You come for the interesting sights. Hotdogs can be made at home for cheaper price and saving gas unless you are looking for specific toppings. The couple of things that bolster them are their fries and milkshakes not to mention the speciality sausages. It’s more of a place for families and those that want to go to a unique place. If you are really looking for a hot dog then it would be good for you.
Jacks is a must do!. A funky hot dog joint open since 2000 in Mount Pleasant that is cheap but amazing eats. Staff is super friendly and fast! Menu is known for the hot dogs but other options include tofu dogs, chicken, and veggie or black bean burgers. The Mercury meatloaf is a family recipe and very popular with regulars. They also have breakfast sandwich options- try the Rover pork roll, egg and cheese...Wow! The Cosmic dog with sweet potato mustard and blue cheese slaw is a definite favorite! ( Also Alton Brown's favorite eat) Save room for the in house cut salty shoestring fries and a cup or cone of frozen soft serve vanilla and chocolate custard. Milk Shakes and malts oh my!
In a sea of good dogs.. I have finally settled the debate in my own mind about which is the best hot dog peddler in Mount Pleasant; Jacks it is. Jack's has always had tough competition in the Mt. P hot dog market with Johnny's, and Skoogies, and now Seppy's. I however am not able to narrow it down based solely on the hot dog. It's a combination of factors, the dogs, yes, they are outstanding, but the others in mt. P are too...But jacks also does great draft root beer, and.... amazing French fries. Put that together with the unique decor and vintage video games, and we have a winner.
Fun!. Fun 50s diner atmosphere! Good dogs and fries and very affordable.
Enjoyed Quirky Atmosphere and Food. Five of us squeezed up to a bar and had some great hot dogs and kielbasa. The fries were very good, although I personally don't love when they are cut in such small sizes. There were enough fries in a regular basket for two people to share. I ordered a Milky Way sundae that was good but nothing special. The dogs are the stars here.
The Galactic Dog was excellent. We arrived on a Sunday after a heavy rain. The ceiling had caved in, they were out of milk (no milk shakes), and no bratwursts. Even so, the dogs were pretty good.
The best!!. My family and I have been going to the Mt. Pleasant Jack's forever and it just keeps getting better! So reasonably priced and the food is consistently good. Best fries ever!
Now that's a dog!. A simple and really fun place. The kids loved it. I have read posts that say overpriced. I say you get what you pay for and the hot dogs are awesome. Great variation on the menu.
Tasty and affordable. Like alot of people, I woud have probably never stopped by Jack's Cosmic Dogs if it wasnt for the food network buzz about it. I am from Rochester, NY, where hot dogs are either char grilled or cooked on a flat top. the dogs @ jacks are either steamed or boiled (not sure how exactly, i'm not one to hover over the counter and watch them cook ) but the dog was tender and moist. I had the cosmic dog (excellent) and my wife had the astro dog ( also excellent ). We split a basket of fries, which were thin cut, crispy, hot, and well seasoned. We will be visiting again!
Love it! Great hotdogs and atmosphere.
Yum. Lived up to the hype.
Love these dogs. First tried at Citadel football games, from their trailer. Looks questionable from highway 17 with a dirt parking lot; however, worth it. My 2 favorites are the cosmic dog and the krypto kraut!
Crazy Good. I was told that Jack's was featured on a show with Alton Brown (Good Eats) as the "Best this he ever ate". I can easily see why. Everything about Jack's Cosmic Dogs is amazing. For starters, their menu elevates the hot dog to the highest level of culinary excellence. The bun and weenie are of superior quality and the accompaniments are all delicious. I have now been to Jack's several times and enjoy the sweet potato mustard, the chili sauce, and the blue cheese slaw. I also appreciate the tap root beer and the quirky decor. This is one of those regional treasures that you really cannot experience anywhere else in the world. I hope Jack's stays around for a long time. I will certainly visit again the next time I am in town. YUM
It's ok...not Cosmic. We ate at Jack's last night. The dogs were original and ok, but a little on the pricey side. The fries were good with chili, cheese, spicy ranch and jalapenos. The atmosphere was tacky, but in a good way. They stayed true to the stated theme of being cosmic.
The service was sorta and the folks working didn't seem very motivated to hurry orders along or help with first time customers. As a destination eat, it's ok, but after the first visit, I'd be hard pressed to make a return visit.
Great Dogs!. Wife, children, and I had lunch here on Tuesday (June 26, 2012). We each had a unique dog. Nothing fancy, but great dogs in a cool atmosphere. A perfect road-side hot dog joint.
Get the cosmic dog!!! Soooo good!
