Easily one of the best soul food style restaurants I've been to in all of Florida. The fried chicken is great and the servings are very generous. The dessert differs from day to day but are all very delicious - Ansel Ponce Diama
Excellent meal! Still full from earlier this afternoon. If crowds are any indication of the quality of food and service the Soulfood Bistro exemplifies excellence in both. They opened at 11 am there was a line by 11:30 am. I'm in from out of town and I wanted to sample their food for a family catered event , they did not disappoint. My meal was excellent and we will be giving them our catered business in the future
Food is good. I am glad to see there is a wide vary of thing on the menu now. I remember when we opened the cafe there was this burger called the hope of glory. One thing remains and that the chicken recipe. It was a lot of long hours, hardwork and dedication. Glad to have been apart of that and to see it flourish as much as it has. The food is southern and the sides are home cooked what more can I say.
We live in Middleburg, so we seldom get to Normandy, but when we do, we plan to eat at The Soul Food Bistro. Today is our 35th anniversary, so we made plans to have lunch after church at the Bistro. While standing in line, Jean Renee', the manager, came by and welcomed us to the restaurant. We told him it was a special day for us - our 35th anniversary. Jean Renee' insisted on treating us to our meal. We had the pork chops and the fried chicken - and they both were delicious! The veggies were so good, perfectly seasoned. The food is the main draw to the Soul Food Bistro...but the people there make it an even more memorable experience. We'd give the Bistro a ten if the ratings allowed it!
Best soul food in jax by far and startlingly great service. In jax you expect bad service, but this place is world class.
Good Home Cooking. This cafe style bistro is definitely worth a visit for good home cooking. The country fried chicken and fried pork chops are perfectly tender with the moisture locked in. They have a great selection of sides that are fresh and well seasoned. I must recommend the mac and cheese, easily one of the best I've had in a restaurant. The only knock was the speed of service, the girl serving on the line didn't seem up to working and it took several minutes to get moving (only 6 ppl in line). Service otherwise was very friendly and helpful. I noticed that service did speed up as we were eating and additional help was on the line.
First time in Jacksonville. I really love urbanapoon, the restaurant reviews are normally on point; and this time was also spot on! The food was delicious, the fried chicken was very good, and the Mac and cheese was so delightful! What really impressed me was the nice lady who worked there, as we informed her that we were driving back to Louisiana, she was gracious enough to pray with us. I was very impressed with the awesome food and impeccable service!
Do not be deterred by this hidden gems location alongside a mega church. You'll find it nestled inside a shopping center, alongside seemingly church sponsored businesses such as "Glorious Tees", "Eden spa and nails", and "Temple builders gym". All puns aside, the fried chicken is heavenly. Don't hesitate to stop here. The staff is friendly, and the food divine. Some of the best southern cooking I've ever had.
My husband and I was traveling through Jacksonville from Orlando, Florida. We were on our way back to Savannah, GA and we wanted something other than a burger, pizza, or chickwn. My husband remembered that his coworker had told him last year that if we were ever in Jacksonville, to go to Bristro's to eat. MM good is what comes to mind. The food was awesome. I did not have to even add salt or pepper. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My husband and I was still talking about how good the food was miles down the road. I can't wait until our next road trip to Jacksonville, I will try the meatloaf next. Be Blessed
Drove up from Daytona Beach. Had the chicken livers, greens, black eyed peas and of course 'slap yo mama' cornbread! Great seasoning and ham chunks in the greens. Livers cooked to perfection. Service was wonderful. When the adorable waiter brought out my fresh cooked livers, he asked me if I wanted a side of gravy for them. Hell yeah!! Desert was an enormous piece of red velvet cake. Yummy. Absolutely can't wait to find any excuse to go back there soon!!!
Ok do first off. I want to say I like a good clean restaurant. My 1st impression of this place was a good one walking in. I ate and the the food was ok. The prices for the small portions you get are just crazy. Way overpriced. I like a good soul food restaurant and in Jacksonville there aren't many. They need to step their game up, lower their prices and stop using canned food for some items. Best thing like I said was the cleanliness and neatness. Keep it up SFB. I may return if the prices are right.
I was going crazy trying to find somewhere that sold oxtails in my area, but I had too many bad experiences with places on Main St, or the places that had good reviews were closed down. I knew that the only other place I could go was the Bistro. Those oxtails were so delicious. I've been coming here for years, and this was the first time I ever tried them. Bishop McLaughlin needs to stop playing and put one over here near his old stomping grounds.
