Daichan was recommended by my Japanese colleagues as “authentic” so I was very excited to try it. Absolutely loved everything about the place. The food and service were fantastic. I love eating at unassuming restaurants that focus on food and service vs trying to be fancy. It’s a small restaurant that gets very busy so you will need to be patient. Can’t wait to go back and try all the other dishes.
I’ve always been intrigued by the sign that reads “Japanese Soul Food “. I ventured in tonight, and was pleasantly surprised at the charm and vibe of the restaurant. Service was attentive and consistent. I asked for my server’s recommendation, and she told me to go with the combination pole bowl.
It did not disappoint, the flavors were subtle yet bold and the sake selection was great.
I will be back for sure and recommend this to anyone who is willing to stroll off the beaten path and have an amazing meal at a moderate price point.
So much delicious Japanese Comfort Food, YUM!
I'd heard of this spot before and the yummy Japanese food here, and finally got around to giving it a try - I most certainly feel glad that I did!
I grew up with many of the staples here being favorites of mine from my Japanese grandmother whenever we would visit her.
From the House Udon to the Daichan Special, I thought the prices were great for a variety of tasty and flavorful plates and bowls of udon to enjoy!
Something to keep in mind - it fills up quite fast inside! The space is packed with a good amount of tables, but it's still a bit small. While we arrived before 6PM and were able to be seated right away, I soon noticed a line of people forming outside, waiting for tables to open up.
Speaking of the interior, it's so quirky and cozy inside, with scores of beautiful and colorful Japanese artwork and decor lining all the walls and hanging from the ceiling.
Such a fun and unique dining space to enjoy!
Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Daichan, and highly recommend giving it a visit - at least once, even if you're not a huge fan of Japanese cuisine!
The best japanese restaurant I have ever visited. The food is outstanding and also the service is great. We ate the fried tofu and curry based on her recommendation. It was so good that we came back and ordered the same dish again.
I first came to this place in early 2000's.. the food was AMAZING, service was amazing, decor was covering every square inch! It truly was a little escape off the Blvd... I moved out of state and we recently visited and I got some lunch. So sad, the service was lackluster and all the decor was almost gone :/ I came here with all those memories and it seems like it's gone downhill. I hope they're doing okay and get up to speed with service and how it used to be!!
Absolutely delicious food!!! I wish we'd discovered it earlier. I loved their chicken katsu and squid. All of our food was good. The chicken katsu plates even came with sides that were equally good. Top tier rice.
This place is sooo good I had the pork katsu with curry. Cleaned the whole plate! It comes with rice. My friend got the Hawaiian roll and tried one you can never go wrong with spam. Of course I had to get some sehmi salmon fresh and very tasty. One of the best thing about this place is the look they have all shorts of cool stuff on the walls.
Absolutely adorable place with super nice staff and the best comfort food!! Not pictured was the garlic halibut and pork katsu with the seaweed rice option. Oishii!!!
house sake (hot), fish soup hot, broiled mackerel oh baby was this a fine meal i would eat it again if i wasn’t banned from LA, California. . mm. very cozy dining room, could hang out in there all day but cant (wife and kids)
One of my new fave restaurants. Cute, intimate little restaurant with friendly staff and homemade Japanese soul food. Didn’t try their fish dishes yet but everything else was amazing. Pumpkin appetizer is a must try
Hands down this is my favorite local haunt in LA. The staff here are so incredibly welcoming and kind and the interior, packed with Japanese art and other tchotchkes, provide a fun, casual ambiance to dine in. When I come here, I feel like I was invited over for dinner at someone’s home. The food is cooked with just as much care as their service. Their beef sukiyaki and katsu bowls are especially tasty and comforting - just the thing to eat after a long day. Other great menu items are their stuffed lotus root and coquette for starters, as well as their soba and poke bowls for something a little more refreshing on a hot day. If you haven’t been here, you absolutely need to check it out.
Yummy little restaurant with lots of character. It’s the hipster flip side to a minimalist restaurant. Walls covered in cool photos and posters, decorations, and all kinds of cool things and people to look at. I loved the variety of the menu and know I’ve gotta come back to try more things. Service was great. Even though there was a sign up, we got in pretty quickly. Got the udon and a sashimi over rice dish. I’d definitely come back. I want to try the katsu curry next time!
The perfect place. So wholesome, delicious food, wonderful staff, and a rich history of serving the perfect vibe / cuisine. A true valley staple
Great Japanese food, excellent broiled mackerel, which is hard to do well. The kids' combo meals were also good, teriyaki not too sweet.
I felt so cozy here. Small little hole in the wall family restaurant. Best beef teriyaki I’ve had, so soft and tender. Some of the best & freshest yellow tail sashimi I’ve had as well!
I can not tell you, how much I love this place. I think it gets overlooked frequently because it’s on sushi row. I have been coming here for about 20 years. The food is always fresh and so good. I crave multiple dishes from time to time. Its honestly hard to pick my favorite. If you are looking for a local hidden gem, this is it!
Best Japanese Soul Food. Love the home cooked meal style. Ordered my favorite - chicken katsu donburi. Not pictured is the baby squid in garlic ponzu sauce. Just delicious!
