Great food, artisan beer, and mostly a down to earth crowd. Be careful going at night, as it is located in Highland Park, which is a notorious gang area. If you're not from the area make sure your head is on a swivle and you'll be okay.
Fun but.... I had a good time here, great look and I like the fresh air feel of the front. My date, who in The York's defense hates most everything, but I agree with him on these points - menu on wall was cool but we missed somethings we'd probably have ordered. Didn't like ordering from the bar, the waitress that delivered our food didn't know exactly how we'd ordered it so it was wrong. They were nice and fixed it but it wasn't fast. You're paying waiter prices but you have to do all the work to get their attention for reflills, etc. That said, we had a good time and will go back.
Not perfect, but pretty damn good. I like this place, it used to be the Wild Hare, but has been re born into a swanky pub. The drinks are good, and the ambiance is great. The food situation is a little off, but workable.
Things I don't like:
You have to order food at the bar and they give you a number to take back to your table, and it can take awhile to get the bar keeps attention.
You have to read the menu off of huge chalkboards that line the walls, nice concept but doesn't work.
The food is overpriced and they haven't worked out all the kinks in the kitchen yet . When my husband asked for a side of mayo he was told that they did not have any mayo...huh?
What I Like:
The space
The menu if prepared well and if the prices were slashed. $12 for greasy fish and chips is lame, we are in Highland Park people, let's not forget that.
The cocktails
Overall, I am thrilled to have the York in my neighborhood.
The York in Highland Park has one of the best burgers in LA, hands down. It’s lavished in spicy mayo, pickled onions and cheddar, all of which equal gastro-masterpiece. Especially if you have the guts to get it medium-rare.
The York on York in Highland Park celebrated its third birthday yesterday (on the dot - it officially opened July 12th, 2007) by offering drink specials and passed apps well into the early morning of July 12th, 2010.
I never knew there was such a great gastropub so near Pasadena! The York is located in Highland Park, in between Pasadena and downtown LA. Now I don't have to necessarily go to Father's Office (although the draft beer selection at FO is significantly larg
Can’t really go wrong here. Everything is made well here (used to work here so can vouch for the process, at least as it was awhile ago). The burgers are go to can’t miss. Love the fries. You can share an order of them with one or two people. Sriracha wings are the best I’ve ever had. Been chasing that high for awhile and nothing quite comes close. You are gonna pay a bit more than a regular gastropub place but it’s worth it.
For an emergency lunch right before a meeting, this place did well. I admit, it was a Friday fish n chippy deal but I bought resist and it was quite yummy. The fries were also a bit special. And the bartender kept my ginger ale topped up - legend!
Stopped by for the first time since moving to the area last week and we weren’t disappointed.
The food is not at all what you’d expect in a bar setting. They have vegetarian options, low calorie options and everything is made and staged like a fine dining establishment. Their sandwiches and burgers are spot on, and their beer list is amazing.
While we were there, on a Thursday early evening, a band was setting up. At first, we were a bit put off, surprised a band would be playing at a time like this (admittedly, we came at an “off time” on purpose to have a quieter evening). But turns out, the band had a chill, indie style sound and only added to the atmosphere and experience. Good stuff.
We’ll definitely come back again!
Local Bar in Highland Park!
Great place hang out...have a drink or two. They carry selves serve menu...walk up to bar...finger foods and some heavy dishes..little over priced. Ambiance is cool...soft lighting...some t.v.s but not sports bar. They have a small stage towards entrance...music..bands. Music blasting overhead is nice...decor compliments location. Booths and bar seating.
