The best place to dine in or out. They serve breakfast and lunch. My faves are the cheese pita toast with link sausage inside, and the salad for lunch with their famous “Desert Rider sauce”!
I got the chicken salad sandwich from the "lunch menu" posted came with homemade potato salad. Everything taste so good....was a little shocked when I was told the total was $9 so you can not use the pricing from the posted menu. Wish they would update the menu with the correct pricing. But food was very good.
Excellent value and taste. Our company recently moved downtown and i have been exploring the different cafe's and sandwich shops. I stumbled upon Desert Rider and i was thoroughly impressed. It appears they have been in downtown Jacksonville for more than 40 years, and it easy to see why. I chose the hot ham and cheese, but opted out of the honey mustard dressing. I just had them add lettuce and tomato and i was good to go. i got potato salad as a side and it was excellent. The pita was stuffed full of ham and it was heated just right. I say if you havent tried the Desert Rider then give it a shot and while you are in there look at the old photos of downtown Jacksonville.

Desert Rider. Man, this can this be the same sandwich shop as the 70's - just across the street from Barnett Banks (probably not that name now) and the Atlantic Bank Sandwich shop? I lived there in 1973-1974 and they had the best pita sandwiches - loved the one called "THE DESERT RIDER" as best I remember it had something like salami, lettuce and these little chip things and a great oil-vinegar type dressing. M-M-M. Over the last 40 years, I have dreampt of those sandwiches often. They were soooooooooooooooooooooo good. When your food is good, you last a long, long time. I have not found another sandwich shop that had this sandwich. Branch out and open a shop in Nashville, TN
Superdog & a cookie or a cookie and a Superdog. Either way it is as close to heaven as you can get.
Wandered in here and so glad I did!! Had a delicious desert rider with the absolute best potato salad. The service was wonderful. Sweet ladies work here.
Ordered the Desert Rider and Chicken Salad sandwich lunch specials. The combo includes the sandwiches, pickles, drinks and potato salads. The potato salad was really really tasty and flavorful! Price was reasonable for the food portion. Staff members were very friendly. Great downtown Jacksonville location near the skyway station. Definitely would recommend for a quick lunch options (both dine in or to go).
I found this place by mistake and i can’t believe I’ve never been here before!! I had she breakfast in a cup..OMG..the best grits outside of my mothers grits. They were the perfect consistency. There was enough meat through out the entire bowl and not just the top like some other breakfast spots. Then i ordered the deluxe salad!!! OMGGG meat..meat and more meat. You can tell the ladies here love what they do..even in a crowded place they love with such ease and class, i can’t wait to come back.
I've been going here for years. Always friendly staff. Great food. The only problem is parking. It is downtown so get ready to look for a parking spot. Lol at times it takes longer to find parking than the service you receive. A MUST.
It’s been years since I’ve eaten here and I wasn’t disappointed. I agree with another commenters it’s very old-school and that’s part of its charm. I had my favorite sandwich which is tunafish with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers on toasted pita bread and it was very good. It was really good pita bread too. Their tunafish is on the sweet side and so was the homemade potato salad that came with it -which was also very good. The crisp dill pickle was a nice touch and I enjoyed the fresh ice tea. Bill came to $22 for two people
Had to run into the eye doctor. Good thing about that was being able to grab a Camel Ryder to go. Made for a good day!
I should have taken a “before” picture; regardless, my Camel Rider sandwich was AWESOME - and very filling, the potato salad was delish, and now I’m hooked. New favorite sandwich shop. If you haven’t eaten here yet you are missing out on a gem. Oh, if you don’t like your sandwiches wet, I think there is a Jimmy John’s around the corner...
No matter what you get from here you won't be disappointed. I love Larry's salad is the boom. Fantastic and kudos kudos to the worker's.
This is my spot that I enjoy dinning in or taking it home I always get same thing which is the Arabian club w their famous potato salad.
I haven't been since last year but I have to always say their customer service is always good the the ladies who work their are very nice and food always fresh and good .
My hubby and I live within walking distance which is a major plus.
Awesome chicken salad sandwich. Nice and old school. Friendly service too.
I really love this place. Good food, good portions. Best salads and oatmeal cookies mmmm mmmm good. Great place soooo glad that it's still open.
I have been going to this restaurant for 30 years; since I was a little girl. I love the family atmosphere & the food is good. Breakfast is a must. 4 stars because the prices are a little high now, so I don't frequent as often as I use to..The cookies are a must, they also have the "good ice"..
Great Service! At reasonable prices. Asked if it was our first time, which it was, and gifted us two cookies. My husband loved it!
Certainly will be back :)
I don't know where to begin. This hole in the wall sandwich shop has blown me away with how delicious everything they make is! Try the home made ranch its amazing! Great employees and great food!
This place is amazing. It is tucked away downtown off of Hogan near Hemming Plaza. It is an old school feel when you walk in with amazing food and staff. If you like salads, you have to try the Larry's salad with parmasean vinaigrette dressing. Best in town!
My family and I ate here for the first time and the food was amazing. I had the chicken salad, best I ever had. The staff was very friendly and as a token of being a first timer offered us free cookies....WOW! Definitely a repeat customer!!

Want an old fashioned chicken salad plate with the house dressing? This is the place to go. I cannot forget to mention the oatmeal cookies. You just gotta have at least one. Check it out. I think you'll like it. It has been a downtown staple for many years.
