Being from New England I KNOW great fish and onion rings. I know a little bit about beignets too from eating them in New Orleans and making them myself. David and his crew are spot on with everything I mentioned and I look forward to trying more of the fare at The Fish House and Cafe Beignet. The food is served piping hot, fresh and prepared exactly as it should be. Fish is flakey and has the right taste. Onion rings are superb and beignets could compete with those found in the French Quarter, which is how I compare my own. I am just sorry I waited so long to try this great spot for seafood and beignets.
Great atmosphere for an order at the counter fish place. Good prices for large portions and really great tasting fish. Wish the beignets were better, they were very chewy but maybe that's just their style of beignet.
Not from Louisville, but considering a move after eating at The Fish House. Absolutely delicious and we will definitely return! We loved our lunch at the Fish House. Tasty, fresh fried fish... Even the sides are good. Grab a beer and make sure to try the jalapeño tarter sauce!

The Green River style (cornmeal batter) fried fish (I like mine on rye) is absolutely delicious. Don't expect anything fancy but its a great choice for maybe the best fish sandwich in the city.
I have been here many times… With exceptional food and outstanding service! I would recommend eating here to anyone. Although the size of the restaurant is limited, the food is definitely worth it even if you have to take it home.
Jalapeño tarter sauce...need I say more? If so, then I should also mention the beignets they make on the weekends. They usually create a specialty one and you should probably order it.
This place is wonderful. Best fish sandwich in town. The service is always friendly and I've never had a bad meal. Simple food done right. The breading isn't heavy (think Long john silvers) it's a light coating of flavorful batter. I hate eating fried fish that's all breading. Only complaint is parking. Park on the street the parking lot is a death trap.
The best Beignets you will find anywhere. They are even better that at the Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. You can't beat that and right in our own backyard.
Everyone is so friendly and the place is cozy. You won't be disappointed.

The parking lot is kind of small, but as long as you reserve a table you'll definitely get in, and trust me you're going to want to. The environment was very "Mom and Pops" style. The owner of the restaurant was the one who took our order, and was extremely polite; he definitely created a rapport with us. Being a military veteran himself we were able to exchange stories and talk about our history and the background of Fort Knox. We ordered our meals, sat in the indoor area and the food arrived about 10 minutes later. My catfish sandwich, although it came out on to regularize slices of rye bread, was phenomenal. The fried fillet was just crispy on the outside but still moist on the inside, not typical of most fried food. It didn't lose any of the flavor; and my friends haddock was just as good. The french fries are also amazing, just crispy on the outside, as most French fries should be but, extremely fluffy on the inside and not overdone. They hardly had any seasoning which helped increase the overall flavor of the French fry; It didn't overwhelm it. tartar sauce is made in house, both original and jalapeno, and the jalapeno that we tried was delicious. You could tell that he used just enough dill to create the flavor without overwhelming it, and the only use the shell of the jalapeno with no seeds so it wasn't extremely spicy. To finish up the meal we ordered a three-count of beignets, which arrived after about 5 minutes. although they were a little crunchier than I had remembered, the inside was impeccable and the amount of powdered sugar was perfect proportion. Definitely deserving of the 4.5 out of 5 stars and we will definitely be visiting again even though it was about a 30 minute drive to get here.
The Fish House is Awesome. In KY for an archery competition and found the Fish House. Wonderful hospitality and incredible food.
The food is fabulous, everyone is super-friendly, the atmosphere is cozy. The rating says single $ but it was a little closer to $$ by the time I left a tip that I thought was appropriate to the service. Can't wait to go back!!!
We loved it! The oysters were awesome everything came out hot and fast and they were in the middle of a lunch rush! Can't wait to come back!
Love this family own, family run restaurant. From top to bottom, soup to nuts, everything about this place reminds me of what it's like to be a living part of this community. From the father & son business built from the ground up, to the authentic and unique recipe for the batter of each type of fish. I love this place with all my heart. These folks are genuine, they're friendly, they're down to earth, they remember your name and face if you come often enough. The food is unpretentious and down home. You must try the clam chowder, it's delicious. My usual is to order just a pound of each fish, and bring a friend.
