Food:
I don't live in Memphis, but whenever I come to visit, J. Alexander's is one of my stops. The spinach (appetizer), J. Alexander house salad (with blue cheese dressing), Maui steak, loaded bake potatoe, and the keylime pie for dessert are my go-to. Also, my son loved his cheeseburger.
People:
The greeters and waiters/waitresses make this establishment top tier.
Overall Experience:
The experience is consistent. The atmosphere is spot on with each visit.
Other:
Note: The parking lot outside needs paving. Restrooms are clean. The restaurant is clean.
It's been over a decade since I visited J. Alexander's (before Redland's was in the name). I'm glad I went back.
Although the restaurant had a wait, we were seated before the quoted time. Our server was attentive and the food arrived quicker than anticipated.
I had the salad, which was loaded. I asked for grilled chicken instead of fried and they were happy to accommodate. The thin slices of chicken were warm, flavourful, tender and moist. I don't know if they make the honey mustard dressing, but it was some of the best I've had.
My sweetie had the New York strip, cooked medium with a loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked to perfection! He has announced at least 5 times that we will be returning to J Alexander's so he can get the best steak ever.
UPDATE: We had dinner at Redlands Grill again and it was phenomenal. This time I had the Rainbow Trout, which was a daily special, hubby had the NY strip again. Every single bite was excellent. I couldn't get over how good the fish was and was shocked that I ate it all. It wad so delicious, I couldn't stop. Once again, our meal was a 10 out of 10!
The service was impeccable. The level of service that you don't see much anymore.
The Prime rib was wonderful.
A variety of sides available, that can be substituted because, the ones with the selections don't seem to pair as well.
The atmosphere ambience is beautiful.
Chocolate lava cake not as good. Low amount of flour.
High end on price, but depending on what you order, it is worth it.
Took my sister here for her birthday. This was my 1st time here. Food was good except I wasn't feeling the Mac and Cheese. It was too sweet for me other than that I enjoyed my meal. The shrimp was seasoned really well. My sister had the Grilled Cajun Trout and it looked so good I had to taste it. I'll be getting that my next visit.
Went to Redlands/J. Alexander’s for my birthday dinner last night. I hadn’t been in a while. The food was really good, we had the Mr. Jack’s Chicken Tenders and also a NY strip steak. The sides were also really good. Lucy was our waitress, she was excellent. Polite, friendly, always refreshing our drinks. Really enjoyed the entire experience!
What an amazing experience we had last night! The service was outstanding, the food was fresh and very tasteful. Alison did a magnificent job as our server as well.
I had the salmon with a Thai barbecue sauce and pasta salad, and my wife had fabulous chicken tenders with a baked potato. The chocolate cake was exceptional as well!
Husband was in the mood for prime rib and so we made the trek (almost 45 minutes) to Wolfchase and it was worth the drive. Warning - this is big food. Had we realized that, we would have ordered less dishes. First up, the appetizer grilled artichokes, lovely but messy! But so good. We decided each on a salad with home made dressings and oh, boy, it was so big. It's almost a meal in itself. Nicely constructed with fresh ingredients and crunchy croutons. For our main course, we each had the prime rib, medium rare, with smashed potatoes, The au jou was perfect! Very crowded and popular even at 2:15 in the afternoon. Service was exceptional and I witnessed them dealing with some, shall we say, difficult customers. I had to laugh when I saw a couple order a baked potato as their appetizer and sent it back and complained to the manager. They received a newly baked potato and then their entree included a baked potato. I guess they really like potatoes. I was impressed with the entire experience.
Nice atmosphere with quality dishes. Tried the grilled swordfish for the first time. It was fresh and cooked just right with a delicious green sauce. My wife had the crispy chicken salad which had fresh ingredients and a good mix of flavors. Definitely will return.
This is a 5 star restaurant. Be prepared to pay at $65 a person, and it's worth every bit of it! It has a Dark atmosphere which sets the mood for couples, it brings out the conversations you usually don't have.. I suggest starting off with a glass of wine.. We found the white wine gets you tipsy pretty quick and it lingers, so I suggest a white wine to start off and the food was prepared extremely well and our waiter did a excellent job! The food was off the chain we really enjoyed the experience! We came here for my birthday and it was well worth it!
The service here was superb! Our server was knowledgeable on the menu and did awesome providing suggestions. I had the lemon drop, it was very refreshing and strong. I had the house salad with honey mustard and it was fire! For my entree, I had the ribeye Maui and loaded smashed potatoes, very fulfilling. I literally have no complaints. Definitely a treat.

To start off the service there is out of this world. The wait staff work so well as a team. Better than I have ever seen. Secondly, the food was amazing. Cooked perfectly as asked. The Avacado Bomb was delicious, I highly recommend it and I don't even like avocados! And don't forget to try the deserts. The carrot cake was so fresh almost like it was made at home!We will definitely be returning.
Very dark interior but it feels upscale and cozy. Grilled chicken salad was excellent with a lot of extra ingredients not listed on the menu description of the dish. Salmon w a sweet bbq sauce and a chilled orzo rice mix was one of the specials. The fish was cooked to perfection. Server was also very good and friendly. Prices are high.
I had a good experience. Took a while to get seated but once we got seated everything went well. I like the atmosphere. Our waitress Chelsea was so nice. I got ribs and my boyfriend got tenders. The chocolate cake was very good. I recommend.
Steak was so good y’all. My baked potato was so fat and juicy 😍. My steak was cooked right all the way right. Had plenty flavor. My Long Island tea was on point. Always good professionalism. Love the staff. Place stay clean.
So this had definitely become our go to neighborhood restaurant. Here we are for lunch with a friend, we had reservations for 1130 and were seated right away. Our server,Brandon, polite and pleasant. We had the avocado bomb for appetizer. Ordered lasagna which was delicious! The serving was plentiful. I had the swordfish with shrimp and heirloom tomato. I almost asked for some bread to mop up the remnants on the plate it was sooo good. The fish was cooked perfectly. There was also a classic cheese burger ordered, also cooked to perfection. The bun was lightly buttered and toasted just right. Our guest, who had never been here commented he will be back again. Top everything off with delicious mimosas, this was an excellent lunch.
