The food is absolutely incredible! I've tried a number of things and ALL of them are delicious! The staff there are awesome too! We just moved to the area and this is definitely going to be a regular hangout for us. I'm German too and grew up on German food and this food is fantastic!! Don't pass it by!!

Never had German food before. This food is amazing and soooo affordable! Service was extremely lacking though. The girl took our order, we got our food, and we never saw her again until she brought us our check. When she brought the check, then she refilled my drink. I ran out of water halfway through my meal. Would have been nice to have something to drink while eating.

The place was filled right after opening at 11 AM on a Friday! The servers here were friendly and caring. They don’t know it but when someone is having a bad day they make it just a little bit better. Great American style German food, excellent sweet tea, quick service! There’s not a bad thing to say about this place.
Ashlyn Bailey
Absolutely loved it! Very welcoming and cozy. 10/10 will definitely be coming back soon!! The food was perfect and the service was lightning fast. Authentic German food with plenty of simple options so you don't get to overwhelmed.

Freiberg's is always amazing. It's absurd seeing a $5 lunch deal at any sit down restaurant in today's day & age, but the quantity & quality of the food makes it so much more unbelievable. I don't think you'll find a deal like this anywhere else, that I'm aware of at least. I highly recommend the pork schnitzel with a side of bratkartoffeln & beer cheese. Seriously one of the most satisfying meals I've eaten in a long time!

Stopped here on a whim when driving thru. Great prices and great food! Our waitress did a great job and was very friendly.

First time going. Date night getaway with the hubs and we love trying new places. Found this place and honestly would have never gave it a second glance by just walking by it. Once inside though it’s great. Decor is great. Staff is incredibly friendly. The place was clean and tidy.
We got seated top floor at a window seat and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Until the food came out and then I was!! So much food for you money and we definitely had to ask for a box. Date night was a success and so is this place. SOLID 9 out of 10!! Can’t wait to go back

The food is always amazing. I'm working my way thru the menu. Haven't had a bad experience in anyway. Staff is wonderful as well. TRY THIS PLACE! YUM YUM!
Maggie
Bratwurst and sauerkraut!!!! I love the stuff and theirs is wonderful! The roasted potatoes are a great side! Plus they bring out nice bread beforehand.
Tommy Cee
The food here is awesome the ambience of laughter fun and conversation you can have here are endless not to mention the huge portions of food you receive when you purchase food here I loved my experiences here and I will definitely go back again

My wife and i are both half German and grew up on German food, we just moved from Florida and heard good things about this place. We went for lunch and were thouroughly dissapointed. The pretzels were frozen boxed pretzels you can buy at the store. The rest of food wasnt bad it just wasnt authentic German food.
Donald Sorah
Freiberg's serves you hearty portions of authentic German cuisine. Wait staff wasn't the best, but wasn't horrible either. The food was delicious. My favorites are actually the sides: potatoes and red cabbage. A great value for the cost. Schnitzel was perfectly cooked with a tender inside and a slightly crispy breaded coating. Wish there were more beers on tap.

Horrible food and service. My wife and I have been there twice since retiring in the area three years ago. I'm retired military and lived in Germany for 7 years. We went back the second time in hopes that it would be better than our first trip there. NOT!! The food is overpriced, tastes very bad and the service sucks!! We'll not be going back again...

Food. It was great food for lunch and the atmosphere was good. The taste was great.
Michelle
Had the Chicken Schnitzel, red cabbage & Bavarian potato salad. Ordered beer cheese on the side. The chicken was great (dipped bites in the beer cheese). Bavarian potato salad had a bit too much vinegar for my taste. The red cabbage was sweet with a strong clove taste. Next time I think I will get the same chicken but try the potato, onion & bacon side and the broccoli side & just pour that fabulous beer cheese all over everything. Or just get a homemade pretzels & beer cheese appetizer. Can you tell the beer cheese is my favorite? Go at lunch and the prices are cheaper. Get there early. Limited seating and there's usually a long wait.

