If you're in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and go here. The menu is so simple it's funny. But what they do, they do very well.
In my hometown growing up, once a year the Jaycees would grill up these delicious chickens. I have fond memories of eating that chicken. So, it is so much fun to go to El Pollo Rey and relive that memory. All you can eat at this place is chicken, don't go looking for anything else cause it ain't on the menu. They only do one thing, and boy do they do it right.
The food is pretty good, I liked everything I tried. My party got three half chickens and an order of wings and it is a lot of food. The wings were really good because they actually had buffalo flavor and weren't just straight Tabasco flavored like you get some places. The only problem is there isn't much space to sit. If they are busy you will have to wait a little bit for your food. I don't mind waiting a little bit, it just sucked not being able to sit until someone finished. It was really good overall though.
Just great chicken! A hidden gem that is a must for the adventurous eater. Their menu is just whole chicken, half a chicken and chicken wings and they know how to do them right.
There are three things on the menu: a whole chicken, half chicken, and wings. All are served with rice and beans (like beans and hotdogs) and a few tortillas. The food is fantastic. The chicken is moist and the char something divine. Bring friends.
This is the best chicken anywhere around KC. You go in here they have three options: half chicken, full chicken, or buffalo wings. All are amazing they come with sides of beans, rice, and salsa sauce that looks like applesauce, but is really good too. On top if being delicious it's really reasonable too. Please do yourself a favor and go here.
Good Chicken. You have three choices, whole chicken, half chicken, or half a dozen wings. I had the half chicken, which comes with a half a grilled chicken, tortillas, spanish rice, charros beans, and salsa. It was very tasty. Need to try the wings next time.
Guess if you do one thing right, that's what you should just do!. Chicken! Done right! You may go home smelling as if you manned a smoker all day but that is just part of the ambience and you don't have to pay extra for that. Great little place-everyone needs to come find out for themselves.
Delicious! I love that they only have three menu items. I got the half chicken and my husband got the wings. Both were great. I recommend!
Great price on amazing chicken. I can't believe I have worked in KCK for 5 years and yesterday was the first time I ate here. The menu is simple but the chicken is delicious. My two children (3 1/2 and 1 1/2) both seemed to love the chicken, beans and rice. Our family of four ate for under $15 with chicken left to take home.
Simple Yumminess!. You know when you go to low key joint and they have 3 menu options, its going to be great. If you don't like chicken, this is not the place for you. I love, love, loved the chicken! It may be the best grilled chicken I have ever had, and I enjoyed eating it with authentic tortillas, beans, and rice.
What else do you need for $6.50? This place will be in my regular lunch rotation for sure!
GREAT chicken !! One item on the menu and done right .
No frills, inexpensive (less than $10 for half a DELICIOUS chicken, beans, rice, salsa, aforementioned red onions, and two Jarritos), heavy carry out business, due to limited seating. Don't let the exterior fool you, the food is delightful and worth a try! Follow up with the Paleteria Chihuahua down the street for frozen treats!
Sickest chicken tacos in kc!
When you drive by El Pollo Rey, you can smell the wood smoke coming from the stack. They used to be located in an old hole in the wall store front, but have recently upgraded to an old Dairy Queen building. More capacity = more delicious chicken. I recommend this place to anyone looking for some great chicken or anything slightly outside the box. Plus you can't beat all of that food for just $6.50 per half chicken order.
Wow. This is probably the best chicken I've had in Kansas City, and I've tried quite a few. Juicy with crispy skin, smoked and finished on the grill. It comes with some tortillas, rice, beans, and salsa. No frills whatsoever, but you don't need them. Take in the experience. It was quite inexpensive too. Do yourself a favor and try this place ASAP!
This place is out of this world. Chicken tastes absolutely delicious. They grill chicken right in front of you on 10000% wood fired grill. Menu is super simple. You get 1/4, 1/2 or full chicken with sides. The meat is just super fresh and nothing like you have ever had before visiting this place.
This is an excellent restaurant that I would not have known about nor found without the help of a friend. The smell of the grilling chicken is heavenly and fascinating to watch. Not a fancy place by any means but certainly worth a visit and expect to smell like grilled chicken for awhile after enjoying your meal. I would definitely plan a return visit.
I was told that El Pollo Rey was an amazing place to eat and they were not wrong. I lived in the area in the 90s and I knew the area was always the best place to eat. A friend an I were in the area on a Sunday morning and we decided to give this place a try. Fresh tortilla, chicken cooked over an open pit of wood, no more was needed to draw us in. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was kissed with just the right amount of wood smoke. If we lived closer this would most definitely be our new family favorite place to eat. (Maybe y'all could expand into Lebanon or Bolivar Missouri and spread the goodness)
I've eaten chicken all over the world, and I honestly believe their's is among the best ever! Super great staff and awesome food! You HAVE to try it!
No obnoxious frills with this place. Wood fired chicken is what you are getting. Extremely delicious. I ordered the half chicken and it came with a side of salsa, tortillas, rice, and charro beans. Gladly would eat here again. Super quick service.
Seasoned Chicken grilled over a smoky hardwood fire right where you can watch as you walk in, Menu- Whole or Half or wings, Chicken that is. The restaurant name translates to "THE Chicken King"
Casual dining, order comes with Chicken obviously and a baggy of shredded purple onion, small container of rice, small cont. Of beans weany, house made salsa and a stack of tortillas you can add a avocado which I always do for a small fee, The wings are excellent and a must try, imported coca cola and other soft drinks, no alcohol. Simple yet unique ! I've been going here for many years, it becomes a occasional craving that nothing else satisfies except The Chicken King !
This is by far my number one option. Anytime somebody asks me to eat and they want me to suggest it’s always here! Super good wings , cannot compare to other places! Wings are super flavorful and cheap! Chicken and rice is a authentic taste to your rancho!
