I've loved Maxine's for forever but this was my first time visiting at City market since they moved here. The menu has been scaled back. No more amazing fried potatoes (they were the Best in town) but the chicken (tenders) and waffle (sweet potato) did Not disappoint!! The two man team was great and so friendly. Definitely spend the extra $1 to get the sweet potato waffle and of course the peach butter is still phenomenal! We got there at 10:30 on a Saturday morning so not too busy and very little wait.
Aaron Brown is a great chef! I have been there twice and both times were amazing. While I was dining I overheard a lady on the phone praising how good his food was. He also had great hospitality. I ordered chicken and waffles, and the time before I had greens, yams, mac and cheese. I also had fries and cornbread. Just know I am never disappointed. One of the best spots in the city.
The chicken was absolutely delicious and the waffles paired very well with the spices from the chicken. The waffles on their own would be too sweet even without syrup. I think the packaging was a little wasteful. The location was under a lot of construction leaving little to no parking. Also I love that there is a lot of grub hub and other delivery services labeled!
A delicious find! Cannot recommend the chicken tenders and waffles enough, if only so that you can experience their peach butter! A+!
My young server was very polite and gave me menu choice options. I chose the waffles and chicken strips with fries. I didn't wait no more than ten minutes. My order was hot and fresh. The cook and server got a 6.50 tip.
Absolutely loved the food!! We arrived close to closing on a Saturday night so it was kind of crowded. Our waitress was very helpful & courteous. It did take a long time for our food to arrive & because we got there so late they were out of macaroni and cheese. However everything else, more than made up for it!! That peach butter was EVERYTHING!! I can understand why they've won so many different awards. There were a lot of chain restaurants in Indianapolis that I can experience at home & wanted to explore local restaurants.....so glad this was on the list!!
We came here for lunch for the 4th of July by coincidence because most shops were closed in observance of the holiday. How lucky were we?! The restaurant was clean & employees very friendly. The restaurant is connected the the Phillips 66, but the entrance is separate for Maxine’s vs. the gas station. This has been one of the best chicken & waffles I’ve ever had! They surely do not make chicken & waffles like this in Utah. Wow!
They have these amazing sweet potato & strawberry waffles that were yummy all by themselves. Peach butter? What? Soooo good! Chicken was juicy & so flavorful. My nephew got the open faced sandwich called to the Max... which I of course tried 😉 very, very good! We all loved our entree’s and our waitress helped our first visit here very exceptional! I did not get her name (darn it) she was so attentive & even gave us suggestions on our meal & where we can come back later to get good seats for some great fireworks 💥 displays! Outside there looked like a few homeless people, but that did not deter us. We will be back for sure! Thank you Maxines’s for the wonderful hospitality!
First and foremost, the address on Google is incorrect for Maxine's. They are located inside at Southwest Corner of the Indianapolis City Market at 222 E. Market St.
I may be biased, but I've heard a lot about this place for many years and kept putting off visiting them until now.
When I approached the counter, I was in such anticipation that I didn't know what to order, so I asked the employee what I should get. He recommended the Sweet Potato Waffle with wings. I fully trusted his word and he was absolutely right.
Initially the waffle was crisp and the sweetness without the syrup was there, yet subtle. I made a mistake by dumping syrup and butter over everything instead of a bite at a time. The chicken came fresh and very hot. The skin was very crispy and the meat was extremely juicy. The combination of the sweet potato with the succulent chicken was an excellent pairing. Maxine's totally lived up to my expectations and am looking forward to their next dish.
AWESOME. My daughter and I came here for the first time 2-17-18. Staff was great, fast service. My daughter ordered Chicken and Waffles and lemonade she said it was amazing i tryed hers and it was, I ordered Smothered fryed chicken, Fryed green tomatoes, and collard greens. Food was fast hot and delicious. We will definitely be back. We had been looking for a soul food restaurant for a long time and finally found one. Thanks staff for the great experience.
At first glance I was not feeling it. A restaurant connected to a gas station... boy was I surprised. The food was great. I had the chicken and waffles with cinnamon. 🤤🤤🤤 if you want good food check them out.
We went to the new location, most definitely would go back. I guess we entered through the main entrance (they are located on the left) Chicken wings and sides are fire.
Heard great things about this place for ages. Finally went and tried it out. It exceeded all expectations! The waffles were so tasty. Grab the seasonal upgrade, it's worth it. The corn bread discs at the start of the meal with the peach butter was definitely a highlight as well. The pan fried chicken was fried to perfection. If you have the time (it says on the menu to allow 45 minutes), it's a sure thing. All in all, it was a great meal.
waffles that I've had, but a trip to Onion Creek in Houston is usually not in the cards...and these are pretty darn close. The atmosphere can get a little congested and the parking situation is horrendous. There's a parking lot in the back, but quite honestly you should just avoid it and find street parking.
Overall the food is awesome, the people are really nice, and the atmosphere is great for families. If you're looking for a trendy brunch spot with mimosas and bloody Mary's this isn't your place, but if you have a hankering for authentic chicken and waffles, for my money, I haven't found any better in town.
It was early and they were not yet open when they saw my wife and I lurking at the front counter. When I inquired when they would open, I was told they would be open in about an hour. The owner must’ve noted the hunger in my voice and stated that if we wanted the Chicken n’ Waffles he could serve us immediately. We got the food and it was spectacular. The chicken was crunchy but not overly breaded. It was seasoned well and moist. The waffle was light and had an amazing texture to it. Topped with their famous peach butter, I didn’t use any syrup. It was a great eating experience.
During our meal we started talking to the owner and the other cook. We discovered that they were not open yet because they were preparing three different catering jobs for a total of about 400 people. While they were still working, they took the time to explain the restaurant’s history and even slipped a sample of yams to us (these are pie worthy waiting on the crust). We discovered that the current owner was an educator (my wife is a 30 year education vet) and he took over the business once the original owner, his grandmother Maxine, feel ill.
The story of the food is worth the trip here BUT the quality of the food and service that is provided is worth your money. I felt a warmth in not only my belly, but in my heart as well. I don’t know if I’ve ever wanted to see an establishment succeed like I want them to. Do yourself a favor and get yourself some of this!
Whenever I get back to Indianapolis, Maxine's is on my list of spots to visit. Chicken and strawberry waffle with peach better...I never even use the syrup. Still just as delicious as when I lived in Indy. Staff was very pleasant and fun while we waited. It's in City Market now - which was very quiet when we visited on a weekday (probably due to the pandemic). Support Maxine's y'all...please keep them open!!
I had the Max Out burger. That thing is a monster. All of the food we had was great. The chicken had a great mix of seasonings and was fresh, hot and crispy. The waffle was fluffy and delicious. The burger...oh my goodness. The burger was out of this world. The chicken gravy har a very unique flavor to it, it was great and had actual pieces of chicken. The burger is a great, cooked to order burger with a healthy amount of steak seasoning. The free cornbread was the only downside. It was overly beat, making the bread tough. It was also over cooked by about 3-5 minutes making it dry. Since it's free though, I didnt let it detract from the review and the main course more than made up for it. I've been coming here for about 10 years and though the recipes and and faces behind the counter may have changed, the peach butter has not. Delicious as always.
The food was so delicious. Three large pieces of catfish, an when I say it was seasoned all the way through my goodness. An dont even let me start on them collard greens. I will be going back when I'm in the area.