Better than Germany?. My brother recently took a 2 week vacation over seas. In which he ate at 3 different German restaurants. He swears Johnson city has them beat hands down! Love this place!
Shenina
To die for.... Boulette Andreas with mashed potatoes and fried potatoes is absolutely to die for. The pretzel and beer cheese is awesome also. Definitely reccomend this place!
Polly
It can be hit or miss. The food is pretty consistent. You can tell when the owner is off. Sense of urgency around service drops considerably. Good value overall!!!

Big food, bigger beers!. Freiberg's is a must if you visit Johnson city! They have fabulous lunch and beer specials. They also have a few local beers on tap, the pan fried potatoes are amazing, and the service is always good. I recommend going for lunch because the portions are more reasonable or asking for a box at the beginning of your meal if you go for dinner.

Best German. Great food, Wife and I get take out, but all the food is hot and tasty. Great prices, Have ordered nothing here bad yet.
Rgregory887
The best German food in JC!. Actually, the best food downtown JC has to offer. The German dishes are the best, but god help you if you want a green vegetable that hasn't been deep-fired...;
Definitely worth a trip downtown for lunch.

We are 30 min from freiburgs and drove there one night to eat there because it is our new favorite place. We checked what time they close because it was around 8 o'clock. Two different websites said they closed at 10. So we drive there and when we pulled up, the sign said they close at 9. I precede to walk in and ask about it. A very rude woman answered and said that they are only open till 10 during the summer. Ofcourse I was very upset because I had driven a ways to get there.
Mastershock
Disappointed... First of all, their beer on tap had a problem with the cooling system so no on tap beer. Then, the food was overpriced and limited. Place was deserted. Waitress took the order, brought the food, brought the check. 40 bucks for 2 people and one bottle of beer. Total waste.

Worst Service Ever!. Wow, this was the worse service I have ever received in my life. I am still upset enough the day after that I have decided to post this and make a review on every review site I can find. My party of 15 came to share a meal and celebrate my wife's birthday at 7pm on 12-6-2013. We informed the hostess of the occasion. We were seated but only provided about 8 sets of silverware. The waitress (Maria – emp # 4546) was rude to us from the beginning. It all started when one of my friends ordered Das Boot. She emphatically said "No!" cutting him off apparently agitated that he didn't take time to read that their menu had no such item. We ordered our drinks and our food. But upon delivery (food was quick and good) that was the last time we really saw her. NOT A SINGLE ONE OF US ever got a refill on any of our drinks. We were out of drinks the entire meal. I wanted some ketchup but never got the chance to ask for any. Finally, I had to go find her by leaving the table and telling her we needed silverware, refills (most of us were out of drink before our meal arrived and NEVER saw another drop), some of us needed our check. She balked but came over. She asked "Would anyone like a drink to go?". I chimed in, "We would like drinks during our meal to start with." She ignored me and walked away. I followed her and asked her why she just did that. At first she refused to speak to me. But then when I repeated the question she said, "because I don't feel like being bitched at". I asked to speak to the manager. And I asked her for her name. She refused her name and told me that this establishment has no manager. I asked who the owner was. She didn't answer. As I walked to the bar to ask other employees this question she finally told me her name. And I confirmed it on our receipt. She STILL never brought us silverware or refilled ANY drinks. They did NOTHING particular for my wife's birthday (I had requested a song - hostess said she would take care of it) - and I wanted to order her a dessert. Dessert was NEVER offered. We told the waitress our respective paying groups at the time of our orders but she brought me a single check for the entire amount. Frustrated, another member of our party grabbed the check from me and took it back to her and had her separate the checks. He says that she complained about me the whole time. Well, I for one will never eat here again, and based on some of the comments posted on our groups web page... neither will any of the others who were all insulted by this unbelievable lack of professionalism. She kept insisting that it was my fault because I wasn't clear to her about what I wanted and that it was too loud for her to hear. First of all, I can't convey what we need when she doesn't come to the table. And secondly I shouldn't have to make it clear that everyone wants refills and forks. I am a HUGE advocate of the hard-working. I worked as a server for 2 years. But this woman does not deserve a job. With all the people still searching for employment there is no excuse to not take at least some small amount of pride in the work that you do. She CLEARLY did not want to be there and we paid the price. So, sorry Frieberg's... you will not be seeing any of my business again... and likely not of any of those present that night.

