Yummy experience, stopped here on a very cold winter night. First time and what a great experience... The menu was a great surprise, many real homemade soups and big selections of hot and cold sandwiches. I recommend a speedy open faced sandwich with Swiss cheese. Kim had fried balcony provolone on a pretzel roll. Plenty of beers and mixed drinks. Break the normal dinner and take a drive to Lima. Warm homemade chocolate chip with your check!

The soup...it's like a nice warm hug. I will one million percent come back here and also buy the soup cookbook. The premises are aging as only old buildings can be and the bathroom is functional but not lovely. But this trip isn't about the bathroom-- make it for the soup and the multi-generation family that's running the place.

Had lunch in this magnificent building. Gorgeous interior, friendly staff, great food. Soups are their specialty and they were very yummy . Had a turkey Reuben sandwich that had lots of meat and great rye bread. Only one waitress but the people in the back kept things moving helping her out. Lovely little town. Stopped at the farmers market across the street... Tuesday afternoon.

What I call a time warp business. Great history and food.

Excellent place to get a variety of soups and sandwiches. The person manning the bar was incredibly friendly as well. Good place to stop by if you're passing by or if you're just in the mood for some soul warming soup.

If you love soup, this is THE place for you! They have 5-6 different soups daily, including chilled soups in warmer weather. Also have a nice sandwich menu. And you get a homemade cookie with your bill. Lovely historical building lends a nice atmosphere.

Excellent homemade soup and sandwiches. The food was delicious and hot, the way it is supposed to be served, and the beer was nice and cold. I always like trying soups when I eat out. I had the yellow split soup and my wife had the garbage plate soup, both were served nice and hot and were very good. My wife also enjoyed her buffalo chicken wing wrap, as I did a turkey reuben on rye. Again, both sandwiches were served nice and hot. We have lived south of Lima for many years and wish we had tried the American Hotel sooner. We'll definitely be back.

Great soup. Old school, I mean real old school sandwiches. Where else can you get a limburger cheese sandwich? Or a liverwurst sandwich. Did I mention absolutely delicious soup. If you love an old building with some charm this should be on your list. Again did I say the soup is incredible.

Chicken salad was amazing and fresh! The owners are brilliant cooks and very sincere, kind people. EXCELLENT prices for what you get. Split pea was just like mom's!! Amazing!! And the Garbage Plate soup was so tasty! The inside is truly old-timey and authentic, been in operation for almost 100 years!! I would no doubt go again :) 😁👍👍👍

Love the place. Have gone dozens of times in past 15 years. 4 to 8 soups every day that are excellent. Great sandwiches and cold beer. Ya, the 150 year old place is rustic, but that adds to the charm. My g-friend can't wait to go back.

Beautiful, historical hotel owned by the same family for 99 years! They still do things the old fashioned way, even using the old antique cash register! A simple menu with a choice of 7 or 8 homemade soups that continually change. You can even get a limburger cheese or liverwurst sandwich. Their gyros looked wonderful. Free cookie with your check is a nice touch!

What a great piece of history and excellent staff! Friendly and accommodating and Family owned for 99 years! A must see if you are in the area! Be sure to read all the articles on the walls and meet Pat and his sister Rose, 3rd generation owners. Her soups are amazing and those "potato chip" cookies! Yummy!!!

Hands down the best soup you'll eat. I don't care what you're mother made you growing up this is the best soup. They always have 4-5 choices, pair that up with a chicken spiedie with sauteed onions and melted cheese and you're in for a nice afternoon. One of my favorite places to go when I visit home.

They always have 7 or 8 hand made soups from their list of 60 or so varieties. They are always hearty and delicious. Nice sandwich selection to go with the soups! No real dinner menu, but soup and a sandwich is definitely enough for dinner!!

The place is a relic of time. The staff felt like family, no pretense and the soup was true to its fame. However... if I did not see the reviews I wouldn't have given it a chance. Place could use some fixing. But give it a chance.
