top shelf.<br/><br/>This is a very neat place to take friends or have a destination riding a motorcycle with the wife. The patio bar is arguably the best in the city or state. The live band was just setting up when we arrived and was pretty good. They sang 70's to contemporary music at a decent volume.<br/><br/>Wife and I tried the Rico's dip. Wasn't overly impressed by the dish. The rationed dip was buried under the few scant chips that accompanied it. The cheese was already set up and took a second chip or spoon to scoop. Refer to the picture for yourself. Regardless, the patio deck and scenery more than made up for it on our motorcycle stop.<br/><br/>Try it for yourself and decide!

Like the atmosphere, but the cheap tables and chairs and mediocre food have made me go elsewhere. I'd consider it for a happy hour but nothing else anymore. Look up reviews for other Rick's locations and you'll see a trend. What a shame, this place could be so great but the owner must be happy making the money he does thanks to the waterfront.
WestSideFoodie
Overpriced. The food is good, but the food and view don't equal that high of prices. I can get a better prime rib at Outback for 10 bucks less.
Eric
So much potential. Went here for a nice evening date. We sat there for at least 10-15 minutes before we even were asked for drinks. Wasn't so bad as we passed time with conversation but that is unacceptable. The last time I came to Ricks however service was good. Sitting outside with the view is unmatched in Indianapolis as far as I know there is nothing else like it. I love this aspect of Rick's. The food is good but very overpriced. For the prices I expect great food. Would be good place for early drinks if you don't mind those prices either. Overall I am undecided. There are really good things and really bad things about this place and I love it and hate it. But it has sooo much potential.
Kathy Fanning
Been here an hour and only seen our waitress once. Food was so so. Won't be back!
Kenny Rachon
Save ur monies. This place is nice for a beer or two outside on a nice day. <br/>But the food is below average at best. Save your money for dinner and go somewhere else. If it wasn't for the outside atmosphere this place would not make it a month.
Jason Rumbaugh
Hadn't been in over 10 years. My wife had never been, so we went for dinner. I didn't mind the prices, until the food came to the table. The Artichoke Crab dip was "ok" as the appetizer. I ordered the "house specialty" Talapia and Shrimp dinner, shrimp was good. Talapia was bland, veggies, bland, rice was spicy and bland. I barely ate anything and the waitress never asked how the food tasted. My wife's catfish was not good either, she enjoyed her French Fries. So $70.00 down the drain and we both left hungry because we didn't want to finish.
Rod.ruger
High Priced, Low Value, Glitter. Absent the deck and view, probably few would eat here. Stop in, have a beer, leave. Check the menu for prices and assume that the portions will be niggling and the taste average, at best. The service is provided by kids who are OK, but hardly professional. Rick's is the quintessence of an establishment supported by those who have little taste and will pay anything for "average" just to be out and be seen. I don't get it and I like good bars and restaurants. Save your money.
Chief
Highly unrecommend. I went for the first time to this place. What a waste of money. Food was so so, service not much better. My complaint went no where. Too noisy to talk to anyone at my table. The only thing this place is good for is a beer on the deck in the summertime, and then thats pronably overpriced. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!
MattnStacey
Overpriced and mediocre service. Prime rib was tough and too fatty.
ThumbsupThumbsdown
Not for Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey breast was dry and much too salty.I left half the portion on my plate. What a disappointment-Thanksgiving dinner where neither of us wanted to take home leftovers.
IndyGirl1005
Meh...I'll Pass. To me, Rick's is outrageously overpriced for the type & quality of the food. I can cook more delicious food with similar ingredients in my own kitchen for the fraction of the price, & not have to tolerate a pompous wait staff that seem a little overly proud to be serving such overworked food. You are truly paying for pretty scenery, and that is only if you can score a window table during the winter months. If you were a total yuppie in the 1980's though, it might be your "most favorite place ever"
Mariposa
Ehh.. RIck's is alright, nothing to rave about. For the price, I'll likely never return. Lunch for two was $70, as I recall, and for that price, I can think of some WAY better options.
Jen
Great for a date night!. Great food! Mostly seafood, but they also have steak and pork chops for the couple where only one person likes seafood. I especially like their pasta w/shrimp entrees. Their clam chowder is pretty good, too. We've always had excellent service here as well!
Benny Martin
My Own Paradise!. My favorite place coming to Indianapolis, and I come here often since we also have a house here. The gentleman that served us was friendly, knowledgeable and..very patient. Polite, pleasant, charming..gee I forgot the food! Very tasty pork chops and very good soup. The view reminds me of my dear country, The Philippines. If Ricks Cafe Boatyard could only open a branch there, that would be perfect! And I wish he'll open one for every island we have there---7,400 total. He will have to open one up first in this summer capital city in the Philippines---Baguio City, located in Mountain Province. Please check cityofpines.com and see for yourself why. Built by the americans and now a favorite tourist's spot.
James F Eckart
The view is great. The service was timely, but our waitress was a hag. Had the tilaia and shrimp, both of which were over cooked.

While in town. We ate there while in town visiting friend's... Was nice sitting on the lake front on a cool evening with few bugs... (Don't get that at home much.)<br/><br/>Food and drinks were good as well...

If you like great food and atmosphere. If you like dining with a water view (inside or out), like awesome view and atmosphere you'll like Rick's. Not a place to eat everyday for sure, but you do get what you pay for at Rick's.

$14 for 3 small pieces of Tuna?. It appears that Rick's Cafe Boatyard is feeling the effects of the Recession.<br/><br/>We have always ordered the Sashimi appetizer every time we go to Rick's, and every time there has been plenty of fish for the table. This time we had 3 small pieces of Tuna. (NOT WORTH IT)<br/><br/>We decided to skip the rest of the menu and have dinner somewhere else.
Teresa
The food was great and loved the patio atmosphere, but the service was poor. Our appetizer was brought out after the salad, soup, and entrée. We asked the food runner a simple question and he brushed us off and said we'd have to ask our server. The server took our order then didn't check on us till bill time. I just thought there was a lot to improve on service wise.
Amy Lynch
All in all, it was great hanging out on the deck and watching the lovely sunset while sipping a few beers, but I won’t be rushing back to Rick’s anytime soon for the food.

Every summer we usually make it out to Rick's Cafe Boatyard for some drinks and food on their outdoor deck. The service is usually hit or miss the food is always great. (Although this time, not worth the price of admission) I also love the style of the bu