Wunderbar!. Excellent food and with it superior service. I have eaten here several times and I always leave wanting to return. My spouse and I usually order the smoked bratwurst and schnitzel with a side of BratKartofln (fried potatoes). Although they are delicious we are always eager to try new things on the menu and when we do we are never disappointed.
In regards to the service and waiters/waitresses they have to be the best in town. Even if complications do arise they are quick to render a solution. Never have we been mistreated nor neglected by a sever when we required extra assistance.

Good sturdy German Food. If you're looking for the kind of food that will "stick to your ribs" (perhaps permanantly) this is the place for you.

Good, honest, German fare (not light, not Health Food) at fair prices, and usually a good selection of beers. Where I go to scratch my Hefeweizen Itch.

Lunch is a grand bargain- the place is always packed, and you can spend the same amount for a great meal here, as you can for a bag of McNasty's fast-foodlike substances.

If there are any restaurants in Johnson City worth mentioning, it is Freibergs. We don't eat there every week, but we do stop in from time to time for a unique experience. From the beer, the decor or the food Freibergs always delivers. My favorite dishes are paprika chicken and chicken with jaeger sauce. I'm so glad to have this restaurant in Johnson City.
Dddavis606
Awful. My husband an I have been going to Freiberg's frequently since we moved to this area. The food and service has always been superb. However, the food and service on 6/28/13 was the WORST ever. I ordered the pork schnitzel(something I always get 'cos it was so good) and the cut of meat used was the toughest piece of meat. I did not eat it. Our waitress failed to return to question satisfaction, see if we needed anything. We finally got one of the other waitstaff to come to our table. We explained the dissatisfaction with my food and the service. The waitperson said they would probably take my meal off. Well, when it came time to pay, after waiting again for the bill, we finally got up and went to pay ourselves. We were requested to speak to management and were told there was none. The meal was not taken off and the waitress made a point of showing the other waitstaff that we didn't leave a tip. Sorry to say because of this, we will no longer be eating there and will not recommend them to anyone in the future.

Best Lunch in Town. Freiberg's is a great restaurant. I really don't understand some of the reviews. The food is not authentic? You do realize that Germany is a big place with different types of food in different parts of the country. Just because it does not match something you had somewhere else does not mean it is not authentic. I have eaten in Germany, as well as at top German restaurants in Cincinnati (a hot bed of German Cuisine), Columbus, and New York City. All were different. And I have a German grandmother. They all make different styles of German food. All are good.

The lunch is a great deal. $4.99 gets you a plate heavy with food. I usually get the schnitzel or bratwurst and have never been disappointed. I always get the Fried Potatoes AND the mashed potatoes. Both are excellent. There is no better deal anywhere. The dinner is the same good food, with a few additions and costing a bit more.

And the Paprika beef will haunt your dreams. Served over either mashed or fried potatoes ( or both, which is my preference) this is more than enough for two.

The beer selection is excellent as well, and the service has always been friendly if not always super quick.
Dana McAmis
Sauerbraten and fried potatoes are awesome! Big enough for two.
Mary
A disappointment. This restaurant is rated Number 1 in Johnson City. Here are the issues (by the way, I've NEVER reviewed before!): 1) Menu out-of-date. . .was told no onion tart was available and hadn't been for a long time even though it was listed on the menu as the number one item on the menu; 2) No pasta salad any longer offered either; 3) No bread available; 4) Red cabbage undercooked and without much flavor and finally; 5) Fried cheese sampler was described as "a selection of cheeses" but all were mozzarella. Is that German?? Very overpriced for poor quality. Would not go back!
Sam E E Antley
Pretty Good. The smoked bratwurst was pretty good.... The BratKartofln (fried potatoes) was excellent. The sauerkraut was more bland that I would have liked, but overall a pleasant dining experience. Most Americans are either unfamiliar about German food as a whole (other than the ubiquitous schnitzel or brat) or if they are familiar, most have never had great examples. Have been to Germany several times and spoken with top restranteurs in and around Bavaria, I would say the food is good, reasonably priced and the service is good. (Now if the service staff would just learn a little deutch, all would be right with the world :-) )

Wunderbar.. It's been years since I was in Germany. I loved the food and beer there. Well, going to Freiberg's is like stepping back in time and sampling those wonderful things again. And they're not afraid to give you plenty either.

