We were in town for work and found this wonderful little gem of a restaurant. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and very welcoming. If I could have, I would have eaten the gumbo until I exploded. This was the best gumbo I have ever eaten. I'm looking for an excuse to come back to town just to have dinner here again.

So I ordered a quart of gumbo with Blue Crabs to go and had planned to share it. I ate the entire quart by myself!!! I usually make my own gumbo from scratch but I no longer have to thanks to Gumbo Girl. It’s the best thing I’ve eaten this year hands down!!!! #satisfiedcustomer

JACKSON FOODIE REVIEW FORMAT: Name of Restaurant: Gumbo Girl Today, Thursday, Feb. 9th 11:30a.m. Overall rating (1-5, 5 being highest): 5+++ Atmosphere: 1-5 5+ Service: 1-5 5+ Food: 1-5 7+++ Tell us what you ate! (see pics) Main Course: 2 people dined. 1. Surf n Turf Gumbo-plenty for two unless you're a total pig and want to get gumbo wasted!! The most perfect rue base I have ever tasted! Hearty, perfectly rich and chocolate brown in color! Boiled chopped okra (no slime!), sasuage, big deveined shrimp, chicken, seasoned generously with just the right amount of pepper heat and stove heat that was chased by the perfect fountain diet pepsi!! Heaven- I suppose! My theory on gumbo is this: it must be cooked, but when it is served, it shouldn't leave you with a scalded tongue/mouth. I'm happy to report...my tongue is fine and my belly is extremely full and happy. 2. Shrimp Tacos~ 3 generously filled with petit shrimp that I usually don't care for, lettuce, tomatoe. I would have preferred to add cheese shreds and sour cream. But listen, they were SO GOOD please don't take that as a complaint, I my personal preference. Dessert: if applicable We were going to split 1 piece of Lemon Pound Cake. Oh my goodness. So good we bought 2 pieces to bring home!!! So good Will you dine there again? Most definitely!! I'm single and will treat myself on love day. Atmosphere: Describe/explain First time there for me and my sister. We were there upon them opening for lunch at 11:28 today. We are blown away!! The decor was awesome. The ambiance was 'breathe and enjoy your lunch'!! So that we did!! There was some old school music, simular to 100.5, playing. So wonderful!! Food: Describe/explain Impeccable! Y'all know, if you're a seafood lover, you know when it's done right. This is done right and then some!!! Everything was cooked perfectly, down to the rice!! At one point, my sister was sharing her gumbo with me. I said I sure hope the hostess doesn't hear me grunting!!! Yes that food was that good!! Service: Describe/explain Again, impeccable. She even allowed me to sample the diet Pepsi prior to purchase. Again, only understood by the diet drink drinkers. Lol. We were greeted with hellos and thank you for dining with us. It was wonderful!! The hostess said she would keep the free refills drinks topped off and she did!! Even offered and gave to go cups!! Overall(I added this category because we all want to know .) I will put it this way: if the food hadn't been excellent, and something I just don't cook for myself at home, I would say it was too pricey. But for the food you see in the pics, 2 drinks and 3 pieces of home made cake, the bill ran $50 including tip. They have regular menu only, no "lunch menu". But please don't let these be a deturrance!! Call-ins are accepted.

The food is excellent. I had the shrimp tacos. They were large and loaded with shrimp and the cucumber sauce that comes with it was excellent. My lunch mate had the gumbo and said it's some of the best he's ever had...and he lived in New Orleans for a year. It's a small restaurant but the atmosphere is great and the service was excellent. I highly recommend this place.

On my birthday March 12th, I wanted to try something different. Everything was amazing. My husband and I enjoyed everything. Will be returning very soon. I had the Steamed Seafood Platter and my husband had the Fried Seafood Platter with Fried Catfish, Shrimp, and Fries!

Delicious, fresh cooked, flavorful food. The menu is a mix of Southern and Cajun and seafood. You can get a hamburger, cabbage, turkey necks, seafood gumbo, chicken & sausage gumbo, red beans & rice, shrimp Alfredo, shrimp tacos, or one of many other delicious choices. On our visit, which was our first, our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I got the house premium gumbo, which was very flavorful, had a good amount of meat in it and was fairly spicy. I'm sometimes leary of restaurant gumbo because most restaurants serve it watery and not that flavorful. But this was exceptional gumbo, obviously made with a thick, dark roux. My wife got the red beans and rice. It was also fairly spicy and flavorful with a good amount of sausage. I sampled her beans and can honestly say they are really good; not watered down nor too thick. The rice in each dish was perfectly cooked. We split a side of cabbage which was by far the best cabbage I've ever had. It had a buttery, seasoned flavor and is cooked with sauteed onions. If you like cabbage you'll love this item. I definitely recommend trying it. My son got the pasta with shrimp. This was large enough to feed at least 2 people and the shrimp were seasoned very well. It came with toasted French bread. For dessert we shared a turtle brownie that had a scoop of ice cream on top. Needless to say we didn't leave hungry. If you're in this area I'd definitely recommend trying this restaurant, they've got something for most everyone's taste. We're from out of town but will frequent this restaurant when we come back through. Definitely does not disappoint. I'd definitely recommend this place to others.

This place is the definition of mom and pop home cooking. The gumbo was hot, fresh, and delicious. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff is great. Super friendly and they take pride in their food. We will come here again for sure.

We were seated and tended to by the owner. The food was great, with seafood that tasted fresh! Great, homey decor and environment. We can’t wait to go back to try more of the menu!

The decor on the outside and the inside is very beautiful. It was my first time eating at the restaurant and I almost walked out. This place is only opened on Thursday thru Saturday. Since I went on a Saturday night, they were out of basically half the menu. I still decided to stay and order something and I was glad that I did. I had the fish tacos and my husband had the red beans and rice. We also had a brownie for dessert. All the food was full of flavor and spicy. The red beans and rice was good but too spicy for my liking. It was my first time trying fish taco but I was very impressed. They were so good with the mild sauce. It was like a sea garden full of flavor. Next time I'll go on a Thursday so I can try more items from the menu

Hands down the best Cajun food in the Jackson area. I was born and raised in New Orleans and have sorely missed the flavors that Gumbo Girl delivers. There are others that come close, but this is the best Cajun restaurant to come to Jackson since I’ve been here. I have had their seafood gumbo as well as their turkey neck surf and turf pot. The spice level was perfect, but the flavors are what blow you away. Many people try to make a rue, but Gumbo Girl nailed it. You’ll be getting your fingers messy to pick off every bit of meat in your bowl, so I hope your date doesn’t mind. The restaurant was very clean, classy, and well decorated. The staff was friendly, and the owner/chef even came out to speak with us for a few minutes. She has a true passion for her cooking. They even have a great to-go business where you can pick up containers of gumbo and more. I will definitely be coming back in the months and years to come. Laissez les bons temps rouler
