First visit there. Got take out since I live in Topeka. Food tasted great. Quality service while there. They check your food before handing it over to be sure it's right. Will definitely visit again. The chicken breast was a little tough to chew through on the outer edges but was tender like it should be inside. A little more butter on the buns and bread would be better so it isn't semi dry in texture. Overall would recommend if you're tired of McDonald's or other fast food.
One of the best fast food joints ever. This location employs some great workers, food is always great and customer service excellent. We take our kids every Sunday and it is such a treat for us all. Great value!
Great food but prices are high. The Cayenne chicken sandwich and fried mushrooms are the best!
Friendly service. Multiple choices for sauces to go with each order. Food came out quick and was brought to our table. The chicken tenders and the wings are a hit.
The only loss of star was for the men's restroom that had a bad smell from what seamed to be from cleaning with stagnant water, or a not thoroughly cleaned mop head from the last few uses.
Pretty good most of the time. The last time I was in there, someone who may have worked there kept running behind the counter to get their food from the kitchen window.employees were standing there so I assumed this other person was off the clock. But the same employee who was watching this picked a receipt off the bottom of their shoe and then took a plate of food to a table. I really didn't appreciate that, and I appreciated it even less that the guy definitely tried to hide the fact that he didn't wash his hands. He slipped around the corner, pick the paper off his shoe, and then I saw him broom it up off the floor, and then grab the food when he came back into view a millisecond after the bottom disappeared. I'm not trying to go back into lockdown. I'm not looking to get ecoli. I'm not trying to hear that the chicken there makes people sick.
My food rocked on my last trip. FINALLY got toast that was actually toasted. Everything was prepared well. This one employee won't prevent me from coming back, but I will be wary of him handling my food from now on. I hope to not see him there again.
Detailed Review - Unexpected Results
I’ll be reviewing this based off of direct competitors being Canes (for the tenders) and Popeyes (for the sandwiches) - if you think Chick-fil-A belongs on that top dog list for the best chicken options than this isn’t the review for you…
Prices amongst all of them are roughly similar. Slims chickens does price a little higher though but nothing to much to count against them in my opinion.
Starting with the Tenders (Slims vs Canes)
Slims tenders are nice, delicate, and moist. Pretty standard sizes (usually about 5ish inch in length). They tear nicely and provide a nice buoyant spring when you bite into them. They use a thin batter that has very little to no crunch. Pairs nicely with different sauces. The tender by itself comes across with little seasoning/almost bland to the palette which is decently expected as far as fast food tenders go.
-Canes differences would be that they use a thicker batter so you have a little more of a satisfying crunch and the fingers are generally a little girthier.
-Canes sauce vs Slims sauce: not much here, this may be personal preference but I doubt it. Canes sauce takes it hands down. Slims is alright but it’s not canes sauce.
Sandwiches (Slims Vs Popeyes)- I got the chicken club sandwich for review. The sand which itself is loaded. The lettuce was great and not the cheap iceberg and a pretty standard vine tomato. Both provided a nice fresh cleanse to the palate. The bacon seemed like an afterthought. I hardly noticed it was there honestly. The chicken itself was pretty similar to the tenders as far as moistness and taste goes but this breast was a lot more crunchy. Nice batter in my opinion. However its an extremely small and thin breast. Atleast when you compare it to Popeyes.
-Popeyes main differences would be a plain Jane sandwich option with pickles, but the Breast in comparison makes Slims breast look like a kids sandwich. Comparing them side by side they would be about the same height, but remember, slims has layered lettuce, cheese, tomato, and bacon helping substantially with that height where Popeyes is just the chicken and a couple slices of pickle. Popeyes has a Very large, very juicy, very hard to beat sandwich and in my opinion slims doesn’t. Unless you like the LTC add ons but sacrifice chicken.
Where I see Slims “Fitting in.” They offer great side options that others don’t. Examples like Fried pickes and mushrooms. Which both are great. They are what you’d expect them to be. The slaw was what I expected, nothing crazy. Mac and cheese was super creamy and delicious. They also offer wings with a-lot of different sauces. I wasn’t as impressed with these but if your expecting sit down/bar quality sized wings than you wouldn’t be either. They are good for what they are though which is Fast food wings. The team at the Lawrence location are absolutely amazing people. I went there once and waited maybe 10ish minutes for my order (which I wasn’t upset about) because they had to drop fresh mushrooms and the manager gave me a free food coupon for waiting. The 5 star review mostly comes from the great experience I had both visits. Which is what it should be based off of.
Pros
-great staff
-great side options (if you want more than fries)
-thin batter for tenders (if that’s your thing)
-loaded chicken sandwiches
Cons
-mostly just the preferences on how you prefer your chicken. For me, canes and Popeyes still remain the best options for what they offer unless I’m in the mood for Fried mushrooms or pickles and in that case I’d probably consider if I’m in a time crunch and don’t have time to sit down.
All in all- I think they still deserve 5 stars for what they offer and the staff at the Lawrence location.