While there are other excellent choices on the menu, I'd go with the Freiberg Schnitzel. Be sure to add the fried potatoes as a side.
Cecil
Awesome food and killer atmosphere Very friendly.

Only German Food in Johnson City. Have eaten here on several occasions and can say the food is consistent. For what you get the price in my opinion is very good. have had a couple of the different sauces and always interesting. Cabbage that comes with the plates is always good too. Lunch Mon- Friday is the best for the money.

-----25 Jan, 2013-----

Good Lunch. Have been here more than once for lunch. The options at lunch are plentiful and very modest price. I have experienced the same as some others re the red cabage being slightly off on days but not every time. I have enjoyed the lunches and will try for dinner some night.

have have had two of the sauces and both of those were very good as well.
Toby Gardiner
Bring your appetite. Huge portions. More than enough for 2. Might want to share an entree
Tammy Tilson
I was very disappointed. The service was slow and the food was cold. Way too high for our first experience! Won't go back.
Karen
Go for lunch!!. Husband and I went here for lunch, and it is a great value! Schnitzel was delicious, as was the bratwurst my husband got. Good food and awesome value at lunch time.
Shandy
OK, sort of, great potatoes. I really like the downstairs atmosphere. I got the schnitzel on a pretzel bun and potatoes. It's some heavy food, which is no surprise from what I understand about German food. I haven't been to Germany. I loved the potatoes. I'm on the fence.
Carolyn Mathis
My husband and I ate here tonight being from outbid town I went and looked at the rating on urbanspoon. Our bottom line without writing a long review was that if you want to order German food, you can do that here. If you want authentic German food they don't have it. I got a breaded fried pork chop (schnitzel ) with mashed potatoes and broccoli . Broccoli was still frozen in some places potatoes were ok but I have had better My husband got brat combo platter with fried potatoes and red cabbage. Again he said the same thing. Just German food but not cooked like authentic German food Monday night. Maybe the real chef was off
Brian
Go for lunch. During the week Freiberg's offers a really nice selection of lunch menu items that are great priced and nearly the same size as the dinner portion. Excellent food, servers can be iffy, but that's kind of the story for Johnson City.
Foodlover
Yum. I have only eaten there twice but both times the service was wonderful. The beer cheese and pretzels are delicious! I would also recommend the schnitzel. I am not an expert on German food by any means, but I enjoyed my meal.
Renia Collins
Fantastic! The best place to go if you want something different.
Mary Ramsey
5 on a scale of 10. If I hadn't eaten at Berghoffs in Chicago so often, maybe I wouldn't set my expectations so high.....but I did, and therefore I do! That, coupled with having German grandparents means I simply love good German cuisine, and it seems to be 'hit and miss' here. The owner/chef, might consider tweeking their recipes to taste more like those that made Berghoffs a legend! And Berghoffs' wait staff was something to behold also! Why glow when you could shine brilliantly?
Amateur Reviewer
Great food!. My personal favorite is the beef rouladen...absoltutely fabulous! Of course, red cabbage and fried potatoes with a half liter of fransikaner beer. I've eaten in several german restaurants over the years and find that Freibergs stacks up as the best among them!
Scott
This is not the best German food we have ever eaten, but,...this is one heck of a nice addition to local eateries. Food is good but be sure and visit on the weekend for the live German music. U really do feel like u r in Germany!

I love Freiberg's!. My favorite Johnson City restaurant especially on Sunday afternoons between the lunch and dinner crowds. Large portions, roulaten, saurbraten and snitzels have always been excellent. The snitzels over lap a standard plate. Not to forget the wonderful Franziskaner draft beer. The only tap in JC.
Nico
Awesome schnitzel! Perfectly crispy and tender inside. I ordered it with a delicious spicy paprika gravy that rocked my world. Unfortunately the sides ruined the meal for me. The cabbage was overwhelmed by clove, it was inedible. The German potatos tasted like vinegar, they were inedible. The kraut tasted like it was cooked in a burnt pan, it had a terrible smoky flavor. The service was mediocre. Overall the experience was not worth what they charge for each plate
Love To Eat Out
Was looking foreward to it.... The wife and I went for lunch 9/30/11. We ordered tea to drink. It was good. I was excited to try the Wienerschnitzel based on the photos shown online. What I was served was less than half portion and too dry to eat. It truly was awful. It was if it were cooked earlier and held for serving later. The potatoes and bacon was delicious! Didn't like the hot potato salad. Thankfully I ordered a smoked bratwurst. It was also delicious, served on kraut. We had to ask for mustard.

