Really good food!
I just have very high standards........( most would probably give 5 stars)
My lunch was great, ate every bite. To me, just a bit too sweet. The BBQ beans, & sweet BBQ sauce were a bit over the top for me.
However; the regular flavored BBQ sauce just lacked in flavor.
The garlic toast is AMAZING! Got it with my brisket sandwich. The best $0.75 I've ever spent.
If you like wood smoked BBQ......... this place is worth your time!
If you're looking for great barbecue then this is the place. Choose from regular or spicy barbecue sauce. The baked beans are fantastic and so are the french fries. The wait staff is incredibly friendly and they will steer you toward a wonderful meal. Very reasonable prices too and they have a seniors menu with a platter that will definitely fill your tummy.
This place is a staple in the valley. I've been coming here for 30 plus years. The family runs business is something to visit at least once in your life. Don't forget to ask for the pickles

excellent barbecue spot.
Hot links are spicy enough and tasty (and served with maple syrup). Ribs were awesome. they are not served completely melted in bbq sauce. The sauce is on the side so you can bathe them as you want
Tater tots are original and very good. not industrial stuff but home made. try them.
the coleslaw is the best coleslaw I ever had. nothing like those over creamy stuff you can find. it got taste and flavor, and they put some spice or something that gives it a really good going. excellent stuff.
The potato salad was very good too.
the spicy barbecue sauce had a good kick, but nothing to make you a fire breather.
there are a lot of nice things on the lenu, and it's hard to choose, as all is good.
Review for March 2nd 2022. The Bear Pit Barbecue Restaurant is located in the heart of the Mission Hills California. It's in the Los Angeles County within the San Fernando Valley. Adjacent to the 118 freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard. Let me start off by saying that I absolutely appreciate the customer service. It goes without saying that the barbecue ribs here are absolutely to die for. I'm not guilty, to say that I love BBQ ribs. Thank you so much for the attention to service that you guys provide and all the great quality food that you have. Also perfect spot for a coffee with your lunch.
Been a great place for 40+ years! The food is still great. We have the same waitress every time we go whose fantastic! The atmosphere is usually very quiet (but we go during 2-4 p.m.) but the decor does need an update!
The Bear Pit is something my wife has talked about for years, we finally got a chance the visit it tonight. Food was great, wife had a lamb sandwich and loved it.
I had a huge sample platter, with beef and pork short ribs plus sliced beef and ham. It was fantastic. The ribs are not coated with rub or sauced but they give you alot of sauce to apply as you wish.
Really good BBQ. The prices are reasonable, considering what you get. I got the baby back ribs (1/2 rack), potato salad, beans, slaw, and garlic bread, for $24.
The original bbq sauce is fairly mild, not spicy, but good flavor.
The ribs were great, very meaty, not dry and very little fat. All sides were good, with the potato salad being mustard style.
It’s a old school restaurant that could definitely use updating (old light fixtures with mismatched lamps) and old pictures of long dead celebrity guests. So if you ignore your immediate surroundings and concentrate on the food, it’s a great place for BBQ.

It's been around longer than I have. There's a good reason for that. As always a excellent place to go if you like real BBQ.
The turkey and the tri tip were absolutely delicious. However, the beef rack/ribs and the chicken were slightly overcooked (nothing inedible tho) and there was a lot of smoke in the dining room air. If you're sensitive to smoke then I recommend not going but otherwise, I'd say it was very enjoyable.
Haven't been back in yrs but was and is by far best food I've ever had, plus when I was there the veggies bowl had hot yellow peppers!, I would eat all of them lol

Place looks a little aged; closed almost.
But the real ones know.
Looks like this restaurant has been here a while I just never had the chance to visit it, now that I did! It’s the new bbq spot! Ordered beee ribs and they were awesome! Cooked to perfection!will be bringing the family here to try it out. Their home made baked beans fabulous.try it for yourself