I started going while i was pregnant and i have been hooked every sense then i think thats where im gonna eat today!!! U guys are the true meaning of soulfood
So far the best soul food restaurant in Jax!!. The food is always amazing!! Wonderful staff and amazing service!! We come here at least once a month!! :)
The best Mac n cheese. They call it "cheesy mac n cheese" and that is exactly what it is, very cheesy. The sweet tea is extremely sweet, so next time, we'll probably ask for half sweet/half unsweet. The dining area and restroom were both very clean.
Great Food. I ate at Potters House for the first time yesterday. My wife and I both got the smothered pork chops, I had the greens and mac and cheese. Overall it was really good and the service was also good and the place was spotless including the restroom. Only warning is that the food is VERY salty. I had a headache all afternoon after eating there and I take BP meds. If you have issues w/ salt you may want to avoid eating here.
Best fried chicken in Jacksonville!! Great sides and cornbread too!

This was some of the BEST soul food that I've ever had!. Thank you Lord for blessing us with The Potters House Soul Food Bistro!!! This was my first time visiting the restaurant, and from first impressions, it was very clean, spacious, and welcoming. I went on my lunch break on a Wednesday, and there were people of all ethnicities, so I figured that The Bistro must have great food, and boy did they ever!!! I had the Baked Chicken Breast and WIng, which was seasoned perfectly and juicey. I had the Mac and Cheese, whcih was creamy, super cheesy, & well seasoned. I had the Fried Cabbage, which was PERFECT; it was sooooo good! I had the Candied Yams and all I can say is HEAVEN! I had the Corn Bread, which tasted better than my Granny's! (sorry Gran). Then I had their Chocolate Cake. This cake was soooo good. It was moist, and as delicious as ever! To top that, the service was excellent! The servers were nice and helpful and seemed happy, even the cashiers were nice. After this experience, The Potters House Soul Food Bistro has a customer for life. I just pray that my next visits will be as pleasant as this one was. I hop they are planning to expand and open more locations, especially on the Northside.
Very Good, will be a regular. We are always on the lookout for good eats not too far from downtown. Potters House is that and then some. Very good food, friendly staff, clean and attractive decor. All around a very pleasing place to eat. I will definitely be back, and it will go in our rotation of lunch venues.
Fried food cafeteria. This is not really a bistro but a cafeteria that serves fried food. I do not really understand the love for this eatery or Southern cuisine in general.
And I did not really taste the element of soul in the dishes. Perhaps eating in a cafeteria style setting solidified this opinion about the food.
Ate here today with my son, he really liked the greens and Mac and cheese. I liked the black eye peas and Chicken, we would go back again even though the prices are high for a cafe style restaurant...
Tasty. The food was tasty. I got the fried chicken which was a little salty. The mac and cheese was good, but not overly impressive. The prices were a bit high. I miss Mama Nem's in Orlando...haven't found a better soul food joint yet.
Good solid food. Oxtails are great and they don't skimp on the portion size. Prices have increased and the soda is extra.
I miss the breakfast they offered.
Good food, good price. They call it Soul Food but I call it just good ole food, the kind I grew up on. The mac and cheese is the best I have ever had anywhere. The oxtails are wonderful, swimming in grease. Not "healthy" but mighty fine eatin.
This is supposed to be Soul Food?. LOL Well they do have fried chicken and collards. Amazing to me what passes for soul food these days.
First off, this is a very nice cafeteria, just top notch environment with plentiful seating and lots of space between the tables. No chance of being squeezed by other patrons here. I drove out for the oxtails, but after seeing them opted for meatloaf and a piece of chicken instead, which was very very good. The meatloaf was just OK, a tad overcooked, like the collards which were also over-seasoned. I made sure to go early so as to avoid anything that may have sat around too long but it looks like 11:00 isn't early enough! Oh yeah, the cornbread.... this is supposed to be a soul food restaurant right? Jiffy mix makes a more authentic cornbread fer cryin out loud!
Dont get me wrong, this place is not bad, its just not that good. And I'm knocking off a point for screwing up the sweet tea, even with 2 lemon wedges it was too sweet to drink. I guess some people like it that way, especially fans of Type II Diabetes. Extremely overrated, and a bit overpriced too for what you get IMO. 6/10
Great place if you are looking for traditional Southern comfort food. I enjoy it every time I go.
