Food was great. Very clean and warm atmosphere staff is friendly. Margaret was my waitress who was amazing. Food is seasoned well. I had the faijtas tenampa. My husband had the combo plate reasonably priced and flavorful. One of Milwaukee’s hidden treasures. If you haven’t tried it give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.
We had a great experience at El Tenampa Grill & Cantina! Staff was attentive and courteous, the decor was great, and the food was fabulous - a very extensive menu featuring authentic Mexican food, along with American favorites too. A place for the whole family to enjoy. We will be back! Thanks Victor and Angelina!
I only had the Chilaquiles Verde and they were outstanding!
If everyone gives them a chance to work out the kinks (as every new restaurant needs to) this place should do very well.

We enjoyed a delicious Friday night fish fry and beef & chicken chimichangas! Loved the chips and salsa - the best that I've had anywhere! I can tell the owners have put a lot of work in painting and upgrading it from the old Black Kettle! Fun and authentic decor!
MY FAVORITE!!! Seriously, the best food (must have the salsa verde!) and the service can't be beat! Super reasonably priced also.

Very friendly service and playful at that. They also have slot machines for your entertainment. Food was so amazing and the drinks were superb. I had a Henny mango margarita.
I have been a customer since they opened their doors. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. We are typically takeout customers do to our busy schedules. Their Mexican style tacos, flautas, Grilled chicken salad, Chimichangas and their nachos are delicious and flavorful. My husband and I will occasionally stop in and enjoy their margaritas. If you are looking for a warm welcome, drinks, and delicious food then stop here!

My weekend foodie plans with my dad took us to his favorite Mexican restaurant, El Tenampa. Now I have had some good Mexican food in my time, but this place has solidified it's place as number one in my book! To start they brought out some very nicely warmed tortilla chips and a red salsa The chips were perfectly thin, crispy and warm. The salsa had a wonderful mild flavor. We asked for an additionally spicy version and were brought a Verde salsa that was a perfect blend of pepper and citrus flavors. I ordered the seafood burrito and two side tacos (shredded beef and pork) on corn tortillas with onion and cilantro. While my dad orderd Chile rellenos with steak, beef mole enchilada and a beef tostada. (Pictures of all are attached). My seafood burrito was absolutely loaded with shrimp and crab with a smooth cheesy sauce on top as well as inside. Accompanied with refried beans and rice. I kid you not, this was the best refried beans and rice side I have ever had at a restaurant. The pork and shredded beef tacos paired well with the Verde salsa making a wonderful combination of flavor. Now dad absolutely loved his chili relenos with steak. The plate was loaded with toppings and meat. The beef mole enchilada although a smaller side version was big on flavor. Nice smoky mole with cheese and sour cream. Finally the tostada was crispy and again loaded with toppings. I was starving walking in and left stuffed with box for later to boot. Hidden gem on Milwaukee's north side. There is Mexican food and then there is the food at El Tenampa, the absolute epitomy of wonderful Mexican food a head above the rest!!! Highly recommend!!!
Excellent drink specials...my friends and I especially love the buy one get one $5 margaritas on Thursdays. Convenient location and it saves me a trip from having to go downtown. The food is great and the bartender Arnold is awesome! Neighborhood friendly business....it's worth the try!
This was our first time eating here and it was clean friendly staff food was hot n fresh. Will definitely visit again. The margaritas was good and tasty. Nice for the price.😋
1st time here and was very impressed. Great food, excellent service, clean, awesome older building and a vast amount of menu choices. Prices were a bit higher than many other Mexican restaurants I frequent but I wouldn't let that stop me from going back. Seems prices are going up rapidly wherever I look these days.
Thanks to Groupon for putting this restaurant on my radar. They also display an "A" rating at the entry way, always good to see.

