This is the review I posted on my Facebook page, “The Dining Biker” thediningbiker:
I just love a double date with good friends (Pam and Rodney Altemus), and I especially love sharing a good meal with good friends. My husband, Dan and I thought Matt’s Fish Camp in Lewes was the perfect choice for our annual Christmas dinner out with our friends, and it didn’t disappoint any of us!
Matt’s cuisine is described as East Coast specialties, so the food ranges from Down East to Low Country. I’m a sucker for Low Country, and so is our friend, Rodney, so we opted for the shrimp and grits. This was my second time getting this dish, and the second time around was as good as the first. The grits are rough cut, so they fork up nice with the shrimp and andouille sausage. Mixed with shredded cheddar cheese, they are creamy and velvety. Some pepper jam tops it all, giving it a bit of sweetness and acidity, which gives it lovely balance. Of course, with southern food, one needs a side of collard greens. Matt’s does the best collard greens in the state. Hands down.
Dan chose the fried chicken and waffles. Those waffles were light as a feather, and the chicken wasn’t over-salty, nor was it greasy. Just right.
Pam decided on the seafood fra diavolo. The pasta was freshly made and cooked perfectly. The lobster tails were deep fried - unexpected, right? Apparently the breading was so light, it gave a nice crunch without altering the taste of the lobster. The sauce was not overly spicy, and the dish, though hearty, as a pasta dish would be expected to be, wasn’t unpleasantly heavy.
We all decided to treat ourselves to dessert, even though we were stuffed to the gills. I had the pretzel salad, which was so comforting, happy, old-fashioned. Dan had peanut butter s’mores icebox pie, which was rich and thick without being too dense. Pam and Rodney shared the pecan pie bread pudding with pumpkin ice cream. That plate was clean as a whistle when they were finished!
A bit about the restaurant itself - so, so clean. The bathrooms are immaculate. The kitchen is clean, as I caught several glimpses inside when the servers went in and out. The staff is incredibly friendly, and they hustle. I almost feel bad that I have nothing bad to say! Hmmm. They don’t take reservations. That sucks. Happy?
Best seafood dining in the area, I get the raw oysters and they never disappoint. Scallops are delicious and the calamari is second to none. The wait staff is highly motivated and helpful.
We love Matt's! We have never had a bad meal there. Last night we had the delicious jumbo soft crabs served on mashed potatoes with a lobster Demi-glacé and green beans. We have also enjoyed the fish and chips, crabcakes and fried oysters. The service is prompt and efficient. It's a fun place to get some excellent seafood.
This is an absolute MUST-TRY. 2 weeks later and I am still daydreaming about this food!
We tried this during our vacation and were sad that we don't live close enough to make this a regular dining spot.
The atmosphere was adorable and cozy yet still somewhat upscale. A very classy yet comfortable place.
The waiter was amazing and so polite. Really seemed to care about his job. Me and my husband kept joking that he was secretly Matt from Matt's Fish camp. He seemed to genuinely enjoy the place and knew the menu well. Everyone there seemed like they were happy to work there. This place is managed well!!!!
They have homemade soda's. We had the black cherry and ginger. They were delicious and such a fun addition to the menu.
The food was out of this world good! We had the crabby fries for an appetizer. They were so good we ordered another serving. I got the cold lobster roll. It was hands down the best lobster roll I have ever had. It was so delicious. My husband had the fried shrimp which was recommended by the waiter as the best fried shrimp he had ever had.... He was right. This dish was so simple and executed perfectly. The shrimp were large and fresh and so so good. You could also tell that everything that was fried was done in clean fresh oil.
All in all, I would eat here again and again.
Matt's Fish Camp in Lewes Delaware is a "must stop" every time we are in the area. The service remains excellent and the food... let me say it again...the food is delicious. Have you ever had a taste for something specific...and when you get it and it hits that taste bud, you're in heaven?... This is what happens when we get the Ipswich clams. Oh man, they are so good here. We have tried other places but they just don't measure up. Our daughter enjoyed the Lobster Cobb salad which was filling. I also had the Creme Brulee cheese cake with vanilla ice cream... Sorry no picture of the dessert... It was so good I ate it all before even thinking about a picture. Excellent service and food... will be back in a couple of days!
Just wonderful!! Light and refreshing venue. Professional and friendly staff. Awesome food! The soft shell crab BLT knocked our socks off! Avocado really worked with it. Such attention to detail with everything. Typical SolDel establishment - 1st class all the way!
Have been going to the Bethany Beach location for years, finally got to try the Lewes location. And its just as good. Very nice menu with lots of varied choices. The deviled eggs are always a hit. Don't know if we've every had something here we didn't like.
Sooo glad we check this restaurant out. Classic So Dell location! Went during happy hour for some awesome options with pricing for food and drinks.
I don’t even like clam chowder…and it ended up being one of my favorite items from dinner.
The short rib grilled cheese was beyond delicious. The happy hour burger was a little small, but for $8 it was worth it! Try the green sauce with fries, it’s soooo good.
The banana bread pudding was perfect and so nice and warm with ice cream.
The stand out was the drinks. Highly recommend the goodfella which is basically a Spicy margarita.
I can not wait to go back!
PS - wasn’t a fan of the grits.
This place was a great first meal in Delaware. Great service and literally the best chicken dish I have ever had. We will be back on our next visit.
Was really looking forward to trying this place... Was just ok. Highlights were the cocktails and the clam chowder, although both priced higher than expected. Chowder was top 5! Calamari and onion rings are a hard pass. Fish sandwich was super dry, had to ask what kind of fish we were eating. They said cod but I'm sure it wasn't.
Happy hour is only for their 8 seat bar, so go early if you want$1 off a bowl of soup.
Had the traditional Lobster roll and opted to upgrade to the crab fries. The Lobster roll was very tasty. The crab fries were different and kind of reminded me of gravy with crab in it. The service was also good, so I'd definitely recommend it.