My only wish is the city for less pretentious and picky people, go find trouble elsewhere please! ...and let me have my fish!
Really amazing; we went on a whim without any idea of what to expect and it was beyond delicious. We'll be back whenever we return to the area.
Very good place to eat. Got the early and was worried there was no one there. By the time we left it was full. Great Chowder.
I don't review restaurants ever. I only do it when I really love a place. I love The Fish House. It's got a great feel to the place. Very haphazard and thrown together, (almost like a boat dock). That's exactly the type of character you want to see in a fish joint. Great patio out front. As for the fish, the Scrod and Haddock are great. They serve very large pieces too. No skimping. Other items worth mentioning: the jalapeño tartar sauce, the mac and cheese and the high puppies are all wonderful. Also, having tried the beignets in NOLA, I can say, Cafe Beignets are just a good. I eat here almost once a week... I'm actually eating here as I type this! Check it out!
Southern Hospitality and Down Home Food. First, I've got to give KUDOs to the owner, Dave, for making 2 Nashville natives and 2 Kentuckians feel welcome from the moment we came inside until we left after dinner. The experience was great, the food tasty, and the service outstanding. My brother-in-law has been eating there for lunch off & on for several years, and treated us to dinner when we came to town.
All four of us had the scrod with assorted types of bread and sides. Scrod is usually either cod, haddock, or other meaty, northern ocean, white fish. So, take your pick. I don't know which it was, but I would have been satisfied with any of them since the taste was wonderful. The fish seemed to be coated with a corn meal breading, and it added some good flavor to the dish. I had 3 really large pieces of scrod in my dinner plate, and all were properly prepared. All were in agreement that the fish was very tasty. In addition, I had french fries, their mayonnaise based slaw (Mad Mary's), seafood chowder, some hush puppies, and iced tea. My spouse had the silver dollar sized potato cakes for a side rather than fries.
The seafood chowder was in reality clam chowder. If there were other types of seafood in it, I could not determine or recognize it. This version was a little thin for me, but the taste was very good. I prefer a much thicker version, but this was still a good choice. The slaw was a typical mayonnaise version, but frankly a much better version that others than I've had. A vinegar based slaw was also available. The french fries were properly fried, not real greasy with just the right amount of salt. I tasted my spouse's potato cakes, and they were as good or better than the fries. I would probably order the potato cakes next time in lieu of the fries.
Finally, all of us ordered the beignet for dessert. This New Orleans treat was delicious, loaded with powdered sugar, and a real treat. Just wish I had ordered some coffee to go with it. When you go there, do your self an indulgent favor, and order at least one of the beignets.
I can't comment specifically on the price, since the tab was picked up by my brother in law. However, after having reviewed the menu, it would appear that the tab excluding any tax & tip was between 55 and 60 dollars for the 4 of us.
Next time you are in the Highlands in Louisville, stop at this local "hole-in-the wall" restaurant. You will be pleased. Thanks again to David for the wonderful dinner.
One of the pricier fried fish joints in town, but nice staff, good atmosphere, good breading and decent fried grease balls
Yummmmmm. Wonderful place. It attracts friendly people too. The fish sandwiches are very good and the beignets are are terrific on the weekends. Great Place!
Love this place. Beignets are delcious and I especially love their Sunday omelettes.
Their fried haddock and cod are consistently good and their jalapeño tartar sauce is outstanding. My fried fish go to place!
Beignets! If you’ve ever had them, the word alone can make your mouth water. I had an order of three of them earlier tonight and they were so warm, fresh and lip smacking that I practically drooled.