Cheesy dogs. Jack's had a great outer space theme going on, and their dogs are worth the stop. Great dogs and decent prices. Family friendly. Also if you are tired of drinking fountain drinks they offer kool-aid.
Wonderful place for Hot Dogs!. Quite the assortment of Hot Dog topping options - including "sweet potato mustard," slaw, chili, sauerkraut, etc. I had the "Morph-Slaw-Dog" (with reg. mustard substituted) - delish! The bun was so soft and good. Yummy milkshakes, too. Great options at great prices!
Great fries, but I clutched and ordered the wrong dog. May be back this weekend to try again. Nice vanilla shake.
Good dogs. From fine dining to the dogs. Here it is: fun, not bad, a little expensive. Cool setup, good interiors, super friendly staff, lots of choices for toppings. Definitely better dogs out there but hey, it's a dog and it won't kill you.
Blue cheese slaw is worth a long journey.
Cool place. Milkshakes were great and while the overall hotdogs were great, the actual hotdog wasn't as good as a Hebrew National; not sure they were beef. Hubby had the tofu dogs and said they rocked. Reminded me of Spikes in Boston.
Best Hot Dog On The Planet!. The cosmic dog is my favorite! Plus the fires are amazing! If you haven'r tried a Moonpie heated up with ice cream on it is missing the best desert! Ben to all three of them. James Island is my favorite. Great staff.
Overrated. Good, but no where near as good as Perfectly Franks
Cosmic Dog = Unreal. Love the blue cheese slaw and the sweet potato mustard. If you are on your way in or out of Folly...you would be an idiot not to stop in for a dog.
Off the chain. Blue cheese coleslaw...awesome. also, the best veggie/tofu dog i've ever had. the sweet potato mustard also impressed me. definitely going back someday soon.
Great Weekend Stop. We usually stop in on the weekends. This is a nice, clean fun place. The hot dogs are awesome thou a bit overpriced. I overlook that because of the quality. Love the bottled soda!
Unique, Fun. Dogs were okay, meat-wise. Probably not all beef but buns are good and toppings really make the dogs what they are. Very good fries. Love getting the glass bottles of Cheerwine, Nehi, etc. out of the ice in the antique Coke cooler. Was hot in the restaurant when we were there and the inside is pretty small but my kids and I liked it for a fun lunch together.
NY, Chicago, and Pinks in LA will always rank as the best place to get a hotdog. Jacks is good, but not as great as some make it out to be.
Great Dogs. Jack's is a great place to eat. The dogs and fries are delicious. There are many, many combinations of toppings to try. Every time I have eaten there it has been great. The fries are good too but try to split them with a friend because they give you a lot. The corndog is tasty too. It can get very busy so may try on "off" time. Service tends to be fast even when busy. Atmosphere is funky and fun. Retro baby!
Cosmic dog.... Visiting from Oklahoma city and although I don't like to admit it, I've always liked hot dogs. So I ordered a cosmic dog and shared some fries with my hubby. The dog is served on a kaiser roll and the "cosmic dog" was dressed with sweet potato mustard and blue cheese slaw, both of which I'd never had the pleasure of tasting before. All I can say is "yum"! The mustard was very tasty and the slaw was not overpowering.
Anyway, I liked it. So there it is. If your on your way to Folly Beach, stop and get a dog.
The fries rock, AND they have koolaid!!
Gotta Get the Fries. We have been going to Isle of Palms for years and never heard of this place until I saw it on an episode of "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" on the Food Network. Alton Brown claimed Jack's Cosmic Dog was the best hot dog he ever ate, so we thought we would give it a try. The place is an authentic roadside eatery that specializes in hot dogs. While the hot dogs are good, I was blown away by their fries. Thin cut and very crispy cause they fry them up in peanut oil. Great place to take kids for a classic Americana experience.
Yummy!. We found Jack's Cosmic Dogs while on vacation in nearby Isle of Palms. It's a hot dog joint that is totally AMAZING! I would definitely recommend the Cosmic Dog, which comes with blue cheese slaw and sweet potato mustard. The combo is soooooooo good. We even bought a jar of the mustard to bring home. Fries are delicious and you can tell that they are fresh cut. Definitely a go to place. Kid friendly as well!
Fun Stop!. Definitely a good stop, especially for kids. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. All of our food was delicious! The only complaint I have is it's a little on the pricey side but it's just an observation. The food and atmosphere makes this stop well worth it.
Have the Cosmic Dog. The blue cheese slaw and sweet potatoe mustard transform an ordinary hot dog.
Got the Morph Slaw dog drink and fries. Oil was dirty so fries were subpar. The slaw was cool but not wet and it made for a wonderful mouthfeel of hotdog goodness. Def would come back.