My wife ordered the ground beef steak w onions. It was nice and thick but way overcooked. Again as if it had been held warm. She had the potatoes and onions w bacon. Again these were delicious, as were the steak onions. The red cabbage was bland.

Neither of us were impressed with the service. Our server was paying more attention to her apparent friends than her other tables.

We were hoping to take another couple here but glad we did our recon first. Sorry but based on this lunch we cannot recommend Freiberg's.

Good German fare in a quaint little friendly restaurant.

AWESOME FOOD! Very satisfied with service and the price. I highly recommend it. If you like German food and spirits, you won't be disappointed.

The service was good, as was the food. There are two kinds of potato salad, when I ordered it, I assumed it would be German style. When it arrived, it was American style. I asked about it, and they brought the kind I expected, which was more vinegary than I hoped, buy it was good (with bacon bits!). The beef rouladen was a bit dry, over cooked, but better than most German restaurants. The schnitzel looked great though, I'd get that next time. Worth repeated visits, good atmosphere, and pleasant staff.
Melanie Teegarden
Excellent!. The potato salad is not the way my German grandparents made it - there is mayonnaise in it, for one thing. But despite this one thing, I have never had a bad or even mediocre meal there. The atmosphere is very appealing, the waitstaff are competent and friendly, and the food is always good, if a little on the pricey side. The rent is probably pretty high in that building, so I guess they do what they have to do and yeah, we eat there and we pay it as do other people, so it's working out for them. I would probably eat there more often if it wasn't quite so expensive, but hey. That's totally okay, too. If you go for lunch, definitely try the salami and brie sandwich - it is beyond wonderful. If you're there for dinner, try anything. It's all great. Also you can get good German beer there and sit in a lovely environment to drink it, which is reason enough to go.
Secretshopper
HMMMM. Its Ok at best...Several of the reviews commented on the crispy...yes, no meat just fried batter..I too have spent time in Germany and this is not what I remember.. fried potatoes and sausages are great but any East TN Native can make those.
The annoying thing is sitting at the bar waiting for a table and listening to the abuse heaped out on employees. It is larger than the portions and embarrasing to listen to as a customer. It is at best a casual place to meet friends for dinner and drinks...FINE dining ?...hardly.
Eric Schuler
Excellent and authentic.... German food done right.
The food was excellent and well prepared. The portions are on the large side.
The lentil soup was hearty and flavorful. A rich beef base with carrots and onions.
The schnitzel was pounded thin and lightly fried to perfection.
The Rouladen was full of flavor and covered in an thick gravy. A good dish but not my favorite.
All of the sides we sampled were wonderful. Out table had sauerkraut, Bavarian potato salad, red cabbage (a bit sweet and seasoned with clove), and broccoli.
Service:
The service was less that stellar on this visit. One wrong order, drinks not being refilled promptly (with very few tables filled) and the orders consistently being given to the wrong people at the table. Hopefully the service issues will work themselves out.
I plan to return to sample their Bratwust in the future.
The schnitzel is worth a return trip as well.
The Apple Strudel was a wonderful finish to the meal. Filled with apples, cranberries, nuts, topped with carmel and served with ice cream. The Strudel was a bit dense (it would have been easier to eat with a fork) but full of flavor and a wonderful way to finish the meal.

Dreaming of german food for the first time in my life. This place is a winner. tasty beer and huge servings. will come back again.
Andrew
A foodies delight!! Great portions of good German food served with a thirst quenching liter of beer. Highly recommend this for fellow foodies. Also, owner seems to run a very tight ship in there.
Katina
Pretty good. The food was hot and came surprisingly fast! Not the greatest place if your looking for a romantic place with your significant other, but don't get me wrong its a great place to hang out with that other but is for sure not 'romantic'.