For the uninitiated, a beignet (pronounced Bean-YAY) is a hollow French pastry, fried then smothered in powdered sugar. While they are considered a breakfast item, many tourists are introduced to these square French -style doughnuts in the wee hours of the morning at the Café du Monde after a night on Bourbon Street. Beignets were brought in by the Acadians, who after settling in Louisiana became later known as Cajuns.
If anyplace else in Louisville has them, it’s news to me, but there they were on the menu at The Fish House. Not only were they on the menu, but a note said “Beignets available at all hours of operation.” As I settled down to wait maybe six of eight minutes for my order, I noted a small but steady trickle of customers, many of whom opted for carryout. In no time at all, out came my order.
So taken was I with finding beignets here in Louisville, the excellent fresh scrod sandwich that accompanied them became an afterthought. However a taste of jalapeño tartar sauce from the various dispensers did catch my attention. The sandwich on rye had two plump fillets with a “Green River style” cornmeal breading. It was succulent and, at a mere $4.95, strikes me as maybe the best fish sandwich anywhere for that money, both in quantity and taste. It was great!
But, for this evening, the beignet held center stage for me. Beignets are traditionally prepared right before consumption, to be eaten fresh and hot. Scrumptious! Think of getting a fresh Krispy Kreme doughnut hot off the line and then take it up several notches on the delectability scale. The last tidbit of my beignets was devoured as soon as I took the photo.
I came for the fish, but I am going back, with my friends, for both fish and beignets!
Awesome fish sandwich!. Being a lover of fried fish and, after reading how well the reviewers on this site like this place, I just had to try it. Many is the time I have heard talk of a fish sammidge that is just off the chain delicious at a particular restaurant, only to find out upon visiting that it is just mediocre or worse. My wife and I went to the Fish House for dinner last night and, I must say, it is one of the few places in the area serving fish that delivers as promised, and then some. IT WAS CRAZY GOOD!
The hunks of fish on the sammy were thick, moist, piping hot and perfectly seasoned. That is one of my pet peeves: places that serve you little thin, squimpy pieces of fish that are mostly breading. It's almost like they pound them out thin to more efficiently vacuum the frog skins from your wallet. But you won't find that here. Speaking of breading, my wife and I both loved the peppery breading they use on the fish. We also shared an order of fries, a small handful of shrimp and a rolled oyster, all of which were also very good. I don't think I have ever had french fries that were seasoned just like the ones they serve here. They are scrumptious!
You can taste the love that goes into the preparation of the food here. As Guy Fieri says, it is just "out of bounds." The Fish House is easily in the top two or three best places in Kentuckiana if you are on a quest for some thick, delicious filets of fried fish. I'll have another to go please, on rye.
And their Jalapeno Tartar Sauce? All I can say is you better make sure you are near a chair, because your knees will buckle the moment it touches your lips. It is really that good. While on the subject of good, good luck finding a parking place at this Germantown gem.
Best Fish Sandwich In Town!. This is a seriously good place for fresh fish sandwiches and seafood! I haven't tried the other items yet, but I will soon! They have daily specials and soups as well. Their fish is breaded just right with a cornmeal breading and cooked to perfection, and the french fries have a nice seasoning on them as well. IMO, this is the ONLY place to go for a good quality, fresh fish sandwich at a good price!
Great Fish!. I don't care for fish in general. It's usually too greasy or just too darn fishy for me to really enjoy. But the haddock sandwich my boyfriend got here last week is changing my mind. The fish was flaky, delicate, moist without being gross, and absolutely delicious. I ended up eating way more than my stated "just a little bit." It was just too good! This weekend we're going back and I'm getting my own.
And that's saying nothing of the beignets, which are amazing. They came out warm and covered in powdered sugar and were just deeeelish. If you ever liked funnel cakes, you're doing yourself a disservice not to eat one or three of these little puffs of fried dough. Don't think about the calories, just chew.
Favorite Fried Fish Joint. The Fish House has great fried scrod. The onion rings, fries and slaw are pretty good too.
