This place is really great! The food is amazing and they have the best French toast I’ve ever had. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is nice. You will have to wait outside because there are only 14 stools but honestly it has been worth the wait every time I’ve gone! The menu is À la carte style so you can mix and match items. Serving sizes are good and the price is great! This place is cash or check only though so remember that if you choose to come. And I suggest that you come as early in the day as you can to minimize your wait time. Overall 10/10 and I would recommend this place to anyone in the area!

Al's is an institution! I have been going since 1991 when I fist moved to MN. The food is incredibly well done: from the classic Jose (2 poached eggs on top of made from scratch hasbrowns, salsa, topped with melted cheese), to the oven finished Smokey omelet with smoked gouda cheese, bacon and fresh tomatoes! My favorite is the Wally Blues pancakes: fluffy, flavorful buttermilk pancakes with blueberries and walnuts! Plus great coffee and service with a slight attitude, which I like since I grew up on the East coast. Only 13 stools, so be prepared to wait outside, but don't let that deter you since the food and atmosphere is more than worth the wait!!

So great to come back after 20+ years, and very lucky there were 2 open seats when we arrived. Food is damn good and the corned beef hash is out of this world.

Coolest, best tasting breakfast spot in MN! Staff is the best at not just serving but making sure you're happy.

14 seats, cash only and there’s a line outside - still definitely worth the wait! Food was amazing, anything you want they will try to do it for you. Erick made sure we are well taken care of and made a breakfast even more enjoyable! Definitely number one spot for breakfast!

The line is worth the wait, but get there around 8:30-9:30 if you want to be sure to get in. I really enjoyed the summer special, the chocolate chip pancakes, and the omelette. I will be coming back again (I’m going to try for earlier so the wait isn’t as long).

Visited after almost 20 years. The place is still serving the same tasty breakfast! One of the must visit places of U of M.

☕ Al’s Breakfast: Flavor Oasis in Dinkytown ☕ In the heart of Dinkytown, Minneapolis, lies Al’s Breakfast -a flavor oasis that’s been crafting breakfast magic since 1950. Founded by Al Bergstrom this charming spot holds true to its roots while wowing patrons with made-from-scratch breakfast delights. With a mere 14-seat counter, Al’s Breakfast redefines intimate dining. The pancakes, clouds of perfection, whisk you away with each bite. Hint: Order the real maple syrup. And then there’s The Jose: an enchanting medley of hash browns, poached eggs, cheddar cheese, and salsa. A symphony of flavors that dance on your palate. An endearing quirk: cards aren’t welcome, but your cash or cheque is. It’s a nostalgic nod to authenticity that adds to the allure of the place. For a breakfast experience that’s steeped in history, flavor, and charm, Al’s Breakfast is your haven. Rating: Food 4.8/5, Service 4.6/5, Ambience 4.5/5 #AlsBreakfast #BreakfastMagic #DinkytownFlavors

I have always passed the place and went there for my first time today and did not realize it was cash only (I ordered a coffee) and they said it was fine and wished me a happy holiday and it was kind and the atmosphere was amazing! The place is gorgeous and the people are amazing and kind. I will definitely be returning! Thank you!!

Sure it sucks that they’re cash only in a digital world. But for some reason, I am cool with it. Maybe it’s because the food is so wonderful and the staff is so fun and the atmosphere is quirky and the experience itself is unique. The place used to be an alley, so it fits people in snugly. There is a hoarder/maximalist style to the back wall, which adds to the ambiance. Probably my favorite feature is the prepaid tab—of course I want to come back.