I had the beef dish with gravy and potatoes. My partner had chicken and broccoli. It was all huge and was really a great meal. **(IF YOU GO you MUST have the fried cheese plate appetizer , was just about one of my favorite 'bad4u' foods!)**

8.5/10
Live2Eat
I love this place!. I can't say enough good things about Freiberg's! The duo that performs live there on the weekends are wonderful! They really set the mood. I've never had a bad or unfavorable meal, either. My favorite is the Original Brat with pan-fried potatoes and red cabbage. Makes me hungry thinking about it!. Service has always been very good, even when they are extremely busy. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.
Lauren Milner
Supurb!. Absolutely love this place. I've eaten there many many times and it is always wonderful. For the amount of food you get the prices are great. Plates are generally enough to feed two people, or eat twice on. My parents and I traveled around Germany when I was younger and they say that this food is authentic to the area in East Germany it is from. It is also the best we have had since being to Germany. Andreas is spectacular and works very hard managing and being the chef, super props to him and all of the wonderful people that have made every visit enjoyable! You know it's a great place when you say the name and everyone gets excited to go!
Scott
Good food. Great German singer/ musician on weekend. Great German beer.
Dan Boner
Nice place to have a reasonably priced lunch with coworkers. Atmosphere is nice and food is good, although I would not consider it authentic German.
Martie Lawson
Good Food?????. I will start with the good. The accordian player was excellent and the male soloist was amazing!!!
Now for the bad. I must say this was the worst German food I have ever eatten. I have never eatten crispy (almost burnt) Schnitzel! People who have never eatten real German food may like it, but my husband & I have lived in Germany. The beer selection was also suprisingly limited. I can get Warsteiners at Kroger.
I would not recommend this restraunt. I was highly dissapointed.
Ted Johnson
Yuck. Had the worst .. if you can call it a brat.. here, absolutely no flavor, cold, and late. service was horrible, prices were high.. crap. come on now j.c. gimme some good german food
Bill Woods
German Food Find. I thoroughly enjoyed this "taste of Germany" on three occasions. The food is very good (schnitzels, sauer braten, bratwurst, etc), the service was good and the downtown location is charming. Very reasonably priced German beer on draught and a good selection of bottled imported beer.
Redmond Barry
Worth the trip. The food is good. The majority of dishes are not authentic because nobody would appreciate fine, Sachsen food, but the ones that are authentic are delicious. The beer is great and reasonably priced. Owners are great people.
Steve
Very Nice Place. The food is pretty good and the atmosphere is wonderful. I have dined there on many occasions and its almost always the same. The waitresses are lovely and the owner walks around the whole place conversing with the guests and making sure every thing is to their liking. It does get a bit busy on some weekends, but I have never had any problem with a wait. Over all one of the best places to eat in Johnson City.
Rbuss1
The beer is good, the food isn't and the service is awful!. I've lived in Germany on 6 different occasions and I really love good German food. Freiberg's food doesn't resemble anything I ever experienced in Germany. I gave this place three tries to get it right. The schnitzel was greasy and way overcooked the first two times and the saurkraut obviously comes out of a can. They do serve huge quantities and the price was not bad at all. On our last visit the service was lousy to the point of insulting. The waitress chose not to seat us downstairs even though there were tables available. She sat us upstairs, alone, at the darkest corner of the room and forgot about us. We waited around for about 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge our existence and then we walked out. I doubt if we'll ever go back. If you want authentic German food in the tri-cities area, Gasthaus Edelweiss in Gate City is the place to go. The food is excellent, the price is reasonable, the service appreciative and the restaurant is even an authentic replica of a typical Bavarian restaurant.
Matt Lawson
Lo and behold German food is much closer to Southern Comfort food! The Jagerschnitzel is what southerners call Fried Porkchops and Mushroom Gravy served with about three scopes of rich mashed potatoes and that’s just one of my side. For my other side I can get breakfast potatoes, potato salad, or krauts of varying color and since no one at my table can agree on the same two side items, I have been fortunate to try most of them and they are all remarkable.