Dave (owner) makes his own tartar sauces which are excellent, one is a jalapeno style tartar sauce that's tangy..
IMO, this place is much, much better than The Fishery, Mike Linnings or Kingfish.
Great food, and friendly atmosphere was even better. On our first visit there recently, we told David (owner?) that we were newcomers, and he took the time to explain their menu. He asked my name, shook my hand, and genuinely thanked us for trying out his restaurant. He checked on us while eating their delicious fish. Their optional jalapeño tartar sauce is awesome. Beignet's taste just like the famous ones I've had in New Orleans. We've been back once since original visit, with same results on food and friendliness. You rarely get both in a restaurant nowadays! Thank you!
Boston Chowda in Louisville!. I used to live N. Shore in the Boston area and had access some of the best seafood a few steps from my front door. The Fish House is as if one of those harborside New England restaurants was picked up and dropped right in the heart of Louisville. Not only is the best seafood I've had in LV, its one of the best I've had anywhere!
Great food, service! The beignets make me say yeah! Unfortunately, after a delicious meal there is the coffee. It is the Worst in town.
Great breakfast, good fish. Recently discovered this place, practically across the street from Lynn's cafe. If you don't want to deal with the claustrophia and volume at Lynn's, this is a great alternative for breakfast on the weekends.
The sausage links are out of this world. Have also tried the egg in a hole, omelet, and potato cakes and we will definitely be returning.
Don't overlook the fish, either. Have tried the haddock and the catfish and both were quite good. The catfish definitely had some Orleans style kick.
Great Fish Sandwich. They serve a great fish on rye for $4.95! It is awesome!!
One of the best fish sandwiches in town! Keep up the good work!! I will be back.

Cozy and the best beignet's out of N.O.. Another amazing experience at a cozy little joint hidden in Louisville. We stopped for cafe' and beignet's on our way home. Best Beignets outside the French Quarter! Bravo!
Delicious Breakfast. I ate Sunday breakfast and it was great. The service was good and very friendly. The food came out fast. The egg in the hole was good, although the white bread used was a little underwhelming. The home fries were spot on and the beignets were quite tasty. I would love to go back for additional breakfast dishes or dinner at another time.
My favorite breakfast treat!. This is where I take out of town guests for a weekend breakfast - unfortunately they don't serve it throughout the week. The owner takes your order. Food is served very casually keeping it cheap which I appreciate. That being said it's stick to your bones, delicious goodness. The only place in town I'll order an omelette. The fried potatoes are outta control and don't ever skip the beignets!
Best Fish Sandwich in Louisville. Simply the Best - Limited seating for lunch come early or call ahead.
Cafe Beignet for breakfast. Omelette du jour, pigs, potato pancakes were delicious. The beignets were amazing. Worth the trip.
Great weekend breakfast. Love the Cafe Beignet New Orleans-style breakfast! I recommend the delicious potato pancakes side, served with sour cream and apple sauce, eggs any style, and beignets dipped in your chicory coffee. The standard beignets are powdered or plain, and there's always a special beignet flavor on the board.
...but I honestly have nothing bad to say about Cafe Beignet/The Fish house. Here is usually the part where I would tell you where it is, BUT YOU GUYS HAVE GOOGLE AND I AM TOO LAZY. It’s close you guys. Right next to Lynn’s Paradise Cafe but SO MUCH CHEAPER. It’s only open for breakfast weekend mornings, but boy is it worth a visit.
Who would have guessed that you could get an amazing breakfast in a restaurant that cranks out fried fish all week? Seeing happens to be believing...or more appropriately...eating happens to be believing in this case.
First time ever eating here and we will be coming back! Friendly staff, great selection of fish and seafood. I was really amazed how my Haddock fish sandwich was larger than my plate! Cole slaw, and French Fries was awesome. If you love fresh fish and seafood, you need to visit The Fish House.. #1 in my book
First time here, and it was absolutely amazing. Simple menu that's easy to read and has a wide variety. The catfish was absolutely perfect, the onion rings I could have ate from open to close - they're so good! Homemade mac and cheese was super as well. The restaurant is clean and the staff were extremely nice and inviting. Mike Lennigs doesn't hold a candle to The Fish House.