Wonderful atmosphere, friendly and attentive service, beautiful tabletops. Really. The tabletops are works of art.
The menu has a lot of variety. I did my usual "build a combo from the al a carte section." My favorite was to eat at a Mexican restaurant. I can try all their meat choices but not fill up on rice and beans. Chips and salsa is anther story. I ordered the steak chimichanga, ground beef taco, cheese and onion enchilada, pork tamale, and chicken tostada. All of the meats were tender and full of flavor, and they do not skimp on fillings. But no. I of course did not finish it and took the leftovers home for another meal.
I also ordered the cheesecake chimichanga to go and my heart skipped a beat as I open the box to look at it as soon as it was handed to me. Everyone was impressed, and a few were jealous. I ate the whipped cream with drizzled chocolate right away because it was light and airy to fit in my tummy, AND it would have deflated by the time I got home anyway. It is very tasty, and as I imagine would be even better eating it right when it is served.
Everyone enjoyed their lunch, except one. He ordered the vegetarian chile rellenos as he always does at Mexican restaurants. There wasn't anything WRONG with his dish, it was just made differently than he was accustomed to so it felt off to him. He said ingredients were a little different, as was the preparation. But again - nothing wrong. Just different.

Our 1st time visiting - loved it! Will definitely go back. Our server Anahi was very welcoming, friendly and polite. She also gave us a helpful suggestion as we arrived at happy hour, I ordered a small margarita - to which she quickly informed me I could get the medium margarita at the price of a small during happy hour. I was sold! Of course, I took the medium. My partner ordered a long island ice tea. We were both very happy with our cocktails as they were well crafted and had correct amounts of alcohol. We ordered an appetizer of the guacamole. I was pleasantly surprised that there was ample tomatoes, onions and cilantro mixed in and it tasted great - it was freshly made. My partner ordered the #3 combination - taco, tostada and enchilada with refried beans and rice. He was very happy with it, saying he loved the enchilada and the beans and rice tasted homemade; not like they were out of can or box. I ordered the Pork in salsa Verde. It came with a choice of cactus or mushrooms- I opted for the cactus. I had a choice of corn or flour tortillas and a choice of refried or black beans. I opted for the corn tortilla and the black beans. The pork in salsa Verde was absolutely amazing!!! The flavor of the salsa Verde was perfect with the right amount of spice. It was a large serving of pork and cactus with ample sauce; they certainly did not skimp on the meat - it was plenty to fill 4 corn tortillas and still have some left over. I was equally impressed by the black beans. I regularly make black beans from scratch at home and these were very good and tasted close to mine. The place is very quaint, the painted tables were amazing. One room had a vintage looking fire place (it was not lit) and the walls had mural like paintings. It also had a bar area with some video machine off in a nook area. It was exactly what a bar/cantina restaurant should look like.
I had the large Horchata. Came in a huge beer mug....loved it. I went with Birria taco. Which is now my benchmark for quality mexican. Who has outstanding Birria tacos? El Tenampa does. I promise you that. The soup to dip your tacos in isn't so salty. The tacos are well portioned. The atmosphere is typical mexican and the dinning room was clean. I'd go back if I was in the area.
Neat place for drinks and really nice food. Prompt, friendly service and very interesting decor. Hope to visit again soon.
I ordered online and picked up. I think next time I’ll just call the order in. I wanted the steak chimichanga meal and it made me pick another meat even though I selected steak for an extra charge, so they put both ground beef and steak in it. The chimichangas were not full like I’m used to seeing at other Mexican restaurants, but they were still flavorful. When ordering online it said to choose one side which I was fine with because I don’t eat beans so I chose rice. When I picked up however both rice and beans were in it. I also ordered a side of guacamole but did not receive it, I should have checked the bag before leaving.
We always enjoy the food during our many visits. Tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and more have all been good. The verde and habanero sauces make a nice complement to the standard red sauce. $9 for the medium margarita is a fair price. Good option on the northwest side.
I drove by this past weekend and saw this place was packed so we decided to stop by for dinner tonight so glad we did food was fabulous fresh ingredients in every bite. The atmosphere was festive. Wait staff and service was cordial and prompt even answered all questions regarding our food options. They sang happy birthday to a table near us. I'll be back next visit to Milwaukee.
This was our first time at El Tenampa. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant doesn't look like a fancy place from the outside. The inside is pleasantly decorated and welcoming. The service was attentive. The food was delicious.
Great place to have a good meal & marg! I have not tried the patio yet, but the staff is always welcoming when we go. Food is hot and served up quickly. Plenty of marg and other drink choices. El Tenampa is a restaurant we go to regularly.
Excellent experience, calm, relaxing, and inviting atmosphere. Clean restaurant and friendly service. The food was delicious and good size portions. Extremely tasty horchata that may be purchased by the glass or pitcher (for you horchata lover's out there)! I will definitely be returning in the near future 😁👍🌶️