Long wait for lunch but worht it.. We too a chance this place today Jan 30,2012. Boy what a surprise. A 30 min wait in line. We saw many people give up and walk out. But thank god we had the patients to stay,
Talk about real southern cooking. this is the place. The chicken is not as good as other places, But what blew us away was the service that the staff gave us. They all tried very hard to make sure we had a very nice time.
This is the first place where I had a question for the bus boy and he took 10 minuets to enplane to me the specials that they offered threw out the week.. I will go back to this place again, Out of five stars. I have to give this location 3 and 1/2 stars. mainly because I the chicken was what I would call plan. But this the highest rating I have eve given on this sight. Take a moment and go visit this place. Trust me. IT ROCKS.
This place is awesome! Awesome fried chicken, delicious Mac n Cheese! Extremely friendly service! Will definitely go back!
Ox Tail - Try it !. I've been here twice and they do a great job on comfort food. I didn't think I would ever try ox tail, let alone like it, but it was great, flavor. You must try it if you go there. It is a great place for a change.
Good Comfort Food. On Saturday afternoon we went to Potters House. My husband had the smothered pork chops with yellow rice, corn, macaroni and cheese and cornbread. The pork chops had a great flavor and were small-boned and not fatty but the gravy was too peppery for his taste. He indicated that the corn tasted like frozen corn which was fine by him since he prefers it. The highlight of his meal was the macaroni and cheese because it was very cheesy and smooth. I had the chicken tenders, fries, macaroni and cheese and cornbread. Everything had a great flavor especially the macaroni and cheese and the chicken which was made from really large chicken tenderloins and not pieces of chicken. The iced tea was average, neither good nor bad. Unfortunately, I did not leave any room for dessert but the pieces of hummingbird cake and red velvet cake looked delicious. The only stumbling point to our dining experience was that I had to wait about 10 minutes for my chicken and fries so by the time I received my entree I had already eaten the other side items and my husband felt guilty about eating his food while I sat waiting on mine. The servings were plentiful and the price was reasonable. The atmosphere in the bistro was open with plenty of room and everyone was helpful and friendly.
Nanna's Back-Up Plan. I loved this restaurant. Everytime we make our way through the line we are greated with a smile and warm words whether with myself or with kids. I would eat there every single day if my weight could handle it...but they have a gym across the restaurant. LOL.
Everything was great, wanted to place a whole new order. Roderica....Mobile, Alabama
Soooo good for your mouth!. My coworkers took me here the first time. I had greens for the first time here. I now order them wherever I go in hopes that they will be as good. They usually aren't. :) Phenomenal soul food!
Soultastic!. Best macaroni & cheese hands down
Hands down the best Mac-n-cheese around. Loved it. There collard greens are amazing as well. I havent tried to many southern cooking restaurants, but why go anywhere and possibly get disappointed when I can just go here for incredibly delicious food at great prices.
My friend and I absolutely loved it!! We travel a lot with work and have tried lots of soul food , but this is the real deal!! I have never been anywhere where EVERYTHING is good!! Especially corn bread...most places its dry and cornmealy...not here, its sweet, moist, and just perfect! then you get to top it off with dessert. My friend had the old fashioned yellow cake w choc icing like my granny used to make!! I had the red velvet, my fave, and the best red velvet cake I've had! We are going back tomorrow for Sunday dinner before we head home!
Great Southern Cooking. I expected and got good food. I didn't expect to see as many choices, more than is shown on their sample menu's.
Several alternatives for people who don't want fried. That being said, the fried chicken livers were outstanding and a very generous portion.
A nice place to take friends who are willing to try something different and off the beaten path, but not for everyone.
A generous discount for senior citizens. Friendly, helpful staff.
The food here is CRAZY GOOD. I've been a few times and it's always packed but definitely worth the wait. I've tried several items on the menu and everything is always super delicious. I love this place!
The MOST/BEST Southern-fried experience in JAX. Cafeteria style which is actually a plus as they have so many dishes to choose.
Entrees - especially the smothered pork chops - are awesome as are so many side options with GREAT desserts as well!
I don't get this far over on the Westside very often but when I do, I just can't miss this place. They also now serve breakfast on Saturdays!
PS - Don't make ANY plans after eating here. You will almost feel comatose by the time you get back into your car - no, I'm not kidding.