Jack is awesome! Hot dogs rock!. So I met the owner Jack while doing a news report on his book giveaway to make sure students in rural schools got a free book to take home.
Interesting hearing about why he decided to make the place into a retro/futuristic hot dog restaurant.
The french fries are good, but cut thin, which i love. The sweet potato mustard and coleslaw hotdog is a must try. I even like the tofu hotdog!
Hot Diggity Dog!!!. Wow!!! Next to the classic Chicago dog, Jack's Cosmic Dogs are not to be missed. These dogs are truly out of this world! It was featured on the Food Network Channel Good Eats, so you know it's a great place. I had the Blue Galactic Dog and the Krypto Krout Dog. Oh so good! The Sweet Potato mustard is awesome! Take some time a look at this stuff on the walls. We learned the Jack was coached by the great Lou Holtz at William & Mary!
A definite stop the next time you are in the area!
I Don't Even Like Hot Dogs. I don't even like hot dogs, but I LOVE this place. The root beer in the frosted mug is great. The only thing I don't like (and its just me) is they put a freaking pickle on every dog! I just don't like pickles. The fries can be shared with another person. There are enough toppings and combination's to find the perfect dog for you! Bill Clinton has eaten here, so has Alton Brown!
Great food!. Love the food. Slow service but friendly!
Mmmmmmmmmmm!. Had a chili dog and a chili dog with regular slaw with an order of fries and was very very pleased. also left with a milky way sundae and couldnt be more happy with everything! can't wait to go back!
Best Hot Dog Anywhere. By far the best you will ever have. The BUN alone is worth coming in for.
Try the Cosmic Dog. The bun, top grade dog and blue cheese slaw. To die for.
I couldn't imagine it any better. I have never had a better hotdog in my life. I was blown away when I went. It seems so simple yet I couldn't imagine it being better. The cosmic dog is by far the best hot dog I've ever had. Sweet potato mustard with blue cheese slaw work perfectly together. Everything from the food, to the ice cream, to the tang and kool aid, this "shack" on the side of the road is perfect. I highly recommend the experience. If you're within 30 miles of Charleston its a must. You won't be disappointed.
Corndogs!. I hadn't had a corndog in awhile so it was time to try one out. It was excellent. It had a good ratio of hot dog to breading. Lots of corndogs tend to come with more breading than meat, this wasn't the case here. yum!
The dogs are fantastic and the sweet potato mustard rocks!
If you like hot dogs it is a must. Not much on atmosphere but great hot dogs.
Great Dogs.... The wife and I tried this place for the first time recently and totally loved it. The place is a small shack but they make fantastic food.
The Atomic Dog (Onions, Mustard, Chili) is great, we also had the Galactic (above plus cheese and cole slaw) but I preferred the Atomic.
The fries are fantastic - get cheese on them, you won't regret it.
That's a good dog!. The dogs are good, the place is funky, and the sweet potato mustard is mighty tasty. May be a bit crowded sometimes, but hit it on an off hour or out of tourist season. You won't be disappointed and you will probably end up eating too much.
Off the Chart Hot Dog's. This place is amazing. They have the best, most unique hot dog I have ever had. I had a dog with sweet potato mustard and blue cheese cole slaw that was off the chart. A must stop if visiting Charleston
Try it Now!. It is a favorite stop for our family on the way to and from Pawleys Island......draft root beer is the best! You may drive by it 3 times before you see it but keep on looking as it will become a favorite!
Jack’s Cosmic Dogs was featured on the Food Network show “ The Best Thing I Ever Ate .” Alton Brown raved about their hot dogs. Specifically the Cosmic Dog with blue cheese slaw and sweet potato mustard. I looked up this place online before we arrived into Charleston and discovered they offered tofu dogs and a carrot dog . I have read about making a Vegan Carrot dog but have never seen it on a menu. Until now. We had to go here. Outside of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Jack’s Hot Dogs sits off Hwy 17 on the way into (or out of) town. There isn’t too much around it and can be easy to pass by. It looks like a run down dive bar with a gravel parking lot. Very Southern. There is a variety of toppings for their dogs. Well, if it is good enough for Alton Brown it is good enough for me- only substituted with a Tofu dog. When I first saw my hot dog I had to check just to make sure they didn’t give me regular meat. It looked like the real
Dogs Done Well If you haven't been to Jack's Cosmic Dogs, you are in for a real treat. Located a few miles north of the Isle of Palm Connector and just before Hwy 41, lies this hot dog paradise. It's a cross between an old diner and a spaceship, very kitschy, very colorful and very busy. We landed there after doing some holiday errands around 2:00 p.m. I was surprised to see the parking lot almost full at this time of day. Since we had passed the peak lunch hour I figured it wouldn't be that busy. Boy, was
Took a family trip to South Carolina and my wife, the hot dog connoisseur, had researched this treasure so we had to stop! We tried the Cosmic Dog and the Blue Galactic, which was my favorite! My world was changed for the better with the discovery of Blue Cheese Coleslaw and then to have it placed on a delicious hot dog… it was so good! Staff was very friendly and service was far too.
