The staff know about the food and can explain what things are as well as offer meaningful descriptions of what to expect. They don't say "its good". They tell you what flavors, textures and heat a dish has.

Came here with my parents today. Fantastic service, fast, and honestly great prices for what you get. The food is awesome! I got the Crawfish Etouffe. It was the first time I had ever had it, and it's flavorful and very filling.
This is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience! Creol food is amazing and this place does it well. Service is good and they are patient and helpful if it’s a new experience to you.
Decided to try this place today. Very cool decor and clean. The girl behind the counter was friendly and helpful, offering us samples of anything we wanted. We decided on the bourbon chicken bowl and the Nola nachos with voodoo chicken and white chili. We got the bowl with brown rice, green onions and shredded cheddar cheese. I think the bourbon chicken is the best tasting and most flavorful, I'm not a spicy girl. My boyfriend liked the voodoo chicken over the drunken chicken. I did too, even though I didn't care for it being spicy. The portions are huge, we definitely could share a bowl, so the price was adequate for the amount they give you. We got corn bread, too, that was good, as well. I don't normally care for cajun/gumbo type food... but since we have more coupons, we'll be back. If you do like this type of food, I think you'd be pleased.
A little taste of Nawlins, right here in Kalamazoo! Love their Crawfish Gumbo, sweet cornbread, and the red beans & rice! This food will have your tongue slappin' your forehead!
Loved the Honey Sriracha Chicken, excellent place. I am looking forward to trying something more spicy next time.

Such a pleasure and welcoming host. Wow the food is delicious. Customer is jam up. Awesome food. Love the try before you buy it. The voodoo chicken jam up perfect spice combination. Some of the best food I've had since I've been here and Kalamazoo and it ain't anything Burger you never thought you would have found a jam up gumbo shop in Kalamazoo Michigan whoever whoever owns this joint and keep doing it they're doing it right you got great help as well
First time coming here, the employees were so kind and patient, and quick to explain the menu. They have some really tasty vegetarian options that I loved and my husband tried something with chicken. We both were very satisfied. The servings are big so I had plenty to take home. Inside is nice and plays great music too. Love it here!
First time in; loved the festive decor. Clean, laid out nicely. Ordering was a bit of chore as I think the employee was new; thankfully he was backed by an enthusiastic associate who seemed to really know what was going on, liked his job. Food was delicious (both appetizer and main course had the crawdad in it), again, really really good and look forward to visiting again to try their Bowl challenge. Fun place
I had the sampler and I think it was a good choice, I got to try several things. Some dishes are very spicy, so be careful and ask before ordering. The Bourbon Street chicken was my favorite. The dessert we tried was too sweet, to the point that it kinda ruined was could had been an excellent cobbler.
I've been there quite a few times since they opened. Every time I've been there they have been extremely friendly and accommodating, especially with my 10yo daughter who is a picky eater. The food is always fresh and the staff does a great job of explaining the differences between the dishes. If you're not sure what you want they will let you sample the various mixes until you find the perfect dish for you. I've recommended them to countless friends and am sad that I'm moving to Grand Rapids as I'll no longer have J Gumbo's right around the corner!
This is not authentic Cajun food, however for Michigan it's not bad. Customer service was excellent, the staff was very helpful. The food is pre-made and kept warm buffet Style, so service is very quick. The food was good, not great. It's definitely tasty enough to try again.
Love the food and big portions too!! Service is outstanding. Always greeted with a smile and fast to serve.
Catering is great as well. Food was well packed and labeled. Suggested serving combinations were written on the containers and there was plenty to go around. Would definitely have J Gumbo cater again and recommend for your event.