You've gotta try this place!. Cafeteria-style, but the best darn cafeteria you'll ever experience! I have a hard time saying "no" to their fried chicken, the best in town, IMO, but everything else I've tried on the menu has been really, really good, especially the braised ox tails! Their collard greens are not to be missed, and their desserts, the bread pudding in particular, are delicious. The yellow rice is ok, if a tad on the bland side. Their mac 'n' cheese is a total winner, though! They probably could stand to put in an extra drink counter, though, it can get kind of congested in that area.
It's really hard to beat good ol' down-home soul food, made with love, and the Soul Food Bistro delivers exactly that. Generous portions at a good price and the consistent quality of their food will keep you coming back for more!
It was okay...not the best. The staff wasn't extra friendly but they weren't rude or anything. I told them what I wanted, they put it on the tray and I kept going. The mac and cheese was really good but the fried chicken was a little dry. Not worth the 8.50 I paid. Sorry!!
Good soul food. Love this place. the best dish is the meatloaf when they have it and the mac and cheese. love it
Potters House is indeed the best Soul Food in Jax. ( exclamation point ) The staff is courteous and the atmosphere is compliments the food very well. You have got to try this. When I have people who visit the Jacksonville area, there are 2 places that I invite them to...#1 The Most Loving And Friendliest Church on the planet ... The Church of Jacksonville and #2 My favorite place to eat is The Potters House Bistro! You will not be disappointed !
Amazing food, such great prices! My husband & I were traveling through Florida from Tennessee & stopped at the Soul Food Bistro. He is ready to move to Jacksonville after our experience. Everything we ate was exceptional. Amazing fried chicken!!! We both loved the red velvet cake, as well. But not only was the food great, but I couldn't believe the prices. We both ate to our fill and had dessert all for $20!
Outstanding !!. I ate at the Bistro on 11/11/10 ,it was the very best . Everything about it was awesome . The price, portions and customer service really impressed me . I had the smothered pork chops yellow rice cabbage and sweet potatoes ,and even the sweet tea was just right !! Whenever I am in the area again I will be sure to stop in . I am from Maryland and would love it if we had some place like this in my area .
Who Doesn't Love Potter's House?. On a recent visit I noticed they are now serving breakfast on Saturday from 8:30- Noon. Mmmm..can't wait to try it. Also got the exact hours while I was there:
Monday- Closed
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday- 10:30AM-8PM
Wednesday & Sunday- 10:30AM-6PM
Saturday- 8:30AM- 6PM
Simply Delicious. I visited The Soulfood Bistro on 06/16/2010 and it was phenomenal. The service was splendid, the food was great, and even the individual that bagged my food was so fun and loving. This facility is welcoming for any event or group, whether it be family or co-workers. If you have not tried the food, you are truly missing out on souther hospitality, excellent service, and outstanding southern soul food cooking! :-)
Potter's House Experience. This is a wonderful place to eat and take family and friends. The place is Christian based, great service, and most of all great tasting food! You don't have add anything (seasoning) to your food other than something like hot sauce/pepper sauce. I just could not believe I was tasting food this delicious. I visited Jacksonville from Tallahassee in February, came back last week (March) to pick up a part from the Lexus shop and decided I could not leave Jacksonville without stopping by. I think it's addictive!
Potters House Soul Food Bistro. I ate here Friday Jan. 22. it was lunch, the line was pretty long, yet the wait was while worth it. The food was pleasing to the eye, my food was the best and the service was great. I live in Putnam County, but I plan to visit the best kept secret in Jacksonville again very soon. Keep up the good work.

Great food. Been there several times. The food is always great. It's a self-service style order, but their staff is always attentive (with a friendly attitude). Oxtails is awesome, something you have to try once. Ribs on Friday is good also.
Great food. Had to wait a minute but well worth it......... Keep up the healthy size portions and great flavor.....
Rib Sauce. The ribs are so good. Went on a Friday at 3:00, and there was a huge line the whole time I was there. Way worth the wait. make sure you ask for the rib sauce. it is sweet and tangy.
Food is top-notch soul food. I was confused about getting there, but it's in a small strip mall. It reminds me of how Piccadilly operates. There wasn't anything memorable about the service but nothing bad either. This is the only place I get oxtails. It's pricey but good with a large portion. The rest of the meals seemed pretty affordable, but I know oxtails are high everywhere. I usually eat for lunch and save half for later since it's so much. Definitely worth it.
