This place is known for their Hawaiian style Oxtail Soup which is only available after 9 PM. The amount of oxtail in the soup is incredible for the price. The meat falls off of the bone into a simple broth with carrots, celery, and mushrooms. I like to spoon a bit of the broth over the bowl of rice. Make sure to suck and gnaw off all of the gelatinous bits from the bones! Eva and Patt were very attentive at the counter.
Affordable, delicious place in downtown Las Vegas. Do yourself a favor and try their oxtail soup at least once in your life. They only serve it after 9PM though and it usually has a long line but worth every wait. If you dont have a big party just go straight to the bar, you can order it from there. All other food they serve are delicious too and cheap.
Don’t let the place/decor fool you. Older crowd. But so nice and quiet. No cigarettes smell. You might even want to walk away to head to Redwood. Do not. I’m telling you. Try the prime rib. We are huge meat eaters and this place is exceptional.
Prime rib (what they are well known for) so of course we had to try it out. Brought my family of 9 out here. It was 5:30. We only waited about 6 minutes for them to set up seating and our table. No reservations. First come. 18.99 for a nice thick piece of prime rib - cooked to a medium rare to perfection. I mean absolute perfection! It comes with au jus and horseradish. The outer fat cap was seasoned very well and absolutely delicious. We know our meat and this was well worth the trip out there. If you want a huge piece of prime rib for a very good price. Try here. Cherry jubilee at the end was delicious and big enough for two people to share since only 5 of us got the prime rib (cherry jubilee comes with it). Cal Cut Prime Rib” which they label as the “Juiciest Prime Rib in Town”. It is VERY true. The meal comes with a house salad, and choice of steamed rice, baked potato, mashed potatoes, or fries and a fresh vegetable. Spare ribs were equally delicious and sadly we didn’t get to try the oxtail because they serve it after 9pm. But there was so much prime rib I could barely finish and I ALWAYS finish my meat.
We ordered alcohol but they get that from the casino so that was an extra price. For three wines and a mule. It was $24. They were the small plastic cups full. Still the Cab paired well with the prime rib.
total for our party of 9 - $237 including the 20% tip
Totally worth it. We will be bringing friends next time.
Long a place to get local food, this has morphed into a mainland menu with only minimal local food, restricted to the plate lunch of the day. On Wednesday the special was fried spam, Portuguese sausage and bbq ribs. But they still carry their famous oxtail soup from 9pm to 3am. Will come back to try that.
I really enjoyed the food that we ate there the Oxtail was tasty n my butterfish was great Prime Rib was a joy to enjoy n my youngest grand child said I'm so full I wanna save the rest. I wish there was more gravy. Otherwise AOK 😋😋
Love the oxtail soup but starting to get frustrated with the menu.
They keep changing hours of when you can order what. You don't know until you get there and then can't get what you planned. Prices also went up ... no more 10 dollar dinners.
This place is inside the California hotel and casino. It serves both regular diner food and Hawaiian and Asian dishes. I enjoyed their chicken wings and short rib appetizers. They have daily specials and I tried their chicken katsu and Ox tail stew (they also have a famous soup but served after 9pm). Both were delicious but the chicken katsu needed a better dipping sauce. They gave me A1 but a gravy or plum sauce would have made the dish perfect.
I liked that this is one of the few places I've eaten at that is still full capacity. They are busy but the lines move quickly. Great variety and good prices. 5 Stars.
Delicious Hawaiian classics. I had the Loco Moco everything else looked great
Excellent customer service. The food we had delicious:)
Was looking for a good prime rib special found this on google so decided to give it a try. There was a decently long line, but it went pretty quick. The host is friendly and greets you as soon as you get close to being seated. The restaurant is pretty big a lot of seating. Very busy. Our server was attentive and quick. Food came out fairly quick. Prices were good for the food. The prime rib was delicious. It came with veggies and your choice of either rice, mashed potato, or baked potato. It also came with a soup or salad and dessert after your meal. All for 13.99$ definitely can’t beat that. They also have other cuisines such as Hawaiian dishes, chinese dishes, and American classics. Definitely will be back!
Wow, all these years visiting Vegas and I had no idea this wonderful Hawaiian eatery was here! It's a hidden gem indeed. Nothing about the hotel name (California Hotel) not the restaurant name would indicate it's a haven for Hawaiin cuisine. Super delicious Ox Tail stew, Portuguese sausages and loco moco! Enjoy!!!
Came in the morning for steak and eggs. Over medium eggs cooked perfectly, steak to me had a somewhat odd texture/taste but not bad, great coffee. Before flying home I stopped back in for the oxtail soup. It had a very familiar taste and reminded me of my mom stew. It was very tasty and I appreciated the freshest ginger that was served along with it. I’ll be back.
Oxtail soup is their specialty that many regular customers come back for. A must try for newcomers. They only serve it starting 9pm until sold out or around 3am. $16.99 per serving *(as of July 2022) including a small bowl of rice. I am sure you can ask for more rice if not enough. Line seemed to be long but they moved very quickly. Call first. Parking is free with validation from the restaurant.
Always have to visit when visiting Las Vegas, been coming here for years and it’s always 10/10 food and service. Always happy to come back!! siony was great!!
We came here for the Oxtail soup but was equally blown away with their chili dish and their prime rib dinner (great prime rib at a great price). This was my first time at the California hotel and I was digging the island theme vibe. Hawaiian shirts and friendly staff makes for an awesome combo. Parking validation is easy as long as you spend at least $30 for dinner and the parking lot was easy to find a spot on a Sat night at around 8pm.
Also, after validation you get up to 4 hours to enjoy the festivities outside and explore the downtown area.
I do recommend coming to the Market Street Cafe between 8-8:30 if you're going to try the Oxtail soup as that starts at 9 and a fairly long line starts to form at around 9 (lastly, I can see what the fuss is all about as I don't know anywhere else in town that can serve this kind of delicious oxtail soup). Come on down, enjoy a piece of the Las Vegas downtown experience and bon appetit!