Knew I would have some time for a hot dog stop on a trip to Charleston and decided to stop in at Jack's Cosmic Dogs. Got a classic Cosmic Dog with fries (smaller meal as I knew I'd be eating a bunch later). This came with some blue cheese slaw which was really unique tasting. Not a big fan of blue cheese myself, but this was still delicious.
All of the staff were very helpful. I was tired and they were helping me with very basic questions.
Decor was interesting and fun. Definitely recommend you make a stop in here for a hot dog if you get the chance
The most amazing hot dog experience I ever had! This nostalgic gem is hidden in a small town in SC. You wont be disappointed at all, and its a must for some traditional family memories over the years.
My wife and I make an extra special trip to Jack’s every time we’re in the Charleston area. The all-beef dogs they use are very filling, and the blue cheese slaw is a real hit even though I’m normally not a blue cheese fan. They have just about every hot dog you could think of, and for taste, price, and value, it’s a real win. Come for the hot dogs, stay for the atmosphere and the authentic Jack’s experience.
So delishous! Will be coming back. Belly buster meals. Got the galactic dog and fully loaded fries (they had a different name for them but forgot).
Great little hot dog place. They are very helpful and friendly, also great at advising on sauces, etc. two sides of the restaurant have covered outdoor seating for dining with fur kids. Nice little spot to grab a bite and a beverage. They also have rootbeer on tap as well as real beer.
This is a really cool place. I expected the hot dogs to be on a whole different level than your backyard BBQ hot dogs but they really weren't. I love all the wild combos they have on the menu, and you can build your own with many different ingredients. I would definitely go back!
First time there enjoyed it the dogs were excellent the fries were excellent service was good have no complaints
Woaooooo!!!! These hot dogs are Amazing!!! I haven't eaten such a good hot dog in a while and it's not only the weiners, it's the different combinations they have that are so delicious!!! Family friendly, all the decorations are awesome, it gets busy but if you go around 3pm on a weekend it's pretty fast service. All the staff are friendly and super quick with your order, of course I was there twice and if they are busy you need a bit of patience, but it's worth it!!! I Highly recommend it!!!
This was a great stop on the way out of Charleston. It's exactly what you expect. A roadside dive with a great hot dog, fast service and a really fun atmosphere. Don't pass on the blue cheese slaw, it's what takes the hot dog to the next level.
I drove past this place so many times and FINALLY we stopped. Totally worth. The hotdogs were delicious. The corn dog was sweet, savory, crunchy and soft! They have TANG, like real TANG! Such a fun atmosphere.
Very interesting and cool place! The staff was super nice and the food was good. Fries are crispy and the hotdogs are cooked to perfection. The blue cheese coleslaw is heavenly.
Great local find. Fun atmosphere. Yummy hot dogs.
Took our 5 yr. old granddaughter here just like we took her mom when she was little
Best hot dogs, shakes and fresh cute fries EVER!! We ate there 2 days in a row it was so good!!
The food was amazing and cheap. The atmosphere was great and the people were super friendly. Would definitely recommend!
I love this place!!!!! This is a must stop on any road trip to Charleston. all the hot dogs that they have are excellent! I chose the blue galactic dog. It comes with cheese, chilli, blue cheese slaw and there are famous sweet potato mustard. I can eat two every time I go, but try to stick to just one along with the overflowing basket of fries that you can order. You also add toppings to your fries if you want. They do have ice cream for dessert so save some room! it is kind of easy to miss because of everything is building up around it so quickly. So be on the lookout for it when you're traveling through Mount Pleasant SC on Highway 17.
Today was my first time ever eating at Cosmic Dog. I've passed this placed for 15years...last night I commented I've never eaten there before so..I committed myself to go today after work an took the suggestion from Facebook to try the classic blue cheese slaw dog... very skeptical.... I went after work and the atmosphere was very inviting, the manager and staff was AWESOME and I was sold on the blue cheese slaw(sample) so I had the Blue Gigantic w fries... it was very good.. GREAT 1ST TIME EXPERIENCE. I will be back.. What a great way to kick off my BIRTHDAY WEEK!!!