Second time trying soul food but first in Florida. I'm glad I tried it. Food was okay. Did enjoy the cornbread. It was sweet!
This eatery was recommended by a local person who picked me up from the airport. I was brought here by a member of Central Metropolitan CME Church. I ordered the Oxtail plate with mac and cheese and green beans. Yellow rice comes with it. We had sweet tea to drink. I was pleasantly surprised at the deliciousness of the food. The Oxtails were super tender and flavorful, complimented by the yellow rice. They tasted like how I cook my own back home in Memphis. The mac and cheese was savory and cheesy. The green beans were rightly seasoned. I was doubly pleased with the portion sizes. When I got back to the hotel, I told everyone I knew about this down home soul food establishment. I will be back.
The food is chef kiss worthy! Green beans were flavorable and cooked perfectly, the cabbage was deliciously seasoned and the yams and mac n cheese was the stars of the plate, I couldn't be more satisfied with my overall experience. The service is efficient and courteous, and the atmosphere was friendly.
Food
I ordered the curry chicken and meatloaf special. They were out of curry chicken and only sent one meal via DOORDASH. I would have really appreciated a call so that I could try another option. They only sent one meal and door dash did not offer a refund. So two stars for service. And one star for atmosphere I’ve never been but I do order all the time
something was off about the meatloaf this week.
It doesn't look like much, but the food makes up for any lack of atmosphere!
I stopped through between work meetings to grab a bite to eat. The line was long, so knew the food would be good. Basic choices, meatloaf was the special, but I was not that brave (the guy behind me in line was raving about it, tho).
Herb chicken was moist and tasty. The green beans were straight out of grans kitchen, and the yams left me wanting more.
I couldn't help myself, and had to try the peach cobbler. It did not disappoint, and the last bite came too quickly. So good.
Definitely recommend, and I'll be back again!
Great service 1 hour before closing, despite the long line. Ms. Delores put tables together so the 15 of us could sit together. She was very pleasant and helpful. The dressing was delicious. The oxtails were tender but could've been better trimmed so that white blobs of fat were not on them in my plate. All the food had great taste.
The food here has never disappointed me. If you are looking for some good soul food, I definitely recommend stopping by. It is located in a little shopping plaza that is owned by the Potter's House (as is the Bistro). You go inside and stand in line to get around to the serving counter. The menu is behind the counter and large enough for everyone to see. They have a large variety of food to choose from. I had the fried pork chops (3 pieces is what I received) with rice and gravy, macaroni and cheese, and cabbage. My daughter had the meatloaf with double macaroni and cheese. My grandson had the chicken wings with macaroni and cheese and fries. We also received corn bread with each meal. The food was hot and delicious. It was seasoned well, also. The line moves pretty quickly, and they get you checked out right away. By the cash register is where you can get dessert and drinks. We did not get drinks as we were taking the food home. However, we did get Lemon cake. The cake was very moist and delicious. I have tried the food here on a few different occasions. I love it!
The food here is always good…but I had no idea how big of a heart Soul Good Bistro has..ty so much for the blessing when my husband and I came and got our meals…service was great!
I always make sure to visit this place every time I'm in Jacksonville because their food is consistently good, fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious.
This food is Slap your mama good! They season food like my mama, grandma and my Aunt Doretha... its like a family reunion in your mouth.
The only thing they need to fix, is that rude male server on the peas, last night..1 Aug 2021.
Great job!
I don’t know why I’m so late going to Soul Food Bistro. I guess because I have a mom that can cook me any true Southern meal whenever I want. I’m really picky about my Southern food since I’m a native Georgia Peach, but my little cousin repeatedly told me how great this place is. I’ll agree the food is pretty good. It still isn’t my moms food, but still a really good alternative if you don’t want to slave in the kitchen to have a good home cooked down South coma dinner lol.
I got the fried chicken which was fried good and seasoned nicely. I got a taste of my cousin’s oxtails. They were very tender. The cabbage was okay, but my cousin and I both agreed they were missing something today. No biggie though. The food still was still really good, and I loved the variety cafeteria style. I’ll definitely come back when I have taste of home and need a close substitute. Nice job Soul Food Bistro.
We booked the side banquet area. The staff seemed really disengaged and unwelcoming at first but then warmed up. Atmosphere could use some updating. But if you’re focused on just the food, it’s awesome.