If I could give them a 10 I would. First off let me say this is the only restaurant that I know of in America that had Gluten Free fish and chips!!!!! Not to mention hush puppies and more. While it may the only it would have been the best regardless. This place is legit. Well worth the drive from Atlanta to enjoy this. They have dedicated fryers and very knowledgeable about gluten free. Sorry about the photo I was digging in before I remembered to take one.
The food was delicious, the staff were incredibly friendly, and the service was fast. I couldn't have been happier with my clam strips dinner to-go, which came with condiments thoughtfully packed. I would also recommend their beignets, available all day!
This one is an oldie but goodie! What a wonderful treat to sit in a restaurant that cares about the overall experience. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. All the condiments were clean and available. The sweet tea didn't stop....it was fresh brewed!
Food was delicious , fresh and served hot. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The parking can be tricky when busy but this place is definitely worth a visit. We got catfish sandwiches with Mac and Cheese, Fries and Potato Cakes. Everything was seasoned great and full of flavor. Food came out so hot we had to wait a couple minutes to dive in which is somebody I’ll never complain about lol. She tried the jalapeño tartar. It looks weird but she said it tasted good but couldn’t really taste the jalapeño. We also got some beignets and they were good and fresh as well. I will definitely return and try other items
Loved the Fish House. Homemade hand breaded fish- can’t beat it. Gentleman working the register was kind as well.
The food is served fresh with ample portions. The fries were my favorite item. They are perfectly seasoned. The fish is good, but I prefer a more flavorful batter. (I'm a tough critic with fried catfish. It is my most favorite comfort food as it reminds me of my Grandma.) I really liked the beignets. (They were a random, delicious dessert.)
Tasty food and a good price. The catfish platter was solid and plentiful, and the slaw and fries were especially delicious. Some review complained of cleanliness, but I loved the laidback and unique vibe. Enjoy some good country food for lunch or dinner here.
I've been coming here for years. Best fish in Louisville by far and a great atmosphere. I love the fish and shrimp and the homemade tartar sauce is some of the best I've ever had.
Don't let the "hole in the wall" appearance fool you...THE FISH HOUSE IS FABULOUS! Best breakfast and fish in town with super friendly staff. Our son turned us onto this place and we love it!
Loved this casual restaurant with delicious food. We shared the pound of white fish and enjoyed loads of sides. Beer and seltzers are available. Don’t forget dessert!
Such a gem in Louisville. The food has been excellent all hundred times I’ve been there. Great service. The owner and his son are awesome. If you haven’t tried the Fish House- get off your butt and get over there!
All food was great and the people there were soooo friendly. Very reasonable on their pricing.
The fried mushrooms we fantastic and fresh, not the normal frozen type one from other places. The catfish fillets were huge
First time visiting from Michigan and I’ll definitely be back. The fried catfish was so delicious. 😋 It was so good. I enjoyed the fried mushrooms and green beans as well. My boyfriend loved his food as well. Friendly staff and good service. I have no complaints!!!
Been going here for a while. Restaurant has take out and seating some of the seating is in an enclosed patio. Mainly fried fish done well. Jalapeño tartar sauce is good! A nod to New Orleans with beignets.
We had just landed in Louisville and were looking for a place to eat before we picked up others from the airport. The fish was excellent. Some in the group also had the beignets which were also good. The people working there were very nice and for a Sunday at lunch time the place was nearly full so it must be a local favorite for after church. We sure enjoyed it and we were able to park on the street for free.
The owner enjoys and taste his food as he describes the menu to you with no rush each of his items. The weekend brunch is: pick from the menu and then keep asking for more of the menu (not buffet style). Seasonal food as well but everything delicious!!
